Apollo Cancer Centres launched India's first blood-based multi-cancer detection test, the Shield MCD test, after a tie-up with Zydus Lifesciences; it was developed by Guardant Health.
The methylation-based test detects signals of multiple cancers, including breast, colorectal, lung, liver and pancreatic, for individuals aged 45 and above, and has received a Breakthrough Device Designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for eight cancer types.

Push to make cancer a notifiable disease

Telangana became the 17th state to make cancer a notifiable disease, even though cancer is not notifiable at the national level, where only communicable diseases are notified.
The Global Cancer Observatory projects India's cancer cases rising from 1.41 million in 2022 to 2.46 million by 2045, an increase of over 74%, while cancer registries cover only 10 to 16% of the population.

Centre to summon Meta over child abuse ads

IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw directed the ministry to summon Meta over the proliferation of child sexual abuse material advertisements on Instagram, under the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000.

Rainfall across the country has been nearly 43% below normal this monsoon, while the northeast monsoon, which brings the bulk of Tamil Nadu's rain, is forecast to be above normal.

Assam sells India's first commercial matcha tea

An Assam tea estate sold India's first commercially produced matcha tea at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre, with five kilograms of the first batch fetching Rs.3,000 a kg.
The matcha came from the Chota Tingrai Tea Estate in Tinsukia district, which spent a decade collaborating with Japanese tea experts; matcha is made by shading tea leaves for three to four weeks before harvest.

Heavy rain forecast for Tamil Nadu

The Chennai weather centre forecast heavy rain at isolated places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, with thunderstorms and lightning likely in several districts between July 5 and 7.

DAC clears defence buys worth nearly Rs.52,000 crore

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh accorded Acceptance of Necessity for proposals worth nearly Rs.52,000 crore for the Army, Navy and Air Force.
For the Army it cleared the Akash Tarang anti-drone electronic warfare system, the Man Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM), Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) and Very Short Range Air Defence Systems (V-SHORADS); for the Navy, Multi Influence Ground Mines and shipborne drones; and for the Air Force, Fixed-Wing High Altitude Pseudo Satellites (FW-HAPS).

Indus Waters Treaty to stay in abeyance

India said the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 will remain in abeyance until Pakistan credibly and irrevocably abjures its support for cross-border terrorism, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
The Cabinet Committee on Security had put the treaty in abeyance a day after the Pahalgam terror attack of April 22, 2025, in which 26 civilians were killed; India's military response was Operation Sindoor.

Eight held in Gujarat and M.P. over Jaish links

The Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad arrested eight persons, including two teenagers, over alleged links to the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) in simultaneous operations in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
The accused were booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita; over 250 pieces of jihadi literature were recovered, and officials said the group had translated works of JeM founder Masood Azhar into Gujarati.

Ladakh to get a customised self-governance model

A High-Powered Committee of the Union Home Ministry agreed to set up an elected body for Ladakh under a customised, sui generis model, with constitutional safeguards discussed under Article 371, per minutes released with the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance.
The Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance reiterated their demands for full Statehood and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

Opposition parties write to CJI over poll concerns

Leaders of 23 Opposition parties wrote to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant alleging that the integrity of elections was in danger, flagging the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal and Bihar.
The June 28 letter, also signed by Independent MP Kapil Sibal, cited the Supreme Court's Anoop Baranwal judgment on the Election Commission and noted that 2.4 lakh central force personnel were deployed for the West Bengal exercise.

Supreme Court flags AI-fabricated case citations

The Supreme Court set aside insolvency orders that had relied on fictitious, AI-generated legal citations, warning that fabricated machine-generated judgments amount to professional misconduct for advocates and a lapse of duty for judges.
The draft Regulations for Use of Artificial Intelligence in Courts, 2026 bar the use of AI in adjudication, sentencing and bail decisions, and the Bar Council of India was asked to frame norms.

India and Japan unveil landmark initiatives

India and Japan unveiled a set of landmark initiatives during Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's visit, including an economic partnership framework and cooperation on critical minerals to make supply chains more resilient.
A day later, China said cooperation between countries should not target any third party; the India-Japan joint statement expressed serious concern over the situation in the East China Sea and the South China Sea.

PM Modi to visit Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake a three-nation visit to Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand from July 6 to 11, his first bilateral visit to New Zealand.
Indo-Pacific cooperation and trade are on the agenda; India-Indonesia trade stands at about 1,237.3 crore dollars (US$ 12.373 billion).

Iran holds funeral for slain leader Khamenei

Iran began official mourning for Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei ahead of a mass funeral in Tehran; he was killed in United States-Israeli strikes on February 28.
India is represented by Minister of State Pabitra Margherita and Bihar Governor Syed Ata Hasnain; a 14-point interim agreement signed by U.S. President Donald Trump at Versailles on June 17 had reopened the Strait of Hormuz and pledged at least 30,000 crore dollars (US$ 300 billion) for Iran's reconstruction.

U.S. recommends extra 12.5% tariff on Indian goods

The United States has recommended an additional 12.5% tariff on Indian goods, and India's Ministry of Commerce is set to argue its case on July 8.
India plans to contest the levy, which is linked to countervailing duties, at the World Trade Organization.

Sri Lanka arrests former Navy chief Karannagoda

Sri Lanka's bribery commission arrested former Navy Commander Wasantha Karannagoda over the alleged illegal recruitment and United Kingdom training of Yoshitha Rajapaksa, son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Karannagoda, who commanded the Navy when the LTTE was defeated in May 2009, is also linked to the Navy 11 enforced-disappearance case and was sanctioned by the U.K. in March 2025.

Centre allows four China-linked firms to bid for power projects

The Finance Ministry granted a two-year exemption allowing four companies with Chinese ownership or links to bid for critical public power projects: TBEA Energy India, Nanjing Electric India, New Northeast Electric India and Taikai Electric (India).
The order, dated June 24, said the exemption should not be treated as a precedent; the Congress alleged a calibrated capitulation to China even as India's trade deficit with that country hit record levels.

Specialised Investment Funds cross Rs.13,814 crore

Specialised Investment Funds (SIFs), a new category introduced by the markets regulator in February 2026, crossed Rs.13,814 crore in assets under management across more than 56,000 investor folios as on May 31.
SIFs sit between mutual funds and portfolio management services, require a minimum investment of Rs.10 lakh, and can run up to 21 investment strategies.

Services activity eases to a 17-month low

The HSBC India Services PMI Business Activity Index eased to 57.4 in June from 59.8 in May, the slowest upturn since January 2025, on weaker growth in new orders.

Goyal reiterates $1 trillion export target

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal reiterated the target of $1 trillion in exports this year at the Board of Trade meeting, urging firms to move beyond their domestic comfort zone.
He said the Export Promotion Mission would help firms set up overseas branding, warehousing and exhibitions.

Centre blocks e-rickshaw battery management apps

The Union government ordered the blocking of e-rickshaw battery management apps, mostly developed by Chinese firms, after users were able to remotely disable lithium-ion batteries, including in an extortion incident in Ujjain.

Vigilance raids 41 local body offices; Rs.57.98 lakh seized

The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption raided 41 local body offices across Tamil Nadu and seized Rs.57.98 lakh in unaccounted cash along with documents.
Among the offices, the Karur town panchayat topped with Rs.8.06 lakh, followed by Thiruthuraipoondi (Rs.7.49 lakh) and the Ariyalur municipality (Rs.5.79 lakh); the checks targeted offices with high daily cash collections such as building tax and water charges.

DMK MLA Anitha Radhakrishnan arrested over remarks on CM

Tiruchendur DMK MLA and former Fisheries Minister Anitha R. Radhakrishnan was arrested at Authoor in Thoothukudi over remarks against Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay at a June 20 meeting, shortly after the Madras High Court dismissed his anticipatory bail petition.
He was later granted bail on a personal bond with a Rs.10,000 surety and directed to appear before the investigating officer for ten days; DMK president M.K. Stalin condemned the arrest.

DMK moves Supreme Court over Karur stampede statements

The DMK moved the Supreme Court seeking to bar TVK leaders from making threatening statements about the Karur stampede, which is under a CBI probe.
The stampede at a TVK rally on September 27, 2025 killed 41 people and injured 142; the DMK sought to stop CM C. Joseph Vijay's proposed July 10 visit to Karur during the probe.

Doorstep ration scheme extended to those above 60

The Tamil Nadu government will lower the eligibility age under the Chief Minister's doorstep ration delivery scheme from 70 to 60, benefiting about four lakh more elderly people, widows and persons with disabilities.
About 20 lakh people already benefit through more than 34,000 ration outlets, and 50,000 new ration cards are to be distributed.

Ministers say officials need not attend Governor's review meetings

Law Minister R. Nirmalkumar said government officials need not attend review meetings convened by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, who had planned one at the Madurai Circuit House.
He said officials are bound to attend only meetings called by elected representatives or as provided by law.

Ammonia leak toll rises to 18 in Tiruvallur

The toll from the June 21 ammonia leak at a seafood processing unit in Tiruvallur district rose to 18 with the death of a migrant worker from Kendujhar, Odisha; 14 women remain under treatment.
A 500-metre restricted zone was declared at Kannigaipair village, and controlled ammonia removal was scheduled for July 4 and 5.
