Centre issues notice to Meta over child-abuse ads on Instagram

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology directed Meta, the parent of Instagram, to disable advertisements promoting and facilitating access to Child Sexual Exploitative and Abuse Material (CSEAM), and to explain its action within seven days.
The move followed a BBC Eye investigation which found Instagram had allegedly been running paid adverts promoting child sexual abuse material in India, linking users to channels on Telegram.
The notice was issued under the IT Rules, 2021, on the direction of IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw; further action will be decided after reviewing Meta's reply.

Opposition set to stall the 130th Amendment 'dismissal' Bill

Parliament's Monsoon Session is scheduled from July 20 to August 13, 2026. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the united Opposition is prepared to stall the Delimitation Bill and the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025.
The 130th Amendment Bill provides for the automatic dismissal of the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers and Ministers if they are arrested and detained for 30 consecutive days; the Bill has been referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee.
The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026 seeks to redistribute Lok Sabha seats on the basis of the 2011 Census to expedite the implementation of women's reservation.

SIR: over 20 lakh names left out of Odisha draft rolls

In the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, over 20 lakh names were left out of Odisha's draft roll published on July 5; the electorate fell from about 3.34 crore to 3.14 crore.
The deletions include 8.32 lakh deceased, 10.07 lakh absent or shifted, and 1.58 lakh enrolled at multiple places; the final roll is due on September 6. In Sikkim, 37,724 names were left out of the draft.

US drops charges against Adani citing 'diplomatic strife'

The U.S. Department of Justice moved to drop all charges against industrialist Gautam Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani and their associates over securities fraud allegations, saying that 'not a penny has been lost'.
The November 2024 indictments were brought under the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which deals with the alleged bribery of foreign officials, and by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

NIA takes over Manipur abduction and killing case

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) took over the case of the abduction and killing of six Naga men in Kangpokpi district; a policeman is being interrogated in connection with it.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the security situation in Manipur, where National Highway 2 had been severely affected.

Trump launches fresh push to end the Russia-Ukraine war

U.S. President Donald Trump held separate telephone talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a fresh bid to end the four-year war.
The initiative came around the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence; Trump said he was ready to help find political and diplomatic solutions to end the fighting.

India pitches for balanced trade with China

India's Ambassador to China Vikram Doraiswami, speaking at the World Peace Forum in Beijing, pushed for more Indian exports, especially pharmaceuticals, and for greater Chinese investment into India.
China was India's largest trading partner in 2025-26, with bilateral trade at $151.1 billion and a trade deficit of $112.16 billion in India's disfavour.

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan released the first instalment of ₹25,863 crore under the Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin), or VB-G RAM G, effective July 1, 2026, replacing the MGNREGA.

The government withdrew most provisions of the emergency Natural Gas (Supply Regulation) Order, 2026 after LNG shipments resumed through the Strait of Hormuz.
India imports about 88% of its crude oil and around half of its natural gas; the Centre said 15 Indian ships carrying about 3.32 lakh tonnes of fertiliser also crossed the strait safely.

Cooperation Ministry marks five years: White Revolution 2.0

The Ministry of Cooperation completed five years; Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah launched the Sardar Patel Cooperative Dairy Federation, linking 20 lakh dairy farmers under White Revolution 2.0.

New rules for EPF pension and NPS withdrawals

New rules for EPF, EPS and EDLI flow from the Code on Social Security, 2020, which subsumes nine laws including the Employees' Provident Fund Act and the ESI Act.
Separately, a PFRDA amendment cut the mandatory annuity under the National Pension System from 40% to 20% of the corpus, allowing a lump sum of up to 80%.

Gold and silver see sharp quarterly fall

On the Comex, gold closed about 12% lower at $4,021.8, its worst quarterly loss in 13 years; silver fell nearly 22% to $59.04.
On the MCX, gold fell to ₹1,42,546 per 10 grams; a hawkish U.S. Federal Reserve and a firmer dollar drove the fall.

GCC to levy Rs 25,000 fine for waste-rule violations

The Greater Chennai Corporation will raise the fine to ₹25,000, from ₹5,000, for violating the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.
A bulk waste generator is defined as a building of 20,000 sq. m. built-up area, or using 40,000 litres of water a day, or generating 100 kg of waste a day; of 3,204 identified, 1,803 have registered.

IIT Madras to launch four-year Cyber Security degree

IIT Madras will start a four-year undergraduate degree in Cyber Security from 2026-27, covering applications in AI, finance, defence and telecom.

Over 230 Irula families earn steady income from cashew

Over 230 Irula tribal families in Ariyalur district earn a stable income through cashew harvesting under the Tholkudi Livelihood Scheme, with plantation land leased from TAFCORN.

Tamil Nadu opposes Karnataka's Mekedatu project
