Ebola outbreak in DR Congo crosses 500 deaths

  • The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has killed more than 500 people, according to the World Health Organization; there have been 1,561 confirmed cases since the outbreak was declared in mid-May.

NIA charges LeT chief Hafiz Saeed in Pahalgam attack case

  • The National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed a supplementary chargesheet before the NIA Special Court in Jammu against Hafiz Saeed, founder of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), and its proxy The Resistance Front (TRF), in the Pahalgam terror attack case.
  • The LeT and the TRF were charged as legal entities for their role in the April 22, 2025 attack, in which 26 civilians were killed; the accused were booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

Census 2027 rehearsal has an 'open column' to record caste

  • The questionnaire used in the second-phase rehearsal of the Census, which began on July 1 in 16 States and Union Territories and concludes on July 20, has an open column for respondents to state their caste; officials called it a 'pre-test'.
  • The 2027 Census is India's first digital Census and the first to enumerate caste in independent India; the main Population Enumeration phase is due in February 2027. The 2011 SECC had returned over 46 lakh caste names, against 4,147 castes in the 1931 Census.

Supreme Court declares Right to Walk on footpaths a fundamental right

  • The Supreme Court declared the Right to Walk safely on footpaths a fundamental right under Article 19(1)(d) (freedom of movement) and Article 21 (right to life), giving pedestrians a claim on public pathways over automobiles.
  • The ruling was delivered by Justices P.S. Narasimha and A.S. Chandurkar.

Stealth frigate Mahendragiri to join the Indian Navy

  • The Indian Navy will commission its sixth Project 17A stealth frigate, Mahendragiri (F38), at Visakhapatnam on July 11; it was built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, Mumbai, with more than 75% indigenous content.

  • Some reports pointed to a faction of the NSCN (Isak-Muivah); the NSCN (IM), which has been in a ceasefire since 1997, denied any involvement.

Ram Temple Trust accepts resignations amid donation-theft probe

  • The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust accepted the resignations of general secretary Champat Rai and trustee Anil Mishra amid allegations of embezzlement of temple donations, and appointed Krishna Mohan as acting general secretary.
  • A Special Investigation Team (SIT) is probing the case; the Trust said it had received ₹3,264 crore in donations since its inception, and formed a three-member panel to select a professional CEO.

Modi begins three-nation tour with Indonesia

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Indonesia on the first leg of a three-nation tour and held talks with President Prabowo Subianto; India and Indonesia elevated ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018.
  • The visit advances India's Act East Policy and MAHASAGAR Vision; Mr. Modi will next travel to Melbourne (Australia) at PM Anthony Albanese's invitation and to Auckland (New Zealand) at PM Christopher Luxon's invitation.

Jaishankar to launch India's UNSC seat campaign on July 13

  • External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will on July 13 launch India's official campaign for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the term 2028-29; he reaches New York on July 10.

Hamas to dissolve its Gaza governing body

  • The Palestinian group Hamas announced it would dissolve the body that has governed the Gaza Strip since 2007, clearing the way for a technocratic committee to run civilian affairs.

Auto retail sales up 22% in June to 25.57 lakh units

  • The share of alternative-fuel passenger vehicles (CNG, hybrid and electric) crossed 40% for the first time at 40.35%, and overall EV penetration reached about 12.5%.

Record FPI bond inflows of Rs 55,518 crore in June

  • Foreign portfolio investment into India's bond market crossed a record ₹55,518 crore in June 2026; inflows under the Fully Accessible Route (FAR) reached ₹21,652 crore, the highest since it was introduced in September 2024.
  • The Centre had waived the Long Term Capital Gains (LTCG) tax on foreign bond investment and expanded the FAR to include 15, 30 and 40-year G-Secs and Sovereign Green Bonds.

NSE targets Rs 30,000-crore IPO in September

  • The National Stock Exchange (NSE) is targeting a September launch of its IPO, estimated at around ₹30,000 crore, which would surpass Hyundai Motor India's ₹27,870-crore IPO of October 2024 and value the exchange at over ₹5 lakh crore.
  • Separately, market regulator SEBI plans to make short selling easier by nearly doubling the number of shares eligible for lending and borrowing.

Cooperation Ministry marks five years

  • Marking five years of the Ministry of Cooperation, Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah said a cooperative life insurance company would be set up and laid the foundation for the Tribhuvan Sahkari University at Anand, Gujarat.
  • He said the cooperative ride-hailing platform Bharat Taxi would be expanded to 500 cities in two years; India has about 8.5 lakh cooperatives with over 30 crore members.

CM opposes amendment to the National Food Security Act

  • Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay wrote to Prime Minister Modi urging the Centre to retain the existing entitlement of 35 kg of foodgrains per month for every household under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY), irrespective of family size.
  • He warned that the proposed shift to a per-capita 7 kg (with a 35 kg household ceiling) would reduce foodgrains for Tamil Nadu's poorest, where the average family size is 3.54; the State has 18,64,600 AAY ration cards covering 69,26,983 beneficiaries.

CM inspects Nemmeli desalination plants

  • Chief Minister Vijay inspected the Nemmeli desalination plants of 110 MLD and 150 MLD capacity, drank the water produced there, and reviewed the 400 MLD desalination plant being built at Perur at a cost of ₹5,814.57 crore.

State defends CRZ nod for Mamallan Reservoir

  • The Tamil Nadu State Coastal Zone Management Authority defended the CRZ clearance granted to the proposed Mamallan Reservoir in Chengalpattu district before the National Green Tribunal, saying the project complies with the CRZ Notification, 2011.
  • The reservoir will have a storage capacity of 1.655 tmc ft, with a Phase-I extent of 1,770.5 hectares, and will serve about 50,000 residents in areas including Nemmeli and Mamallapuram; fisher groups have opposed it.

Metro Rail to build commercial hub at Thirumangalam

  • Chennai Metro Rail will begin work in September on a commercial hub at Thirumangalam comprising four towers on 3.85 acres, at an estimated cost of nearly ₹400 crore, linked to the Phase II station by a skywalk.

App-based pre-booking for outpatients at Rajiv Gandhi hospital

  • Tamil Nadu will trial a mobile-app pre-booking system for outpatients at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai from July 8, to streamline services; the hospital sees about 5,000 outpatients a day.

Statewide anti-drug drive: 621 held in three days

  • In a statewide anti-drug drive ordered by DGP Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal, Tamil Nadu police arrested 621 people in three days (July 3 to 5) and registered 650 cases, seizing 296 kg of ganja and other narcotics.
