Coral Reefs Capable of Surviving Climate Crisis

  • Scientists identified nearly 1,66,000 sq km (64,000 sq miles) of coral reefs capable of surviving and recovering from climate change, three times more than previously estimated.

Supreme Court Notice on Aadhaar 'Misuse'

  • The Supreme Court sought responses from the Centre and the States on a plea alleging the misuse of Aadhaar cards as proof of citizenship, domicile and residence.
  • A Bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice V. Mohana issued notice on the plea by advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, which says Section 9 of the Aadhaar Act, 2016 expressly states that Aadhaar is not proof of citizenship or domicile.
  • The plea challenges the use of Aadhaar for date of birth and residence in Form-6, the fresh voter registration form, and seeks a complete overhaul of the electoral verification framework.

Anti-Defection Law and Party Mergers (Tenth Schedule)

  • Twenty Lok Sabha MPs of the Trinamool Congress moved to merge with the little-known Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) to escape disqualification under the Tenth Schedule (anti-defection law).
  • The anti-defection law was introduced by the 52nd Constitutional Amendment in 1985 through the Tenth Schedule; the original 'split' exemption (paragraph 3) was omitted in 2003, leaving only the 'merger' exemption (paragraph 4).
  • A merger escapes disqualification only if at least two-thirds of a party's legislators agree; the power to decide on disqualification rests with the Speaker or Chairman.

Cough Syrups Barred from Over-the-Counter Sale

  • A Health Ministry notification removed the word 'syrups' from the list of items exempted under the Drugs Rules, 1945, so medicinal cough syrups can no longer be sold without a doctor's prescription.
  • The Drugs Rules, 1945 are framed under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940; the move follows the deaths of 24 children in Madhya Pradesh last September from cough syrups adulterated with industrial solvents.
  • Cough syrups made in India have been linked to the deaths of more than 140 children in Africa and Central Asia since 2022.

Telegram Restricted till NEET Re-test

  • The Centre blocked the messaging app Telegram in India until June 22, on the National Testing Agency's request, calling it a response to organised cheating rackets defrauding candidates of the medical entrance re-examination.
  • The blocking was carried out by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre under the Ministry of Home Affairs; the agency called it 'calibrated and bounded in time'.
  • The Indian Air Force ferried question papers by Mi-17 helicopters and transport aircraft to over 20 locations for the June 21 re-test, with nearly five lakh security personnel deployed.

IAF to Join Exercise Pitch Black 2026

  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) will take part in Exercise Pitch Black 2026, the Royal Australian Air Force's largest multinational air combat exercise, in Australia's Northern Territory from July 20 to August.
  • It will bring together more than 100 aircraft and personnel from 19 allied and partner nations to enhance interoperability across the Indo-Pacific.

U.S.-Iran Deal to End War, Reopen Strait of Hormuz

  • The United States signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Iran on June 15 to end the war that began on February 28, lift the blockades in the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman, and open a 60-day window for negotiations on the nuclear question.
  • The deal opens the Strait of Hormuz unconditionally, lifts Iranian oil sanctions, unfreezes Iranian assets and commits Iran not to produce nuclear weapons; talks will aim to replace the 2016 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
  • The Strait of Hormuz is a vital oil shipping chokepoint; Israel, which opposed any deal short of regime change, said it would not withdraw from occupied southern Lebanon.

G7 Summit 2026 at Evian

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the G7 Summit outreach session at Evian, France, telling leaders that 'the world does not suffer from a shortage of resources, it suffers from a shortage of trust'.

India-Canada Ties Revived

  • Modi and Canadian PM Mark Carney advanced talks on an India-Canada Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and the Security and Energy Partnership signed in March; Canada's Cameco signed a CAD $2.6 billion deal for the long-term supply (2027-2035) of uranium.
  • Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal had visited Canada last month with a delegation of over 100 industry representatives.

State Finances 2024-25: CAG Report

  • Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Manipur and nine other States recorded surplus revenue in 2024-25 while 15 States had a deficit, according to the 'State Finances 2024-25' report released by Comptroller and Auditor General K. Sanjay Murthy.

PM-VBRY Employment Scheme

  • About 60 lakh first-time employees, including over 18 lakh women have benefited under the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana (PM-VBRY), an Employment-Linked Incentive (ELI) scheme operational from August 1, 2025 till July 31, 2027.

Textile and Apparel Exports Dip

  • India's textile and apparel exports fell about 2% to $35.78 billion in FY2025-26 (from $36.61 billion), with the rupee weakening from 86.60 to 94.83 against the U.S. dollar during the year.

White Paper Puts T.N. Debt at Rs.13.18 Lakh Crore

  • Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson released a White Paper on Tamil Nadu's finances, putting the State's total debt at Rs.13.18 lakh crore, including Rs.3.18 lakh crore of public sector undertakings; the direct headline debt is nearly Rs.10 lakh crore.
  • It said the State's Own Tax Revenue (SOTR) to GSDP ratio fell from 5.93% to 5.45%, the steepest decline among peer States (Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka), and that the 'own-tax effort has collapsed'.
  • Interest payments consume about 35% of SOTR; per capita debt rose to Rs.1,28,934; the elderly are projected to be 18.2% of the population by 2031, the highest among major States.

Revised Crop Loan Waiver

  • Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced a revised scheme giving a full waiver of cooperative crop loans up to Rs.75,000 to farmers of all categories (taken between May 1, 2025 and February 28, 2026), and a Rs.35,000 waiver for larger loans.
  • The scheme will benefit 14.43 lakh farmers at a cost of Rs.5,932.23 crore; Cauvery delta farmers' bodies called it 'inadequate' and 'discriminatory', demanding a full waiver.

CM Orders 231 New Sub-Stations

  • The Chief Minister ordered the setting up of 231 new electricity sub-stations at Rs.15,032 crore and the appointment of 15,058 workers for maintenance and repairs to strengthen the power infrastructure.
  • He said there is no power shortage in generation, but urban interruptions, including in Chennai, are due to ageing infrastructure and underground cable faults; projects worth Rs.2,275 crore will be implemented in Chennai.

Online Process for Private School Approvals

  • From July 1, private schools in Tamil Nadu can apply online for all certificates including recognition and renewal, said School Education Minister Rajmohan, who handed recognition orders to 848 private schools.
  • He urged private schools to reduce fees, display the fee structure on their websites and premises, and employ teachers who have cleared the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET).

Anna University-Bajaj Auto Skills Centre

  • Anna University signed an MoU with the Bajaj Auto Foundation to set up a 'Bajaj Engineering Skills Training' (BEST) centre at the College of Engineering, Guindy, Chennai, at a cost of Rs.15 crore.

Drunk-Driving Crackdown across T.N.

  • Tamil Nadu police booked 16,031 motorists for drunk driving between June 1 and 14 and seized 14,100 vehicles, including 13,299 two-wheelers, imposing fines totalling Rs.3.13 crore.
