Supreme Court Recognises the Economic Value of a Homemaker's Work

  • In Shishupal vs Surjeet, a Bench of Justices Sanjay Karol and N.K. Singh raised the motor-accident compensation for a homemaker's family from Rs 8.43 lakh to Rs 62.78 lakh, attaching an economic value of Rs 30,000 a month to her unpaid domestic work.
  • The Court ruled this Rs 30,000 floor must be raised by 10% every three years, and a woman's salary, where she earns one, is to be added on top.
  • It relied on Kirti vs Oriental Insurance (2021), which held that the economic value of a homemaker's work cannot be discounted merely because it is unpaid; the ruling applies only to accident compensation and creates no salary or pension right.

India's Defence Production Hits a Record High

  • India's annual defence production reached an all-time high of Rs 1.78 lakh crore in 2025-26, a 15.6% growth over the previous year's Rs 1.54 lakh crore.
  • Production has risen about 110% since 2020-21 (Rs 84,643 crore) and nearly four-fold since 2013-14 (Rs 43,746 crore).
  • Defence public sector units accounted for about 76% of output and the private sector for 24% (about Rs 42,000 crore). Defence Minister Rajnath Singh hailed the figures.

India-Russia RELOS Logistics Agreement Becomes Operational

  • The Reciprocal Exchange of Logistics Agreement (RELOS) between India and Russia became operational; it lets the two militaries use each other's bases and ports for fuel, supplies, repairs, joint exercises and disaster relief.
  • Signed in Moscow in February 2025 and ratified by President Vladimir Putin in December 2025, it caps deployments at 3,000 troops, runs for five years, allows no permanent stationing, and gives India access to Russian military facilities in the Arctic.
  • India's first such pact was LEMOA with the United States (2016); India now has logistics agreements with nine countries, including the US, UK, France, Japan, Australia and Singapore.

Centre Blocks Telegram Ahead of the NEET-UG Re-exam

  • The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology blocked nationwide access to Telegram until June 22 and barred editing of old messages until June 30, after cheating syndicates allegedly used the app's edit feature to backdate fake 'leaked' NEET papers.
  • NEET-UG, held on May 3, was cancelled on May 12 over paper-leak allegations and a CBI probe; the re-exam for nearly 22 lakh candidates is scheduled for June 21.
  • The Delhi High Court (Justice Tejas Karia) issued notice to the Union government on Telegram's petition challenging the suspension.

Modi Meets Trump on the Sidelines of the G7 Summit

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi met US President Donald Trump at Evian, France, on the fringes of the G7 Summit, which Modi attended as a special invitee.
  • Modi raised the safety of Indian seafarers, referring to the killing of three Indian sailors in a US strike off the coast of Oman, and both leaders agreed that keeping the Strait of Hormuz open was vital for the world economy.
  • Trump said the US and India were 'very close' to finalising a trade deal. The G7 groups Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, the US and the European Union.

US and Iran Reach a 14-Point Framework Agreement

  • A 14-point framework agreement between Tehran and Washington is to be signed in Geneva; Iran pledged never to produce nuclear weapons and to down-blend (dilute) its highly enriched uranium under International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) supervision.
  • The US will facilitate the release of frozen Iranian assets, create a plan for Iran's economic development involving $300 billion, and lift its naval blockade.
  • Iran agreed to let traffic through the Strait of Hormuz return to pre-war volumes within 30 days.

US Renames the Indo-Pacific Command as Pacific Command

  • The Pentagon is restoring the name 'US Pacific Command', reversing the 2018 renaming to 'US Indo-Pacific Command'; its area of responsibility, from western India to America's Pacific coast, is unchanged.
  • The command was first established after the Second World War. Analysts read the move as largely symbolic, given India's role in the Indo-Pacific.

Tributes Paid on Vanchinathan's Remembrance Day

  • Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan paid tribute to the freedom fighter Vanchinathan on his remembrance day.
  • In 1911, Vanchinathan shot dead Robert Ashe, the British Collector of Tirunelveli, at the Maniyachi railway station and then took his own life; he was associated with the Bharata Mata Association.

Tiruccherai - The Sacred 'Sara Kshetra'

  • Tiruccherai in Tamil Nadu, known as the Sara Kshetra, was featured for its temple where the presiding deity is Saranatha and the goddess Saranayaki.
  • Its temple tank, the Sara Pushkarini, is held to be the most sacred of nine tirthas; tradition says Brahma kept here the pot (kalasam) that preserved the Vedas. The shrine is mentioned in the Brahmanda and Bhavishyottara Puranas.

Bangladesh Clears a New Padma Barrage

  • Bangladesh has cleared a 2.1-km-long barrage on the Padma river (the name of the Ganga in Bangladesh) to store 2,900 million cubic metres of water and serve 6.5 crore people, at a cost of about Rs 39,170 crore over seven years.
  • The barrage will lie just 180 km downstream of West Bengal's Farakka barrage, which diverts Ganga water into the Bhagirathi-Hooghly to flush the Kolkata Port.
  • Under the 1996 Ganges Water Treaty, in the dry season each country must receive at least 35,000 cusecs of Farakka water in alternating 10-day periods; the treaty expires in December 2026 and renewal talks are under way. The India-Bangladesh Teesta treaty remains unsigned.

Jal Jeevan Mission Crosses 81% Rural Tap-Water Coverage

  • The Jal Jeevan Mission, the world's largest rural drinking-water programme, now provides tap water to more than 15.8 crore rural households (over 81% of rural India), up from just 3.23 crore (about 17%) at its 2019 launch; the target is 100% coverage by 2028.
  • The expansion saves more than 5.5 crore person-hours a day. Under Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari, over 1.55 crore rainwater-harvesting and groundwater-recharge structures were built by 31 May 2026.
  • India has nearly 18% of the world's population but only about 4% of its freshwater. The Ken-Betwa link is the country's first major river-interlinking project.

Mombasa Declaration Against Illegal Fishing

  • Fifteen countries from Africa, Asia, Europe, the Caribbean and the Pacific adopted the Mombasa Declaration to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.
  • The declaration calls for stronger port controls and information-sharing to protect fish stocks and the livelihoods of coastal communities.

RBI Transfers a Record Rs 2.87 Lakh Crore Surplus

  • The Reserve Bank of India approved a record surplus transfer of Rs 2.87 lakh crore to the Union government for 2025-26, in line with its Economic Capital Framework.
  • The RBI's balance sheet grew 20.6% in a year to Rs 91.97 lakh crore by March 2026. The transfer is non-tax revenue and is not part of the divisible pool shared with the States.

New Rural Jobs Mission to Replace MGNREGA from July 1

  • The Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin), or VB-G RAM G, comes into force on July 1, replacing the MGNREGA scheme launched in 2006.
  • The government says guaranteed work rises from 100 to 125 days per rural household; draft rules require States to bear 40% of the programme's cost, which worker unions have opposed.

UPI Now Handles 49% of Global Real-Time Digital Payments

  • India's UPI accounted for 49% of the world's real-time digital payments in 2025, an article by the Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and IT noted.
  • Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) has routed Rs 51 lakh crore and saved about Rs 4.3 lakh crore in leakages. The RBI's Financial Inclusion Index rose from 53.9 (March 2021) to 67.0 (March 2025).
  • India's Digital Public Infrastructure includes Aadhaar, UPI, DBT, GSTN, the Account Aggregator and the Unified Lending Interface (ULI).

T.N. Assembly Session Begins with the Governor's Address

  • Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar delivered the customary address to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, in the first session after the government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay won its trust vote.
  • By convention the Governor's address is read in English and the Speaker, J.C.D. Prabhakar, reads it in Tamil; the session opens with the Tamil Thai Vaazhthu and ends with the National Anthem.
  • A new Business Advisory Committee was constituted under the Speaker; the House strength stands at 228 after several resignations.

State White Paper Flags a 'Revenue Collapse'

  • The Tamil Nadu White Paper on State finances flagged a 'revenue collapse', reporting total debt of about Rs 13.18 lakh crore and a revenue deficit of Rs 78,326 crore.
  • The State's Own Tax Revenue for 2025-26 is Rs 1,92,493 crore, about two-thirds of its Total Revenue Receipts of Rs 2,93,763 crore; the paper says about Rs 1.23 lakh crore of annual revenue is being foregone. Tamil Nadu has the second-largest GSDP after Maharashtra.
  • Former Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu challenged the government to keep borrowing below the level during the previous DMK rule.

Korean Firm to Build a Mega Shipyard in Thoothukudi

  • A delegation from South Korea's HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), led by Young Hoon Kwon, met Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay over a mega greenfield shipyard at Thoothukudi.
  • The project envisages an investment of about Rs 38,000 crore and around 15,000 jobs; the special purpose vehicle is jointly promoted by SIPCOT and the V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority.

Common Space-Vehicle Facility for Thoothukudi

  • Tamil Nadu and IN-SPACe signed an agreement to set up a Common Technical Facility Centre for space vehicles at the Allikulam SIPCOT park, near the upcoming Kulasekarapattinam spaceport.
  • IN-SPACe will provide equipment worth Rs 100 crore while the State provides land and infrastructure; the centre will make launch-vehicle components, satellite systems, propulsion systems and avionics.

Kalaignar International Convention Centre Nearing Completion

  • The Rs 525-crore Kalaignar International Convention Centre on about 37.99 acres at Muttukadu on the East Coast Road is about 60% complete and is expected to be ready by December or early next year.
  • It has a column-free steel-truss roof spanning 71.50 metres; the exhibition hall can seat up to 15,000, the convention hall 5,000 and the auditorium 1,500, with parking for 1,706 cars.

CM Reviews the State Transport Department

  • Eight State-run transport corporations operate 21,527 buses and serve about 2.05 crore passengers a day, 64% of whom avail free travel, a review by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay noted.
  • The meeting discussed procuring AC electric buses, smart-card cashless ticketing and a Bus Rapid Transit System; government buses now reach 98.40% of villages with a population above 1,000.

Study Reaffirms the Universe Is Expanding Faster

  • A new study in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society reaffirms that the universe is expanding at an accelerating rate, rebutting a 2025 claim that dark energy had stopped driving this acceleration.
  • The team, led by astrophysicist Brodie Popovic, used Type Ia supernovae as cosmic distance markers. The universe is about 13.8 billion years old and is made of roughly 5% ordinary matter, 27% dark matter and 68% dark energy.

Three New Health Surveys Flag Rising Lifestyle Diseases

  • Three recently released surveys - the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-6), the NSO 80th Round on health consumption, and the National Health Accounts Estimates 2022-23 - have entered public debate.
  • Data from NFHS-6, collected in 2023-24, point to rising obesity, diabetes, hypertension and other non-communicable diseases, along with persistent anaemia. India is building an Integrated Health Information Platform (IHIP).

Chennai Doctors Use Brachytherapy for Breast Cancer

  • Doctors at Chennai's MGM Cancer Institute performed brachytherapy, an internal radiation therapy, on a 54-year-old woman with stage-II breast cancer after a lumpectomy.
  • Thin catheters delivered radiation precisely to the tumour site in four sessions over two days, sparing the heart, lungs and healthy tissue and helping preserve the breast.
