Clearance Revoked for Pallikaranai Marsh Project

The State Environment Impact Assessment Authority revoked the environmental clearance for Brigade Enterprises' 1,250-unit 'Morgan Heights' project on about 14.7 acres in Perumbakkam, within the Pallikaranai marshland Ramsar site.
The authority found construction had begun without the State Wetland Authority's permission under the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2017; the developer has appealed to the Supreme Court.

T.N. to Seek New Airport Site over Parandur

Tamil Nadu will look for an alternative site for the greenfield airport instead of Parandur, near Kancheepuram, where nearly 1,700 acres had already been acquired after the project was announced in 2022.

Resolution against Mekedatu; Mullaperiyar Level

The Assembly was to pass a resolution urging the Centre to refuse approval for Karnataka's proposed Mekedatu balancing reservoir on the Cauvery, after Karnataka filed a revised Detailed Project Report.

Manipuri Film 'Boong' Wins a BAFTA

Telegram Restricted till NEET Re-test

Telegram was called the 'new dark web' by the Centre before the Delhi High Court, and access to the app in India was restricted till June 22 under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, ahead of the June 21 NEET re-examination.
Cybercrime complaints involving the app rose from 75,688 in 2023 to about 2.75 lakh in 2025, with reported fraud crossing Rs.3,000 crore; Justice Tejas Kataria reserved judgment, questioning the rights of about 15 crore users.
Section 69A lets the Union government block online information in the interest of sovereignty, defence, security or public order; in Anuradha Bhasin v. Union of India the Supreme Court held that speech and trade over the internet are protected under Articles 19(1)(a) and 19(1)(g) and that curbs must pass the proportionality test.

Rajya Sabha By-polls in Jharkhand and Mizoram

The JMM's Vaidyanath Ram (30 votes) and BJP-backed Independent Parimal Nathwani (28 votes) won the two Jharkhand Rajya Sabha seats, while the Congress's Pranav Jha (20) lost as INDIA bloc legislators cross-voted.

Shiv Sena (UBT) Showcause to Six MPs

U.S.-Iran Deal to End the West Asia War

Strait of Hormuz and Transit Rights

The Iran-U.S. memorandum could give Iran a formal role in managing transit through the Strait of Hormuz, which normally handles about 130 ship transits a day, roughly a fifth of the world's crude oil.
Free passage is guaranteed only for 60 days; under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), transit passage cannot be charged tolls, but the U.S. has not ratified it and Iran has signed but not ratified it.

PM-KISAN 23rd Instalment of Rs.18,880 Crore

Prime Minister Modi will release the 23rd instalment of PM-KISAN from Tarakeswar, West Bengal, transferring Rs.2,000 each to over 9.44 crore farmers, totalling Rs.18,880 crore.
He will also launch the restructured Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana and Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme.

Rs.2,400 Crore under PM-VBRY Employment Scheme

The Prime Minister will disburse Rs.2,400 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana (PM-VBRY), an Employment-Linked Incentive scheme, to over 15 lakh beneficiaries at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
The scheme has an outlay of Rs.99,446 crore and targets 3.5 crore jobs in two years; first-time employees get Rs.15,000 and employers up to Rs.3,000 a month per new worker.

India-U.K. Social Security Pact to Save $500 Million

The India-U.K. Double Contribution Convention will come into force on July 15 along with the India-U.K. trade agreement (CETA), exempting Indian workers from U.K. social security for up to five years instead of three.
It will cover 90-95% of temporary Indian workers and save about $500 million in double payments.

Statistical Base Years Updated

The Ministry of Statistics updated key base years from 2011-12, releasing a new GDP series (base 2022-23) with a double-deflator method, a new Consumer Price Index (base 2024) and a new Index of Industrial Production (base 2022-23).
The Commerce Ministry updated the Wholesale Price Index and released a new Producer Price Index that is to replace the WPI within five years.

EPF Interest Rate Fixed at 8.25%

The Central Board of Trustees, chaired by Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, ratified an EPF interest rate of 8.25% for 2025-26 for over 7 crore members, the third year in a row at this rate.

Up to 3 Crore More Ration Cards

Food Minister Pralhad Joshi said up to 3 crore more ration cards can be issued after States removed 2.21 crore ineligible holders from the public distribution system, which now covers about 79 crore people.

NFHS-6: Child Stunting Falls

The sixth National Family Health Survey (NFHS-6) showed child stunting falling from 35.5% to 29.3% and institutional births reaching 90%, but only about 15% of children aged 6-23 months get an adequate diet.

Governor's Address Opens 17th Assembly

Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar delivered the customary address opening the first session of the 17th Tamil Nadu Assembly under the new government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, the first such address to pass without disruption in four years.
The National Anthem was played at both the start and the end of the address, a first; DMK members wore black badges reading 'Open your mouth, CM' in protest over crimes against women.

T.N. Investor Promotion Commission

New Levy on Liquor Makers

The government imposed an additional special fee on liquor manufacturers expected to yield up to Rs.1,000 crore a year, as the address noted the State's debt had doubled and tax revenue had fallen over five years.

Interim Pension Relief under UPS

Pending final rules of the Unified Pension Scheme, employees retiring after January 1, 2026 with at least 10 years of service will get interim relief of 30% of last basic pay or Rs.10,000, whichever is higher, plus dearness allowance.

DVAC Raids Seize Rs.37.81 Lakh at RTOs

The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) raided 60 offices and seized Rs.37.81 lakh in unaccounted cash from 40 of them, comprising 34 Regional Transport Offices and 6 Motor Vehicle Inspector offices.
The Kallakurichi RTO accounted for the largest seizure at Rs.3.77 lakh; the total included Rs.5.95 lakh traced through mobile payment apps.

Chennai Power Network to be Strengthened

The Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation (TNPDCL) will speed up projects after Chennai's peak demand hit 5,014 MW on June 8, including a Rs.59.52 crore plan to lay 288 km of underground cables.

Chennai Corporation Fines for Illegal Dumping

The Greater Chennai Corporation collected Rs.59.92 lakh in fines over a month for illegal dumping of garbage and debris in five central-zone areas.
From June 17, residents can pay property, water and sewerage taxes and access 42 services through the Corporation's official WhatsApp number.
