Right to Walk on Footpaths is a Fundamental Right: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court declared the freedom to walk on demarcated and well-maintained footpaths a fundamental right under Article 21, holding it has priority over movement by motorised vehicles.
Justice P.S. Narasimha, who authored the judgment along with Justice Atul S. Chandurkar, called walking the simplest human activity, inextricably connected to life.
The verdict came in a case seeking higher compensation for the death of a five-year-old boy crushed by a lorry while walking to school in Karnataka; the court awarded over Rs.11 lakh.
The court linked walking to Articles 19(1)(a), 19(1)(b) and 19(1)(c) (expression, assembly and association) and urged a statutory framework recognising the duty of local bodies to build footpaths.

Delhi HC Upholds Temporary Ban on Telegram amid NEET Row

The Delhi High Court upheld the Centre's temporary ban on the messaging platform Telegram, calling the action proportionate in view of its alleged use by cheating networks linked to NEET (UG) 2026.
Section 69A of the Information Technology (IT) Act was the legal basis; the court held the Act's broad definition of "information" includes software and computer programmes, and Telegram is a "computer resource".
The court accepted that channel-specific takedowns had failed, as operators kept creating mirror channels and backup groups after each action.

Census 2027: India's First Fully Digital Census Under Way

The 2027 Census is India's first fully digital Census, the first to collect caste data, and the first to allow residents to self-enumerate.
It relies on about 33 lakh government teachers and other enumerators surveying an estimated 1.4 billion people; each enumerator gets an honorarium of Rs.25,000.
The first phase is the Houselisting and Housing Operations (HLO); the second phase, Population Enumeration (with caste data), is scheduled for February 2027.
Originally due in 2021 but postponed by the pandemic, the count is happening six years late; data is monitored in real time via the Census Management and Monitoring System (CMMS).

Anti-Defection Law: Tenth Schedule Hollowed Out

The Tenth Schedule (anti-defection law) disqualifies a member who voluntarily resigns from the party or defies a party whip; a 2003 amendment removed the "split" provision and kept only the "merger" exception (two-thirds of legislators).
Engineered splits are now dressed up as mergers: six Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs seek to join the Eknath Shinde faction, and a TMC rebel group has merged with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI).

Self-Reliance: New Aluminium Extrusion Press at Ordnance Factory

The Tamil Nadu Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution moved by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay opposing Karnataka's plan to build a balancing reservoir across the Cauvery at Mekedatu, with all parties backing it.
The resolution cited the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal's 2007 final award and the Supreme Court's 2018 verdict, which held the Cauvery a deficit basin where water is already apportioned.
