Centre Tightens FCRA Rules for Foreign-Funded NGOs

Amended Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA), 2010 Rules notified by the Union Home Ministry require NGOs to stick to a list of activities specified for each of five registration categories: social, economic, educational, cultural and religious.
NGOs must now disclose their activities, geographical scope, websites, social media accounts and publications, and pay separate fees for each category and each State or Union Territory.
Misuse of funds attracts a penalty of up to 30% of the amount misused or Rs.1 lakh, whichever is higher; the definition of 'key functionary' now includes trustees, partners, the Karta of a Hindu Undivided Family and governing body members.

President Murmu Presents Second Set of Padma Awards

President Droupadi Murmu presented the remaining 65 of this year's 131 Padma Awards (5 Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan and 113 Padma Shri); 10 of the awardees are from Tamil Nadu.

George Kurian Resigns as Union Minister

Telegram Ban Lifted; IT Act Blocking Power Debated

The temporary block on Telegram imposed ahead of the medical entrance re-test was lifted on Tuesday; the Delhi High Court had endorsed the move in a June 19 order, and access resumed after the week-long order expired.
The case stretched the meaning of 'information' under Section 2(1)(v) of the IT Act, 2000 and used the blocking power of Section 69A to cover an entire platform that has about 150 million users.
Telegram cited the Supreme Court's Anuradha Bhasin judgment that restrictions on fundamental rights must be proportionate and the least restrictive measure.

PM Modi Addresses Trainee IAS Officers

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the 2024-batch trainee civil servants, telling them that every administrative decision must be citizen-centric and that 'citizens are God'.

Wang Yi-Doval Talks; Push to Revive India-China Mechanisms

India-US Begin Interim Trade Talks

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer began high-level talks in New Delhi to finalise an interim bilateral trade agreement; Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also held consultations.
The US Trade Representative had recommended an additional 12.5% tariff on imports from 54 countries including India under Section 301 of the US Trade Act, 1974; the existing 10% provisional tariff expires on July 24.

IMO Plan to Evacuate Ships from the Persian Gulf

IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez announced a plan to evacuate all ships and the 11,000 seafarers stranded in the Persian Gulf because of the West Asia war, working with Iran, Oman, coastal states, the US and the maritime industry.
Two routes around the Strait of Hormuz, one along the Omani coast and one along the Iranian coast, will be used; these can handle 20 to 30 ships a day, against about 130 ships daily before the war.

Iran-US MoU Eases India's Energy Flow

A 14-point memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States signed on June 17 opened a 60-day window to settle broader issues, including the nuclear question.
Since the MoU, 11 India-bound vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz, including three Indian-flagged crude oil tankers each carrying over 2,85,000 tonnes of crude; 10 Indian-flagged vessels still remain in the Gulf region, said the External Affairs Ministry.

India Assumes BRICS Chairmanship for 2026

India's BRICS chairmanship for 2026 will advance Global South priorities under the theme 'Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability', PM Modi told a meeting of the National Security Advisers of member countries.
The two-day meeting discussed energy and food security, supply-chain disruption, emerging technologies misused by terrorist networks, cyber security and climate-induced instability.

Japanese PM Takaichi to Visit Delhi

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi will hold her July 1 to 3 interactions in Delhi instead of Guwahati, owing to a tight schedule and an ongoing Japanese Parliament session; it is her first official visit to India.
The cancelled Guwahati leg was meant to highlight the importance of India's northeast in Japan's plans for South and Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific.

TReDS is an online platform that lets small businesses auction their invoices or trade receivables to banks to unlock working capital.

SEBI Proposes Common Advertisement Code

SEBI proposed a common advertisement code for regulated entities, allowing celebrity endorsements with disclaimers and shifting from prior approval to a post-issuance reporting model; public comments are open till July 14.

Telecom Revenue Crosses Rs.1.05 Lakh Crore

Telecom gross revenue rose 6.9% to Rs.1.05 lakh crore in the January to March quarter, with adjusted gross revenue (AGR) up 9.45% to Rs.86,716 crore, according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
Jio led with Rs.32,467.88 crore, followed by Airtel (Rs.28,773.59 crore) and Vodafone Idea (Rs.8,195.12 crore); the three together held 83.59% of AGR.

56 Critical Mineral Blocks Auctioned

The Union Mines Ministry said 56 of 88 critical and strategic mineral blocks have been cumulatively auctioned across all tranches; the seventh tranche offered 19 blocks, of which 10 were auctioned.

CAG Flags Kerala's Finances

Kerala's revenue receipts grew only 0.30% over 2023-24, a decadal low, while the GSDP grew 9.97% in nominal terms in 2024-25, according to the Comptroller and Auditor General.
Committed expenditure on salaries, pensions and interest of Rs.98,563.59 crore accounted for about 79% of revenue receipts in 2024-25.

Thaaimaaman Thanga Mothira Thittam (Gold Ring Scheme)

The Tamil Nadu government allocated Rs.755.83 crore annually for a scheme giving a one-gram gold ring to babies born in government hospitals to parents who are permanent residents of the State.
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay will launch it on September 15, the birth anniversary of C.N. Annadurai; babies born from June 22, 2026 onward will benefit.

CM Vijay's Reply on Cooperative Federalism

Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay replying to the Motion of Thanks on the Governor's Address, said his government stands firm on cooperative federalism and State autonomy while remaining ideologically opposed to the Centre but cooperating administratively.
He said eight Ministers in his government are from the Scheduled Castes and four are women, and listed achievements including the Singappenn women's safety force and the closure of 717 liquor shops; the Assembly was adjourned sine die.

Madras HC Strikes Down Section 34-C of Registration Act

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court struck down Section 34-C of the Registration Act, holding it ultra vires the Constitution and violative of Articles 14, 21 and 300A.
The court held the provision wrongly let the Sub-Registrar, a ministerial authority, probe questions of title that fall within the exclusive province of courts, and directed the Inspector General of Registration to publish a survey-number-wise list of encumbrances.

TNGECL Submits DPR for 25,000 MW Green Energy Park

The Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation submitted a detailed project report for a 25,000 MW integrated green energy park to make the State a leading renewable-energy hub.
It is planned on about 1 lakh to 1.25 lakh acres of fallow agricultural land in Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi and Karur districts, in five phases adding 5,000 MW a year with public-private participation.

Tiruvallur Ammonia Gas Leak Toll Rises to 9

The toll in the ammonia gas leak at a private seafood processing and export facility near Periyapalayam in Tiruvallur district rose to nine; all the victims were women labourers from Odisha and Assam.
A total of 83 persons were affected and 69 hospitalised; a special committee submitted its first report to the Chief Minister within 24 hours as ordered.

TN Demands June-July Cauvery Water at CWMA Meeting

At the 52nd meeting of the Cauvery Water Management Authority in Delhi, Tamil Nadu urged that Karnataka be directed to release the due June and July water; only 2.662 TMC reached Biligundlu by June 22 against 6.737 TMC due, a shortfall of 4.075 TMC.
Tamil Nadu sought the full release of 9.19 TMC for June and 31.24 TMC for July; separately, the Assembly unanimously passed a resolution opposing Karnataka's proposed Mekedatu dam.

Group 1 Preliminary Exam on September 6

The State public service recruitment board announced that the Group 1 Preliminary examination will be held on September 6, 2026, for 26 vacancies including Deputy Collector, Assistant Commissioner and District Registrar.
Online applications are open from June 30 to July 29, 2026, and the exam fee can be paid through UPI.

Power Sector White Paper and Smart Meters

A White Paper on the electricity sector will be released on June 25 by Electricity Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar; the Electricity Board will install 6.75 lakh smart meters in government offices, with the tender to be issued shortly.

The Enforcement Directorate conducted simultaneous searches at 18 locations in Chennai, Trichy, Coimbatore and Madurai in the polytechnic lecturer recruitment malpractice case of the 2017 examination, in which over 200 candidates' marks were found altered.

TN Moves Supreme Court on Thirupparankundram Lamp

The Tamil Nadu government moved the Supreme Court challenging Madras High Court orders directing the Subramaniya Swamy Temple management to light the Karthigai Deepam at the deepathoon atop the Thirupparankundram hill in Madurai district.

Olympic Stadium Planned at Thirupporur

Sports Minister Aadhav Arjuna announced an international-standard Olympic stadium on 120 acres at Thirupporur, on Olympic Day at the Nehru Indoor Stadium, Chennai, where new grounds worth Rs.28 crore were also opened.
The State also signed an MoU with JSW Sports' Inspire Institute of Sport for knowledge sharing in athletics, judo and boxing.

TAHDCO Skill Training for Adi Dravidar Youth

The Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation (TAHDCO) with CIPET will train Adi Dravidar and tribal youth as plastic-processing machine operators, with a monthly stipend of Rs.2,000 during the four-month course.

Madras HC Full Bench on Parole during Appeals

A five-judge Full Bench of the Madras High Court ruled that prisoners can be granted parole even when appeals against their conviction are pending.
