Supreme Court Makes Trauma Care a Fundamental Right

  • In SaveLIFE Foundation vs Union of India (judgment on May 26, 2026), the Supreme Court held that the right to trauma care is part of the right to life under Article 21, covering the whole chain from the injury site to definitive hospital treatment.
  • The Bench issued nine binding directions, including merging all emergency numbers (100, 101, 102, 108) into helpline 112 within three months, and operationalising the PM RAHAT cashless treatment scheme for road-crash victims.
  • About 4.67 lakh Indians die every year from injuries, with road crashes alone causing nearly 1.77 lakh deaths; trauma is the leading cause of death among Indians aged 18 to 45.

Passport is a Travel Document, Not Proof of Citizenship

  • A senior Ministry of External Affairs official clarified that the Indian passport is a travel document and not a document of citizenship, so it cannot be used to challenge exclusion from the voter list.
  • The clarification comes as the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is under way in 16 States.
  • Marking the 14th Passport Seva Divas (June 24), the Ministry said 27 countries give visa-free entry, 47 offer visa on arrival and 66 provide e-visas to Indian passport holders, served by 545 Passport Seva Kendras.

Stricter FCRA Rules on Foreign Donations to NGOs

  • The Union Home Ministry notified the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Rules, 2026 on June 22, tightening limits on NGOs receiving foreign donations and binding them to stated purposes, States and geographical areas.

IAEA to Inspect Iran After U.S.-Iran MoU

  • IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said inspections in Iran will take place soon, following a 14-point memorandum of understanding signed between the United States and Iran to end the war.
  • The MoU provides for the U.S. to remove forces near Iran within 30 days, the demining of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran and Oman, and at least $300 billion for Iran's reconstruction.
  • The IAEA estimates Iran held 440.9 kg of uranium enriched up to 60% before the attacks, enough for about 10 nuclear weapons if enriched further.

China Ready to Work with India to Build Trust

  • China is ready to work with India to "enhance mutual trust and dispel doubts", its Foreign Ministry said, a day after Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.
  • The meeting followed the BRICS National Security Advisers' meeting held in New Delhi on June 22 and 23, with India as the BRICS rotating chair.

Iran Invites Modi to Khamenei's Funeral

  • Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian invited Prime Minister Modi to the burial ceremonies of late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a joint Israel-U.S. attack on February 28.
  • The ceremonies are to be held in Tehran, Qom and Mashhad between July 5 and 9.

U.S. Senate Resolution Against Trump's Iran War

  • The U.S. Senate passed a resolution by 50 to 48 votes directing President Trump to remove U.S. forces from hostilities with Iran unless Congress explicitly authorises military action.
  • It invokes the War Powers Act of 1973, under which a President must obtain Congress's authorisation within 60 days of introducing forces into hostilities.

First-Ever Index of Services Production (ISP)

  • The Statistics Ministry will release the first-ever Index of Services Production (ISP) with base year 2024-25; the figure for April 2026 will be announced on July 14, with a 60-day lag thereafter.

Nirav Modi Liable to Pay Bank of India Rs.108 Crore

  • The High Court in London ruled that fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi is liable to pay Bank of India over $11.5 million (about Rs.108 crore) on a personal loan guarantee.
  • He remains in prison fighting extradition to India in a separate $2 billion Punjab National Bank fraud case.

Gold Rings for Newborns: Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam

  • Under the new Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam, the Tamil Nadu government will gift one-gram gold rings to babies born in government hospitals, spending about Rs.755.83 crore a year on roughly 4.42 lakh newborns.
  • The rings, costing about Rs.17,000 each at current rates, will be procured by the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation (TNMSC); the move has drawn criticism from public health professionals.

Supreme Court Backs Lower NEET-SS Cut-Off for Govt Doctors

  • The Supreme Court said the qualifying percentile for super-speciality (NEET-SS) seats must be reduced for in-service government doctors, as they serve the public while studying.
  • The case, filed by the Tamil Nadu Medical Officers' Association, challenged the diversion of 152 in-service super-speciality seats in the State to the all-India quota.

Healthy and Hygienic Food Streets in Six Cities

  • The Health Department will launch Healthy and Hygienic Food Streets on a pilot basis in Chennai, Tiruchi, Madurai, Salem, Coimbatore and Tiruppur, selecting one street in each.
  • The government also plans typhoid vaccination for street food handlers such as cooks and servers to protect against infectious diseases.

Road Named After Major Mukund Varadarajan

  • The State government ordered the naming of a road in Tambaram after late Army officer and Ashoka Chakra recipient Major Mukund Varadarajan, following a request from the Army.

Ammonia Gas Leak Toll Rises to 10 in Tiruvallur

  • The death toll in the ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing and export facility in Tiruvallur district rose to 10, with another worker from Odisha dying; the leak occurred on June 21.
  • A total of 83 people were affected; 17 patients were on ventilator support and 21 on nasal oxygen.

Sports Authority to Take Over Disputing Associations

  • Sports Minister Aadhav Arjuna said the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDATN) will take over the administration of sports associations whose disputes remain unresolved for many months.
  • He said the government will provide flight tickets for State-level teams and ensure equal prize money for men's and women's teams; a demand was raised to raise the sports quota in government jobs from 3% to 5% or 7%.
