Two powerful earthquakes, an initial 7.2 magnitude tremor followed within a minute by a stronger 7.5, struck west of Caracas in Venezuela, killing at least 188 and injuring over 1,500.

Three States Reach Tungabhadra Basin Consensus

Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana reached a "historic" consensus to protect the interests of farmers in the Tungabhadra basin; the event marked the inauguration of 33 new spillway gates of the reservoir in Vijayanagara, Karnataka.

Kamarajar Port to Build Second Container Terminal

Kamarajar Port will begin construction of a second container terminal in 2027 at an estimated cost of Rs.4,300 crore, awaiting the Centre's approval.

FCRA Amendment Rules, 2026 Notified

The Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Rules, 2026 were notified on June 22, requiring every NGO registered under the FCRA, 2010 to confine its work to the activities and the States or Union Territories named in its registration.
NGOs must now register under one of five categories (social, economic, educational, cultural, religious), disclose their social media handles and websites, and are barred from any content of a "political nature".
Opposition leaders K.C. Venugopal and John Brittas wrote to the Centre seeking withdrawal; over 20,000 FCRA registrations have been revoked over the past decade.

Drug Track-and-Trace Framework Expanded

The Union Health Ministry amended the Drugs Rules, 1945 to expand Schedule H2 under the QR code-based track-and-trace framework, to curb spurious and substandard medicines.
All vaccines, antimicrobials, narcotic and psychotropic drugs (under the NDPS Act, 1985) and all anti-cancer drugs are now covered.
The QR or bar code on primary packaging will store the product identity, batch number, manufacturing and expiry dates, and licence number.

Netra AEW&C Gets Final Operational Clearance

The indigenous Netra Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) system received Final Operational Clearance (FOC); it was developed by the Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) of the DRDO and mounted on a Brazilian Embraer EMB-145I platform.
India is the fifth country to develop such a capability; Netra played a role in the 2019 Balakot strikes and in Operation Sindoor.
The Cabinet Committee on Security approved the development of six more AEW&C Mk-1A systems by CABS.

Mahesh Dixit Appointed Director, Intelligence Bureau

Mahesh Dixit, a 1993-batch IPS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, was appointed Director of the Intelligence Bureau (DIB) for a two-year tenure, succeeding Tapan Kumar Deka.
A medical doctor by education, he was chief of the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau in Jammu and Kashmir in 2020, after the revocation of Article 370.

CBI Operation Chakra-VI Against Digital Arrest Scams

The CBI searched more than 80 locations across 15 States and Delhi in connection with over 200 "digital arrest" scam cases, forming 60 special teams under Operation Chakra-VI.
Two accused, Naresh from Chennai and Sanjib Saha from Kolkata, were arrested; mule bank accounts had laundered about Rs.2 crore of suspected proceeds.

Emergency Introduced in NCERT Class 9 Textbook

On the 51st anniversary of the 1975 Emergency, the NCERT introduced the Emergency for the first time at the Class 9 level, in the textbook "Understanding Society: India and Beyond".
The National Emergency was imposed in June 1975 on the grounds of "internal disturbance" and lifted in 1977; the text notes the role of Jayaprakash Narayan.

Strait of Hormuz - A Maritime Flashpoint

Iran's Revolutionary Guards warned that vessels crossing the Strait of Hormuz without authorisation would be "dealt with", and announced plans to impose maritime service fees.
The Strait carries about 11 to 12% of global seaborne trade, roughly a quarter of the world's fossil fuels and about 20% of LNG.
The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) announced a 60-day evacuation plan for stranded ships; about 57 ships carrying 1,100 seafarers have transited since June 23.

Dinesh Trivedi is India's New High Commissioner to Bangladesh

Dinesh Trivedi assumed office as India's High Commissioner to Bangladesh, becoming the first politician to hold the role; he presented his credentials to President Mohammed Shahabuddin.
He announced the resumption of general travel visas for Bangladesh nationals from June 28 at five centres: Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chattogram, Sylhet and Khulna.

Bangladesh-China Teesta Project and 13 Agreements

On his first official visit to China, Bangladesh PM Tarique Rahman received Chinese proposals for the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project, which involves dredging over 100 km of the river.
13 agreements were signed covering investment, trade, education and health; the Teesta is a transboundary river shared by Bangladesh and India.

France and Italy Plan Post-UNIFIL Coalition in Lebanon

France and Italy proposed setting up a multinational coalition to succeed the UN peacekeeping force UNIFIL in Lebanon, announced after talks between President Macron and PM Giorgia Meloni at Antibes.
France is among the biggest contributors to UNIFIL.

India-South Korea Shipbuilding Push

A Hyundai subsidiary signed an MoU with Cochin Shipyard Limited and plans a $4 billion investment in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, for a green shipyard.
South Korea's "big three" shipbuilders are Samsung Heavy Industries, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering and Hanwha Ocean.

States Must Borrow for Capital Expenditure: FM

Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu launched a facility for transit passengers to complete immigration at the origin airport, with the first service operated by Air India from Varanasi.
Based on a hub-and-spoke model, it will be rolled out at Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Kochi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai and other airports.

White Paper Puts Power Utilities' Debt at Rs.2.47 Lakh Crore

Electricity Minister R. Nirmalkumar released a White Paper putting the total debt of the State's four power corporations (TNPDCL, TNPGCL, TNGECL and TANTRANSCO) at Rs.2.47 lakh crore.
It cited a manpower shortfall of about 45% (sanctioned strength 1,40,635, with 65,921 vacancies) and proposed the recruitment of 15,000 personnel; there will be no tariff revision this year.
Former Minister V. Senthilbalaji countered that the power utilities' debt in 2021 was Rs.1,59,731 crore and that generation capacity had been raised by 9,000 MW.

DVAC Books Former Minister E.V. Velu

The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) booked former Highways Minister E.V. Velu and several officials under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and searched about 20 locations across Tamil Nadu.
It is the first major corruption crackdown after the TVK government came to power, based on a 2022 complaint by Jayaram Venkatesan of Arappor Iyakkam.

300 New Government Buses Flagged Off

The Chief Minister flagged off over 300 new buses procured at a cost of Rs.127 crore, comprising 164 diesel and 136 CNG buses.

Ammonia Gas Leak in Tiruvallur

The death toll rose to 13 in an ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing and export facility in Tiruvallur district; 43 people are under treatment, of whom 14 are on ventilators.

CM Opposes Disinvestment of NLC India

Doctors at Gleneagles Hospital, Chennai, performed India's first adult lung transplant using lungs from a 13-year-old brain-dead donor, on a 39-year-old woman from Kolkata with interstitial lung disease.
The patient was off oxygen by the third day and was discharged in 12 days.
