Shipping Curbs Lifted in the Persian Gulf

  • The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), India's maritime regulator, stood by its June 26 directive removing curbs on Indian seafarers and shipowners operating in the Persian Gulf, despite a fresh surge in regional hostilities.
  • The move came after the International Maritime Organization (IMO) halted its evacuation of stranded ships following recent attacks; some Indian-flagged vessels are awaiting transit permission from Omani authorities and Iran's Persian Gulf Strait Authority.

PM Modi's Seychelles Visit: 19 Outcomes

  • Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched a second day of drone and missile attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait, in response to US airstrikes on the Islamic Republic. Bahrain hosts the US Navy's Fifth Fleet.

India-UK Free Trade Agreement Comes Into Force

  • The India-UK Free Trade Agreement, described as the most economically significant deal the UK has done since leaving the European Union, comes into force in July 2026. Bilateral trade was already worth over £40 billion a year, and the deal is forecast to boost Indian GDP by about £5 billion.
  • Under the deal, 99% of UK tariff lines will be duty-free for Indian products, while India will remove or reduce tariffs on 90% of its tariff lines for UK goods. It benefits Indian textiles, leather and jewellery, and UK aerospace, automotive, medical devices and whisky, and spans 30 chapters.

QR Codes to Track Down Fake Drugs

  • A Union Health Ministry notification will require a barcode or QR code on each pack of top drug brands so buyers can verify authenticity and authorities can trace counterfeits, recalls and contaminated batches.
  • Backed by the Jan Vishwas Act, 2025, the framework aims to address the US FDA's and the European Medicines Agency's recurring concerns over quality control, raised after earlier cases of contaminated cough syrups.

Pulse Polio Immunisation Campaign Launched

  • Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay launched the national Pulse Polio Immunisation Campaign at the Government Adi Dravidar Welfare School in Palavakkam, near Chennai, by administering oral polio drops to children.
