A committee led by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai will study family laws in the State and submit a report in four weeks.
Adivasis, indigenous people, Kurmis and other recognised ancient tribal communities will be excluded; the law may affect Muslims (about 27% of the State) and Christians, who follow different family laws.

West Bengal passes two preventive detention laws

The West Bengal Public Safety and Control of Anti-Social Activities Bill, 2026 empowers the government to detain a person for up to a year to prevent future anti-social activity and restricts access to a lawyer.
An advisory board headed by a sitting or former High Court judge will scrutinise every detention within three weeks; a second law, the West Bengal Maintenance of Public Order (Amendment) Bill, 2026, makes those who damage public or private property pay compensation.

Army to raise 'Baaz Battalions' for drone warfare

The Indian Army is raising dedicated 'Baaz Battalions' to enhance its Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) capability for battlefield surveillance, intelligence gathering and rapid response.
Built upon the Army's existing RPA Flights, the battalions will centralise the entire lifecycle of drone operations under a specialist pool of trained personnel.

DRDO gets new Delegation of Financial Powers (DFP-2026)

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh released the Delegation of Financial Powers to DRDO (DFP-2026), a reform aimed at faster research and development, advancing the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

U.S. and Iran pause strikes over Strait of Hormuz

The U.S. and Iran paused their attacks after four days of trading strikes, with a meeting expected in Doha, Qatar; U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are flying there.

Pakistan air strikes target Afghan militants

The Afghan government reported 36 civilians killed and 163 wounded in strikes on three eastern provinces, including Paktia; talks are expected to resume on Tuesday.

China imposes export controls on 20 Japanese entities

China put 20 more Japanese organisations on a blacklist over the export of dual-use items, saying they had participated in "enhancing Japan's military capabilities".
Relations have been strained since Japanese PM Sanae Takaichi suggested in November that Tokyo may react militarily to an attack on Taiwan.

U.S. Supreme Court backs Trump on firing regulators

The U.S. Supreme Court backed President Donald Trump's firing of a Democratic Federal Trade Commission member, expanding his powers to remove leaders of independent regulators, while in another case it blocked his firing of a Federal Reserve Governor, upholding the central bank's independence.

Sabarimala gold theft: SIT finds conspiracy

An interim report by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on the alleged misappropriation of gold from the Sabarimala Ayyappa temple found a conspiracy by Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) staff.
The dwarapalaka (guardian deity) idols, gold-clad in 1998, were taken to Chennai in 2019; the officials deliberately described the gold coverings as copper plates, the gold being removed and a thin film plated instead. The case is posted for July 20.

Ram Temple donation embezzlement case

Sewage sludge treatment can boost biogas: Anna University study

An Anna University study found that advanced treatment of sewage sludge in Chennai's plants could raise biogas production by nearly 28% (up to 31,365 cubic metres at an STP), as the sludge contained heavy metals only in low concentrations.
Chennai treats 650 million litres of sewage a day through 20 STPs, generating 94 tonnes of dry sludge; the study was published in the Environmental Monitoring and Assessment journal.

Delhi notifies new Electric Vehicle policy

Delhi's new EV policy mandates that only electric two-wheelers ply on the city's roads from April 1, 2028, with only electric three-wheelers and N1 trucks to be registered from January 1, 2027.
The policy carries a Rs.7,000 crore implementation budget (Rs.15,000 crore overall), gives no subsidy for hybrids, and plans 32,000 charging points; Transport Secretary Niharika Rai said 46% of air pollution is caused by two- and three-wheelers.

Industrial output growth hits 5-month high of 5.1%

India's industrial output grew 5.1% in May, a five-month high, up from 4.2% a year earlier, driven by manufacturing (5.5%) and a two-year-high in electricity and gas (9.9%); mining contracted 1.6% for the fifth straight month.
The Ministry of Statistics tweaked the new Index of Industrial Production (IIP) series (base year 2022-23), adopting the Producer Price Index (PPI) in place of the Wholesale Price Index (WPI).

VB-G RAM G to replace MGNREGA from July 1

The Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin), or VB-G RAM G, becomes operational on July 1, replacing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
It shifts from a demand-driven to a supply-driven scheme, raises guaranteed workdays from 100 to 125, but raises the States' share from 10% to 40% of total expenditure; Brinda Karat and several States opposed the funding shift.

Cabinet okays Rs.30,000 crore more for NIIF

The Union Cabinet approved an additional Rs.30,000 crore investment in the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF), taking the government's total commitment to Rs.60,000 crore; the funds will set up NIIF's second infrastructure fund.
NIIF is India's sovereign anchored fund in which the government holds a 49% stake; it manages capital commitments of about Rs.40,000 crore.

FPIs pour record Rs.53,363 crore into debt

Foreign Portfolio Investors poured a record Rs.53,363 crore into debt securities in June 2026, even as equity outflows continued for a fourth straight month at Rs.51,456 crore.
The debt inflows came weeks after the Finance Ministry exempted government securities from long-term capital gains and raised the General Limit and Fully Accessible Route (FAR) tenures to deepen bond markets.

CBSE relaxes 3-language policy for Classes 7, 8, 9

The CBSE relaxed the three-language policy for students of Classes 7, 8 and 9 who had already opted for two foreign languages, allowing them to continue while adding one Indian language.
The National Education Policy (NEP), 2020 recommends learning three languages with at least two native to India; for Class 9, the third language (R3) will be assessed only by internal school-based assessment, and the 2026-27 Class 10 batch is exempt.

PM Family Care Tracker launched

Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah launched the PM Family Care Tracker (PM-FCT), a digital platform to strengthen maternal and child health, nutrition and family welfare, piloted in Gujarat.
It tracks pregnant women, newborns, infants, children and adolescents up to 18 years, and features digital Health Passports for families.

He stressed action against drug trafficking and illegal sand and mineral mining, 100% safety for women and children, and ensuring crowd safety at temple festivals and public events following the Karur stampede in which 41 people died.

State women's panel orders inquiry into Tiruvallur ammonia leak

The Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women (TNSCW) ordered a comprehensive inquiry into the ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing unit in Tiruvallur district that has claimed the lives of 16 migrant workers, mostly women from Odisha and other States.
The Tiruvallur Collector must submit a detailed report in four weeks; 41 workers from Jharkhand remain stranded, awaiting repatriation, while the State provides food, shelter and medical aid.

Mylswamy Annadurai to head Curriculum Design Committee

Former ISRO scientist Mylswamy Annadurai will be the new Chairman of the Curriculum Design Committee, replacing biologist Sultan Ahmed Ismail; the School Education Department issued a Government Order reconstituting the committee.

Chennai anti-drug drive: 90 held in a week

Chennai police arrested 90 people in a week-long special anti-drug drive (June 21 to 27), seizing 58 kg of ganja, 395 g of methamphetamine, 6 g of cocaine and 57,224 narcotic tablets, and registering 50 cases.
Greater Chennai Police Commissioner A. Amalraj warned that such intensive action would continue.

Heavy rain forecast for Tamil Nadu; fishermen warned

The Chennai weather centre forecast heavy rain at isolated places in Tamil Nadu on June 30 and July 1, especially in the hill areas of Coimbatore, Tirupur, the Nilgiris, Dindigul, Theni, Erode and Salem, due to a low-pressure area off the coast.
A cyclonic wind of up to 60 kmph may blow over the Gulf of Mannar and Kanyakumari coast; fishermen were advised not to venture there, and Karur recorded the State's highest temperature at 102.2 degrees Fahrenheit.

India's AI push and the case for low R&D spending

India spends just about 0.65% of its GDP on research and development (R&D), well below China (2.4%), the United States (3.5%), South Korea (4.9%) and Israel (5.4%), even as it builds AI-ready infrastructure.
India's digital public infrastructure offers a template: UPI now processes 250 billion transactions worth $3.4 trillion a year (half of the world's real-time digital payments), and Aadhaar enrolled 1.38 billion people; the home-grown Sarvam model has shown frontier models can be trained on Indian soil.

MoSPI accepts 216 reforms for statistical system

Principal Secretary to the PM, P.K. Mishra, said the Ministry of Statistics (MoSPI) accepted 216 recommendations for time-bound reform, after the statistical system faced outdated datasets and delays in dissemination.
Since February, the government has released updated series of national accounts, the IIP, the Consumer Price Index and the WPI, and introduced the Producer Price Index and the Index of Services Production; Mishra said AI adoption must be guided by strong governance for quality, privacy and transparency.
