Indian-origin NASA astronaut Anil Menon to fly to the Space Station on July 14

NASA astronaut Anil Menon, 49, of Indian descent, will travel to the International Space Station on July 14 aboard Soyuz MS-29 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
He will spend eight months on the Space Station conducting research on human health and space medicine in microgravity.
Born in Minneapolis to Indian and Ukrainian parents, he joined NASA in 2014 as a flight surgeon, was selected as an astronaut in December 2021, and was SpaceX's first flight surgeon.
His wife Anna Menon is also an astronaut and flew on the Polaris Dawn private mission in 2024.

China succeeds in first reusable rocket recovery test

China successfully tested and recovered a reusable rocket, the Long March-10P, for the first time. The first-stage booster landed on a floating platform at sea.
The rocket is about 63 metres tall and 5 metres in diameter, liquid-fuelled, weighs about 760 tonnes and produces about 890 tonnes of thrust.
The United States' SpaceX first achieved this in December 2015. China had failed in two attempts last year.
The rocket is intended to support China's crewed lunar mission and to cut launch costs.

Government amends rules to regulate medicines with high alcohol content

The Union Health Ministry has removed the exemption from licensing for formulations containing more than 12% v/v ethyl alcohol in quantities exceeding 30 ml, previously covered under Schedule K of the Drugs Rules, 1945.
Such products must now obtain licences under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and are shifted to Schedule H1, which mandates sale only against the prescription of a registered medical practitioner and stricter record-keeping.
Certain preparations such as tinctures of cardamom and ginger contain up to 80% to 90% v/v ethyl alcohol, making them susceptible to misuse for intoxication.

Chennai doctors replace two heart valves without open surgery

A 58-year-old man underwent a completely catheter-based replacement of two failing heart valves without repeat open-heart surgery at Kauvery Hospital, Alwarpet, Chennai.
He had undergone a Ross procedure nearly 25 years ago, in which his own pulmonary valve replaced a diseased aortic valve while the pulmonary valve was replaced with a donor valve. Both replacement valves had deteriorated over time.
The procedure was performed in a hybrid operating room under general anaesthesia and involved extensive AI-based predictive modelling and virtual valve implantation to aid planning.

National Green Tribunal stays construction of Ennore SEZ thermal power plant

The Southern Bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) restrained the Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation (formerly Tangedco) from any construction related to the 2x660 MW Ennore SEZ Thermal Power Plant at Vayalur village, Tiruvallur district, for four weeks.
The order was passed by a Bench of Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana and expert member Prashant Gargava, on a petition by Selvaraj Duraiswamy.
The applicant contended that the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance granted in January 2014 had expired, and that the Environmental Clearance (EC) expired on December 31, 2025, yet construction continued.
The petition also alleges environmental damage to the Ennore backwaters, including destruction of a fishing area during construction of the project's conveyance system. The matter is posted for hearing on August 10.

National Green Tribunal orders fire safety audit of hazardous waste plants in Tamil Nadu

The NGT directed the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, with the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services, to conduct a comprehensive fire safety audit of all industrial waste storage and treatment facilities in the State.
The direction came in a suo motu case over a fire on May 19, 2024 at a Common Hazardous Waste Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facility in the SIPCOT Industrial Complex, Gummidipoondi.
The Tribunal said the storage of nearly 60 metric tonnes of combustible polymeric scrap required stronger safeguards, including limiting storage quantities, segregation, continuous surveillance and adequate firefighting infrastructure.

National CAMPA clears conservation projects and a sacred groves scheme

The governing body of the National Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA), at its seventh meeting in Coimbatore, approved four new conservation projects.
The projects cover river dolphins, Project Snow Leopard Phase-II (with a second cycle of population estimation), a conservation action plan for the Indian Rhinoceros, and a pan-India approach for the wild water buffalo.
It also approved the Aastha Van Sanrakshan Yojana, a new scheme with an initial corpus of Rs 3,000 crore over five years (2026-27 to 2030-31) for the conservation and restoration of nearly 15,000 sacred groves across the country.
A dedicated geospatial monitoring and evaluation system (GIS Lab) using satellite imagery and field verification was also reviewed for transparent monitoring of compensatory afforestation.

Wayanad debris slip death toll rises to seven

One more body was recovered from the Kalladi debris slip site in Wayanad, Kerala, taking the death toll to seven. The deceased was Rakesh Guchait, 24, a surveyor from East Midnapore, West Bengal.
The body was found downstream of the Meenakshi river, almost 2.5 km from the disaster site.
The slip occurred near the entrance of the under-construction Wayanad tunnel road. Project manager Bikram Singh Rana from Himachal Pradesh remains missing.

Chennai Port to Maduravoyal elevated corridor to be completed by March 2029

The Chennai Port to Maduravoyal double-decker elevated corridor, costing Rs 5,600 crore, will be completed by March 2029, said the National Highways Authority of India regional officer.
22% of the work is complete. 15.5 km of the corridor runs above the Cooum river. Work is suspended in the rainy months from September to January.
A Rs 3,186 crore detailed project report is being prepared for the Puducherry to Cuddalore highway expansion, and Rs 147 crore has been set aside for the Tindivanam to Puducherry national highway.

Fourteen Indian cities among the most at risk from extreme heat

A new study analysing 205 cities worldwide with populations above 10 lakh scored temperature, humidity, green infrastructure, population density and disease and mortality risk.
Al-Basra (Iraq) ranks first and Ahmedabad second on the risk list.
Fourteen Indian cities are among the 50 most at-risk, including Chennai and Madurai from Tamil Nadu, along with Nagpur, Pune, Bengaluru, Kanpur, Lucknow and Jaipur.
About 95% of the worst-affected cities lie in the tropics, in countries such as India, Pakistan, Nigeria and Ghana.

Weather: cloud cover eases heat over Tamil Nadu

A trough off the north Tamil Nadu coast brought increased cloud cover and relief from soaring temperatures. Dry weather may return to most parts of the State from Sunday and last till July 16.
In the 24 hours ending Friday morning, Coonoor in the Nilgiris recorded the highest rainfall of 6 cm, followed by Ambattur in Chennai and Echanviduthi in Thanjavur with 5 cm each.
Chennai's Nungambakkam recorded 34.3 degrees Celsius. Districts along the Western Ghats may continue to experience a wet spell.

Australia returns 11 rare antiquities belonging to Tamil Nadu

Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan welcomed Australia's return of 11 rare antiquities and idols belonging to Tamil Nadu. The retrieval followed bilateral talks during Prime Minister Modi's Australia visit.
Among them are a Bhadrakali Devi Amman panchaloha idol, a Nandi idol and a Karthikeya sculpture, traced to the Sri Kasi Visvanathaswamy temple at Kollumangudi (11th to 12th century).
Also returned is a 12th-century granite sculpture from the Naganathaswamy temple at Manappadi village, Thanjavur district, built during the reign of Rajendra Chola I.
More than 600 antiquities have been brought back to India since 2014. The Tamil Nadu Police Idol Wing worked on the case.

Vande Mataram 150th year concluding function held in Shimla

Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan spoke at the concluding function of the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram and an international seminar in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh.
He said the song turned love for the motherland into a national duty, and named V.O. Chidambaram Pillai, Tiruppur Kumaran, Vanchinathan and Mahakavi Subramania Bharathi among those it inspired.
The theme was 'One Nation, One Constitution'. The event also marked the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who unified the princely states.

Kashi Tamil Sangamam 4.0 prize distribution at Raj Bhavan, Chennai

The Governor presided over the prize distribution for winners of competitions held during Kashi Tamil Sangamam 4.0 at Raj Bhavan, Chennai.
He said unity can be expressed through languages, suggesting that South Indians learn one North Indian language and North Indians a South Indian language, and noted that Adi Shankaracharya built that bridge.
Over 7,000 participants from Tamil Nadu have travelled to Kashi under the scheme so far. IIT Madras Director V. Kamakoti and Dr. Sudha Seshayyan of the Central Institute of Classical Tamil were present.

Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation announces Aadi month temple tours

The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) announced special Aadi-month tours to Amman temples from the 17th.
A five-day tour covering 108 major Amman temples in Tamil Nadu costs Rs 11,250. A three-day Rameswaram tour for Aadi Amavasai costs Rs 6,500.
City circuits are priced from Rs 800 to Rs 1,400, covering Chennai, Madurai, Trichy and Thanjavur groups of temples. Bookings are through www.ttdconline.com.

France beat Morocco 2-0, first team into the FIFA World Cup semi-finals

Defending champions France beat Morocco 2-0 in the quarter-final at Boston to become the first team to reach the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The scorers were Kylian Mbappe in the 60th minute and Ousmane Dembele in the 66th. Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou had earlier saved a penalty from Mbappe.
France have now reached the World Cup semi-finals three times in a row (2018, 2022 and 2026). Morocco had also lost 0-2 to France in the 2022 semi-final.
Portugal named Jorge Jesus as its new head coach, replacing Roberto Martinez after the team's round-of-16 exit. Argentina will meet Switzerland in Kansas City, and Norway, powered by Erling Haaland (seven goals), will face England in Miami.

Wimbledon: Sinner and Zverev in the men's final, all-Czech women's final

World No. 1 and defending champion Jannik Sinner (Italy) beat seven-time winner Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, striking 16 aces and winning 88% of first-serve points.
Second seed Alexander Zverev (Germany) ousted British wildcard Arthur Fery 7-6(0), 6-2, 6-4 to enter his first Wimbledon final.
The women's singles final is between two Czech players, Karolina Muchova (10th seed) and Linda Noskova (9th seed). It is the first single-nation women's Grand Slam final since the 2017 US Open.
Four players representing Czechia have won women's Grand Slam singles titles, and all four did so at Wimbledon: Jana Novotna (1998), Petra Kvitova (2011, 2014), Marketa Vondrousova (2023) and Barbora Krejcikova (2024).

First Women's Test at Lord's: India all out for 285

The one-off Test between England Women and India Women at Lord's is the first Women's Test match at the ground, whose history goes back 239 years. Fifty former England women cricketers rang the five-minute bell.
Put in to bat, India were bowled out for 285 in 74.5 overs. Smriti Mandhana made 83 (108 balls, 11 fours, 1 six), Harmanpreet Kaur 58 and Deepti Sharma 57.
Opener Shafali Verma was out for a duck. England's Sophie Ecclestone took 3 wickets. At stumps England were 21 for one, Kranti Gaud dismissing Tammy Beaumont.

India lose the T20I series to England

England beat India by nine wickets in the fourth Twenty20 International at Bristol, taking an unassailable lead in the five-match series.
India made 158 for 7; England chased it down at 159 for 1 in 13.5 overs, with Harry Brook 79 not out and Phil Salt 59 not out.
India have lost two successive bilateral T20I series for the first time in seven years. Captain Shreyas Iyer called it "a transition phase". The BCCI will hold a performance review at the end of July.

Boxing	At the Asian Under-19 and Under-23 boxing championships in Jakarta, six Indian men reached the Under-23 semi-finals and assured medals: Vishvanath Suresh (50kg), Ganga (55kg), Vanshaj (65kg) and Hitesh (70kg) among them.
Table tennis	In Ultimate Table Tennis at Panaji, Dabang Delhi beat UP Prometheans 9-6, with G. Sathiyan winning both his matches. Kolkata ThunderBlades edged PBG Pune Jaguars 8-7.
Cricket (Big Bash League)	The M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, will host the opening match of the 2026-27 Big Bash League on December 12, the first BBL fixture to be staged in India. Melbourne Renegades will play Perth Scorchers.
Cycling	Belgian Tim Merlier won the seventh stage of the Tour de France, a 175 km run from Hagetmau to Bordeaux. Tadej Pogacar retained the yellow jersey.

Obituaries: former Tamil Nadu DGP V. Vaikunth and filmmaker R. Chezhiyan

Former Director General of Police V. Vaikunth died in Chennai at 89. In a career spanning over 35 years, he served as the DGP of Tamil Nadu in 1995 and received the President's Police Medal for meritorious and distinguished service.
He wrote the book 'An Eye to Indian Policing: Challenge and Response' (published in English and Tamil) and, after retirement, worked on rehabilitation programmes for women prisoners and juvenile delinquents.
Award-winning filmmaker and cinematographer R. Chezhiyan died at 57. A native of Nattarasankottai in Sivaganga district, he was an engineer by training and began his career under cinematographer P.C. Sriram.
He shot Thenmerku Paruvakaatru, Paradesi and Joker, and directed 'To Let', which won the Best Film award in the Indian Language Competition section at the 23rd Kolkata International Film Festival.

Madras High Court halts by-elections in five Assembly constituencies

Madras High Court restrained the Election Commission from notifying by-elections to the Tiruchi East, Perundurai, Ambasamudram, Viralimalai and Karur Assembly constituencies until July 31.
The interim order was passed by Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and Justice G. Arul Murugan on a public interest litigation filed by K. Venkatachalapathy of Tirunelveli.
The petitioner argued that the vacancies caused by the resignation of five legislators cannot be treated as a 'clear vacancy' under Section 151A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, as election petitions challenging their victories are still pending.
Conducting by-elections before the disposal of the election petitions could lead to an anomalous situation of a constituency being represented by two individuals. Respondents were given time till July 31 to file counter-affidavits.

Parliamentary panel: suspend, not remove, high functionaries after 30 days in jail

The Joint Parliamentary Committee examining the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill has recommended replacing the automatic 'removal' of a Prime Minister, Chief Minister or Minister after 30 consecutive days in judicial custody with 'suspension'.
The panel is headed by BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi. Most Opposition parties boycotted it, calling the Bill's intent malicious.
Five recommendations were made: define 'serious criminal offences' as those punishable with five years or more; an automatic reversal clause so suspension lapses on discharge or acquittal; fast-track courts for such cases; and a separate schedule of offences.
An overwhelming majority of stakeholders found the arrest-based trigger constitutionally problematic, as arrest is an executive act and not a judicial determination of guilt. Bodies such as NALSAR and the Association for Democratic Reforms proposed shifting the trigger to the framing of charges by a court.

IITs and IIMs push back against Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhishthan Bill

Institutes of National Importance, including IITs and IIMs, have sought exemption from many provisions of the Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhishthan (VBSA) Bill, 2025, citing the need to protect institutional autonomy.
The Bill proposes to repeal the Acts governing the University Grants Commission, the All India Council for Technical Education and the National Council for Teacher Education, replacing them with a single apex body with regulatory, accreditation and standards councils under it.
The Bill introduces a graded penalty system with fines up to Rs 75 lakh and possible closure of an institution. IIT Bombay questioned the logic of leaving law and medicine out of the Bill's scope.
The NDA-ruled States of Andhra Pradesh, Meghalaya and Madhya Pradesh have objected to the centralising provisions. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh urged NDA States to submit dissent notes.

NIA chargesheets six separatist leaders in 1996 Srinagar mob violence case

The National Investigation Agency filed a chargesheet against six senior separatist Hurriyat Conference leaders over mob violence and indiscriminate firing on police personnel in Srinagar on July 17, 1996.
Those named are Shabir Ahmad Shah, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Abdul Ganie Lone, Javid Ahmad Mir, Shakeel Ahmad Bakshi and Mohammad Yaqoob Wakeel. Three of them died during the proceedings.
They were charged under the Ranbir Penal Code for criminal conspiracy, attempt to murder, rioting and assault on public servants, along with Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.
The violence occurred during the funeral procession of terrorist Hilal Ahmad Beigh at Naaz Crossing, Srinagar, where the accused allegedly raised secessionist slogans and made inflammatory speeches.

Catholic Bishops' Conference flags concerns over FCRA Amendment Bill

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) submitted a memorandum against the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026 to Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The FCRA Amendment Rules, 2026, notified on June 22, permit 16 categories of religious activities but specifically bar 'proselytisation'. The CBCI wants the term omitted as it is undefined and open to misuse.
The Bill provides for a 'designated authority' with the powers of a civil court to take over, manage or dispose of assets created from foreign funds when an NGO's registration is suspended or cancelled.
The Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha on March 25 but its discussion and passage were deferred after an Opposition uproar.

Supreme Court pulls up Maharashtra over delays in criminal trials

The Supreme Court said it was 'disturbing' that Maharashtra routinely opposes bail applications 'tooth and nail' but fails to ensure that criminal trials are conducted without undue delay.
A Bench of Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Sheel Nagu was hearing the appeal of a foreign national who had been in custody for over four years, during which only 2 of the 45 prosecution witnesses had been examined.
The court directed the State to file an affidavit setting out a specific policy or mechanism to address such delays. The matter was posted to July 24.
A day earlier, the court had imposed costs of Rs 50,000 on the Superintendent of Police, Amritsar, over trial delay in a Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act case in Punjab.

Union Home Ministry sets order of songs at government functions

A Union Home Ministry circular to States and Union Territories says that at government functions the State song may be sung first, followed by the national song (Vande Mataram), and the national anthem must come at the end.
Both the national anthem and the national song must be rendered with the correct tune and the correct words.

West Bengal Police freeze 12 more Trinamool Congress accounts

The West Bengal Police froze 12 more bank accounts of the Trinamool Congress holding over Rs 1,000 crore, following complaints of illegal diversion of funds.
Earlier, the police and then the Enforcement Directorate had frozen three party accounts with Rs 440 crore. The ED acted under Section 17(1-A) of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
The Calcutta High Court has allowed the party to operate the three accounts for day-to-day administrative purposes under the oversight of a special judicial officer, retired Justice Subrata Talukdar.

Prime Minister Modi in New Zealand, first such visit in 40 years

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in New Zealand on the final leg of a three-nation tour. It is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to New Zealand in four decades.
He was received at Auckland airport by New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. Talks will cover trade, defence, sports, culture, education and people-to-people exchanges.
In Australia, a highlight of the summit with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was an agreement on civil nuclear energy to facilitate the commercial supply of uranium from Australia to India, sealed after over two years of negotiations.
Before Australia, Mr. Modi was in Indonesia, where 14 agreements were signed covering critical minerals, maritime security and other sectors.

Sheikh Hasina plans to return to Bangladesh around December

Ousted Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who faces a death sentence at home and whose party is banned, said she and senior Awami League colleagues plan to return from exile in India around December and surrender before the court.
"They may arrest me, they may even kill me. Still, I have to go. If death comes, I want it to come on my own soil," she said in a telephone interview.
She is the South Asian nation's longest-serving leader. She fled to India in 2024 after her government fell amid student and public protests, in which a United Nations report said about 1,400 people died.

European Union warns Meta over 'addictive design' on Facebook and Instagram

The European Union warned that Meta must change the 'addictive design' of Facebook and Instagram or face a heavy fine, saying the platforms failed to limit risks to users, especially children and vulnerable adults.
Features of particular concern are endless scroll, highly personalised feeds and the automatic playback of videos. EU tech chief Henna Virkkunen said protecting the physical and mental health of Europeans must be a priority.
Suggested changes include disabling autoplay and infinite scroll by default, effective 'screen time breaks', and making the recommender system less engagement-oriented.
If the regulator's preliminary view is confirmed, the EU can impose a fine of up to 6% of Meta's total worldwide annual turnover.

Ukrainian drones strike southern Russian refineries and Azov Sea port

Ukrainian drone strikes hit southern Russian oil refineries and the port of Taganrog on the Azov Sea, where authorities declared an emergency and evacuated some residents.
Russia's Defence Ministry said its forces downed over 370 Ukrainian drones, including over the Moscow region. Drones also caused a fire at the Ilsky oil refinery in the Krasnodar region.
Ukraine has targeted energy infrastructure to hinder Moscow's financial capabilities, causing a nationwide fuel shortage in Russia. President Vladimir Putin has acknowledged the shortage.
Ukraine's commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrsky said a turning point in the war was 'still a long way off', though Russian assaults had dropped by half.

Unclaimed air strikes hit Iran after United States attacks end

A series of mysterious, unclaimed air strikes hit areas across southern Iran just as the country prepared to bury the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Iran's theocracy has not directly blamed anyone, though a former Revolutionary Guard commander, Esmail Kousari, warned that the United Arab Emirates would "pay the price for its cooperation with the United States".
United States President Donald Trump said the United States has agreed to continue negotiations with Iran but that the ceasefire is over. The war began on February 28.

He is expected to be appointed Labour leader by the end of next week and Prime Minister on July 20. He returned to Westminster by winning a by-election in Makerfield on June 18.

Centre defends E20 fuel, admits fuel economy may fall by 3% to 5%

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, in an FAQ document, admitted that E20-blended fuel could result in a 3% to 5% reduction in fuel economy in some vehicles.
It said mileage is only one parameter, and that E20 offers a higher-octane rating, superior anti-knock characteristics, faster combustion, better pickup and cleaner engine operation, and reduces lifecycle carbon emissions by around 40%.
E20 is not cheaper than pure petrol because the government pays farmers remunerative prices. Maize-based ethanol is procured at about Rs 71.86 per litre, so when crude oil trades around $70 a barrel, E20 costs more to produce than pure petrol.
The price advantage of ethanol appears when crude oil reaches $120 to $130 a barrel. The blending journey spans two decades, from pilot projects in 2001 and policy notification in 2013 to phased increases in blending levels.

Equity mutual fund inflows surge 26.5% in June

Equity-oriented mutual fund schemes attracted Rs 28,973 crore in June, a surge of 26.5% over the previous month, according to data from the Association of Mutual Funds of India (AMFI).
The number of outstanding systematic investment plan (SIP) accounts rose to 10.5 crore for the first time. SIP contributions were Rs 31,781 crore in June.
Mid-cap funds attracted the highest inflows at Rs 6,090 crore, followed by small-cap funds at Rs 5,602 crore and flexi-cap funds at Rs 5,231 crore.
Gold Exchange Traded Funds recorded a net inflow of Rs 3,443 crore in June, against a net outflow of Rs 725 crore in May.

India lays out tariffs and quotas for United Kingdom vehicles under trade deal

The India-United Kingdom Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) will come into force on July 15.
As per the Directorate General of Foreign Trade notification, 20,000 completely built units of petrol and diesel passenger vehicles may be imported from the United Kingdom at concessional rates of 30% to 50%, against the normal import duty of 66% to 110%.
The quota will increase to 37,000 cars by year five, when the concessional tariff will settle at 10%. Thereafter the quota gradually decreases, settling at 15,000 passenger vehicles in year 15.
For electric, hybrid and hydrogen-based passenger vehicles the gradations are based on cost, and the concessions kick in only from year six, giving domestic manufacturers a buffer.

World Bank sanctions Rs 8,482 crore for India's rooftop solar programme

The World Bank will lend Rs 8,482 crore ($890 million) at a concessional rate to support India's rooftop solar programme.
The break-up is Rs 7,817 crore from the IBRD and Rs 572 crore from the Clean Technology Fund, along with a Global Environment Facility grant of Rs 95 crore.
It is expected to catalyse about Rs 40,045 crore of private investment. Rooftop solar is planned for 1 crore homes.
India targets a 50% non-fossil share in power generation by 2035 and net-zero by 2070. The programme should avoid about 17 lakh tonnes of carbon emissions a year.

Higher education: women now 49.7% of all students, says AISHE data

The All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) data for 2023-24 show that female enrolment rose 42% in a decade, from 1.57 crore in 2014-15 to 2.24 crore.
Women now account for 49.7% of all students, with a Gender Parity Index of 1.08. Total higher education enrolment is a record 4.5 crore.
Female enrolment among Scheduled Castes rose 51.4% and among Scheduled Tribes 75.7%. Women make up 44% of STEM students but only 31.1% in engineering and technology.
There are only 82 female teachers for every 100 male teachers. Average monthly earnings are Rs 24,217 for men against Rs 18,353 for women, as per the 2025 Periodic Labour Force Survey.

Chief Minister hands over 31 appointment orders to Karur stampede victims' families

Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, in his first visit to Karur after the stampede, handed over appointment orders to 31 family members of the victims on compassionate grounds at the District Collectorate.
The stampede at Velusamypuram during a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam rally on September 27, 2025 claimed 41 lives. They were appointed junior assistants in departments including Revenue, Rural Development, School Education, Police, Registration and Town Panchayats.
The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court permitted the event but held that the employment offer would be on a temporary basis, subject to judicial review. A Division Bench of Justices C.V. Karthikeyan and R. Sakthivel posted the matter to July 21.
The court directed the State to file a report on the guidelines for grant of jobs on compassionate grounds. The Chief Minister also announced that a memorial will be built for the victims.

Parandur airport project on hold, villages await clarity

The proposed Rs 27,400 crore greenfield airport at Parandur, planned as Chennai's second airport, has been put on hold, though no official announcement or Government Order has been issued.
The project involved acquiring more than 5,300 acres from over 13 villages. Ekanapuram, the village at the centre of a farmers' movement since 2022, was to fall within both runways.
Nearly 1,700 acres have already been acquired from villages including Nelvoy, Nagapattu, Thandalam, Podavur, Valathur and Akkamapuram. As per TIDCO, 26.54% of the project area is wetland.
Of 11 sites examined, four were shortlisted: Thiruporur, Padalam, Pannur and Parandur. The Airports Authority of India said an airport could be built either at Pannur or Parandur; Parandur was chosen as fewer families had to be relocated.

Headmistress suspended for screening Chief Minister's event in a Karur school

The School Education Department suspended the Headmistress of the Panchayat Union Middle School (Girls) at Krishnarayapuram, Karur, for the live screening of the Chief Minister's Karur visit on the school premises with students in attendance.
She was suspended under sub-rule (e) of Rule 17 of the Tamil Nadu Civil Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules. School Education Minister Rajmohan said "there is no place for politics in educational institutions".
A departmental order issued on July 9 bars birthday parties and non-governmental events in schools and prohibits political parties or private organisations from meeting students directly.
The order followed a backlash over a video of an inspection by Industries Minister S. Keerthana at a school in Sivakasi on July 2.

The population census field work in Tamil Nadu begins on July 17 and runs to August 31.
The State government has banned transfers of officials and employees engaged in census work from July 10 to August 31.
The census has two phases: house-listing in July and August 2026, and population enumeration from February 1 to March 31, 2027.
In Greater Chennai Corporation, zone-wise training has begun for 10,500 enumerators and 1,700 supervisors, with 210 trainers appointed.

Government appoints 304 special officers to fix deficiencies in hospitals

The Tamil Nadu government ordered the appointment of 304 special officers to fix deficiencies in all government hospitals, monitoring shortages of medicines and equipment and complaints of bribery.
The circular from the Public Health and Family Welfare Department covers three directorates: Medical Education and Research, Medical and Rural Health Services, and Public Health and Preventive Medicine.
Deficiencies cited include the Omandurar Government Multi-Speciality Hospital, which has only 4 cardiology doctors for over 500 heart patients daily, and Kilpauk Government Medical College Hospital, which manages only 3 to 4 MRI scans a day for want of equipment.
All district collectors must inspect hospitals in their limits and file detailed reports with before and after photographs.

Singappen Special Strike Force acts on 371 complaints in seven days

The 'Singappen' Special Strike Force for women's safety, launched on June 9 and headed by Inspector General K. Bhavaneeswari, acted on 371 complaints between July 3 and July 9.
9,507 spots across Tamil Nadu considered crime-prone for women are under its surveillance. 25 cases were registered in that week.
Seven missing women and six children were rescued and returned to their families, one child marriage was prevented, and 57 school dropouts were re-enrolled.

Southern States to set up a permanent anti-drug coordination mechanism

A permanent inter-State coordination mechanism involving the police forces of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, along with Puducherry, will be established to strengthen anti-drug surveillance.
Each State and central agencies including the Narcotics Control Bureau, Customs and Intelligence Bureau will appoint a senior nodal officer for continuous intelligence-sharing and joint operations.
The decision was announced by Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala after a high-level meeting held as part of Kerala's anti-drugs campaign, Operation Toofan, in Thiruvananthapuram.
Drug traffickers were using new methods such as dropping narcotics from moving trains before they reached stations to avoid detection.

Narikuravar siblings become first from their community to enter CIPET

G. Parthima, 20, and her brother G. Santhosh, 17, of Chinnaiyanchatram village in Kancheepuram district, have become the first from the Narikuravar tribal community to secure admission to the Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering and Technology (CIPET).
The Social Justice Department identified the siblings during an outreach drive and admitted them to the Eklavya Model Residential School at Kumili in Chengalpattu district, where they completed Class XII.
They underwent JEE Main coaching at Mallur in Salem and JEE Advanced coaching in Cuddalore under a Social Justice Department programme, cleared the examination and secured admission to CIPET, Bhubaneswar.
Parthima will join manufacturing engineering and Santhosh plastic engineering. The State government will bear their education, accommodation and travel expenses.
