ISRO completes three key Gaganyaan crew module tests

  • ISRO announced on 12 July 2026 that it had successfully carried out three major tests of the Gaganyaan crew module systems.
  • The first was the Crew Module Uprighting System (CMUS), a stored cold gas based system that keeps the crew module upright after splashdown in the sea. Inflation tests of the primary inflation module were done using a high pressure gas bottle and control valves.
  • The second demonstrated separation of the umbilical mechanism linking the crew module, where the astronauts live, and the service module, which supplies power and propulsion. It has two parts, CSU-1 on the crew module side and CSU-2 on the service module side.
  • The third was apex cover separation. The apex cover protects the parachutes and is jettisoned before the parachutes deploy; the test validated the structural integrity of the crew module during the event.

Chandrayaan-3 completes three years since launch

  • Chandrayaan-3 was launched on 14 July 2023 by an LVM-3 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota. 14 July 2026 marks the third anniversary of the launch.
  • The Vikram lander soft landed near the Moon's south pole on 23 August 2023, making India the fourth country to soft land on the Moon and the first country ever to land near the lunar south pole.
  • The Pragyan rover confirmed the presence of sulphur on the lunar surface and detected aluminium, calcium, iron and silicon. Vikram measured surface temperature, studied moonquakes and collected soil and plasma data.
  • Chandrayaan-1 found water molecules on the Moon; Chandrayaan-2 (2019) lost contact with its lander in the final moments. The Chandrayaan project was announced by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on India's 56th Independence Day in 2003. ISRO was founded in 1962.
  • Follow on programmes include Gaganyaan (human spaceflight), Chandrayaan-4 (lunar sample return), Shukrayaan (Venus), Aditya L-1 (Sun) and Samudrayaan (deep sea human mission).

Drone transport cuts tuberculosis diagnosis cost from Rs.9,451 to Rs.91

  • A study by AIIMS Bibinagar, Telangana, under the Indian Council of Medical Research's i-DRONE initiative, found that carrying sputum samples by drone cut a suspected tuberculosis patient's average out of pocket expenditure from Rs.9,451 to about Rs.91.
  • Diagnosis time fell from 15 days to five days. The study, published in the International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, analysed data from 840 participants in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district.
  • Earlier, patients travelled 10 km to 30 km over poor roads to reach diagnostic centres and over 92% waited more than two days for results. During the drone phase 76.3% got results the next day. Patients now visit only the nearest primary health centre or subcentre.

Alcohol containing medicines moved from Schedule K to Schedule H1

  • Medicines with a high content of alcohol in the ethyl form can no longer be sold without a prescription from a registered doctor. The amended rules were notified in the Gazette by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation.
  • Medicines containing 12% alcohol, so far sold with relaxations under Schedule K, have been brought under the Schedule H1 category. All orally consumed medicines are covered, and pharmacies must compulsorily maintain records of such sales.
  • The trigger was the misuse of cough and cold medicines as an intoxicant, since alcohol is used in them as a solvent and some manufacturers used a higher alcohol content.

Helium: China bans exports, spotlight on a non-renewable gas

  • On 10 July 2026, China temporarily but immediately banned helium exports. China imports more than 80% of its helium needs and produces only about 1.6% of world helium.
  • Helium is the second lightest element, non-renewable, and is formed deep in the earth's crust by the radioactive decay of uranium and thorium. It is co-extracted with natural gas and processed only when helium is at least 0.3% by volume; commercial purity is at least 99.997%. Its boiling point is minus 269 degrees Celsius.
  • Major producers are the United States (43% of total supply), Qatar, Russia, Canada and Algeria. Uses, by share of demand: laboratory 22%, controlled atmospheres and semiconductors 17%, lifting gas 17%, MRI scanners 15%, aerospace 9%, leak detection 5%. ISRO, NASA and SpaceX use helium to pressurise rocket fuel tanks.

Incision free ultrasound treatment for Parkinson's disease discussed in Chennai

  • At the NeuroNext Forum organised by the Vattikutti Foundation in Chennai on 12 July 2026, experts said Magnetic Resonance guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS), a treatment approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration, remains largely inaccessible in India.
  • MRgFUS involves no surgical incision, no stitches and no drilling into the skull, making it especially useful for older adults. It mainly reduces tremors and suits patients with Parkinson's disease or Essential Tremor whose symptoms are not controlled by medication.
  • It is performed on only one side of the brain to treat symptoms on the opposite side of the body; the other side may be treated after six to nine months.

United States clears the first commercial orbital sunlight mirror, Earendil-1

  • On 9 July 2026 the United States Federal Communications Commission authorised the company Reflect Orbital to launch and operate a test satellite, Earendil-1, carrying a deployable thin film reflector.
  • The motorised mirror will reflect sunlight to specific spots on earth at night, to extend usable hours for solar panels and to light emergency operations. Orbit: altitude about 625 km, inclination 88 degrees. The licence is for two years.
  • The American Astronomical Society objected, citing background skyglow and disruption to optical astronomy. Orbital mirrors are not new: Russia flew the Znamya-2 space mirror experiments in the 1990s.

Manjolai tea estate land handed over in full to the Forest Department

  • The entire tea estate land at Manjolai, held on lease by the Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation (BBTC), has been handed over to the Tamil Nadu Forest Department on the orders of the Supreme Court.
  • 8,373.57 acres of Singampatti zamin land in the Western Ghats, Tirunelveli district, was leased to BBTC in 1929. Tea estates were run at Manjolai, Kakkachi, Nalumukku and Oothu.
  • 8,152.13 acres were handed to the Forest Department in May 2025. By a Supreme Court judgment of 29 May, the Ambasamudram sub-collector and the District Forest Officer were directed to take over the remaining 221.44 acres within 15 days.
  • On 11 July, the remaining 221.44 acres, comprising staff quarters and industrial buildings, were handed over in the presence of Ambasamudram sub-collector L.C.S. Srikanth. The full 8,373.57 acres are now under Forest Department control.

Twelve places in Tamil Nadu cross 100 degrees Fahrenheit; rain likely in Western Ghats districts

  • The Chennai Meteorological Centre said moderate rain is likely at one or two places in the Western Ghats districts on 13 July, and light to moderate rain from 13 to 18 July, caused by variation in the speed of the westerly winds.
  • Temperatures of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or more were recorded at 12 places. The highest was Madurai airport at 105.8 F, followed by Vellore 105.62, Madurai city 104.36, Tiruttani 103.64 and Chennai Meenambakkam 102.56.
  • The highest rainfall was 20 mm at Chinnakallar in Coimbatore district. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal will otherwise have generally dry weather.

Cloudbursts trigger flash floods in Pahalgam

  • Cloudbursts triggered flash floods in Pahalgam in the 24 hours to 12 July 2026. Four hotels and several houses were damaged when the Awoora stream swept away vehicles, and the Bijbehara to Pahalgam road was cut off.
  • Activists flagged rampant construction in violation of environmental norms, hotels encroaching on flood channels and forest land, and shrinking green cover in the ecologically fragile area.

Active fault line found under the world's largest hydropower project on the Brahmaputra

  • A study by Chinese geologists found that an active fault line, the Paizhen Fault, lies in the reservoir area of the Yarlung Tsangpo hydropower station being built on the Brahmaputra in Tibet, and could affect its structural stability. The fault is said to have been active for about 9,500 years.
  • The project site is about 50 km from the Arunachal Pradesh border, near the U bend of the Brahmaputra, before the river enters India. It aims to generate 300 billion kilowatt hours of power a year.
  • The Tibetan plateau, called the roof of the world, is a frequent earthquake zone because of the tectonic plates beneath it.

Ethanol blending: the case for moving beyond sugarcane

  • The government continues producing E20 petrol at a cost higher than pure petrol when crude falls below $70 a barrel, in order to compensate farmers adequately.
  • Most feedstock for the fuel blending programme is sugarcane, one of India's most water and fertilizer intensive crops, grown mainly in water stressed Maharashtra and Karnataka.
  • Alternatives suggested: maize and millets need less water; sweet sorghum is less water intensive with a shorter growing season; and lignocellulosic biomass such as rice and wheat straw, maize stover and groundnut shells can support second generation (2G) ethanol, which avoids using cropland for fuel and addresses stubble burning.

Union Agriculture Minister calls for a people's movement for tree planting

  • Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, speaking at a Vriksha Mitra dialogue at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute campus in Delhi, called for tree planting across the country to be taken forward as a people's movement.
  • He said Vriksha Mitra Parivar groups should be formed at district, block and village level, that village panchayats and urban local bodies must set apart separate land for tree planting, and that families should mark birthdays and anniversaries by planting a tree.

Nearly 95 trees transplanted to a Chennai lake bed fail to survive

  • Nearly 95 trees, most of them mature adults, were relocated to Raman Thangal Lake in Sholinganallur by the Highways Department between March and May 2025, to allow widening of the East Coast Road between Akkarai and Thiruvanmiyur.
  • Over a year later most have failed to survive. T.D. Babu of the environmental organisation Nizhal said transplanted trees need growth promoters, anti fungal treatment, organic manure and regular watering through one full summer.
  • Environmentalists want the District Green Committee to periodically review tree transplantation projects, monitor survival rates and fix accountability on agencies when trees die from poor aftercare.

Chennai Corporation warns of fine for not segregating waste

  • The Greater Chennai Corporation has warned that action, including a fine, will be taken against those who do not hand over garbage after segregating it at the point of generation.
  • The colour code: biodegradable waste in the green bin, non biodegradable waste in the blue bin, sanitary waste in the red bin, and household hazardous waste such as batteries and bulbs in the black bin.

Air quality snapshot: Greater Noida worst, Aizawl cleanest

  • Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh recorded the country's worst overall Air Quality Index of 335 (unhealthy) on 12 July, while Aizawl, Mizoram recorded a healthy AQI of 15.
  • Chennai's air was rated Poor, with PM2.5 at 170 and PM10 at 196. Delhi recorded PM2.5 201 and PM10 449.

Wayanad landslide: mining and tunnelling firm ordered to pay compensation

  • Tunnel work between Anakkampoyil and Meppadi, to connect Wayanad and Kozhikode districts, was under way at Kallady when a landslide near the site killed eight people.
  • The State government will pay Rs.5 lakh to the family of each person killed and Rs.2 lakh to each injured person's family, and has also ordered the tunnelling company to pay compensation. A committee formed to inquire into the landslide will visit the district shortly.

Ayodhya: the legal and constitutional milestones recalled

  • In 1986, the locks of the disputed structure were ordered opened, allowing Hindu devotees access. The same year the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Divorce) Act was enacted, diluting the Supreme Court's Shah Bano alimony order.
  • The shilanyas was permitted adjacent to the disputed structure in November 1989. The Babri Masjid was demolished on 6 December 1992, after which four State governments were dismissed.
  • The Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991 remains the framework governing all other religious sites. The Supreme Court's unanimous verdict of November 2019 allowed construction of the Ram Temple, and the pran pratishtha was held on 22 January 2024.
  • The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust has set up a three member panel to screen candidates for the temple's first ever Chief Executive Officer. Trust Construction Committee Chairman Nripendra Misra said the CEO's powers will be decided by the Trust.

Vice-President unveils Mannathu Padmanabhan statue in New Delhi

  • Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan unveiled a statue and memorial hall of Mannathu Padmanabhan in New Delhi, describing the freedom fighter and social reformer as one who dedicated his life to uplifting society. Mannathu Padmanabhan lived from 2 January 1878 to 25 February 1970.
  • He founded the Nair Service Society (NSS). The Vice-President said his plans for social renaissance went beyond caste, aiming that every human being be treated with equality and dignity.
  • He planted a sapling under the Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry's Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam initiative, and praised the Delhi NSS body for protecting traditional arts such as Kalaripayattu, Kathakali and Mohiniyattam.

Poet Vairamuthu felicitated for the Jnanpith Award 2025

  • Poet Vairamuthu, chosen for the Jnanpith Award 2025, was felicitated by the Delhi Tamil Sangam in New Delhi. The award will be presented to him on 13 July.
  • He said the Jnanpith is a bigger honour to him than the Sahitya Akademi award, and that it was given not to him as an individual but to the Tamil people. The chief guest was M. Karpaga Vinayagam, former Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court.

Playback singer S. Janaki cremated with state honours

  • Legendary playback singer S. Janaki, aged 88, who died on 11 July 2026 in Mysuru, was cremated with state honours on 12 July at Kaniyanahundi, H.D. Kote taluk, Mysuru district. Her granddaughter Apsara performed the last rites.
  • Known as the Nightingale of the South, she sang more than 48,000 songs in about 20 Indian languages over a career of about 60 years. Ilaiyaraaja's debut film Annakili began their long association.
  • P. Susheela singled out Singaravelane Deva from the film Konjum Salangai, set in raga Abheri, in which Janaki's voice was blended with the nadaswaram of Karukurichi Arunachalam, as her greatest achievement.

Book in news: former Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi's memoir

  • Former Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi has written a book titled India and I: Hundred Memories, Not a Memoir.
  • It recalls the 2012 episode when the Election Commission held that a Union Minister's campaign speech promising to raise the Muslim quota within the OBC quota from 4.5% to 9% violated the model code of conduct, and barred him from campaigning for four days.

Joint Parliamentary Committee: no permanent removal for a Prime Minister or Chief Minister jailed 30 days

  • The Joint Parliamentary Committee examining the 130th Constitution Amendment Bill has recommended that the Prime Minister, Union Ministers, Chief Ministers and State Ministers arrested on a serious criminal charge and kept in jail continuously for 30 days should be removed only temporarily, until the court case is decided, and not permanently.
  • The Bill as introduced in the Lok Sabha provides that such a person, if arrested and in jail for 30 days without bail and not resigning, is automatically removed from office on the 31st day.
  • The committee has 31 members and is headed by Member of Parliament Aparajita Sarangi. It has defined a serious crime as an offence carrying a punishment of five years' imprisonment or more, and wants a separate schedule listing such offences inserted in the law.
  • It also recommends that, in line with Supreme Court orders, cases against high constitutional office holders be taken up in fast track or special courts. Most opposition members walked out of the committee.

Monsoon Session of Parliament from 20 July; all-party meeting on 19 July

  • The Monsoon Session of Parliament will run from 20 July to 13 August 2026. An all party meeting has been called in New Delhi on 19 July, ahead of the session.
  • The 130th Constitution Amendment Bill and several other important Bills are expected to be taken up.

Supreme Court fixes Rs.30,000 a month as the value of a homemaker's work

  • In a judgment delivered on 11 June 2026, in an appeal in a motor accident claim, the Supreme Court fixed Rs.30,000 a month as the minimum economic value of a homemaker's unpaid domestic work and caregiving, to serve as the basis for compensation.
  • The compensation, earlier fixed at Rs.8.43 lakh by the High Court, was raised to Rs.62.78 lakh. The Court noted that unpaid domestic and caregiving work, mostly done by women, forms about 15% of India's Gross Domestic Product but has never been quantified.
  • A new legal category, Loss of Domestic Care, has been created in the compensation table under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The Rs.30,000 is a floor for Motor Accident Claims Tribunals, with a built in 10% increase every three years for inflation.
  • The Court clarified that the ruling does not legally enforce a monthly salary payable to housewives by their husbands.

More than 5.39 crore cases pending; judicial vacations under debate

  • As of the last day of 2025, more than 5.39 crore cases were pending in Indian courts: over 4.76 crore in district courts, 63.6 lakh in the High Courts and more than 92,000 in the Supreme Court, the top court's heaviest load in over 30 years.
  • A government study calculated that at the present pace, clearing the pile could take three centuries. Roughly three in four prisoners in India are undertrials, and up to a third of High Court seats lie vacant.
  • The Supreme Court's summer break ran from 1 June to 12 July 2026; the Court sits about 190 days a year. In 2024 it renamed the summer vacation as partial court working days without changing the number of sitting days.
  • A parliamentary standing committee in 2023 objected to the entire court going on vacation en masse and proposed staggered leave. Alternatives cited: Lok Adalats settled more than 2.59 crore cases in a single national sitting last December and over 23.5 crore in three years; the Mediation Act, 2023 nudges parties to attempt settlement before going to court.

Central Information Commission orders IIT Madras to disclose use of grant-in-aid

  • The Central Information Commission has directed the Indian Institute of Technology Madras to give a detailed, project wise breakdown of the utilisation of grant-in-aid funds for the financial year 2023-24, sought under the Right to Information Act, 2005.
  • IIT Madras said it received Rs.537 crore for sponsored research projects and Rs.241 crore for industry research projects in the period, and had handled more than 1,000 projects. It argued that project wise details contained third party personal information exempt under Section 8(1)(j) of the Act.
  • Information Commissioner Sudha Rani Relangi held that the request had not been addressed adequately and directed a revised, categorical reply.

Chief Justice of India: judicial infrastructure is a necessity, not a luxury

  • Inaugurating the Tower of Justice, a seven acre judicial complex for the Gurugram District and Sessions Court, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said judicial infrastructure is no longer a luxury but a very big necessity.
  • He called for mandatory facilities for women advocates, including separate Bar rooms and adjoining childcare facilities, in all new court complexes, citing a Supreme Court Bar Association survey which found many judicial complexes lacked basic amenities for women members of the Bar.
  • He said that just as a patient reaching a hospital is given first aid, a consumer of justice coming to court must be given first aid in the form of basic amenities, seating, drinking water and washrooms. The new complex has 55 courtrooms against 45 in the old building.

Special Intensive Revision: Manipur's tribal seats account for 64.2% of deletions

  • Draft rolls for Manipur, released on 5 July 2026, showed that the 19 Assembly constituencies reserved for Scheduled Tribes accounted for 64.2% of the 1.59 lakh deletions, although they held only 37.8% of the 20.93 lakh voters before the revision.
  • In ST constituencies, 76.1% of deletions were recorded as Permanently Shifted or Untraceable, against 53.9% in General constituencies. Death accounted for 41.9% of deletions in General constituencies but only 18.9% in ST constituencies.
  • More than 8% of female voters were deleted against 6% of male voters, pulling the gender ratio in the rolls from 1,071 before the revision to 1,057 in the draft rolls. Deletions were concentrated in and around Churachandpur.
  • In Punjab, more than 30 lakh electors submitted enumeration forms in special camps over two days, Chief Electoral Officer Anindita Mitra said.

New voters must give their parents' Special Intensive Revision details

  • Election officials said new voters seeking inclusion in the electoral roll must submit the Special Intensive Revision details of their parents. Form 6 has been provided for this, and the number of documents a new voter must submit has been reduced.
  • If Form 6 is submitted online, filling in the declaration is sufficient and documents need not be submitted repeatedly. Officials said the aim of the revision is to remove ineligible voters and to include every eligible Indian citizen in the roll.

District Development Councils and local democracy in Jammu and Kashmir

  • The 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendment Acts provide for elected rural and urban bodies with mandatory regular elections. The rural structure is Gram Panchayats, Block Development Councils and Zila Parishads; the urban structure is Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats.
  • Article 243ZD of the Constitution mandates the District Planning Committee to consolidate the plans prepared by panchayats and municipalities into a district level plan, a bottom up mechanism. These committees function unevenly across the country, with a few exceptions such as Kerala.
  • The District Development Councils in Jammu and Kashmir were created by an executive order, not by legislation. Formed in 2021, they completed their five year term on 24 February 2026 and no fresh elections have been held.
  • Critics say the Council bypasses Zila Panchayats and urban local bodies and works as a parallel administrative authority. Representation is skewed: the 280 members are allotted without regard to population, so Srinagar (about 12 lakh people) and Kishtwar (about 2.5 lakh) get the same number of members.

Tamil Nadu urges the Centre to retain 35 kg per household under Antyodaya Anna Yojana

  • Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has written to the Prime Minister urging the Centre to retain the present entitlement of 35 kg of foodgrains per month for every household under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY), irrespective of family size, as practised since the National Food Security Act came into force in 2013.
  • The Centre's proposed amendment seeks to provide 7 kg per person per month, subject to an overall ceiling of 35 kg per household. The Chief Minister said this would diminish the food security of nearly 70 lakh of the State's most vulnerable people and cut the monthly quota from 65,261 tonnes to about 42,040 tonnes.
  • Tamil Nadu has 18,64,600 AAY ration cards covering 69,26,983 beneficiaries. Of these, 15.75 lakh cards have a family size below five, covering 58.51 lakh beneficiaries.
  • Tamil Nadu drew less rice than its AAY allocation in five of the last seven years. Only in 2019-20 and 2025-26 did utilisation exceed the allocation, at close to 108%; in the COVID-19 year 2020-21 off-take was about 98%.
  • Since 1 January 2023 the Union government has charged nothing for rice for AAY and priority household cards, earlier Rs.3 per kg, and free distribution under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana was extended for five years from 1 January 2024.

Tamil Nadu issues a Standard Operating Procedure against unauthorised health-sector institutions

  • The Health Department has issued a Standard Operating Procedure for identifying and acting against unauthorised institutions in the health sector, covering medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, allied healthcare, rehabilitation sciences, Indian Systems of Medicine (ayurveda, siddha, unani), homeopathy, yoga, naturopathy and public health.
  • The Joint Director of Health Services (JDHS) is the district level nodal officer. Every year on 1 April, the Registrar of the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, the Directorate of Medical Education and Research, the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine and the Directorate of Indian Medicine must give the JDHS district-wise lists of approved institutions and courses.
  • On a complaint, the JDHS constitutes an inspection team to verify authorisation, course approvals, admission records, fee collection, infrastructure and clinical training facilities, and reports to the District Collector. After the Collector's approval a complaint is filed with the police, further admissions must be stopped, and closure may be ordered after due legal process.

Tamil Nadu has 708 Urban Health and Wellness Centres

  • A. Somasundaram, Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, said Tamil Nadu has established 708 Urban Health and Wellness Centres to improve access to care, and that the department is ready to take up joint research with educational institutions on preventing non-communicable diseases.
  • He was speaking at a three day state conference on non-communicable diseases at Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research, Porur, organised with the Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine, Tamil Nadu Chapter. Theme: Integrating Public Health and Clinical Care for Control of Non-Communicable Diseases.
  • Over 250 delegates and more than 50 speakers took part. Lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer are now affecting the young and children.

New 100-bed ESIC hospital for Sriperumbudur

  • The Employees' State Insurance Corporation will add seven healthcare facilities across six States, worth about Rs.668 crore, catering to about 53 lakh beneficiaries. Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya will inaugurate them on 14 July 2026.
  • The Tamil Nadu facility is a 100-bed ESIC hospital at Sriperumbudur, which will serve 5.5 lakh insured persons from Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts.

Rs.771 crore spent on Chennai roads in two years, yet potholes persist

  • The Greater Chennai Corporation is divided into 15 zones and 200 wards, and has 35,978 roads within its limits, of which only 488 are main roads carrying bus and public transport; more than 60 of these are State highways.
  • Repairs: 2,118 roads at Rs.282 crore in 2024 and 3,897 roads at Rs.489 crore in 2025, a total of 6,015 roads and Rs.771 crore over two years. Of the 2025-26 works, more than 65% are complete.
  • Engineering standard says a newly laid road should last five to seven years, but in Chennai some new roads are damaged within weeks. Maintenance staff should be 10 workers per ward, but at most only four are working. Residents are urged to report damaged roads on the Namma Saalai app.

Chennai Corporation collects 32.33 tonnes of old goods from 138 houses in a day

  • The Greater Chennai Corporation collected 32.33 metric tonnes of unused old articles from 138 houses on Saturday, 11 July, under a weekly Saturday drive.
  • Conservancy workers visit houses on the basis of information given by the public and collect mattresses, cots, wooden furniture, clothes and household goods. The material is sorted, with recyclable items handled separately, so that they are not dumped on roadsides or in water bodies.

Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation launches a Rs.99 biryani

  • The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) has launched a scheme to supply quality food at a cheap price by serving biryani for Rs.99 at Hotel Tamil Nadu outlets.
  • The scheme was started last week and, following a good response from the public, is being continued.

Namakkal zone egg price raised to Rs.6.65

  • At the National Egg Coordination Committee Namakkal zone consultative meeting, the farm procurement price of an egg was raised by 5 paise to Rs.6.65.
  • At the national coordination committee meeting at Palladam, the price of broiler chicken was fixed at Rs.151 and of the egg laying hen at Rs.110.

School Education Department distributes guide books to physical education and moral conduct teachers

  • The School Education Department has begun distributing guide books to physical education teachers (PET) and to teachers who handle the moral conduct (nanneri natathai) subject in government schools, to give uniform training to students from Class 6 to Class 12. About 4,000 physical education teachers work in Tamil Nadu schools.
  • The moral conduct guide books explain professional ethics, student welfare values, the norms teachers should follow and rules of conduct, and cover emotional well-being. For Classes 1 to 5, new syllabus textbooks were introduced this academic year with a teacher handbook.

Private schools seek a State-level Best Teacher Award

  • The School Voice Association, the association of private schools in Tamil Nadu, has petitioned the School Education Minister to institute Tamil Nadu Best Teacher Awards for teachers of all recognised boards, across all 38 districts.
  • The State has awarded the Dr. Radhakrishnan Best Teacher Award to government school teachers since the 1970s, later extended to Matriculation and Anglo-Indian schools. General secretary M.J. John Arokia Prabhu said over 50% of students in the State now study in private unaided schools.

Marina Beach wooden accessible ramp to be replaced with HDPE

  • The Greater Chennai Corporation will replace the wooden accessible ramp on Marina Beach with a high density polyethylene (HDPE) ramp.
  • The wooden ramp, installed in 2022 to give beach access to persons with disabilities, was built with eco friendly materials in compliance with Coastal Regulation Zone guidelines, but the Brazilian timber pillars embedded beneath the sand rotted.

India's crude oil imports from Russia hit a record in June

  • India imported more than Rs.59,900 crore worth of crude oil, coal and oil products from Russia in June, an all-time high and 34% more than in May, according to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA). China remained the biggest importer at Rs.79,500 crore.
  • Union Commerce Ministry data show receipts of Russian crude in May reached pre-sanction levels of more than 40% of India's imports, the highest in two years. Russian imports carried a premium of $46 per ton; import value surged 83% amid a 2% fall in volume.
  • Until the Russia and Ukraine conflict, nearly 70% of India's crude imports came through long term contracts, particularly from West Asia. Indian companies Reliance, Indian Oil, Nayara and Bharat Petroleum refine Russian crude and export the products.

India's shipbuilding industry holds just 1.2% of the global share

  • Global shipbuilding share: China 47%, South Korea 29%, Japan 17%. India's share is only 1.2%. Ships sailing under the Indian flag are only 0.77% of the world total.
  • Share of world maritime trade: Greece 17.8%, China 12.8%, Japan 10.8%, India only 1.8%. The 2025-26 Budget set aside Rs.25,000 crore to strengthen domestic shipbuilding, with an additional Rs.70,000 crore planned.
  • About 60 large ships are being built in India at an investment of roughly Rs.1.5 lakh crore. The Sagarmala scheme was announced to develop ports, and India's 12 major ports are being modernised.

SEBI allows lifecycle funds with a glide path

  • SEBI has allowed asset management companies to offer lifecycle funds that adopt a glide path, the practice of cutting equity exposure as the target date nears.
  • Under the regulation, a fund with 15 years to the target date may hold 65% to 95% in equity; this must drop to 50% to 65% when the target date is 5 to 10 years away, and to 20% or less when it is less than one year away. The National Pension System already applies a glide path for its auto allocation option.

EPFO announces an Amnesty Scheme, 2026 for exempted Provident Fund Trusts

  • The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation has invited applications from exempted Provident Fund Trusts to regularise their status under the Finance Act, 2026, the Income Tax Act, 2025 and the Code on Social Security.
  • The Amnesty Scheme, 2026 gives a one-time opportunity. Recognition under the Income Tax Act, 2025 will be available only to Provident Funds that have obtained exemption under Section 17 of the Employees' Provident Fund and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952.

India and Canada conclude the third round of trade agreement talks

  • India and Canada concluded the third round of negotiations for the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement in Ottawa on 10 July 2026, covering trade in goods and services, intellectual property, rules of origin, sanitary measures and technical barriers to trade.
  • The two sides aim to raise bilateral trade to $50 billion by 2030. In 2025-26 two-way trade fell 8.22% to $7.95 billion from $8.66 billion in 2024-25.

IITs drop entrance ranks from placement resumes

  • The All IITs Placement Committee has decided to exclude JEE ranks, GATE scores and percentiles from standard placement resumes.
  • The move is consistent with the National Education Policy 2020, which emphasises moving beyond an examination dominated system. It is also argued that median salary, not the highest package, is the better measure of how a graduating cohort has fared.

Tamil Etymological Dictionary Project Directorate in a state of neglect

  • The Senthamizh Sorpirappiyal Agaramudhali Thitta Iyakkam, the Tamil Etymological Dictionary Project Directorate, was set up in 1974 by then Chief Minister Karunanidhi, because Veeramamunivar's Sathuragarathi was hard for ordinary readers. Its aim was a Tamil to Tamil dictionary tracing the roots, grammar and literary usage of Tamil words.
  • The eminent etymologist Devaneya Pavanar was its first Director. After his death his successors published the work in 31 volumes, from 1985 to 2011.
  • The Directorate created the websites Sorkuvai and Solvayal, ran a toll free call centre (14469), produced nine kinds of dictionaries, and a revised master dictionary running to 8,060 pages. Its awards include the Devaneya Pavanar Award and the Veeramamunivar Award, each of Rs.2 lakh and a sovereign of gold, and the Natramizh Paavalar Award of Rs.50,000.
  • Tamil scholars say the Directorate is now near defunct: there has been no full time Director for two years; staff strength is only 20, with editors paid a consolidated Rs.20,000 a month and computer engineers Rs.12,000, with no raise for over 12 years; the call centre is down; no new dictionary compilation is going on; 44 awards due last year have not been given; and the Directorate's 50th year passed without a golden jubilee celebration.
  • Officials of the Tamil Development Department said the schemes are only temporarily paused, the pending awards will be given, the call centre will be repaired, and a Deputy Director level officer has been appointed Director as per rules. The office functions at MRC Nagar, Santhome, Chennai.

The Chola-era stone window at Tiruvalanchuzhi

  • The celebrated stone window, or palakani, stands at the Nurai (white) Pillaiyar shrine within the Sadaimudinathar Temple at Tiruvalanchuzhi, near Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district. It is a masterpiece of the later Chola period.
  • Tradition holds that master craftsmen, while contracting to reproduce any architectural element, specifically excluded three masterpieces: this stone window, the Vavval Nathi Mandapam at the Tiruveezhimizhalai temple, and the Kondungai (sunshade) Mandapam at Avudaiyar Koil.
  • R. Kalaikovan of the Dr. Rajamanickanar Centre for Historical Research said there are about 50 inscriptions referring to the Pillaiyar shrine, the earliest dating to the reign of Kulotunga III; all are found on the walls of the Sadaimudinathar Temple.
  • The window has four stone pillars connected by intricate lattice work crowned with sculptures of yazhis; the two central pillars are each carved from a single block of stone. The extended structures of the shrine, called panjaras, are shaped as miniature shrines, each with a unique lattice pattern and a finely sculpted female figure.

Restoration of the 133-year-old Victoria Memorial School for the Blind

  • The Public Works Department has completed nearly 80% of the work to restore the 133-year-old building of the Victoria Memorial School for the Blind, at a cost of Rs.24.20 crore.
  • Built between 1888 and 1893 in colonial architectural style in red brick, the structure is spread over 58,200 sq ft. It had suffered extensive damage to its Mangalore tiled roof and Madras terrace roof; cracks were repaired with lime plaster.
  • The building was initially occupied by the British military and had a soldiers' rehabilitation centre. In 1931 it was handed over to the Madras Association of the Handicapped, which started the school for visually impaired students. It became a higher secondary school in 1978 and is now under the State Commissionerate for Welfare of the Differently Abled.

Rs.30 crore golden chariot taken in procession at the Ekambaranathar temple, Kanchipuram

  • A golden chariot built at a cost of Rs.30 crore at the Ekambaranathar temple, Kanchipuram, was taken in street procession for the first time. The temple is revered as the earth (nilam) sthala among the Pancha Bhoota sthalams.
  • The chariot is about 25 feet tall, 13 feet long and 10 feet wide, and uses 22 kg 306 grams of gold. It was built and handed over to the temple administration by the Ekambaranathar Iraippani Arakkattalai, a trust; work began on 6 December 2025.
  • The procession was flagged off by Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister C. Ramesh, in the presence of the Kanchi Sankara Mutt peedathipathi Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamigal and District Collector T. Sineka. Along the route there was annadhanam at five places, devotional music by 108 nadaswaram artists, kummi paattu, silambattam and fireworks.

Aadi Pooram valaikappu ceremony at the Nellaiappar temple

  • The valaikappu ceremony for the goddess was held at the Nellaiappar temple, Tirunelveli, as part of the Aadi Pooram festival, followed by maha deeparadhanai. Turmeric, kumkum, the yellow thread and bangles were given as prasadam to the women who took part.
  • At night the goddess went in street procession on the silver rishaba vahanam. The peak event of the 10-day festival, the Aadi Pooram mulaikkattu thiruvizha, will be held on 18 July in the oonjal mandapam.

திருவலஞ்சுழியில் உள்ள சோழர் காலக் கல் ஜன்னல்

133 ஆண்டுகள் பழமையான விக்டோரியா நினைவு பார்வையற்றோர் பள்ளி புதுப்பிப்பு

  • விக்டோரியா நினைவு பார்வையற்றோர் பள்ளியின் 133 ஆண்டுகள் பழமையான கட்டடத்தைப் ரூ.24.20 கோடி செலவில் புதுப்பிக்கும் பணியில் 80% அளவை பொதுப்பணித் துறை நிறைவு செய்துள்ளது.
  • 1888 முதல் 1893 வரை காலனிய கட்டடக்கலை பாணியில் செங்கல்லால் கட்டப்பட்ட இக்கட்டடம் 58,200 சதுர அடி பரப்பில் உள்ளது. அதன் மங்களூர் ஓட்டுக் கூரையும் மெட்ராஸ் மொட்டை மாடிக் கூரையும் பெருமளவு சேதமடைந்திருந்தன; விரிசல்கள் சுண்ணாம்புப் பூச்சால் சரிசெய்யப்பட்டன.
