Flaws in the UMANG portal exposed user data, including Aadhaar numbers

  • Security researchers found multiple vulnerabilities in the UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) portal, which aggregates over 2,400 services from Union and State governments, exposing user data.
  • Exposed data included Universal Account Numbers of provident fund subscribers, LPG booking details and Aadhaar numbers in plain text. Storing Aadhaar in plain text is disallowed by the Aadhaar Act, 2016. The IT Ministry acknowledged the vulnerabilities and CERT-In was involved.

New metal-organic framework method improves filtering of nuclear wastewater

  • Since 2023, Japan has been releasing treated wastewater from the ruined Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific. The residual contaminant is tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen that forms tritiated water.
  • A study in Environmental Science & Technology used a metal-organic framework (NH2-MIL-101(Cr)) coating on a steel mesh, which increased the packing surface area 32-fold and, at industrial height, was about 134 times more effective than the best previously reported method.

New study links human genetic diversity to the uniqueness of languages

  • A study published in PNAS combined genetic data from over 5,700 individuals across 650 populations and 4,200 languages, finding an inverse correlation between structural linguistic and human genetic diversity. The lead author is Anna Graff of the University of Zurich.
  • Isolated 'accumulation zones' such as New Guinea (with over 800 languages) harbour more diverse linguistic features, while migration homogenises 'spread zones'.

  • A Centre for Wildlife Studies (CWS) study found that rainfall is the strongest environmental factor linked to elephant occurrence in the southern Western Ghats across Karnataka and Kerala.
  • Researchers interviewed 507 residents in villages around Bandipur and Nagarahole National Parks and the Palakkad forest divisions. Land-cover mapping showed a rise in human settlements and a decline in dense vegetation between 2012 and 2022.

Citizenship must be decided through a fair, lawful and reasoned process: Supreme Court

  • The Supreme Court set aside a batch of 27 Gauhati High Court judgments that had declared the appellants to be foreigners, and remanded the cases to the Foreigners' Tribunals for fresh adjudication.
  • The Bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta held that a citizenship declaration cannot be sustained if the procedure adopted is mechanical, one-sided, or devoid of application of mind.
  • The Court said the State has a legitimate interest in preventing false claims to citizenship, but the grave consequence of being declared a foreigner requires constitutional guarantees of a fair opportunity.

Supreme Court stays Madras High Court order banning slaughter of cows and calves

  • The Supreme Court stayed a May 27, 2026 order of the Madras High Court that had directed Tamil Nadu to enforce a State-wide prohibition on the slaughter of cows and calves. The Bench comprised Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta.
  • Tamil Nadu argued that the direction was contrary to the Tamil Nadu Animal Preservation Act, 1958, which permits the slaughter of cows aged over 10 years that are unfit for work or breeding.

Supreme Court questions the misuse of the POCSO Act in consensual teenage relationships

  • The Supreme Court questioned the invocation of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against teenagers in voluntary relationships. The Bench comprised Justices B.V. Nagarathna and R. Mahadevan.
  • The Court asked whether relationships between those in the 15 to 18 age group should be treated under the penal provisions of the Act, acting through a suo motu case on the right to privacy of adolescents.

All seven Ladakh districts to get Autonomous Hill Development Councils; 17 new tehsils created

  • The Ladakh administration announced the creation of 17 new tehsils, taking the Union Territory's total to 32, and decided to extend the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Act to all seven districts.
  • A Union Home Ministry draft suggested a customised sui generis model of governance, with discussions on constitutional safeguards under Article 371. The Kargil Democratic Alliance had flagged an earlier imbalance.

First Land Border District SPs Conference; States flag illegal migrants on voter rolls

  • The first-ever Land Border District SPs Conference 2026 was held on July 9 in New Delhi, chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, with DGPs of 17 States and Union Territories attending.
  • Assam Police flagged illegal migrants obtaining documents to enter electoral rolls and the misuse of apps such as WhatsApp, Skred and Zangi for smuggling.

Assam Rifles jawan killed in an IED blast in Nagaland

  • An Assam Rifles jawan, Mohd. Iqbal, was killed and four others injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast at Chumoukedima district. Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio condemned the attack.

Retail inflation crosses the Reserve Bank target to 4.4% in June

  • India's retail inflation crossed the Reserve Bank's 4% target for the first time since January 2025, touching 4.4% in June (from 3.93% in May). Food inflation touched 5.05%, the highest in the new Consumer Price Index series.

Trade deficit widens fourfold in June as imports surge

  • India's trade deficit grew fourfold to 15.3 billion dollars in June 2026. Overall exports of goods and services grew 9.5% to 73.4 billion dollars, while total imports grew nearly 27% to 88.8 billion dollars. The Commerce Secretary is Rajesh Agrawal.

Higher Russian oil imports a deliberate strategy, government says

  • The government said importing more oil from Russia is a strategy adopted after the West Asia crisis. Russia now supplies over 2.6 million barrels a day, more than 40% of India's crude imports. India is also exploring imports from Venezuela.

Aditya Birla Renewables to acquire Sprng Energy in a 17,200-crore-rupee deal

  • Aditya Birla Renewables, a subsidiary of Grasim Industries, will acquire the Sprng Energy group from Shell for 17,200 crore rupees (1.8 billion dollars), adding a contracted renewable portfolio of 5 GWp.

HCL Tech to invest 3,500 crore rupees in the full-stack AI market

  • HCL Tech will invest 3,500 crore rupees in the full-stack AI market. Its Q1 net profit rose 20.3% to 4,624 crore rupees and revenue grew 13.9% to 34,579 crore rupees, with AI-led deal bookings worth 2.4 billion dollars, its highest ever.

Can biogas aid India's energy security? SATAT and GOBARdhan in focus

  • India imports about 85% of its crude oil needs. Compressed Biogas (CBG) is produced by anaerobic digestion. The SATAT initiative (2018) targeted 5,000 plants by 2023, but only 132 were completed by June 3, 2026.
  • The blending of CBG into the gas supply starts at 1% from FY26, rising to 5% by FY29. The GOBARdhan scheme offers grants of up to 50 lakh rupees per district.

Chief Minister launches new electronic family card at Perambur; 73,000 cards distributed

  • Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, on his first visit to his Perambur constituency after assuming office, launched the new electronic family card; some 73,000 families across Tamil Nadu received it.
  • He inaugurated the MLA office, sanctioned an immediate Local Area Development fund of 3 crore rupees for seven projects, and launched a grievance-redress app and the website tvkcm.com. Food Minister P. Venkataraman and others took part.

Tamil Nadu Cabinet to meet on July 16; interim budget for 2026-27 to be tabled

  • The Tamil Nadu Council of Ministers will meet on July 16. As the new government took office after the election, an interim financial statement (budget) for 2026-27 will be tabled, with the final budget expected in early August.

Government schools to get modern facilities; one model school per district planned

  • A Secretariat review chaired by the Chief Minister planned to upgrade government schools with one model school per district, smart classrooms and computer labs, with a target of upgrading 1,500 schools with advanced computer labs.

Engineering counselling begins; special reservation and quota seats detailed

  • Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) 2026 counselling began under the 7.5% special reservation for government-school students. Of 750 seats for differently-abled candidates, 159 were filled and 591 remained vacant. General category counselling begins July 15.

Palani temple land worth about 100 crore rupees fraudulently registered; Sub-Registrar removed

  • Land worth about 100 crore rupees (1.40 acres) of the Palani Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple was fraudulently registered to private persons after being undervalued at 2 crore rupees. The Sub-Registrar was removed and a case registered against four people.

Six killed in a bus collision near Madurai; Tamil Nadu police arrest 1,216 in a drug crackdown

  • Six people were killed and over 40 injured when a State Transport Corporation bus collided with an omnibus near Karungalakudi on the Madurai-Tiruchi Highway. The Chief Minister announced 3 lakh rupees to each deceased family.
  • In a separate drive, Tamil Nadu police arrested 1,216 people in 12 days for selling narcotics.

3,600-year-old skeletons and India's oldest iron sword unearthed at Mettur, Salem district

  • A Tamil Nadu Archaeology Department excavation at Thelunganur, on the Cauvery bank near Mettur in Salem district, unearthed about 3,600-year-old human skeletons, an iron sword and a burial urn. The dig was led by director S. Paranthaman over more than 90 days.
  • The iron sword is described as the oldest iron sword found in India, suggesting that ultra-high-carbon steel technology was practised by ancient Tamils millennia before its modern description. The site spans about 60 acres.

Poet and lyricist Vairamuthu conferred the 60th Jnanpith Award for 2025

  • Tamil poet and lyricist Vairamuthu was conferred the 60th Jnanpith Award for 2025, the third Tamil literary figure to receive it after Akilan and Jayakanthan. The award was presented by scholar Dr. Karan Singh.

Sahitya Akademi awardee Tamil writer Poomani passes away at 79

  • Tamil writer Poomani, chronicler of the karisal (black-soil) tracts, died at 79. Born at Andipatti near Kovilpatti, Thoothukudi district, he won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2014 for his novel Anjaadi.
  • His 1982 novel Vekkai was adapted into the National Award-winning film Asuran by director Vetrimaaran, starring Dhanush. The Chief Minister ordered state honours for the funeral.

Golden chariot of the Arulmigu Ekambaranathar Temple, Kancheepuram, taken out in procession

  • A newly completed 25-feet-tall golden chariot of the Arulmigu Ekambaranathar Temple, Kancheepuram, crafted by 108 artisans, was taken out in a Rathothsavam procession. Ministers S. Ramesh, R.V. Ranjithkumar and K. Thennarasu took part.

Legendary Tamil playback singer S. Janaki passes away

  • Legendary playback singer S. Janaki, widely known as the Nightingale of South India, passed away. Celebrated for her extraordinary vocal range and versatility across languages, she leaves a legacy spanning generations of film music.
