WHO warns of widening inequities in cancer care

The first Global Status Report on Cancer, 2026, by the WHO and the International Agency for Research on Cancer, said cancer causes an estimated 20.6 million new cases and nearly 10 million deaths a year, projected to rise to nearly 35 million cases by 2050.
It flagged widening inequities, noting that while 87% of women with breast cancer survive five years in high-income countries, only about 42% do so in low-income countries.

Chennai hospital treats brain lymphoma with indigenous CAR-T therapy

A 49-year-old patient with a rare primary central nervous system lymphoma (a brain cancer) was successfully treated using the indigenous CAR-T cell therapy NexCAR19 at a private hospital in Chennai.
The therapy involves collecting the patient's immune cells, modifying them to recognise and attack cancer cells, and infusing them back as CAR-T cells.

Ebola outbreak in DR Congo spurs push to complete pandemic treaty

WHO member states resumed talks to finalise the missing piece of the pandemic treaty adopted in 2025, given fresh urgency by an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo that has caused 506 deaths and 1,561 confirmed cases.
The treaty's Pathogen Access and Benefit-Sharing (PABS) system deals with sharing access to pathogens of pandemic potential and then sharing the resulting benefits, such as vaccines.

The Madras High Court granted anticipatory bail to former Minister V. Senthilbalaji and his brother R.V. Ashok Kumar in a case where a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) MLA, N. Elaiyaraja, was reportedly offered a bribe of ₹35 crore to switch sides.
Justice G.K. Manthiraiyan directed both to appear before the investigating officer twice a day until further orders and to cooperate with the probe.

DRDO flight-tests Pinaka guided rocket

EPFO to credit 8.25% interest by July 15

Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said the annual interest on Provident Fund deposits, at a rate of 8.25%, will be credited to subscribers' accounts by July 15; interest of over ₹1.44 lakh crore will go to about 34 crore members.

States shoulder a growing share of welfare spending

Combined Union and State allocations for select welfare schemes in 2025-26 amounted to ₹24.20 lakh crore, or 6.77% of GDP, with the Union government's contribution accounting for just 1.89% of GDP, an analysis showed.
States spent ₹4.14 lakh crore on unconditional cash transfers; as tax revenues favour the Union, the funding burden falls disproportionately on the States.

T.N. asks State Election Commissioner to step down

Madras HC stays release of Teacher Eligibility Test results

The Madras High Court granted an interim stay on the release of the results of the special Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) held for in-service teachers, on a plea filed by serving teachers.
The Supreme Court had made TET mandatory for teachers under the Right to Education Act, 2009, and had last month extended the timeline to acquire the qualification by a further three years.

34 electricity substations planned for Chennai region

The TNPDCL (Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation) will set up 34 substations in Chennai and the neighbouring districts of Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram at a total cost of ₹3,214 crore, after the city's power demand crossed a peak of 5,000 MW.
Of these, 13 substations will come up in the North Circle and 21 in the South Circle within this financial year.

Commercial Taxes Department launches virtual hearings
