Why does Tamil Nadu run a Palmyra Protection Mission?

The Budget speech describes the palmyra tree, known as the 'Karpaga Virutcham', as deeply intertwined with Tamil heritage and history, and hailed as the State Tree of Tamil Nadu. Nearly three lakh agricultural labour families in Tamil Nadu rely on the palmyra tree for their livelihood - so protecting the tree directly protects a large rural workforce.

Under the Mission, as announced for 2026-27:

The existing District and Block-level Committees constituted to regulate the felling of palmyra trees will be strengthened and closely monitored.
Palmyra value-addition units will be established.
Palmyra seeds and seedlings will be distributed.
Training in the production of value-added palmyra products and palmyra leaf products will be given through the Palm Products and Palmyra Development Board.
These components will be implemented at an allocation of Rs.2.10 crore from the state fund.
In addition, research on dwarf and early-bearing palmyra varieties at the Palmyra Research Station, Killikulam, in Thoothukudi district will be expedited, and the technologies made available to farmers at the earliest.
