Question 1

Which is the best Polity book for TNPSC?

Accepted Answer

For English-medium TNPSC aspirants, the best Polity book is M. Laxmikant's Indian Polity, read on top of the Samacheer Kalvi school book chapters. For Tamil-medium aspirants, Pragadeesh publication and Tamili publications produce Polity books of comparable depth in Tamil. Polity is the one subject where every serious mentor agrees a reference book is close to essential rather than optional - the school books give you the skeleton of the Constitution, but TNPSC's Polity questions demand the muscle: exact articles, precise powers, and fine distinctions between similar bodies.

Why Polity deserves a dedicated book when other subjects do not
Look at the weightage. In Group 1 Prelims, Indian Polity is Unit IV with 40 of the 175 General Studies questions - the second largest unit. In Group 2/2A Prelims it carries 15 of 75 GS questions; in Group 4, 15 of 75. In the Mains stages it returns even heavier: Group 1 Mains Paper III gives 100 marks to Polity and world affairs, and Group 2 Mains gives its largest single unit - 60 marks - to Constitution, Polity and Governance with Tamil Nadu focus. No other subject repeats this reliably at this weight across every exam, and Polity questions are also the most precision-hungry: "which article", "which body", "who appoints", "which amendment" - questions where almost-knowing scores zero.

The recommended stack, by medium

LayerEnglish mediumTamil medium

Foundation (read first)Samacheer Kalvi Civics/Polity chapters, 6th to 12thசமச்சீர் கல்வி குடிமையியல் அத்தியாயங்கள், 6 முதல் 12 வரை
Core referenceIndian Polity - M. LaxmikantPragadeesh publication / Tamili publications Polity books
Live layerConstitutional current affairs - new amendments, landmark judgments, commission reports - via a daily current-affairs habit

Why this order matters: Laxmikant read cold is dense and forgettable; Laxmikant read after the school chapters clicks, because you are adding precision to a structure you already recognise. Tamil-medium candidates should resist the myth that only English references are "real" - the Tamil publishers above cover the same constitutional ground, and answering in the language you think in is worth more marks than any book brand.

How toppers actually read Laxmikant (the part most articles skip)

Read chapters in syllabus order, not book order. Match each chapter to your exam's unit lines - Preamble, Fundamental Rights, DPSP, Union and State executive and legislature, Panchayat Raj, judiciary, elections, anti-corruption bodies - and skip what your syllabus does not name.
Convert every chapter into a one-page precision sheet: article numbers, appointing authorities, tenures, majorities required. These sheets - not the book - are what you revise in months four, five and six.
Turn facts into statement pairs. TNPSC's favourite Polity format is "which of the statements is correct". After each chapter, write three true/false statements from it; you are rehearsing the exam's own trick.
Tag the TN-relevant sections. The 73rd and 74th Amendments, the Tamil Nadu Panchayat Act's context, state executive and local government chapters deserve double weight - the state-focused exams return to them constantly.
Do not read it like a novel more than once. One full pass, then targeted re-reads driven by mock-test errors. Three passes of your precision sheets beat three passes of six hundred pages.

What about other Polity books?
D.D. Basu's Introduction to the Constitution is a classic but written for law students - excellent depth, inefficient for MCQ preparation. Compressed "TNPSC Polity guides" are fine as revision companions but dangerous as primary sources, because they drop the qualifying clauses that statement questions test. If your mock-test Polity accuracy is already above 80 percent, no additional book will move you as much as more previous-year questions will.

A mentor's honest warning
The most common Polity failure we see is not the wrong book - it is the right book, unfinished. Laxmikant abandoned at the President's discretionary powers helps nobody. Budget the book across six to eight weeks alongside your other units, chapter-matched to the syllabus, sheets made as you go, and it becomes the single highest-returning purchase in your entire preparation. See where Polity sits in each exam's full plan: Group 1 syllabus, Group 2/2A syllabus, Group 4 syllabus, and our complete verified book list.

Related doubts, answered briefly
Is Laxmikant enough on its own, without school books? For a strong candidate, mostly - but school-book phrasing appears in actual questions often enough that skipping it costs easy marks.
Which edition of Laxmikant should I buy? The latest available edition, because constitutional amendments and new bodies keep arriving; supplement any edition with current affairs regardless.
Is there a separate Polity book for Group 4? Not needed - Group 4's Polity is SSLC standard, and school books plus your precision sheets cover its 15 questions fully.
How many days for one full Laxmikant pass? With two hours daily alongside other subjects, six to eight weeks for a first pass with sheets - faster passes usually mean no sheets, which defeats the purpose.
A four-week Polity sprint using this stack
If Polity is currently your weak unit, here is a compressed plan that has worked repeatedly. Week one: Samacheer civics chapters end to end, marking every article number that appears. Week two: Laxmikant's chapters on the Preamble, Fundamental Rights, DPSP and Fundamental Duties, with a precision sheet per chapter. Week three: Union and State government chapters - executive, legislature, judiciary - plus Panchayat Raj with the 73rd and 74th Amendments. Week four: elections, constitutional and non-constitutional bodies, anti-corruption machinery, then fifty previous-year Polity questions under time. At the end of the sprint you hold roughly twenty precision sheets - from then on, Polity revision means those sheets plus mock-test errors, thirty minutes at a time, and the unit that frightens most beginners quietly becomes your rank-builder.

Question 2

Which study material is best for TNPSC preparation?

Accepted Answer

The best TNPSC study material is a small, layered stack: Samacheer Kalvi school books as the base, one trusted reference per heavy subject, a daily current-affairs source filed by syllabus unit, previous year question papers, and a test series that mirrors the real format. Everything else - random PDFs, ten-in-one guides, telegram forwards - is noise that feels like preparation while quietly replacing it. The material question in TNPSC is genuinely solved; what varies is whether candidates follow the solution.

The five-layer stack, in order of importance

LayerWhat exactlyWhy it earns its place

1. School booksSamacheer Kalvi 6th-12th (6th-10th is the core for Group 4), free on the official Tamil Nadu textbook portalThe single largest share of actual questions across every group is set from these pages
2. Subject referencesLaxmikant (Polity), Spectrum (Modern India), Poonam Dalal (Ancient/Medieval), Ramesh Singh (Economy, selectively), Majid Hussain (Geography), Shankar (Environment), R.S. Aggarwal (Aptitude and Reasoning); Tamil medium: Venkatesan (History), Pragadeesh publication / Tamili (Polity)Adds the precision Degree-standard questions demand, only where school books run thin
3. Current affairsA daily source organised by syllabus unit - our free daily bilingual current affairs follow the six Prelims units exactlyEvery unit of every official syllabus ends with "Current affairs"
4. Previous year papersOfficial question papers from tnpsc.gov.in, solved under timeThe only material written by the examiner - it teaches the paper's style, depth and traps directly
5. A test seriesFull-length, exam-identical, bilingual, with explanations and a rank list - like our ArivArk test seriesConverts knowledge into exam-day marks; exposes weak units while time remains

Free versus paid: an honest breakdown
Layers one, three and four can be entirely free: school books are on the official textbook portal as PDFs, our daily current affairs cost nothing, and TNPSC publishes its own question papers. The references in layer two are one-time purchases that serve multiple attempts and multiple groups. A test series is the one recurring spend that consistently justifies itself, because self-testing with honest timing and honest review is the discipline most aspirants cannot maintain alone. What you should not spend on: material that promises shortcuts around the official syllabus, "guess paper" collections, or any product whose source you cannot trace to the notification, the school books or a named reference.

Same stack, different mix per exam
Group 1: full stack at full depth - all six units from school books plus references, with answer-writing material added after Prelims. Group 2/2A: the same GS stack, plus dedicated Language-part material: school Tamil or English grammar, and the defined Unit VII literature lists straight from SSLC books. Group 4: deliberately lighter - 6th to 10th school books, a Tamil grammar guide for the 150-mark Tamil part, R.S. Aggarwal, and mocks; adding Degree-level references here wastes time the Tamil part needs. The details per exam: Group 1, Group 2/2A, Group 4.

How to judge any new material in sixty seconds

Source test: does it cite the official syllabus, school books or a named reference - or is it "compiled from various sources"?
Map test: can you point to the syllabus unit each section serves? If not, it will teach you things the exam cannot ask.
Precision test: open a Polity page - does it give article numbers and exact provisions, or paragraphs of vague description?
Freshness test: does it reflect the current pattern (for example, the 2025 Group 2A Mains scheme) or recycle an old cycle's structure?
Completion test - the honest one: will you actually finish it? Material you complete and revise beats better material you abandon.

A mentor's note on the real problem
After years of guiding aspirants, we rarely meet a candidate who failed for lack of material - we constantly meet candidates buried under too much of it. Every new PDF restarts your memory curve; every switched source resets your notes. The stack above is deliberately small because revision frequency, not material volume, is what the exam ultimately measures. Pick the stack, close the downloads folder, and give the next six months to finishing and revising - that is the whole secret, and it fits in five rows of a table.

Related doubts, answered briefly
Are old Samacheer books okay, or do I need the latest? Use the current books from the official portal - content revisions do reach question papers.
Is YouTube enough as study material? As a supplement for tough topics, yes; as a primary source, no - videos resist revision, and revision is the scoring activity.
Do I need separate material for Prelims and Mains? The base is shared; Mains (Groups 1 and 2) adds answer-writing practice and Mains-only topics. Build one set of notes that serves both from day one.
Printed books or PDFs? Whichever you will actually revise. Many toppers keep school books as PDFs but print their own one-page notes - the notes are the revision engine.
How much should the full stack cost? With free school books, papers and daily current affairs, the essential spend is a handful of reference books plus a test series - modest against the value of a government post, and far cheaper than a wasted attempt.
Organising the stack: the system that makes it work
Material only performs inside a system, so spend one evening setting yours up. Create one folder (physical or digital) per syllabus unit of your target exam, and file everything - school-book notes, reference sheets, current-affairs clippings, mock-test errors - into those unit folders and nowhere else. This single structure does three jobs at once: it exposes thin units at a glance (an empty folder is a warning), it makes revision sessions instant (open one folder, revise one unit), and it turns the vague anxiety of "so much to study" into a bounded, visible amount of material. Candidates who file by unit revise more, panic less, and walk into the hall knowing exactly what they know - which, in a paper with no negative marking and five options per question, is itself worth marks.

Question 3

Best Group in TNPSC? Group 1 vs 2 vs 2A vs 4 - Salary & Posts Compared

Accepted Answer

There is no single "best" TNPSC group - there is a best group for your qualification, your available preparation time, and your career goal. Group 1 offers the highest posts (Deputy Collector level, Pay Level 22) with the longest battle; Group 2/2A offers strong executive and ministerial careers with two stages and no interview; Group 4 offers the fastest entry with a single paper and the most vacancies (3,935 in the latest notification). The honest answer is a matching exercise, and this page gives you the full matrix to do it.

Choose by your situation, not by prestige alone
If you hold a degree and can commit a year or more of serious preparation: target Group 1, and let Group 2/2A ride along - the syllabus overlap means one preparation serves both, and Group 2/2A cycles give you real exam practice with real career outcomes while you chase the top posts.
If you hold a degree and want the best effort-to-outcome balance: Group 2/2A is the sweet spot many toppers recommend - two stages instead of three, no interview, strong posts, and cut-offs decided purely on paper. Between the two services, your writing skill versus MCQ speed should decide (see our Group 2 vs Group 2A comparison).
If your qualification is SSLC, or you want government service soonest: Group 4 is not a lesser choice - it is the highest-vacancy, fastest-cycle exam, and posts like VAO carry genuine authority and stability. Thousands of Group 2 officers started their service life through Group 4.
If you are a working professional with limited daily hours: start with Group 4 or Group 2A (objective formats reward consistent short practice), and step up once your foundation and confidence are built.

The overlap advantage: why this is not a permanent choice
All four groups draw General Studies from the same syllabus family - Polity, Economy with TN development, Indian and Tamil Nadu history, Science, Geography, Aptitude - at different depths, and the same Samacheer Kalvi school books feed all of them. Preparing sincerely for any one group builds 60 to 80 percent of the preparation for the others. That changes the question from "which group forever?" to "which group first?" - a much lower-stakes decision. Most successful aspirants write every exam they are eligible for and let the results decide.

Whatever you choose, read the full stage map before you begin: Group 1 syllabus, Group 2/2A syllabus, Group 4 syllabus.

Related doubts, answered briefly
Is Group 1 harder than Group 2? Deeper rather than harder: three stages, descriptive Mains at 750 marks, and an interview. The topics overlap; the demanded depth and writing skill differ.
Which group has the highest salary? Group 1 posts (Pay Level 22 in the 2026 notification). Within Group 2, posts reach Level 18.
Can I write more than one group in the same year? Yes, if you meet each notification's eligibility - the exams are separate recruitments, and most serious aspirants write all they qualify for.
Does Group 4 experience help later? Directly: in-service candidates continue writing higher exams with a salary in hand, and the preparation base carries straight into Group 2/2A.
Which group for someone strong in Tamil? Group 4 rewards Tamil most immediately - its Tamil part is half the marks and fully counted in ranking.
Three real profiles, three right answers
Profile one: a 23-year-old fresh graduate with family support for full-time preparation. The right call is Group 1 as the primary target with Group 2/2A written alongside. Youth is the asset here - the three-stage battle takes cycles to win, and every Group 2/2A attempt along the way is both a rehearsal and a genuine career door.
Profile two: a 28-year-old private employee with two focused hours a day. The right call is usually Group 2A or Group 4 first. Objective formats convert consistent small sessions into marks better than descriptive formats do, and an early selection changes the family's risk calculus - stepping up to Group 2 or Group 1 from inside government service is a well-worn path.
Profile three: an SSLC-qualified aspirant from a rural background. Group 4 is not the consolation prize; it is the plan. The VAO post in particular offers village-level authority, deep public contact and stable service - and its Tamil-heavy paper genuinely favours candidates from Tamil-medium schooling, one of the few exams where that background is a scoring advantage.
The pattern across all three: "best group" is a function of your constraints today, not your ambition ceiling. Choose the first target you can realistically win with the hours you truly have, and let the overlap carry you upward from there.

Question 4

Which is best, Group 2 or Group 2A? An honest comparison

Accepted Answer

Group 2 is the better choice if you write well and want higher executive posts; Group 2A is the better choice if your strength is objective speed and you want a strong ministerial career decided entirely by MCQs. Both share the same Common Prelims, the same qualifying Tamil Eligibility Test, and the same no-interview rule - so the real decision is about the Mains format and the posts, not the preparation base.

What is identical between them

One Common Preliminary Examination (code 495): 200 questions - 75 General Studies, 25 Aptitude, 100 Language - with 90 qualifying marks for all communities. You do not choose between 2 and 2A to write Prelims.
The Tamil Eligibility Test at Mains: 100 marks descriptive, 40 to qualify, shared by both services.
No interview in either. Your written Mains score alone builds the rank list.
The preparation base: the same school books, the same GS foundations, the same daily current affairs habit serve both.

Where they genuinely differ

Group 2Group 2A

Service typeExecutive posts - Deputy Commercial Tax Officer, Assistant Inspector of Labour, Probation Officer and moreMinisterial posts - Full-Time Assistants and similar roles
Pay levelUp to Level 18 (latest notification)Below Group 2's executive levels
Mains format (Paper II)Descriptive: 300 marks, 7 units, 24 written answers (about 3,600 words) in 3 hoursObjective CBT: 200 questions - 150 General Studies + 50 Reasoning (2025 scheme)
Deciding skillStructured answer writing at speed, in Tamil or EnglishMCQ accuracy, elimination and reasoning speed
Distinctive syllabus areaBroader all-India units with TN focus, including Ethics-adjacent governance themesA 45-question Administration of States unit - Secretariat and district administration in depth
Nature of work after selectionField and enforcement flavoured - assessments, inspections, caseworkOffice administration - files, records, correspondence

The self-test that settles it
Take one 15-mark Group 2 style question ("Examine the role of the District Collector in development administration") and write a 200-word answer in 12 minutes. Then attempt 25 reasoning MCQs in 15 minutes. Your comfort gap between those two sessions is the honest answer no article can give you. Candidates who enjoy constructing arguments, remember material as connected stories, and write legible Tamil or English at speed thrive in Group 2 Mains. Candidates who process options fast, spot traps, and prefer certainty over composition thrive in Group 2A's CBT.

Strategy note: you do not choose at Prelims
Since the Prelims is common, the practical play for most aspirants is to prepare once, write the Common Prelims, and keep both doors open - the service preference comes at application and counselling. What you should decide early is your Mains practice emphasis: if Group 2 is your priority, daily answer writing must start months before results; if Group 2A, timed MCQ sets across the five GS units plus the 27 reasoning topic areas. Doing neither until results is the classic way to waste the gap between Prelims and Mains.

A mentor's honest take
When candidates ask us directly, we ask back: "Show me your mock answer sheets." Strong, organised handwriting with clear points - we point them to Group 2, because descriptive Mains rewards exactly that and the posts justify the extra skill. Sharp objective scores with weak or slow writing - Group 2A, where their strength is the entire game. And for the many who fall in between: prepare for Group 2's Mains, because that preparation automatically covers Group 2A's GS units, while the reverse is not true. Full syllabus detail for both paths is on our Group 2/2A syllabus page, and the wider group choice is covered in which group is best in TNPSC.

Related doubts, answered briefly
Is the Group 2A exam easier than Group 2? The format is more familiar (MCQs), but competition is heavy in both, and the 2A Mains includes a deep Administration of States unit most candidates underprepare. Easier format is not easier selection.
Can I switch preference later? Post preferences are exercised in the application and counselling process per that notification's rules - but your Mains exam is service-specific, so your real choice happens when you decide which Mains to prepare for.
Do both need the Tamil Eligibility Test? Yes - the same 100-mark qualifying paper gates both services' Mains evaluation.
Which has more vacancies? It varies by cycle and notification; neither is consistently larger. Choose by fit, not by one cycle's vacancy table.
If I clear both, which should I take? Group 2's executive posts sit higher in pay and career trajectory - most counselling choices reflect that - but candidates who value desk-based work genuinely prefer 2A roles. Know your preference before counselling day, not during it.
Preparation load: measure it in months, not marks
A practical difference candidates only discover late: the Mains preparation cycles feel different. Group 2's descriptive Mains demands a daily writing habit sustained over months - 24 answers in 180 minutes is roughly one substantial answer every seven and a half minutes, a physical skill your hand and structure-sense must be trained for. Group 2A's Mains rewards a different grind: cycling through the five GS units and the 27 reasoning topic areas until timed accuracy stabilises above your target. Neither is lighter; they are differently shaped. If your daily schedule can hold a quiet hour for writing practice, Group 2's shape fits it. If your schedule is fragmented into short slots on a phone or between shifts, Group 2A's MCQ drills fit fragments far better - a fact working aspirants should weigh heavily, because the preparation you can actually sustain beats the preparation that looks better on paper.

Question 5

What is the difference between TNPSC Group 2 and Group 4? Which should I prepare for?

Accepted Answer

This is one of the most common strategic questions TNPSC aspirants ask, and the honest answer is: they are not really competitors for the same seat, and most serious aspirants end up preparing for both together rather than choosing one over the other. Here is the full comparison, verified from the official notifications, plus practical guidance on sequencing your preparation.

The structural differences, side by side

Group 2 / 2AGroup 4

Minimum qualificationBachelor's degree (most posts)SSLC (10th pass)
Selection stagesCommon Prelims (200 Q) + separate Main ExaminationSingle stage - one 200-question paper decides everything
InterviewNo, for the non-interview posts covered hereNo
General Studies standardDegree standard (Prelims and Main)SSLC standard throughout
Typical postsAssistant, Sub Registrar, Deputy Commercial Tax Officer, Forester and similarVAO, Junior Assistant, Typist, Steno-Typist, Field Assistant and similar
Pay level (illustrative)Generally higher pay levels than Group 4 clerical postsLevel 3-10 depending on post (e.g. VAO is Level 8)

Why the syllabus overlap matters more than the difficulty gap
Both exams draw General Studies questions from the same core six-unit family (General Science, Geography of India, History and National Movement, Indian Polity, Indian Economy and TN Development, TN History/Culture/Heritage) - the difference is depth, not topic. Group 4 tests these at SSLC standard; Group 2's Prelims tests them at Degree standard with a heavier Language component; Group 2's Main goes deeper still. This means a candidate who studies the Samacheer Kalvi school textbooks thoroughly and layers on Degree-level depth for Polity, Economy and current affairs is simultaneously preparing for both exams - very little of your study time is genuinely group-specific.

Who should prioritise which, if you can only do one first
If you are still completing (or have just completed) your degree, or your school-leaving marks were modest and you want SSLC-standard papers to build confidence and exam temperament first, Group 4 is the more approachable entry point - shorter syllabus depth, single stage, faster result-to-appointment cycle. If you already hold a degree and want to aim higher immediately, or you specifically want a post that only exists at Group 2/2A level (Sub Registrar, Deputy Commercial Tax Officer, Assistant with typing certification), preparing directly for Group 2/2A from the start makes more sense - repeating Group 4 exclusively when you are already degree-qualified for Group 2 can mean spending years re-attempting a lower-tier exam instead of using that same preparation for a higher one.
Neither exam is "easier" in an absolute sense once you account for competition: Group 4's lower qualification bar (SSLC) means a far larger pool of applicants per seat, so competition intensity can be just as fierce as Group 2 despite the shorter syllabus. Choosing based on "which is easier" is usually the wrong frame - choosing based on which posts you actually want, and which qualification you already hold, is the right one.

Career growth after appointment
Group 4 posts are entry-level government service; promotion within the same department over years of service is the typical path upward, sometimes eventually reaching Group 2-equivalent responsibilities through internal promotion rather than a fresh TNPSC exam. Group 2/2A posts start at a materially higher pay level and responsibility band from day one. If long-term career trajectory matters more to you than getting into government service quickly, that is a real factor worth weighing alongside your current qualification.

A worked scenario
Consider a candidate who has just finished a B.A. degree with a modest academic record and no specific professional certification. Applying only for Group 4 would mean competing at SSLC standard against both degree holders and school-leavers alike, in a very large applicant pool, for entry-level posts below what their degree could otherwise open doors to. Applying only for Group 2/2A skips the confidence-building, lower-syllabus-depth stage entirely. The pragmatic path most successful aspirants in this exact position take: attempt both in the same preparation cycle where the calendar allows it, using Group 4's earlier, shorter-syllabus exam as a live rehearsal for exam-day nerves and OMR/CBT mechanics, while the bulk of study hours go toward Group 2/2A's deeper syllabus, since clearing the higher exam automatically means you were more than ready for the lower one.

Our free CORE 50 and paid Legacy Batch both cover the shared General Studies syllabus, so studying with us prepares you for Group 2, Group 4 and Group 1 at the same time - you are never wasting preparation time by keeping your options open across groups.
Pay level and stage count, side by side
The clearest structural difference: Group 2/2A is a two-stage exam (Common Prelims + Main), Group 4 is a single written exam with no separate Main - and neither has an Interview. Pay levels also differ meaningfully by post, verified from actual notifications:

GroupExample postPay level

Group 2Assistant Inspector (Labour) / Deputy Commercial Tax OfficerLevel 18
Group 4Village Administrative OfficerLevel 8
Group 4Field AssistantLevel 6
Group 4Forest GuardLevel 5

Pay level is fixed per post in every notification (it can vary between cycles as posts are added or revised), but the pattern holds consistently: Group 2/2A posts sit well above Group 4 posts on the pay matrix, which is the main practical reason aspirants who clear Group 4 first often continue preparing for Group 2/2A rather than stopping. Since both exams share the same broad General Studies syllabus base, most candidates prepare for both together rather than choosing one exclusively - the Prelims-level content overlaps substantially, and the extra push needed for Group 2/2A's Main paper depth (or Group 2A's CBT speed) is manageable on top of solid Group 4 preparation.
Standard of the syllabus, not just the marks
Beyond pay level, the General Studies standard itself differs: Group 2/2A's Common Prelims and Main papers are set at Degree standard, while Group 4's General Studies component is set at SSLC standard. This is precisely why candidates who clear Group 4 comfortably do not automatically clear Group 2/2A without extra preparation - the topic list overlaps, but Group 2/2A genuinely expects deeper, degree-level treatment of the same subjects, not just more questions on them.

Question 6

PSTM Act Amendment 2026: New One-Time Rule for the 20% Tamil Medium Quota

Accepted Answer

The Government of Tamil Nadu has amended the law behind the 20% PSTM reservation - the preferential quota for Persons Studied in Tamil Medium in state government jobs. Act No. 12 of 2026 received the Governor's assent on 6 August 2026 and was published in the Tamil Nadu Government Gazette (Extraordinary No. 345) on 11 August 2026. It changes who can claim the PSTM quota, and how many times. Every fact below is taken directly from the official Gazette.

Quick Background: What Is PSTM Reservation?
Under the Tamil Nadu Appointment on Preferential Basis in the Services under the State of Persons Studied in Tamil Medium Act, 2010 (Tamil Nadu Act 40 of 2010), 20% of vacancies in direct recruitment to state government posts are set apart, on a preferential basis, for candidates who studied in Tamil medium. TNPSC applies this quota in its recruitments, including the current Group 2/2A cycle.

The Three Changes Made by Act 12 of 2026

1. PSTM Quota Is Only for Direct Recruitment - Not Recruitment by Transfer
The Act rewrites the definition of "direct recruitment" in the 2010 law. Direct recruitment now clearly means appointment through an open competitive examination, interview or both - and it does not include appointment by recruitment by transfer (the route by which someone already in government service moves into another post). "Recruitment by transfer" carries the meaning given in the Tamil Nadu Government Servants (Conditions of Service) Act, 2016.
This change is retrospective from 7 September 2010 - the date the original PSTM Act came into force - so the law is treated as having always meant this.

2. One-Time Benefit: The Quota Cannot Be Used Twice for the Same Level
A new sub-section (1-A) is inserted into section 3 of the 2010 Act: a person who has already been appointed through a PSTM preferential vacancy is not entitled to compete for PSTM preferential vacancies again - except for a post carrying a higher level of pay.
In plain words: the 20% quota is a one-time ladder at each level. If you got a job through the PSTM quota, you can use the quota again only to move up to a better-paid post, not sideways into another post at the same or lower pay.
This rule applies only to preferential vacancies notified on or after 11 August 2026 (the date the Amendment Act was published in the Gazette). Vacancies notified before that date are not affected.

3. All Past PSTM Appointments Stand Validated
The Act declares that every notification and every appointment made in PSTM preferential vacancies between 7 September 2010 and 11 August 2026 - including appointments of persons who were already in government service - shall be treated as validly made, notwithstanding anything in the principal Act or in any judgment, decree or order of any Court. Nobody already appointed through the quota loses their job because of this amendment.

What This Means for TNPSC Aspirants

Fresh candidates lose nothing. If you studied in Tamil medium and are applying for your first government job, the 20% PSTM quota works exactly as before.
Government servants coming through transfer cannot claim PSTM vacancies. The quota belongs to open-competition direct recruitment only.
Already got a job through PSTM? From vacancies notified on or after 11 August 2026, you can claim the quota again only for a post with a higher level of pay.
The current Group 2/2A recruitment (Notification 07/2026, exam on 1 November 2026) falls after the Gazette date, so the one-time-benefit rule applies to its PSTM vacancies.

Keep These Ready First

Aadhaar: it must be linked to your OTR. Without it you cannot apply.
A new photo: taken on or after 6 October 2026. Make the photo (20 to 50 KB) and signature (10 to 20 KB) files with our free TNPSC photo and signature tool.
Your SSLC certificate: your name, date of birth and community must match it. If you wrote SSLC more than once, use the details of the attempt you passed.
Other certificates for the post you want: for example the typewriting or shorthand certificate for Typist and Steno-Typist, or your degree for posts that need one.
The fee: Rs. 100, paid online. If you are new to TNPSC, the OTR fee of Rs. 150 is extra (valid for 5 years).

Step-by-Step: How to Apply

Open www.tnpscexams.in, the TNPSC application website.
New to TNPSC? Create your One Time Registration first: your name exactly as in your certificates, date of birth, community, education, photo, signature, mobile number and email. Link your Aadhaar. Pay Rs. 150. Our OTR guide has every step.
Log in with the User ID and password you created. Forgot them? Use "Forgot User ID" or "Forgot Password" on the login page.

Question 8

TNPSC Group 4 Age Limit 2026: 18 to 30, Up to 35 for SC/ST

Accepted Answer

For most TNPSC Group 4 posts in 2026, the age limit is 18 to 30 for the general category, up to 32 for BC, BCM and MBC/DC, and up to 35 for SC, SC(A) and ST. If you are from a reserved category and studied more than the minimum, there is no upper age limit for most posts. Your age is counted on 1 July 2026. These numbers are from Notification No. 11/2026 (6 October 2026). They are 2 years lower than last time (Notification 07/2025: 32 / 34 / 37). So check again, even if you were eligible last year.

* No-limit rule: for the posts marked *, BC, BCM, MBC/DC, SC, SC(A) and ST candidates have no upper age limit if they studied more than the minimum for the post. For example, if the post needs SSLC and you have HSC or a degree. This rule is not for VAO or the two forest posts. Even with no limit, you must be below 60 on 1 July 2026 and when you join the job.

Persons with disability cannot apply for the two forest posts. For those posts, an ex-serviceman can apply if he is below 35 after taking away his years of service. The extra age for ex-servicemen is not given to anyone who already has a government job.

How Your Age Is Checked
TNPSC checks your date of birth in your SSLC or HSC mark sheet from the Tamil Nadu board. If neither shows it, you can upload a Birth Certificate, Transfer Certificate or degree mark sheet. No other proof is accepted. Example: if you were born on 2 July 1996, you are 29 on 1 July 2026, so you can apply in the general category. If you were born on 1 July 1996, you have completed 30, so you cannot.

Question 9

TNPSC Age Limit 2026: Group 1, 2 & 4 (Up to 42 for BC/MBC/SC/ST)

Accepted Answer

TNPSC age limit 2026 at a glanceExamMinimum ageMaximum - OthersMaximum - BC/MBC/SC/STGroup 121 (every post)34 (most posts)39Group 2 / 2A18 (most posts)3242Group 4 (2026)18 (VAO & Forest posts: 21)3032 (BC/MBC), 35 (SC/ST); no limit with a higher qualification; VAO 40Persons with benchmark disability, ex-servicemen and destitute widows get further concessions on top of these figures, and a few posts set their own bands - the exact post-wise numbers are explained below.Age limit is the single most misunderstood eligibility rule in TNPSC, because aspirants often quote a single number ("18 to 30") when the real rule is fixed post-by-post inside each notification. This answer walks through the exact figures for Group 1, Group 2/2A and Group 4, verified directly from the official notifications (Group 1 05/2026, Group 2/2A 8/2024, Group 4 07/2025), plus how the age concessions actually stack, and how the "as on 1 July" calculation works with a worked example.

Group 1 - minimum age is 21 for every post
Unlike Group 2 and Group 4, every single Group 1 post requires a minimum age of 21 (not 18). The maximum age varies by post and reservation category:

PostMax age - OthersMax age - BC/MBC/SC/ST

Deputy Collector3439
Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Taxes) - general degree3439
Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Taxes) - B.L. degree3540
Deputy Registrar of Co-operative Societies3439
District Registrar3439
Assistant Commissioner of Labour3439

Every Group 1 post also carries a further concession on top of the BC/MBC/SC/ST relaxation: +10 years for persons with benchmark disability, +5 years for ex-servicemen, and a separate figure for destitute widows (typically matching the ex-servicemen concession). These concessions are not usually cumulative with each other beyond what the notification specifies for a given category - always check the exact table for the post you want, since the notification lists them side by side.

Group 2 / 2A - minimum age 18 for most posts, but not all
The default is minimum 18, maximum 32 (Others) / 42 (BC/MBC/SC/ST). But several individual posts override this:

Probation Officer: minimum age 26 (not 18) - this post specifically wants slightly more mature candidates given the social work nature of the role.
Sub Registrar, Grade-II: minimum age 20.
Forester: minimum age 21, and a separate, lower maximum age band (32 for Others, with a distinct ex-servicemen concession of 37 rather than the general 50 seen elsewhere) - because Forester involves a Physical Standards Test and Endurance Test (a supervised walk of 25 km and 16 km), so the age band is deliberately tighter.

Group 4 - minimum age 18 for most posts, but VAO and Forest posts need 21
Update, 6 October 2026: the 2026 Group 4 notification (11/2026) lowers these limits by two years - 18 to 30 for the general category, 32 for BC/MBC and 35 for SC/ST (VAO: 21 to 30, or 40 for reserved categories). The table below is from the 2025 notification; the current tables are on our Group 4 Age Limit 2026 page.

PostMin ageMax age - OthersMax age - BC/MBC/SC/ST

Village Administrative Officer (VAO)213242

Forest Guard, Forest Guard with Driving Licence, Forest Watcher213242*

*Forest Guard and Forest Watcher posts specify a special allowance: a candidate discharged from the Army, Navy or Air Force is eligible if, after deducting their service period, they have not crossed 32 years - a slightly different mechanism from the standard ex-servicemen concession used elsewhere.

Writing Group 4 on 10 January 2027? The full category-wise Group 4 tables - including who has no maximum age limit at all - are on our dedicated TNPSC Group 4 Age Limit page.
How the concessions actually stack
Age relaxation is not simply "add every concession together." Each notification lists a single maximum age figure per category combination (for example, "BC candidate who is also an ex-serviceman" gets one specific number, not the BC number plus the ex-servicemen number added on top). Persons with benchmark disability, ex-servicemen and destitute widows each get their own column in the official table - read the exact cell for your specific combination of category and post, rather than doing your own addition.

Worked example: how "as on 1 July" is calculated
Age is always reckoned as on 1 July of the year the notification names (for the 2026 Group 1 notification, that is 1 July 2026). So if you were born on 15 August 2005, your age on 1 July 2026 is 20 years and about 10.5 months - you would not yet have completed 21, and would miss the Group 1 minimum age for that year's notification, even though you would turn 21 about six weeks later. In that scenario, you would need to wait for the following year's notification, by which point you would have crossed 21 by the reference date. This is exactly why checking the reference date printed in each fresh notification matters more than just checking your age today.

What counts as proof of age
Your date of birth is verified against your SSLC (10th standard) mark sheet, or your HSC (12th standard) mark sheet if SSLC does not show it. Only if neither school-leaving certificate mentions your date of birth does TNPSC accept a Birth Certificate, Transfer Certificate or Degree mark sheet as an alternative - no other document is accepted, and not uploading one of these when required results in rejection after due process. If you are claiming an age concession (BC/MBC/SC/ST community certificate, disability certificate, ex-servicemen discharge certificate, or destitute widow proof), that supporting document must also be uploaded with your application - a missed upload is treated the same as not having the concession at all.

No cap on number of attempts
There is no artificial limit on how many times you can attempt TNPSC exams. You may apply every single year a fresh notification is released, for as long as you remain within the maximum age limit (plus applicable concessions) for that specific post and category. The only real constraint is the age ceiling itself, not a separate "3 attempts" or "5 attempts" rule like some other competitive exams use.

Once you have confirmed your eligibility for the post you're targeting, start preparing with our Group 1 Prelims Test Series or the free CORE 50 batch, both built around the same weightage the real exam uses.
Quick answers to two questions that come up constantly
Which date does TNPSC actually calculate my age from? Every TNPSC notification fixes age as on a specific reference date stated in that notification (commonly 1 July of the exam year) - not your date of application, not the exam date itself. Always check the specific reference date printed in the notification you're applying under, since it can shift between cycles.
Can I request an age relaxation beyond what's listed? No. Every notification states explicitly that requests for exemption from the age limit or other qualifications will receive no attention - the concessions published in the notification's age table are the complete and final list for that recruitment; there is no appeals process for an additional relaxation.

Question 10

What is the TNPSC vision standard? Standard I, II and III explained

Accepted Answer

The TNPSC vision standard is a post-wise visual acuity requirement that applies to selected candidates, not to applicants. TNPSC notifications prescribe one of three tiers for each post - Standard I (the strictest), Standard II, or Standard III (the most common tier) - and, crucially, the notifications themselves provide a route for candidates with defective vision: an Eye Fitness certificate from a qualified Eye Specialist working in a Government Hospital, submitted at the time of joining. In plain words: wearing glasses does not stop you from writing TNPSC exams, and for most posts it does not stop you from getting the job either.

Watch our 60-second explainer, then read the full details below.

Where the vision standard actually appears in the process
This is the single biggest confusion we see, so let us settle it first. The vision standard is listed under "Medical and Physical Standards" in every notification, and both the recent Group 1 notification (05/2026, para 4.3) and the Group 2/2A notification (8/2024, para 4.3.1) say the same thing: candidates selected for appointment must produce a certificate of physical fitness at the time of joining the post. There is no eye test at the application stage, no eye test in the Prelims or Mains hall, and nothing to upload about your eyesight when you apply. The standard becomes relevant only after you have won the rank - which is why no aspirant should ever drop the exam out of fear about their spectacles.

The three standards, and which posts need which
The official notifications assign each post one of three vision tiers. From the two notifications students ask about most:

NotificationPostPrescribed vision standard

Group 1 (05/2026, para 4.3.2)Deputy Collector, Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Taxes), Deputy Registrar of Co-operative Societies, District Registrar, Assistant Commissioner of LabourStandard III or better - all five posts
Provision for defective visionEye Fitness certificate from a Government Hospital eye specialist at joining (para 4.3.3)
Group 2/2A (8/2024, para 4.3.1.2)Probation Officer; ForesterStandard I
Assistant InspectorStandard II or better
All other Group II and IIA postsStandard III or better

Read the pattern: the strict Standard I applies to a small set of field-duty posts (the Forester also carries separate height and chest requirements in the same notification), Standard II to a single inspection post, and Standard III - the most accommodating tier - to everything else, including every Group 1 post in the current notification. The vast majority of TNPSC posts sit at Standard III.

What "Standard III or better" means for a spectacle-wearing aspirant
The notifications do not print clinical acuity charts - the detailed definitions of each standard sit in the government's medical rules, and the assessment is made by the government medical authorities at the fitness stage, not by you at home. But the notifications tell you the practically important part themselves: paragraph 4.3.3 of the Group 1 notification (and its twin, 4.3.1.3 in Group 2/2A) explicitly instructs "candidates with defective vision" to submit an Eye Fitness certificate from a qualified Eye Specialist working in a Government Hospital at the time of joining. That sentence exists precisely because defective-but-certified vision is compatible with these posts. If glasses corrected vision were disqualifying, there would be nothing for that certificate to certify.

The clinical definitions: what Standard I, II and III actually require
The acuity values behind the three standards come from the guidelines laid down in G.O.Ms.No.34, Personnel and Administrative Reforms (Personnel-R) Department, dated 12.1.1983 - the government order the medical authorities apply when they certify your tier:

Standard IStandard IIStandard III

Distant vision without glasses6/6 in each eye6/9 better eye and 6/9 worse eye6/9 better eye and 6/9 worse eye
Distant vision with glassesNot applicable - naked-eye standardor 6/6 better eye and 6/12 worse eyeor 6/6 better eye and 6/12 worse eye
Near vision0.5 (Sn) right eye and left eye0.6 (Sn)-
Myopia limit (including cylinder)-Shall not exceed (-)4DShall not exceed (-)6D for candidates up to 20 years of age, subject to an overall limit of (-)8
Hypermetropia limit (including cylinder)-Shall not exceed (+)4DShall not exceed (+)6D

Read the table and the practical message is clear: Standard I demands unaided 6/6 vision in both eyes, which is why it is reserved for a handful of field posts, while Standards II and III explicitly accept spectacle-corrected vision within the stated power limits - confirming what the notifications' Eye Fitness certificate provision already implied. If your current spectacle power is within these limits for your target post's tier, the vision standard is not an obstacle.
Do not confuse the vision standard with the blindness / low-vision reservation
These are two entirely different provisions that students constantly mix up. The vision standard is a fitness requirement applied to all selected candidates. Separately, under the rights-based reservation for persons with benchmark disabilities, blindness and low vision form a recognised disability category - the same notifications identify specific posts as suitable for candidates from this category, with 4 percent reservation, scribe provisions and extra time in the exam hall, and (in Group 4) the option of a General English paper in place of the Tamil paper. So a candidate with a benchmark visual disability is not blocked by the vision standard - they are covered by a different, protective track. If this is your situation, read your notification's benchmark-disability annexure carefully and claim your category correctly at application.

Practical guidance from our mentoring experience

Do not self-reject. Every cycle we meet aspirants who quietly skipped TNPSC because "my eyesight is weak". For Standard III posts - most posts - that fear is unfounded.
Get a routine eye check early, not because the exam demands it, but so that any correction (new glasses, treatment) is settled long before a joining-time medical could raise it.
Know your target post's tier before choosing preferences. If you are drawn to Standard I posts like Forester, check your uncorrected fitness realistically first - and note their separate physical standards too.
Keep the certificate rule in mind for joining day: defective vision means an Eye Fitness certificate from a Government Hospital eye specialist, not a private prescription slip.
Always read your own notification's para 4.3. Post lists and tiers can change between cycles; the paragraph is short and takes two minutes.

Related doubts, answered briefly
Will wearing spectacles reduce my selection chances? No. Selection is by marks; the vision standard is a post-joining fitness matter, and Standard III posts explicitly accommodate corrected vision with a certificate.
Is there any eye test during the exam itself? No. No stage of the written examination involves a vision test.
I had LASIK surgery - am I eligible? The notifications set acuity standards, assessed at the medical fitness stage by government doctors; corrected outcomes are evaluated there. Nothing in the application process asks about surgery.
Where are Standard I, II and III clinically defined? In the guidelines laid down in G.O.Ms.No.34, Personnel and Administrative Reforms (Personnel-R) Department, dated 12.1.1983 - see the clinical table above. The notification prescribes which tier a post needs, and the medical authorities certify whether you meet it.
Which posts should a low-vision (benchmark disability) candidate look at? The posts identified as suitable for the blindness/low-vision category in your notification's disability annexure - a protective reservation track, separate from the fitness standard discussed above.
Vision standards are one strand of eligibility - see our age limit and educational qualification FAQs for the rest, verified from the same official notifications, and the full exam maps on the Group 1 and Group 2/2A syllabus pages.

Question 11

What educational qualification is needed for TNPSC Group 1, 2 and 4?

Accepted Answer

TNPSC's baseline qualification rule is simple - degree for Group 1 and most of Group 2/2A, SSLC for Group 4 - but a genuinely large number of individual posts carry their own specific twist: a particular subject, a typing certificate, a preference order between multiple qualifications, or a relaxation for reserved categories. This answer goes post-by-post using the actual notification tables, not a generic summary, so you can check the exact post you're targeting.

Group 1 - degree, with post-specific preference orders

PostQualification

Deputy CollectorAny recognised university degree
Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Taxes)Any degree; preference order: (1) B.Com + B.L. + Diploma in Taxation Laws, (2) B.Com + B.L., (3) B.Com or B.L. + Diploma in Taxation Laws, (4) B.Com or B.L. alone
Deputy Registrar of Co-operative SocietiesAny recognised university degree
District RegistrarAny recognised university degree
Assistant Commissioner of LabourAny recognised university degree; preference to freedom fighters and their immediate family (father, mother, son, daughter, grandson, unmarried granddaughter)

Note the Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Taxes) preference order carefully - it does not mean you need both B.Com and B.L. to be eligible (any degree qualifies you to apply), it only affects who gets preferred when multiple candidates are otherwise equal in the selection process.

Group 2 / 2A - mostly a degree, but read every post's exact wording
Selected examples that differ meaningfully from a plain "any degree":

Probation Officer: a degree in Arts or Science, with preference to Sociology/Psychology graduates and to those with social-welfare work experience or a Diploma in Social Service.
Deputy Commercial Tax Officer: B.A., B.Sc. or B.Com., with a six-tier preference order between Commerce/Law degree combinations, capped by ex-servicemen preference.
Assistant Inspector: any recognised degree, with preference to eleven listed alternative Social Work/Labour qualifications (MSW, PG Diplomas from specific named institutes) - a post built for candidates with a social-work background.
Sub Registrar, Grade-II: any recognised degree, with preference to those who additionally hold a B.L. degree.
Special Assistant / Special Branch Assistant: a recognised degree plus a Government Technical Examination pass in Typewriting (English and Tamil, Higher Grade for Special Assistant; Lower Grade minimum for Special Branch Assistant, to be upgraded to Higher Grade during probation).
Assistant Section Officer (post code 2201): a Master's degree, OR a Bachelor's degree plus a B.G.L. degree, OR a Bachelor's degree with First Class in any one part - except for SC, SC(A), ST, MBC/DC, BC(OBCM) and BCM candidates, for whom a plain Bachelor's degree is sufficient. This is a genuine, official relaxation built into the qualification itself, not just the age limit.
Assistant Section Officer-cum-Programmer: specifically a Master's degree in Computer Applications, or an M.Sc. in Information Technology/Computer Science - a general degree does not qualify for this post.
Forester: a Bachelor's degree in Science or Engineering, but only in one of seventeen listed subjects (Agriculture, Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, all Engineering branches, Environmental Science, Forestry, Geology, Horticulture, Marine Biology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Veterinary Science, Wildlife Biology, Zoology) - an unrelated degree such as History or Commerce does not qualify you for this specific post, even though it would for most other Group 2 posts.

Group 4 - SSLC baseline, but typing/computer certificates gate several posts

PostQualification

Village Administrative Officer, Junior Assistant (most departments)SSLC pass (or the "Minimum General Educational Qualification" defined in the notification)
Junior Executive (Office), Co-operative Milk Producers' FederationA recognised degree + passed Co-operative Training + Certificate Course in Computer on Office Automation (waived if you already hold a UGC/AICTE-approved Computer Science/IT/Software Engineering degree or diploma)
Junior Assistant cum TypistA recognised degree + Typewriting Higher Grade in one language and Lower Grade in the other (English/Tamil)
TypistMinimum General Educational Qualification + Typewriting (Higher/Senior in Tamil and English, or Higher in one + Lower in the other) + Certificate Course in Computer on Office Automation

The recurring pattern across Group 4's typing-related posts: if you already hold a UGC/AICTE/Directorate-of-Technical-Education-approved qualification in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Applications, Information Technology, Software Engineering or a related computing field, the separate "Certificate Course in Computer on Office Automation" requirement is waived - worth checking carefully if you have any computing-adjacent qualification, since it can save you an extra certification step.

What counts as a valid degree - the documentation chain
TNPSC accepts SSLC, HSC, Diploma, Degree, PG Degree, Integrated PG Degree, Provisional Degree or Provisional Diploma Certificate, or a Consolidated Mark Sheet together with the Degree/Provisional Degree, as proof of educational qualification. If your final certificate had not been issued by the date of notification, a Provisional Certificate or a proof-of-result-publication letter from your Head of Institution/University (in the format prescribed in the notification's Annexure) is accepted instead. Qualifications must have been obtained by passing them in the standard order - SSLC, then HSC/Diploma, then Under Graduate Degree, then Post Graduate Degree - a qualification obtained out of this normal sequence can be questioned during verification.

If you are still completing your degree
Candidates who have written (appeared for) their final year degree exam can still apply for the Preliminary Examination - see our detailed FAQ on final year students and arrears for the exact rule and its Main Examination deadline.

Once your qualification is confirmed for the post you want, our Group 1 Prelims Test Series and free CORE 50 batch cover the shared General Studies syllabus across every group.
What if my qualification is "equivalent" rather than an exact match?
TNPSC notifications generally phrase degree requirements as the named qualification "or its equivalent," and equivalence is decided by the university or the relevant government authority's recognised equivalence rules, not by TNPSC discretion at your convenience. If your degree title differs from the one printed in the notification, obtain a formal equivalence certificate from your university (or check the University Grants Commission's recognised equivalence list) well before certificate verification, rather than assuming it will be accepted informally - "should be equivalent" is not the same as "confirmed equivalent" when your certificates are actually being checked.

Question 12

Can final year students or candidates with arrears apply for TNPSC?

Accepted Answer

Yes, with one important condition, and this rule is one of the most precisely worded parts of any TNPSC notification - worth reading in the Commission's own language rather than a paraphrase. TNPSC's Group 1 Notification (05/2026), clause 4.2.3.3, states:
"The candidates who have written the final year degree examination, may also apply for the preliminary examination, subject to the condition that they should produce the proof of having passed the degree examination while uploading the documents for the main examination, failing which they will not be admitted to the Main Examination."

What this means in practice

You can apply for and sit the Preliminary Examination even if your final year results are not out yet, or even if you currently have live arrears in one or more papers - the only requirement to apply for Prelims is that you have written (appeared for) your final year exam.
By the time you upload documents for the Main Examination, you must have actually passed - every arrear cleared, degree fully completed, certificate or provisional certificate in hand. If you have not passed by that document-upload deadline, you will not be admitted to Main at all, even if you cleared the Prelims cut-off comfortably.
The same notification (clause 4.2.3.4) extends similar logic to final-year M.B.B.S. candidates: those who have passed their final professional medical exam but not yet completed internship may apply to Prelims, provided they submit a certificate confirming the passed exam when admitted to Main, and later produce proof of completed internship at certificate verification.

Does this apply the same way to Group 2 and Group 4?
Yes - this "written the final exam, but not yet passed" provision is standard TNPSC practice, not something unique to Group 1's notification wording. Group 2 and Group 2A's Main Examination and Group 4's single-stage exam both follow the same underlying principle: appearing for your final year/final SSLC-equivalent exam is enough to apply, but you must have actually passed by the relevant document-verification stage for that group. Always check the specific notification you are applying under for its exact wording, since minor phrasing can differ year to year, but the core logic - appear now, prove you passed before the next real gate - holds across all three groups.

What this means for candidates with arrears specifically
If you have arrears (failed one or more papers in an attempt but appeared for the exam), you are in exactly the situation this clause covers - you have "written" the exam even if you have not yet "passed" it. You remain eligible to apply for and sit the Preliminary Examination. Your real deadline is clearing every arrear before the Main Examination document-upload stage, not before you apply. This gives genuine breathing room: many candidates with one or two pending arrears use the gap between Prelims results and the Main Examination call specifically to clear those papers, since TNPSC's stage-by-stage timeline (Prelims results, then Main preparation window, then Main itself) typically spans several months.

Practical advice if you are in your final year right now
Apply for the Prelims as soon as the notification opens - do not wait for your results, since eligibility to apply only requires that you have appeared. Use the months between application and the Preliminary Examination to prepare seriously for both the exam and your remaining academic requirements in parallel. If you clear Prelims, treat clearing your degree (all arrears, final certificate) as an equally hard deadline as your Main Examination study plan - missing either one costs you the attempt entirely.

Start preparing now with our Group 1 Prelims Test Series or the free CORE 50 batch - eligibility timing shouldn't be the reason you delay starting your preparation.
What "proof of having passed" actually needs to look like
TNPSC's own wording requires you to "produce the proof of having passed the degree examination while uploading the documents for the main examination" - in practice this means a provisional certificate or a consolidated mark sheet showing you have cleared every paper, is what candidates use at this stage; the final, formally printed degree certificate (which many universities issue months after results) is not something you would realistically have by the Main Examination document-upload deadline, and the notification's language ("proof of having passed") is written precisely to accommodate that gap - a provisional certificate or passed mark sheet satisfies it. Always read the exact document list in the specific notification's certificate-verification annexure before your own upload date, since the accepted document types are listed there in full.
A caution worth repeating clearly
This eligibility path is genuinely useful, but it is not a safety net if your degree completion is uncertain rather than merely pending paperwork - "written the exam" must mean you have actually appeared for every paper of your final year, not that you intend to appear in a future supplementary attempt. If you are worried about a specific arrear or a supplementary exam schedule that might not conclude before your Main Examination's document-upload date, treat that date (not the exam date itself) as your real deadline and plan your academic calendar around it deliberately, rather than assuming "there's still time" the way many candidates do until it is too late.
This is separate from age relaxation for students
Do not confuse this final-year provision with an age concession - being a final-year student who has "written but not passed" changes nothing about your age eligibility, which is calculated the same way for every candidate as on the notification's fixed reference date. The two rules operate independently: the final-year provision only affects when you must prove your degree is complete, while age eligibility is a separate, non-negotiable check applied at the time of application regardless of your academic status.
In short
Appeared but not yet passed: apply for Prelims without hesitation. Not yet appeared at all for your final year: you are not eligible to apply under this provision, since it specifically requires that you have written the exam, not merely that you are enrolled in your final year.

Question 13

What is the Tamil Eligibility Test in TNPSC exams?

Accepted Answer

Every TNPSC exam tests Tamil, but the format, stage and scoring rules differ enough between groups that treating "the Tamil paper" as one uniform thing is a genuine mistake. This answer covers the exact rules per group, the exemption process for differently-abled English-medium candidates, and why this single paper decides far more of your final outcome than its name suggests.

The three different versions of the Tamil requirement

GroupWhere it appearsFormatQualifying marksCounts toward final rank?

Group 1Main Examination, Paper ISSLC standard, 100 marks, descriptive, 3 hours40 (all categories)No - qualifying gate only
Group 2Main Examination, Paper ISSLC standard, 100 marks, descriptive, 3 hours40 (all categories)No - qualifying gate only
Group 4Single paper, Part ASSLC standard, 100 questions, objective (OMR), part of the same 300-mark paper60/150 (40%)Yes - marks are scored and added to your total

The distinction in the last column matters enormously for how you prioritise study time. For Group 1 and Group 2, the Tamil paper is purely a gate - clear 40 marks and it stops mattering how much higher you scored, since only your General Studies paper decides the merit list. For Group 4, every mark in Part A adds directly to your final score alongside Parts B and C, so scoring well above the 60-mark minimum genuinely helps your rank, not just your eligibility.

What the Tamil paper actually tests
Across all three groups, the content is grammar (இலக்கணம் - agglutination rules/புணர்ச்சி, error correction/பிழை திருத்தம்), vocabulary, comprehension passages, and questions drawn from Tamil literary works - pitched at SSLC standard throughout, meaning the depth of a school-leaving Tamil exam rather than university-level Tamil literature. This is formal, exam-standard Tamil grammar and comprehension, not conversational fluency - a candidate who speaks Tamil fluently at home can still be caught out by grammar-rule questions they never studied formally, and conversely a candidate less confident in spoken Tamil can score well with focused grammar revision.

The English-medium exemption, step by step
Differently-abled candidates (irrespective of the percentage of disability) who have studied only English medium throughout their education can apply for exemption from the Tamil Eligibility Test and instead write General English (SSLC standard) with the identical 40% qualifying requirement. There is no translation component in this English paper. To claim the exemption you must:

Furnish the relevant details in your online application at the time of submission.
Upload a Certificate of Disability in the exact format prescribed in the notification's Annexure, without fail.

Failure to upload this certificate results in rejection of the exemption claim after due process - the exemption is not automatically granted just because you mention it; the documentary proof has to be submitted correctly and on time.

Why treating this paper lightly is a common, costly mistake
Because the syllabus is "only SSLC standard," many aspirants underestimate the preparation this paper actually needs, especially candidates who studied in English medium for their degree and haven't formally revised Tamil grammar since school. For Group 4 specifically, this mistake is doubly expensive: a below-60 score doesn't just cost you Part A marks, it disqualifies your General Studies and Aptitude answers from being evaluated at all (see our Group 4 exam pattern FAQ for the full gating mechanics). Budget real, dedicated revision time for the Tamil/Language paper in every group, proportional to how much it actually affects your outcome - heaviest for Group 4, still meaningful (as a qualifying hurdle) for Group 1 and Group 2.

Every mock test in our test series includes the Tamil paper in the correct format for its group, so you build familiarity with the real exam's bilingual structure from your very first attempt.
Which exam calls it what - and the one genuine exemption
The name and weight of this paper actually shift slightly by exam: it's "Tamil Eligibility Test" (100 marks, descriptive, 40 qualifying) in Group 1 and Group 2/2A Main, but "Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test" (100 questions, 150 marks, objective OMR, 40% qualifying) in Group 4 - in Group 4 alone, once you clear the 40% gate, the marks are added to your final score rather than discarded, so it is not purely qualifying there.
The one documented exemption: differently abled candidates (irrespective of disability percentage) who studied English only in Board/University may opt for a General English (SSLC standard) paper instead, with no translation component, provided they upload the prescribed Certificate of Disability (Annexure format) at the time of application. This is the only exemption path across all three exams' official texts - there is no exemption for candidates who simply studied in an English-medium school without a qualifying disability, no matter how limited their day-to-day Tamil exposure has been.
How to prepare for it specifically
Because the syllabus is SSLC standard, the test rewards focused revision of school-level Tamil grammar (இலக்கணம்), comprehension passages, and translation practice, far more than literary depth. Candidates who studied entirely in English medium should not treat this as a minor formality - budget real weeks, not days, especially for the descriptive-format papers (Group 1, Group 2/2A) where handwriting speed and structured answer-writing under time pressure matter as much as knowing the grammar rules.
Does the Tamil Eligibility Test count in your final rank?
This is the detail most likely to change your preparation priorities, and it depends entirely on which exam you're taking. In Group 1 and Group 2/2A Main, the Tamil Eligibility Test is purely a qualifying gate - clear 40 marks, and the paper's actual score is then discarded; only Papers II onward count toward your rank. In Group 4, by contrast, once you clear the 40% qualifying mark in Part A, those marks are added into your final total alongside Parts B and C - so in Group 4 specifically, doing well beyond just the qualifying mark in Part A genuinely helps your rank, while in Group 1 and Group 2/2A, scoring exactly 40 or well above it makes no difference to your final merit position.

Question 14

TNPSC OTR Login & One Time Registration: Steps, Forgot Password

Accepted Answer

One Time Registration (OTR) is TNPSC's shared candidate-profile system, used across every exam it conducts - Group 1, Group 2/2A, Group 4 and every other TNPSC recruitment. You register your basic details once, and reuse that same profile for every future notification, instead of re-entering your name, date of birth, community, educational history and photograph from scratch each time you apply.

TNPSC OTR Login: How to Sign In and Reset a Forgotten Password

Go to www.tnpscexams.in - the Commission's online application website.
Log in with the User ID and Password you created yourself during One Time Registration. The same login works for every TNPSC application: to apply for an exam, log in and click "APPLY" against that notification.
Forgot them? Use the "FORGOT USER ID" or "FORGOT PASSWORD" option on the login page to retrieve or reset them. TNPSC does not give out User IDs or passwords to anyone, so calling or emailing to ask for them will not help.
After you log in, your OTR details - including your photograph - appear on screen. Check them before you apply; if anything is wrong, correct it through OTR Edit first.

Keep the email ID and mobile number in your OTR active, and never share your email ID, password or mobile number with anyone - the notification says this in so many words. OTR queries are answered only when they come from your registered email ID. For login problems: TNPSC toll-free helpline 1800 419 0958 (working days, 10.00 AM to 5.45 PM) or helpdesk@tnpscexams.in.

The full process, step by step

Visit the Commission's application website, apply.tnpscexams.in (a different domain from the informational site, tnpsc.gov.in, where notifications and syllabi are published).
Complete One Time Registration if you have never registered before - your name (exactly as per your certificates), date of birth, community, educational qualification details, a scanned photograph and signature meeting the prescribed size and format specifications, and your contact details.
If you already have an OTR profile from an earlier exam, skip straight to filling the online application for the current notification - your existing details carry forward automatically.
Fill and submit the exam-specific application, selecting the posts/services you are eligible and wish to apply for, before the last date and time printed in the notification.
Pay the examination fee (where applicable) through the accepted online payment modes before the deadline.
Use the Application Correction Window, which opens for a few days immediately after the last date for submission - this is your only opportunity to fix mistakes in your submitted application (wrong community selected, a typo in a name, an incorrect post choice). Once this window closes, no modification is allowed under any circumstance.

Why your OTR accuracy matters beyond just one exam
Because your OTR profile is reused for every future TNPSC application, an error here doesn't just affect one notification - it follows you into every subsequent exam until you correct it. A wrong date of birth in your OTR, for instance, could cause an age-eligibility mismatch years later for a completely different post, or a wrong community entry could invalidate a reservation claim you are otherwise entitled to. Treat your very first OTR submission with the same care you would give a permanent government record, and review it carefully whenever you start a new application rather than assuming it is still perfectly accurate.

Common documentation pitfalls at the application stage

Photograph and signature not meeting the prescribed size, format or background requirements - a frequent cause of otherwise-valid applications getting flagged.
Community certificate details not matching what's recorded in your OTR profile exactly.
SSLC register number, certificate number, month and year of passing entered incorrectly - especially for candidates who hold more than one SSLC mark sheet (from multiple attempts), who must use the details from their final, passed attempt only.
Missing the Application Correction Window entirely because it is easy to assume the application process is "done" once you've submitted - it opens automatically for a few days right after the last date, and closes permanently after that.

Once your application is submitted correctly, shift your full attention to preparation - our Group 1 Prelims Test Series and free CORE 50 batch are ready whenever you are.
Registration fee and validity
One Time Registration itself carries a one-time fee of Rs.150, paid when you first create your OTR profile - this is separate from, and in addition to, the examination fee you pay for each individual notification you apply under. A successfully completed OTR is valid for five years from the date of registration; once it lapses, you would need to register afresh. Aadhaar linking with your OTR is mandatory - your Aadhaar details are submitted to the Central Identities Data Repository (CIDR) for verification, and you cannot create a new OTR, renew an existing one, or apply for any TNPSC recruitment without it.
Editing your OTR after it's created
You are permitted to edit your OTR details whenever required, by uploading supporting documents for the change through the "OTR Edit" option - but any change must be completed before you submit an online application for a specific notification, since your application auto-fills from whatever your OTR currently holds at the moment you apply. Editing your OTR after submitting an application for a particular notification will not retroactively change that already-submitted application; the edit only reflects in applications you submit afterward. This is precisely why checking your OTR details carefully before starting each new application - not just once, at first registration - is worth the extra few minutes every single time.
Photograph and Signature: The Exact Rules

Photograph.jpg - 20 KB to 50 KB, 200 DPI, 4.5 cm x 3.5 cm (170 x 130 pixels). A colour photo taken in a photo studio against a white background, showing both ears and part of the neck. Your name and the date of photography must be printed at the bottom (the bottom 1.5 cm), and the photo must be taken on or after the date of the notification you are applying for. For One Time Registration itself, the notification asks for a photo taken within the last 3 months.
Signature.jpg - 10 KB to 20 KB, 200 DPI. Draw a 6.0 cm x 2.0 cm box on white paper, sign inside it with a blue or black ink pen, and crop the image to the box.
Photos taken on a mobile phone, selfies and photocopies are not accepted.

Our free TNPSC Photo Compressor and Editor makes both files exactly to these rules on your phone - including the name and date box - and nothing is uploaded.
Details you need ready before you start
Before beginning OTR, keep the following ready rather than searching for them mid-registration: a scanned passport-size photograph and signature meeting the prescribed size, format and file-size limits; your SSLC register number, certificate number, and month and year of passing exactly as printed on your certificate; your community certificate details if you are claiming reservation; your Aadhaar number for mandatory linking; and a personal email ID and mobile number that you will keep active for years, since all official communication from TNPSC - hall tickets, results, interview call letters - reaches you only through these two channels, never by post.
What OTR is not
One Time Registration is not, by itself, an application for any specific post or recruitment - it is only a stored collection of your basic information, referenced automatically whenever you apply. Completing your OTR does not mean you have applied for anything; you must still separately fill and submit the exam-specific online application, choose your posts, and pay the applicable fee for every notification you actually want to be considered under.
Renewing OTR when the five years run out
If your OTR validity lapses before you've finished your TNPSC attempts, you must complete a fresh One Time Registration and pay the Rs.150 fee again - your Aadhaar linking and any documents already verified in your previous OTR do not automatically transfer, so treat the five-year window as a real deadline to track, not a background detail you can forget about. Mark the expiry date somewhere you will actually see it well in advance, since discovering a lapsed OTR right when a notification opens can cost you precious days out of an already tight application window.

For most Group II and Group IIA posts, the age band is 18 to 32 years for candidates not belonging to SC/SC(A)/ST/MBC/DC/BC(OBCM)/BCM - candidates from these reserved communities have no maximum age limit (up to 60 years) for most posts. Notable exceptions:

Group II's Probation Officer needs a minimum age of 22, not 18.
Group II's Sub Registrar, Grade-II needs a minimum age of 20.
Group IIA's Executive Officer, Grade III needs a minimum age of 25, maximum 37 for Others - no maximum for reserved communities.
On top of the standard maximum, age concession goes up to 42 for Persons with Benchmark Disability and 50 for Ex-servicemen (both for Others candidates); Destitute Widows have no maximum age limit for most posts.

Full post-wise age tables - including the extra concession for a Law degree in Deputy Commercial Tax Officer - are in the official notification.

Educational Qualification
Qualification is fixed post-wise. Most posts need a degree from a UGC-recognised university, with several giving preference for a related specialisation or diploma. A few posts need something more specific:

Assistant Section Officer (Post Code 1073): a B.L. (Law) degree.
Assistant Section Officer (Post Code 2201): a Master's degree, or a Bachelor's degree plus B.G.L, or a Bachelor's degree with First Class (relaxed to a plain Bachelor's degree for SC/SC(A)/ST/MBC/DC/BC/BC(M) candidates).
Assistant Section Officer cum Programmer (Post Code 2215): a Master's degree in Computer Application, or a Master's degree in Science (IT/Computer Science).
Assistant (Post Code 1076, Law Department): a B.L. degree.
Assistant (Post Code 1077, Finance): a Bachelor's degree in Commerce, Economics or Statistics.

Did the Date Change?
Yes, once. TNPSC's Annual Planner had listed the Group 2/2A Prelims tentatively for 25 October 2026. Notification 07/2026 confirmed the actual date as 1 November 2026 - one week later than the planner's tentative date. Always trust the notification over the planner: the planner is tentative by design, and the notification is final.

What the Exam Day Looks Like

One single paper of 3 hours (9.30 AM to 12.30 PM), objective type with OMR answer sheet.
It is a Sunday, and one session only - no afternoon batch.
Mobile phones, smart watches and all electronic devices are banned in the exam hall, and safekeeping is not provided - leave them at home.

How Much Preparation Time Is Left?
From the notification date (11 August) to the Prelims (1 November) is about 11 weeks. If you plan backwards from 1 November: keep the last 2 weeks for full-length revision tests and previous year papers, which leaves roughly 9 weeks to finish the syllabus.

These numbers can still change before counselling. TNPSC will give the department-wise list later.

Who Can Apply

Education: for most posts, an SSLC (10th standard) pass is enough. This includes VAO, Junior Assistant, Bill Collector, Revenue Assistant, Tax Collector, Record Clerk and Forest Watcher. Some posts need more:

Junior Assistant (Accounts): a B.Com degree. Some board and corporation posts also need a degree.
Typist and Steno-Typist: a pass in the Government Technical Examination in typewriting or shorthand.
Laboratory Assistant: HSC with science.
Forest Guard with Driving Licence: HSC with science, a driving licence and 3 years of driving experience.

Age (on 1 July 2026): general category 18 to 30; BC, BCM and MBC/DC up to 32; SC, SC(A) and ST up to 35. For VAO you must be at least 21. If you are from a reserved category and studied more than the minimum (for example HSC or a degree), there is no upper age limit for most posts. These limits are 2 years lower than last time (32 / 34 / 37). See the full tables on our Group 4 age limit page.
Tamil: you must know Tamil. You qualify if you studied Tamil as a subject in SSLC, HSC or degree, or studied in Tamil medium, or passed the TNPSC Second Class Language Test in Tamil.
Fee: Rs. 100. Some categories can apply free, but each free application uses up one of your free chances.
How to apply: only online, at www.tnpscexams.in, with your One Time Registration (OTR) login. Your Aadhaar must be linked to your OTR. Your photo must be taken on or after 6 October 2026. Our free TNPSC photo and signature editor makes both files in the right size.

Exam Pattern - One Paper, No Interview

PartSubjectQuestionsMarks

Part ATamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test (set in Tamil only)100150
Part BGeneral Studies (SSLC standard)75150
Part CAptitude and Mental Ability25
Total (3 hours, OMR sheet)200300

You must score at least 60 out of 150 in Part A. If not, Parts B and C will not be checked. The minimum pass mark is 90 out of 300 for everyone. Your rank comes from this one paper. After that come certificate checking and counselling. The two forest posts also have a physical test and a long walk in Chennai (25 km for men and 16 km for women, in 4 hours). The syllabus (code 496) is the same as last time.

What to Do Now

Apply early. Do not wait for 5 November, because the website becomes slow in the last days. Check that your name, date of birth and community match your SSLC certificate.
You have about 13 weeks to the exam. Study Tamil first. It is half the marks, and you need 60 in Tamil for the rest of your paper to be checked.
In the exam, shade an answer for every question. If you do not know, shade (E) "Answer not known". TNPSC cuts 0.5 mark for each question you leave fully blank.

Did the Date Change?
Yes. The TNPSC Annual Planner 2026 gave the Group 4 exam date as 20 December 2026. The notification has fixed it as 10 January 2027. That is 3 weeks later, so you now get about 13 weeks to prepare instead of 10. Always follow the notification. The planner dates are only a plan.

What the Exam Day Looks Like

One paper of 3 hours, on an OMR sheet: 200 questions for 300 marks. Tamil has 100 questions, General Studies 75 and Aptitude 25.
You must score at least 60 out of 150 in Tamil. If not, the rest of your paper will not be checked.
Shade an answer for every question. If you do not know, shade (E) "Answer not known". TNPSC cuts 0.5 mark for each question left fully blank. There is no mark cut for a wrong answer.
Mobile phones, smart watches, smart glasses and all electronic items are not allowed. The centre will not keep them for you, so leave them at home.

A Week-by-Week Plan to 10 January

Now to 5 November: apply first. Then finish Tamil grammar and vocabulary (Units I and II, 40 questions). Study one General Studies unit every week.
November: finish the other General Studies units and the Unit VII Tamil literature list. Practise Aptitude for 30 minutes every day.
December: write a full test every 3 days. Also write previous year Group 4 papers at the real exam time, 9.30 AM to 12.30 PM.
1 to 9 January: do not start new topics. Revise your notes, the Thirukkural chapters in the syllabus and the last 6 months of current affairs.

Group 4 Hall Ticket: When and How
The Group 4 hall ticket is not out yet. TNPSC gives it only online, at www.tnpscexams.in, through your OTR login. It is never sent by post. This year the Group 1 hall ticket came 10 days before its exam, and the Group 2 hall ticket 11 days before (21 October for the 1 November exam). The same gap puts the Group 4 hall ticket around 30 or 31 December 2026. This is a pattern, not a promise. TNPSC sends updates by SMS and email to your registered mobile number and email ID, but says it cannot promise they reach you, so check www.tnpscexams.in yourself from mid December.

Open www.tnpscexams.in.
Log in with your OTR User ID and password, the same login you used to apply.
Choose the hall ticket link for Combined Civil Services Examination - IV (Group IV Services).
Download the PDF, take a clear printout, and keep the PDF on your phone too.

Check these the same day: your name, photo and signature; the exam centre address (plan the journey that day, especially if it is in another town); the date and timing; and every instruction printed on the hall ticket.

Exam Day Timings (Notification 11/2026)

WhatTime

Reach the exam centre8.30 AM (one hour before the exam, for identity checks)
Gates close, be seated in your room9.00 AM (no entry after this)
OMR answer sheet given9.00 AM (short bell)
Question booklet given9.15 AM (short bell)
Exam starts9.30 AM (long bell), then a short bell every hour
10 minutes left12.20 PM (short bell)
Exam ends12.30 PM (long bell)

Use the 30 minutes from 9.00 AM well: fill your OMR sheet details carefully and take a few slow breaths before the paper starts.

What to Carry and What to Leave at Home

Carry only these into the room: your hall ticket printout, a photocopy of one ID (Aadhaar, Passport, Driving Licence, PAN card or Voter ID) and a black ink ball point pen. Take two pens, in case one stops. Keep the original ID with you too: you have to show it if your hall ticket photo is not clear.
Leave at home: mobile phone, smart watch, smart glasses, Bluetooth devices and any other electronic item, even switched off. Also books, notes, loose sheets, a wallet or purse and handbags. The centre will not keep any of these for you.
No food or drinks inside the room: water, tea, coffee and snacks are not allowed. If you need medicine, ask the Chief Invigilator to keep it on the invigilator's table.
Parents wait outside: family members who come with you are not allowed into the exam venue.
Plan the travel: on a Sunday morning, buses can be fewer. Aim to reach by 8.00 AM, so a small delay does not cost you the exam.

OMR Mistakes That Cut Marks

A blank bubble: 0.5 mark is cut for every question with no bubble darkened. If you do not know, darken (E).
No left thumb impression: 0.5 mark is cut if you forget to put your left thumb impression in the box on page 1.
Two bubbles for one question: that answer is not checked at all.
The "Yes / No" circle: if you darkened an answer for all 200 questions, darken "Yes". If not, darken "No" and write how many you left.
Any pen other than a black ink ball point pen is against the rules.

Keep your hall ticket safely after the exam. TNPSC asks for it again later, and no duplicate is given.

Plan Your 3 Hours
200 questions in 180 minutes is less than a minute a question, so go in with a plan. This is the order we suggest to our students:

PartQuestionsTime

Tamil (Part A)10065 minutes
General Studies (Part B)7560 minutes
Aptitude (Part C)2535 minutes
Check the OMR sheetAll 20020 minutes

Tamil first: you need 60 out of 150 in Tamil, or the rest of your paper is not checked. Answer it while your mind is fresh.
Skip and come back: if a question takes more than a minute, mark it in the question booklet and move on.
Leave no bubble blank: in the last 20 minutes, shade (E) "Answer not known" for anything still empty. A fully blank question costs 0.5 mark; a wrong answer costs nothing.

Question 20

What type of questions are asked in TNPSC exams?

Accepted Answer

TNPSC asks two broad kinds of questions: objective multiple-choice questions (in every Preliminary exam, the whole of Group 4, and Group 2A Mains) and descriptive written questions (in Group 1 and Group 2 Mains, and the Tamil Eligibility Test). Every objective paper gives you five options per question with no negative marking, and every stage's exact format is fixed in the official Scheme of Examination, so nothing about the format should surprise you on exam day.

Objective questions: the formats you will actually face
Within the multiple-choice format, TNPSC uses several recurring question styles. Knowing them changes how you revise, because each style punishes a different kind of half-knowledge:

Direct single-fact questions - "Which article of the Constitution deals with X?" One fact, one answer. These reward straightforward recall from school books.
Statement-based questions - two or three statements followed by "Which of the above is/are correct?" These have become the modern TNPSC's favourite style, and they punish vague familiarity: you must know each statement precisely, not just recognise the topic.
Match the following - two lists (for example, leaders and movements, or crops and regions) to be paired. One confident pairing often unlocks the whole answer by elimination.
Chronological ordering - arrange events, rulers or acts in time order, common in History units.
Assertion and Reason - a claim plus an explanation, where you judge both truth and the logical link between them.
Odd one out and pairing questions - especially in the Tamil and Language papers, testing vocabulary and classification.

Descriptive questions: what Mains actually asks you to write
Group 1 Mains (Papers II, III and IV) and Group 2 Mains Paper II are fully descriptive. The Group 2 Mains scheme shows exactly how structured this is: nine compulsory 10-mark answers of about 100 words each, three more 10-mark answers from the Tamil Society unit, and twelve 15-mark answers of about 200 words each - in total 24 written answers, roughly 3,600 words, inside 180 minutes. Group 1 Mains carries three 250-mark papers of the same descriptive nature at Degree standard. Descriptive answers are marked on content and structure: a definition or context line, the core points (often best as short labelled points rather than one long paragraph), and a closing line that answers the question asked.
The Tamil Eligibility Test, compulsory before Group 1 and Group 2/2A Mains evaluation, is descriptive in a different way: translation from Tamil to English and English to Tamil, precis writing, comprehension, expansion of a brief note, an essay on Thirukkural themes, and official letter writing - all at SSLC standard, needing 40 marks out of 100 to qualify.

Question standard by exam: same topics, different depth

ExamFormatGeneral Studies standard

Group 1 PrelimsObjective, 200 questions, OMRDegree (Aptitude at SSLC)
Group 1 MainsDescriptive, 3 GS papers + Tamil Eligibility TestDegree
Group 2/2A PrelimsObjective, 200 questions, OMRDegree GS, SSLC Aptitude and Language
Group 2 MainsDescriptive, 24 answers in 3 hoursDegree
Group 2A MainsObjective, 200 questions (150 GS + 50 Reasoning)Degree GS, SSLC Reasoning
Group 4Objective, 200 questions, single paperSSLC throughout

"Degree standard" does not mean questions from outside standard sources - a large share of questions across every group traces to Samacheer Kalvi school book content. The standard shows up as precision: a Group 4 question may ask which river flows through a district, while a Group 2 question asks you to judge three statements about the same river system.

Where the questions come from
Every unit of every official TNPSC syllabus ends with the words "Current affairs" - so alongside static school-book material, expect questions on recent schemes, appointments, awards, reports and events, woven into each subject rather than asked as a separate section. The bilingual question papers (Tamil and English at every stage, with the English version final in case of doubt) mean you can attempt each question in whichever language reads clearer to you at that moment.

A mentor's note on practising by question type
Most aspirants practise by topic; toppers also practise by question style. After every mock test, sort your errors into two piles: "did not know the fact" and "knew the topic, lost to the format" - misread statements, rushed matches, wrong elimination. The second pile shrinks fast with targeted practice, and in a no-negative-marking exam where everyone attempts all 200 questions, format discipline is often the real gap between two candidates who studied the same books. Practise with our bilingual test series, which mirrors these exact question styles, and read the full stage-wise structure in the Group 1 syllabus, Group 2/2A syllabus and Group 4 syllabus pages.

Related doubts, answered briefly
Is there negative marking for wrong answers? No, at no stage of any TNPSC exam - attempt everything.
Are the questions the same in Tamil and English? Yes, every paper is set bilingually except parts that are language-specific by nature (like Part A of Group 4, set in Tamil only).
Does TNPSC repeat previous year questions? Exact repeats are not guaranteed, but the same topics and styles recur cycle after cycle because the syllabus and sources are fixed - which is why solving previous papers is high-yield practice.
How many options per question? Objective papers give five options, which slightly lowers blind-guess odds but raises the value of elimination skills.
How the question paper is physically structured
Objective papers are answered on OMR sheets (Optical Mark Recognition), where you shade the bubble for your chosen option in blue or black ball point pen - except Group 2A Mains, which is a Computer Based Test where you click your answer on screen. TNPSC states plainly that the CBT needs no computer knowledge beyond basic mouse use, and a practice session is provided before the real exam. Descriptive papers are written in answer booklets, and legible handwriting with clear structure earns marks that identical content in a wall of text loses - examiners can only credit what they can find.
A worked example of the statement-question trap
Consider a typical statement question: "1. The Finance Commission is appointed every five years. 2. Its recommendations are binding on the government. Which is/are correct?" A candidate with surface familiarity picks "both" because both sentences sound official. A prepared candidate knows the second statement is wrong - recommendations are advisory - and answers "1 only". This is exactly the gap between reading a chapter once and revising it with precision, and it is why the modern paper rewards fewer sources studied deeply over many sources skimmed. When you revise, convert every important fact into a true/false pair in your notes; you will be manufacturing your own statement questions before the examiner does.

Question 21

How many questions will be asked in TNPSC Group 1?

Accepted Answer

TNPSC Group 1 Prelims has exactly 200 questions - 175 General Studies questions (Degree standard) and 25 Aptitude and Mental Ability questions (SSLC standard) - carrying 300 marks in a single 3-hour objective paper. The Main examination that follows is not question-count based in the same way: it is four descriptive papers (a 100-mark Tamil Eligibility Test plus three General Studies papers of 250 marks each), followed by a 100-mark interview.

The exact unit-wise split of the 200 Prelims questions

UnitSubjectQuestions

IGeneral Science10
IIGeography of India10
IIIHistory, Culture of India and Indian National Movement25
IVIndian Polity40
VIndian Economy and Development Administration in Tamil Nadu50
VIHistory, Culture, Heritage and Socio-Political Movements in Tamil Nadu40
-Aptitude (15) and Reasoning (10)25
Total200

Read that table like a strategist, not a student: Units V, IV and VI alone carry 130 questions - about 65% of the whole paper. A candidate who masters Economy with Tamil Nadu development, Polity and Tamil Nadu history has already covered two of every three questions before touching Science or Geography.
One official caveat worth knowing: the notification itself states this unit-wise distribution is indicative, and the Commission may marginally increase or decrease a unit's count. Plan around the weightage, but never skip a unit entirely.

Marks, time and the pace you actually need
200 questions in 180 minutes means 54 seconds per question on average. In practice, direct recall questions take 15 to 20 seconds, which banks time for statement-based and matching questions that need a full minute or more. There is no negative marking, so the correct plan is to answer all 200: mark the certain ones fast, flag the doubtful ones, and return with your banked time. The minimum qualifying marks are 90 out of 300 for SC, SC(A), ST, MBC/DC, BC(OBCM) and BCM candidates and 120 for Others - but qualifying marks only make you eligible; the real cut-off is set by competition, so your target should be comfortably above it.

What comes after the 200 questions: the Mains structure

StageFormatMarks

Mains Paper I - Tamil Eligibility TestDescriptive, SSLC standard100 (qualifying at 40, not ranked)
Mains Papers II, III, IV - General Studies I, II, IIIDescriptive, Degree standard, 3 hours each250 each = 750
InterviewOral100
Final ranking total850

Note the relationship between the stages: your Prelims score - however high - is discarded after screening. Roughly 20 times the number of vacancies are admitted to Mains, and the final rank is built entirely from the 850 marks of Mains plus Interview. So the 200 Prelims questions decide whether you continue, and the Mains answers decide where you finish.

How this compares with the other TNPSC exams
Every major TNPSC exam uses a 200-question objective paper, but the internal split differs sharply: Group 2/2A Prelims gives only 75 questions to General Studies and 100 to a Language part; Group 4 gives 100 of its 200 questions to a scoring Tamil test. Group 1 is the only exam whose Prelims is almost entirely General Studies - which is exactly why its preparation is the deepest, and why Group 1 preparation transfers so well to every other group. See the full stage-by-stage details in our Group 1 syllabus page and compare with the Group 2/2A and Group 4 pages.

A mentor's advice on using these numbers
Turn the question counts into a weekly time budget. If Unit V is 50 questions and Unit I is 10, your revision hours should reflect something close to that 5:1 ratio - not equal chapters per week. And practise with full-length 200-question tests early: the skill of holding concentration for 180 minutes is trained, not assumed, and it routinely moves final scores more than one extra book ever does. Our Group 1 Prelims Test Series is scheduled in exactly this weightage order.

Related doubts, answered briefly
How many questions must I answer correctly to clear Prelims? Each question carries 1.5 marks, so the 90/120 qualifying line equals 60/80 correct answers - but real cut-offs sit well above qualifying marks, so aim much higher.
Are all 200 questions compulsory? Nothing forces you to answer, but with no negative marking, leaving any question blank is simply surrendered marks.
How many questions in the Group 1 Mains papers? Mains is descriptive - marks are fixed (250 per GS paper), and the number of questions per paper is set by that cycle's question paper design rather than a fixed count like Prelims.
Is the interview counted? Yes - 100 marks, added to the 750 Mains marks for the final 850-mark ranking.
The numbers behind the numbers: what 200 questions really filter
In the 2026 cycle, Notification 05/2026 lists 26 vacancies against a statewide applicant pool, and about 20 times the vacancies progress to Mains. Those two numbers together explain the exam's character: the 200 Prelims questions exist to compress an enormous field down to a few hundred serious contenders. That compression is why two habits matter more than any book: revising the top three units repeatedly (they alone are 130 questions), and rehearsing the full 200-question format until your accuracy in hour three matches your accuracy in hour one. Candidates lose more marks to fatigue and format errors in the last 50 questions than to any genuinely unknown topic.
A quick self-test to calibrate where you stand
Take any previous Group 1 paper and attempt only Units IV and V questions - 90 questions' worth. If you clear 70 percent, your foundation is Mains-ready and your remaining work is breadth and current affairs. Below 50 percent, resist the urge to buy more books; return to the Samacheer chapters for those two units and rebuild from the source most questions are actually set from. This one diagnostic, repeated monthly, tells you more about your Prelims readiness than any amount of general reading.

Question 22

Is there negative marking in TNPSC exams?

Accepted Answer

No. There is no negative marking in any TNPSC examination - Group 1, Group 2, Group 2A or Group 4. This is confirmed directly from the official notifications: none of the Scheme of Examination sections in the Group 1 (05/2026), Group 2/2A (8/2024) or Group 4 (07/2025) notifications mention any penalty for a wrong answer anywhere. Marks come only from questions you answer correctly - a wrong answer costs you nothing beyond simply not earning that mark.

How this compares to other competitive exams
This is a genuine, meaningful difference from exams like UPSC Civil Services, which deducts a fraction of the mark value for every wrong answer in its objective papers. Aspirants who split their preparation between TNPSC and UPSC (a common pattern, since much of the General Studies syllabus overlaps) sometimes carry UPSC's "guess carefully, or skip" instinct into a TNPSC exam room without realising the incentive structure has completely flipped - in a TNPSC paper, an educated guess (or even a blind guess with no penalty) can only help your score, never hurt it.

The strategic implication: attempt every question
Since there is nothing to lose from a wrong answer, the mathematically correct approach in every TNPSC objective paper is to attempt all 200 questions rather than leaving any blank, provided you use your remaining time sensibly (spend it on questions you can reason toward an answer rather than on ones you have zero information about). Even a random guess among five options carries roughly a 20% chance of being correct at zero cost if wrong - leaving a question blank guarantees zero marks with certainty, which is strictly worse. Build this into your exam-day time management: reserve the last 10-15 minutes specifically to fill in every remaining blank rather than rechecking questions you have already answered.

The one place a low score still costs you - qualifying marks, not negative marking
"No negative marking" does not mean there is no way to lose marks strategically. Two mechanisms still apply, and they are easy to confuse with negative marking even though they work differently:

Qualifying cut-offs: Prelims and the Tamil Eligibility Test both have a minimum qualifying mark. Score below it, and your paper (or in Group 1/2's case, your subsequent Main papers) simply doesn't count toward selection - this is a threshold effect, not a per-question penalty.
Group 4's gating rule: score below 40% in Part A (Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test), and Parts B and C are never evaluated at all, regardless of how many questions you answered correctly there. See our Group 4 exam pattern FAQ for the full mechanics.

Neither of these is "negative marking" in the technical sense (nothing is subtracted from a score you have already earned), but both mean that simply "not scoring negative" is not the same as "every strategy is risk-free." Attempt every question freely within a paper, but still respect the qualifying thresholds that gate your progress to the next stage.

Practise this attempt-everything mindset in a real test environment with our Group 1 Prelims Test Series or free CORE 50 batch - both run under exam-identical timing so you build the right instincts before the real day.
A worked example, so the arithmetic is completely clear
Take a Group 4 Prelims-equivalent paper: 200 questions, each worth on average 1.5 marks (300 marks / 200 questions, though the actual per-part weighting differs slightly). Suppose you attempt all 200 and get 140 right, 60 wrong. Your score is based purely on the 140 correct answers - the 60 wrong ones simply contribute zero, exactly as if you had left them blank. Now compare two candidates who both know the same 140 answers for certain: Candidate A also guesses on the remaining 60 (getting, say, 12 right by chance at roughly 20% odds with four options); Candidate B leaves all 60 blank out of caution. Candidate A ends up with marks for 152 correct answers; Candidate B ends up with marks for exactly 140. Guessing strictly could not have hurt Candidate A - at absolute worst, all 60 guesses are wrong and both candidates end up level.

Why this differs so sharply from UPSC's system
In UPSC's objective papers, a wrong answer typically costs a fraction of that question's mark value as a penalty - so a UPSC candidate genuinely can end up worse off than if they had left a question blank, and "should I guess?" is a real strategic question there. In every TNPSC exam, that calculation simply does not exist: the only way to end up with fewer marks is to answer fewer questions correctly, and leaving a question blank is mathematically identical to answering it wrong, except blank guarantees zero while a guess has a real chance of being right.
Does this ever change between notifications?
TNPSC's absence of negative marking has been consistent across every recent notification checked for this answer (Group 1 05/2026, Group 2/2A 8/2024, Group 4 07/2025), but the Scheme of Examination section is exactly where any future change would be announced, since it is the section that defines marking rules for that specific recruitment. Make a habit of actually reading this section in every new notification you apply under, rather than assuming it will always match what you read in a previous cycle - notification-specific rules always take precedence over general practice from past exams.
A quick way to remember this on exam day
If you find yourself hesitating over a question you're genuinely unsure about, the rule of thumb is simple: eliminate whatever options you can rule out with partial knowledge, then commit to your best remaining guess rather than leaving the bubble blank. This applies to every TNPSC objective paper across Group 1, Group 2, Group 2A and Group 4 - Prelims, Main, and every Part within Group 4's single paper. The only exception worth remembering is the qualifying-mark thresholds covered above, which reward accuracy on the questions you're confident about first, before you spend time on genuine guesses.

Question 23

What is the TNPSC Group 1 exam pattern (Prelims and Mains)?

Accepted Answer

Group 1 (Combined Civil Services Examination - I) runs across three stages - Preliminary Examination, Main Examination, and Interview - and each stage has its own detailed structure. This answer covers the exact pattern from Notification 05/2026, plus the unit-wise syllabus breakdown behind the Prelims paper, so you know precisely how many questions come from each subject.

Preliminary Examination - screening only

SubjectStandardQuestions

General StudiesDegree175
Aptitude and Mental AbilitySSLC25

200 questions, 300 marks, 3 hours, objective (OMR), bilingual (Tamil and English). Qualifying marks: 120 for Others, 90 for SC/SC(A)/ST/MBC/DC/BC(OBCM)/BCM. Prelims marks are used only to shortlist candidates for the Main Examination - they do not carry forward into your final merit score.

Unit IIGeography of India10
Unit IIIHistory, Culture of India and Indian National Movement25
Unit IVIndian Polity40
Unit VIndian Economy and Development Administration in Tamil Nadu50
Unit VIHistory, Culture, Heritage and Socio-Political Movements in Tamil Nadu40

Units V, IV and VI together account for 130 of the 175 General Studies questions - 75% of the paper - which is exactly why a strong candidate front-loads Indian Economy/TN Development Administration, Indian Polity and TN History/Culture/Heritage before touching the lighter units (Science and Geography carry only 10 questions each). The Aptitude and Mental Ability section (25 questions, SSLC standard) splits into Aptitude (15 questions: simplification, percentage, HCF/LCM, ratio and proportion, simple and compound interest, area, volume, time and work) and Reasoning (10 questions: logical reasoning, puzzles, dice, visual reasoning, alpha-numeric reasoning, number series).

Main Examination + Interview

PaperSubjectMarksNotes

Paper ITamil Eligibility Test100Descriptive, qualifying only (40 marks) - not added to the final total
Paper IIGeneral Studies I - Modern History of India and Indian Culture250Objective, bilingual - these three papers (750 marks) + Interview (100) = 850 total
Paper IIIGeneral Studies II - Indian Polity, Ethics and Integrity, Tamil Society - Culture and Heritage250
Paper IVGeneral Studies III - Geography, Indian Economy and Current Economic Trends250
Interview-100

Papers II-IV are evaluated only if you clear the Paper I qualifying mark, and appearance in all Main papers plus the Interview is compulsory - miss even one and you are dropped from the selection regardless of your marks in the others. Your final rank is decided entirely by Papers II, III and IV plus the Interview (850 marks) - the Prelims score and the Tamil Eligibility Test score play no role in the final merit calculation, they are pure qualifying gates.

Where the Main Examination syllabus goes deeper
The three General Studies Main papers expand well beyond the Prelims units into dedicated territory: Paper II covers Modern History and Indian Culture in depth; Paper III adds a full Ethics and Integrity unit and a Tamil Society - Culture and Heritage unit not tested the same way at Prelims; Paper IV covers Indian Economy's current trends and the impact of the global economy on India, alongside Geography. This means Prelims-level revision is necessary but not sufficient for Main - candidates who only revise their Prelims notes for Mains typically underperform on the descriptive-depth questions Mains actually asks.

Turning the pattern into a study strategy
Because Prelims and Mains are scored completely independently (Prelims marks never carry into your final rank), the smartest sequencing is: clear Prelims comfortably first with unit-weighted revision (spend roughly your revision time in proportion to each unit's question count - Units V, IV, VI get the bulk of it), then shift fully into Mains-depth material once you know you have qualified. Many aspirants make the mistake of trying to prepare Mains-level depth from day one "just in case," which spreads their limited time too thin before Prelims and risks missing the qualifying cut-off altogether - qualify first, then go deep.
A second common mistake: treating the Tamil Eligibility Test (Paper I of Mains) as unimportant because it doesn't add to your final score. It is still a hard gate - score below 40 and your General Studies papers are never evaluated, no matter how well you wrote them. Budget real preparation time for it rather than assuming your everyday Tamil is automatically sufficient for the exam's specific descriptive format.

Our Group 1 Prelims Test Series is built directly around this exact weightage - the highest-scoring units (V, IV, VI) come first in the schedule, and are revisited through dedicated revision tests before the exam.
What happens after the Main Examination: Interview and medical exam
Once Papers II, III and IV are evaluated, candidates are shortlisted for Interview at a fixed multiple of the vacancies in each reservation group - two times the vacancies where five or more posts are reserved for a group, three times where the group has four or fewer vacancies. The Interview itself carries 100 marks with no minimum qualifying mark, and its stated purpose is to judge the candidate's overall suitability for the service, not to re-test subject knowledge already covered in the written papers. Candidates provisionally admitted for Interview are also required to undergo a medical examination, which is conducted only after the Interview is completed; the post's final eligibility is decided only once the Medical Board's report is available. There is no supplemental list for Interview - if you are not called in the numbers described above, there is no second window that cycle.
One detail that trips up otherwise well-prepared candidates: appearance in the Interview on the notified date and time is compulsory, and requests to change the date or time are not entertained. Missing your slot, for any reason, removes you from selection for that recruitment regardless of your written marks.
One more number worth planning around: the Commission admits roughly 20 times the number of vacancies to the Main Examination (with reservation-group ties admitted beyond that ratio too), so Prelims is a real screening filter, not a formality - treat qualifying comfortably above the cut-off, not just at it, as your actual Prelims target.

Question 24

TNPSC Group 2 Exam Pattern: 200-Question Prelims + Separate Mains

Accepted Answer

Group 2 and Group 2A share one Common Preliminary Examination, then split into separate Main Examinations with genuinely different formats - Group 2's Main is a classic paper-based descriptive-plus-objective combination, while Group 2A's Main includes a Computer Based Test. This answer covers the exact current pattern - the Common Prelims from Notification 8/2024 and the Group 2A Mains as revised under the 2025 scheme - plus what the CBT actually involves for candidates who have never taken one before.

Common Preliminary Examination (single paper, shared by both)

SubjectStandardQuestions

General StudiesDegree75
Aptitude and Mental AbilitySSLC25
Language (General Tamil or General English)-100

200 questions total, 300 marks, 3 hours, objective (OMR). Qualifying mark is 90 for every community alike - Group 2/2A is one of the few TNPSC stages where the qualifying mark does not differ by reservation category. Notice how much smaller the General Studies share is here (75 questions) compared to Group 1's 175 - Group 2/2A's Prelims leans more heavily on the Language paper (100 questions), which rewards strong Tamil or English comprehension as much as subject knowledge.

Group 2 Main Examination (non-interview posts)

PaperSubjectStandardMarksType

Paper ITamil Eligibility TestSSLC100Descriptive, qualifying only (40 marks)
Paper IIGeneral StudiesDegree300Objective, qualifying 90

There is no interview for these posts - Paper II's General Studies marks alone decide the final merit list, once Paper I's qualifying bar is cleared. This makes Group 2's Main a single, high-stakes 300-mark objective paper covering the full Degree-standard General Studies syllabus (Constitution/Polity/Governance with Tamil Nadu-specific weightage, Geography and Environment of Tamil Nadu, and the broader units shared with Group 1's syllabus family).

Group 2A Main Examination (a different service, with a Computer Based Test)

PaperSubjectStandardQuestionsMode

Paper ITamil Eligibility TestSSLC-Descriptive (paper-based)
Paper II, Part AGeneral StudiesDegree150Computer Based Test (CBT)
Paper II, Part BGeneral Intelligence and ReasoningSSLC50

Under the 2025 revision of the Group 2A Mains scheme, Paper II is 200 objective questions in two parts: 150 General Studies questions across five units (with a heavily Tamil Nadu-focused syllabus, including a dedicated Administration of States unit) and 50 General Intelligence and Reasoning questions. The earlier separate Language section no longer appears in this scheme.
The CBT is TNPSC's computer-screen version of an objective exam - five options per question are displayed on screen, and you select your answer with a mouse click rather than shading an OMR bubble. Importantly, the notification is explicit that no computer knowledge or typing skill is required: basic mouse operation is all that's needed, and TNPSC provides a mock test session before the real exam specifically so first-time CBT candidates can get comfortable with the interface. If you have only ever taken paper-based OMR exams before, do not let the CBT format itself worry you - the subject preparation is identical to any other objective paper, only the answering mechanism changes.

Why the same "General Studies" label means two different things here
A subtlety worth flagging: Group 2's Main Paper II General Studies is a single unified 300-mark descriptive paper, while Group 2A's Paper II General Studies is 150 of its 200 CBT questions, sitting alongside a separate 50-question Reasoning part. If you are preparing for both services, don't assume identical time allocation across subjects - Group 2A specifically rewards strong reasoning ability in a way Group 2 does not test at all.

Why the Language paper deserves real preparation time
Because the Language section is 100 of the 200 Prelims questions - half the paper - candidates who only prepare General Studies and Aptitude are leaving half their score on the table. General Tamil at this level tests grammar, vocabulary, literary passages and comprehension at a standard beyond conversational fluency; General English similarly tests grammar and comprehension rather than basic spoken English. Treat the Language paper as a full subject to prepare, not something your everyday fluency will automatically cover, especially if your schooling was in a different medium than the paper you intend to attempt.
A related point that catches out many aspirants moving from Group 4 preparation to Group 2/2A: Group 4's Tamil paper (Part A) is a separate scoring test from the Language paper here - Group 2/2A's "Language" option lets you choose Tamil or English, while the Tamil Eligibility Test at the Main stage is a different, additional, qualifying-only paper everyone must clear regardless of which Language option they picked at Prelims.

Our Legacy Batch and free CORE 50 cover the shared General Studies syllabus across Group 1, 2, 2A and 4, so the same preparation carries across whichever Main Examination you eventually sit.
Group 2 vs Group 2A: the same Prelims, two different Main patterns
Group 2 and Group 2A share one Common Preliminary Examination (200 questions, 300 marks: 75 General Studies, 25 Aptitude and Mental Ability, 100 Language - General Tamil or General English), but their Main Examinations differ in both format and mode:

Group 2 MainGroup 2A Main

Paper ITamil Eligibility Test - 100 marks, descriptive, qualifying (40 marks)Tamil Eligibility Test - 100 marks, descriptive, qualifying (40 marks)
Paper IIGeneral Studies - 300 marks, descriptive, qualifying 90 marksGeneral Studies (150 Qs) + General Intelligence and Reasoning (50 Qs) - 200 questions, Computer Based Test (2025 scheme)
InterviewNoneNone

This is the single biggest structural difference aspirants overlook: Group 2 Main Paper II is a descriptive, pen-and-paper General Studies paper, while Group 2A Main Paper II is an objective Computer Based Test with two parts: General Studies and Reasoning. Neither Group 2 nor Group 2A has an Interview stage at all - your rank is decided purely by Main Examination marks, which makes writing practice (for Group 2) or CBT speed and accuracy (for Group 2A) the deciding preparation skill, not interview readiness.
Certificate verification happens before Main, not after
Following the same pattern used across TNPSC's exams, onscreen certificate verification for Group 2/2A is conducted before candidates are admitted to the Main Examination - not at the end of the process. There is no supplemental list published for candidates who are rejected at this stage or who fail to upload the required documents in time, which means a document error here can cost you the Main Examination attempt entirely, independent of your Prelims marks. Keep every certificate (community, educational, date of birth proof) ready and correctly matching your OTR details well before this stage arrives, rather than scrambling once the verification window opens.

Question 25

What is the TNPSC Group 4 exam pattern?

Accepted Answer

Group 4 (VAO, Junior Assistant, Typist, Steno-Typist, Field Assistant and similar posts) is the only TNPSC group with a genuinely single-stage selection - no separate Mains, no interview, one 200-question paper decides everything. This answer covers the exact pattern from Notification 07/2025, the gating rule that catches out a large share of candidates every year, and the posts this pattern actually covers.

The single paper, part by part

PartSubjectStandardQuestionsMarks

Part ATamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring TestSSLC100150
Part BGeneral StudiesSSLC75150 (combined)
Part CAptitude and Mental AbilitySSLC25

200 questions total, 300 marks, 3 hours, objective (OMR). Part A is set in Tamil only; Parts B and C are bilingual (Tamil and English). Note that every part is SSLC standard - unlike Group 1 and Group 2/2A, there is no Degree-standard component anywhere in the Group 4 paper, which is exactly why the baseline qualification is SSLC rather than a degree.

The gating rule that costs candidates the whole paper
Part B and C answer sheets are evaluated only if you score at least 40% (60 out of 150 marks) in Part A, the Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test. Score below that threshold, and your General Studies and Aptitude answers are never evaluated at all, however well you answered them - you simply score zero on Parts B and C regardless of your actual performance there. This single rule is responsible for a meaningful share of "good preparation, poor result" outcomes every year: candidates who spend all their preparation time on General Studies and Aptitude, treating the Tamil paper as an afterthought since it's "just SSLC standard," sometimes discover on results day that their Part A score fell just short of 60 - and the marks they earned in Parts B and C never counted at all.
Because all three parts' marks (up to 300 total) are added together for your final rank once Part A is cleared, there is no way to compensate for a low Part A score with a high Part B/C score - the qualifying bar must be crossed first, then everything adds up.

Which posts this pattern covers
Group 4 recruits for a wide spread of clerical, revenue and support posts across Tamil Nadu government departments and public sector undertakings, all sitting the same 200-question paper: Village Administrative Officer (VAO), Junior Assistant (in many departments including Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation, Forest Plantation Corporation), Junior Revenue Inspector, Junior Executive (Office) at the Co-operative Milk Producers' Federation, Junior Assistant cum Typist, Typist, Steno-Typist Grade III, Personal Clerk, Assistant, and Field Assistant, among others. A handful of these posts (Typist, Steno-Typist, some Junior Assistant roles) carry additional typing/shorthand/computer-certificate qualification requirements on top of the written exam - see our FAQ on educational qualification for the exact certificate needed per post.

Physical standards for Forest posts
Forest Guard, Forest Guard with Driving Licence, Forest Watcher and Forest Watcher (Tribal Youth) sit the same written paper as every other Group 4 post, but additionally require a Physical Standards Test and, for some categories, an Endurance Test (a supervised walk covering set distances), conducted separately by the Forest Department after the written exam. If you are targeting a Forest post specifically, factor physical fitness preparation into your plan alongside the written paper.

Sample question style, so you know what to expect
Part A (Tamil) tests grammar (புணர்ச்சி, பிழை திருத்தம்), literary passages and comprehension at SSLC standard - not conversational Tamil, but the kind of formal grammar and literature questions asked in a school Tamil final exam. Part B (General Studies) covers the same six-unit family used across TNPSC (Science, Geography, History and National Movement, Polity, Economy and TN Development, TN History/Culture/Heritage), simply pitched at SSLC depth rather than Degree depth. Part C (Aptitude) covers basic arithmetic and reasoning at a level most candidates who completed SSLC mathematics can handle with practice, without needing degree-level quantitative methods.
Because the standard is SSLC throughout, Group 4 preparation genuinely can be built almost entirely from Samacheer Kalvi school textbooks (6th to 12th standard) rather than external competitive-exam reference books - see our dedicated book list FAQ for what to add on top of the school syllabus.

Our free CORE 50 batch is built directly around Group 4's highest-weightage school-textbook lessons, with a bilingual test for every lesson - exactly matching this SSLC-standard, bilingual paper structure.
Group 4 is a single-stage exam - no separate Mains, no Interview
Unlike Group 1 (three stages) and Group 2/2A (two stages), Group 4 selection is decided entirely by one written examination split into three parts within the same paper:

PartSubjectQuestionsMarks

Part ATamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test (Tamil only)100150
Part BGeneral Studies (Tamil and English)75150 combined
Part CAptitude and Mental Ability (Tamil and English)25

Total: 200 questions, 300 marks, 3 hours, objective, OMR-based. Parts B and C are evaluated only if you clear 40% (60 marks) in Part A, and your final rank is the sum of all three parts taken together - there is no separate qualifying-only paper here the way Group 1's Interview or Group 2's Tamil Eligibility Test work; Part A's marks count fully toward your rank once you clear the 40% gate.
Differently abled candidates (regardless of disability percentage) who studied English only in Board/University may opt for a General English (SSLC standard) paper instead of the Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test, provided the disability certificate is uploaded with the application - missing that upload means the exemption claim is rejected outright.
After the written exam, Group 4 selection moves directly to certificate verification and (for posts that require it, such as Forest Guard/Watcher) a physical standards and endurance test - there is no Interview stage anywhere in the Group 4 process.
Group 4's syllabus for the written examination is published as a separate annexure to each notification, and while its content overlaps heavily with the same six-unit General Studies structure used in Group 1 and Group 2/2A, the standard is set at SSLC level rather than Degree level for General Studies here - meaning the depth expected is genuinely lighter, even though the topic list looks similar on paper.

Notification 05/2026 originally set the Preliminary Examination for 6 September 2026. Addendum No. 5A/2026 (dated 16.07.2026) officially postponed it to 27 September 2026, keeping the same 9.30 AM - 12.30 PM time slot, while explicitly stating that every other condition in the original notification remains unchanged.

Why exam dates sometimes move, and how to track it yourself
TNPSC issues addenda (numbered supplements to the original notification, such as "5A", "8B", "8C") whenever something in the original notification needs correcting or rescheduling - a vacancy count revision, an eligibility clarification, or, as happened here, a date postponement. These addenda are legally binding updates to the notification and always take precedence over the original text for whatever they cover. The safest habit: before finalising your study schedule around any exam date, check TNPSC's official site (tnpsc.gov.in) or your registered mobile/email for addendum notices, rather than relying on a single date you saw once, since - exactly as happened with this Group 1 cycle - the first published date is not always the final one.

What typically happens between stages
Based on TNPSC's established pattern across recent cycles, Preliminary Examination results are usually announced some weeks after the exam, followed by a Main Examination preparation window before that stage is conducted, and the Main Examination date itself is announced only after Preliminary results are declared - it is never fixed in the original notification. If you clear Prelims, expect a real but not unlimited runway to prepare for Main; use the gap deliberately rather than assuming it will be long.

Our Group 1 Prelims Test Series is scheduled around this confirmed 27 September date, with the full 22-test calendar timed to finish with adequate revision buffer before exam day.
What this notification (05/2026) is actually recruiting for
Notification 05/2026 is for 26 vacancies (tentative, subject to revision until Preliminary results are published) across five Group 1 posts:

PostServiceVacancies

Deputy CollectorTamil Nadu Civil Service12*
Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Taxes)Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes Service2
Deputy Registrar of Co-operative SocietiesTamil Nadu Co-operative Service3**
District RegistrarTamil Nadu Registration Service8
Assistant Commissioner of LabourTamil Nadu Labour Service1

* including backlog vacancy. ** including shortfall vacancies. Total: 26.
Fee and exam centre rules for this cycle
The Preliminary Examination fee is Rs.100, payable at the time of the online application unless fee exemption is claimed by an eligible category; a further Main Examination fee of Rs.200 applies for candidates shortlisted to that stage, again unless exemption applies. While applying, candidates choose two examination centres in order of preference, though the Commission reserves the right to allot a different, nearby centre if your chosen ones cannot accommodate you - benchmark-disability candidates may choose only one centre and are allotted a venue within that district. Once your Hall Ticket is issued, requests to change your allotted examination centre are not entertained.
What happens after 27 September - the stages ahead
Clearing the Preliminary Examination is only the first gate. Based on the notification's own Plan of Examination, the Commission admits roughly 20 times the number of vacancies (26 vacancies here, so in the range of several hundred candidates, adjusted for reservation-group ties) to the Main Examination - Prelims marks themselves are then discarded and play no role in your final rank. Before admission to Main, candidates go through onscreen certificate verification; no supplemental list is published for anyone rejected at that stage or who fails to upload documents in time, so this step deserves the same seriousness as the exam itself. Only after certificate verification do qualified candidates sit the Main Examination (Papers I-IV), followed by Interview for those who clear Paper I's Tamil Eligibility Test qualifying mark and the Paper II-IV qualifying threshold.
Staying current if the date moves again
Given that this cycle's Preliminary Examination date has already moved once (from 6 September to 27 September 2026, via Addendum 5A), treat every date on this page as current as of the addendum cited above, not as permanently fixed. TNPSC communicates all further changes - Main Examination date, certificate-upload schedule, interview call letters - only through the Commission's own website and through SMS/email to your registered mobile number and email address; it explicitly does not send communications by post, and it is not responsible if a message fails to reach you due to an incorrect or inactive contact detail in your OTR profile. Keep your registered mobile number and email active and correct throughout this entire recruitment cycle, and make checking tnpsc.gov.in a standing habit rather than a one-time check after applying.
What to do right now, whichever stage you're in
If you're preparing for 27 September, treat the next weeks as your final Prelims-focused sprint - shift fully into Mains-depth material only after this exam, not before. If you've already applied and are simply waiting, use the remaining time for the highest-yield activity available to you: full-length timed mock tests under Prelims-identical conditions (200 questions, 3 hours, OMR-style, bilingual), since raw content revision without timed practice is the single most common reason otherwise well-prepared candidates underperform on exam day.
One number to keep in perspective
Against 26 tentative vacancies and a Preliminary Examination pattern that typically draws candidates in the tens of thousands statewide, the honest takeaway is that competition for this specific Group 1 cycle is intense by nature - not a reason to be discouraged, but a reason to prioritise focused, timed practice over broad, unfocused reading in your remaining preparation time.

Question 27

How to pass TNPSC exams? A step-by-step method that works

Accepted Answer

To pass TNPSC, you need four things working together: the right exam for your profile, the official syllabus as your only map, school books as your primary source, and relentless timed practice. There is no lottery in this exam - the syllabus is published, the sources are known, negative marking does not exist, and the qualifying marks are printed in every notification. What separates selected candidates from the rest is not secret material; it is method, applied for months without drift.

Step 1: Choose your exam deliberately
Group 1 (degree holders, three stages, the top posts), Group 2/2A (degree holders, two stages, executive and ministerial posts), or Group 4 (SSLC pass, single paper, the highest vacancy counts - 3,935 in the latest notification). Your qualification decides what you can write; your available preparation time and your strengths should decide what you target first. Many aspirants sensibly run Group 2/2A and Group 4 together because the syllabus overlaps heavily. What fails is choosing nothing precisely and preparing "for TNPSC" in general.

Step 2: Print the official syllabus and let it filter everything
Every hour you study should map to a line in the official syllabus (Prelims code 497 for Group 1, 495 for Group 2/2A, 496 for Group 4). Before reading any chapter, ask: which unit does this serve, and how many questions does that unit carry? A candidate who studies with the weightage table open - 50 questions for Economy and TN Development in Group 1, 100 Language questions in Group 2/2A Prelims, 100 Tamil questions in Group 4 - automatically spends time where marks live.

Step 3: Build from Samacheer Kalvi books first
Across every group, a large share of questions is set from Tamil Nadu school book content. Read the relevant Samacheer chapters before any reference book, convert each into one page of your own notes, and add references (Laxmikant for Polity, Spectrum for Modern India) only where school books run thin. Ten books skimmed lose to three sources revised three times - every cycle proves this again.

Step 4: Respect the gates, not just the totals
TNPSC exams contain hard gates that fail well-read candidates: Prelims qualifying marks (90/120 in Group 1; 90 for all in Group 2/2A), the Tamil Eligibility Test at Mains (40 out of 100, without which your Mains papers are never evaluated), and Group 4's rule that Parts B and C are checked only if you score 60 out of 150 in the Tamil part. Map every gate on your exam's path and prepare each one on purpose - especially the Tamil papers, which English-medium candidates habitually underestimate.

Step 5: Make current affairs a daily 30 minutes, filed by unit
Every unit of every TNPSC syllabus ends with "Current affairs". A daily half hour, with each item filed under its syllabus unit, compounds into hundreds of ready marks by exam day; a final-month compilation binge does not. Our free daily bilingual current affairs are organised by these exact units for this reason.

Step 6: Test yourself the way TNPSC will
From at least three months out, write a full-length, exam-identical mock every week: 200 questions, 3 hours, OMR discipline, no pauses. After each test, spend as long reviewing as you spent writing - every error goes into a log, and the log gets revised weekly. This single habit reliably moves candidates from "almost" to selected, because cut-offs are decided by the last 15 to 20 marks, and those marks come from eliminated mistakes, not new books.

A realistic timeline

PhaseDurationFocus

Foundation2-3 monthsSamacheer books unit by unit, in weightage order; daily aptitude; daily current affairs begins
Depth2 monthsReference books for heavy units; notes completed; first full-length mocks
Sharpening1-2 monthsWeekly mocks, error-log revision, Tamil paper practice, current-affairs consolidation

What selected candidates do differently: a mentor's honest list

They finish books; strugglers collect them.
They revise on a schedule (after 2 days, after 2 weeks, after a month); strugglers revise when they feel guilty.
They treat the Tamil papers as scoring subjects; strugglers treat them as formalities.
They write mocks when they feel unready - which is exactly when mocks teach the most.
They keep one error log instead of five new PDFs.
They protect a fixed daily study window, even a modest one, over heroic weekend marathons.

Related doubts, answered briefly
Can a working person pass TNPSC? Yes - with a fixed 2-3 hour daily window, weightage-first study, and weekend mocks. Consistency beats total hours.
Is coaching compulsory? No. The syllabus, school books and notifications are public. Coaching adds structure and testing; both can be built independently - see our self-preparation FAQ.
How many months of preparation are enough? Six focused months is a realistic first serious attempt for Prelims; repeat aspirants with existing notes can compress to three.
In which medium should I write? Question papers are bilingual; answer in whichever language you think fastest in. Choose one medium for notes and stick to it.
What decides selection in the end? For Group 1: Mains plus interview (850 marks). For Group 2: the Mains descriptive paper. For Group 2A: the Mains objective paper. For Group 4: the single written paper. Prelims only opens the door - plan for the stage that actually ranks you. Full stage maps: Group 1, Group 2/2A, Group 4.
The pass-versus-select distinction most beginners miss
"Passing" TNPSC has two different meanings, and confusing them wastes attempts. Crossing the minimum qualifying marks makes you eligible - but selection happens at the cut-off, which competition sets far above the qualifying line whenever applicants outnumber posts. In the latest Group 4 cycle, 3,935 posts drew applicants in the lakhs; in Group 1, 26 posts did. So build your targets from the top down, not the bottom up: aim for the score that selects, treat the qualifying marks as a floor you should never be near, and measure every mock test against that selection target. Candidates who train to "pass" reach the qualifying line; candidates who train to be selected reach the rank list - the daily work differs only in precision and revision discipline, which is exactly why method matters more than talent in this exam.

Question 28

What are the common mistakes to avoid in TNPSC preparation?

Accepted Answer

The most common TNPSC preparation mistakes are not about intelligence or effort - they are about direction: studying from the wrong sources, giving equal time to unequal units, ignoring the Tamil papers, postponing mock tests, and preparing for the stage that does not decide your rank. Each of these is fixable the day you notice it, and every one of them appears in the story of almost every candidate who missed a cut-off narrowly.

Mistake 1: Preparing without the official syllabus open
Aspirants routinely study from whatever material arrives on their phone, unaware whether it maps to any syllabus line. The official documents (codes 497, 495 and 496 on tnpsc.gov.in) are the exam's contract with you - anything outside them cannot be asked, and everything inside them can. Fix: print your exam's syllabus, tick units as you cover them, and reject any material you cannot map to a unit.

Mistake 2: Skipping Samacheer books for "exam guides"
Compressed guides feel efficient until the paper asks the one line the guide dropped. TNPSC sets a large share of questions straight from school book sentences, and guides are summaries of summaries. Fix: school books first, guides only for revision after the source is read.

Mistake 3: Equal time for unequal units
In Group 1 Prelims, Economy with TN Development carries 50 questions and General Science carries 10 - yet many aspirants spend identical weeks on both. The same distortion appears in Group 2/2A (where the Language part is 100 of 200 questions) and Group 4 (where Tamil is 150 of 300 marks). Fix: write your weekly plan with the weightage table beside it; hours should roughly track question counts.

Mistake 4: Treating the Tamil papers as formalities
The Tamil Eligibility Test gates the entire Mains evaluation for Group 1 and Group 2/2A at 40 marks, and Group 4's Tamil part is half the exam's marks with its own 40 percent gate. Every cycle, well-read candidates lose everything at these gates. Fix: schedule the Tamil paper as a subject with weekly hours, from the first month, not the last.

Mistake 5: Reading endlessly, testing rarely
"I will take mocks once the portion is over" is the most expensive sentence in TNPSC preparation - the portion is never over. Without timed 200-question practice, reading accuracy never converts to exam accuracy. Fix: a full-length mock every week in the final three months, with review time equal to writing time and every error logged.

Mistake 6: Collecting materials instead of finishing them
Five polity PDFs, three history guides, two current-affairs apps - and none completed. Every new source restarts your memory curve from zero. Fix: one source per subject, revised at least three times; add a second source only when mock tests prove a specific gap.

Mistake 7: Preparing for Prelims as if it decides the rank
In Group 1 and Group 2, Prelims marks are discarded after screening - the descriptive Mains decides everything. Candidates who never practised answer writing discover in the Mains hall that knowing and writing are different skills. Fix: from the day Prelims ends (or earlier), daily answer-writing practice with word and time limits.

Mistake 8: Current affairs as a final-month cram
Twelve months of events cannot enter memory in three weeks, and every syllabus unit ends with "Current affairs". Fix: thirty minutes daily, each item filed under its syllabus unit - our daily bilingual current affairs are structured exactly this way.

Mistake 9: Ignoring the exam's own rules
Candidates lose attempts to details printed plainly in the notification: application correction windows, certificate mismatches with One Time Registration data, upload deadlines before Mains, centre rules. There is no supplemental list for documentation failures. Fix: read your notification end to end once, and your OTR profile before every application - our OTR FAQ lists the usual traps.

Mistake 10: Stopping after one near miss
Cut-offs are decided by a handful of marks, and a first serious attempt that falls short usually means the method needs adjusting, not the dream. The error log, the weightage table and the Tamil paper plan - revisited honestly - turn a near miss into next cycle's selection. Fix: diagnose the exact stage and units where marks were lost, and rebuild the plan around those, not around more hours everywhere.

Quick self-audit: are you making these right now?

QuestionHealthy answer

Can you name your exam's unit weightages from memory?Yes, and your timetable reflects them
When was your last full-length timed mock?Within the last 7-10 days
How many hours went to the Tamil paper this week?A scheduled, non-zero number
How many unfinished materials are on your phone?Zero new ones this month
Where are yesterday's current affairs filed?Under their syllabus units

For the exam-specific versions of these corrections, see the strategy sections of our Group 1, Group 2/2A and Group 4 syllabus pages, and pressure-test your preparation in the ArivArk test series.
The pattern behind all ten mistakes
Look at the list again and one thread runs through it: every mistake substitutes what feels productive for what the exam actually measures. Collecting PDFs feels productive; finishing one book is what scores. Reading for eight hours feels productive; a three-hour timed mock with honest review is what scores. Postponing the Tamil paper feels harmless; the gate at 40 marks is what fails people. The correction is not more effort - most TNPSC aspirants already work hard - it is redirecting the same effort toward the scoreboard. Once a week, ask one question: "Of everything I did this week, how much would have directly earned marks on the actual paper?" Prepare your next week to raise that percentage, and the ten mistakes above quietly disappear from your preparation without ever being fought one by one.

Question 29

Which academy is best for TNPSC coaching?

Accepted Answer

The honest answer: the best TNPSC academy is the one that teaches from the sources the exam is actually set from, tests you in the exam's real format and both languages, shows you truthfully where you stand, and is run by people who have faced the exam themselves. Judge any academy - including ours - against those criteria rather than against advertising volume. This article gives you the seven checks that actually predict results, and then shows you openly how ArivArk Academy is built around every one of them.

The seven checks that separate real coaching from marketing

#CheckWhy it predicts results

1Teaches from Samacheer Kalvi school books, mapped to the official syllabusThe largest share of actual TNPSC questions is set from these pages - an academy teaching mainly from its own compilations is teaching around the exam, not for it
2Fully bilingual - Tamil and English in every test and explanationThe real papers are bilingual; preparing in only one language handicaps you on exam day
3Tests in the exam's real format, on scheduleFull-length, timed, exam-identical tests are the single strongest predictor of final scores
4Explains every test - not just scores itA test without a detailed explanation teaches you nothing about the marks you lost
5Publishes an honest rank listKnowing your true position against real competitors is uncomfortable and irreplaceable - academies that hide it are protecting their retention, not your result
6Has mentors who have actually faced the examSomeone who has sat in the hall knows the traps, the timing pressure and the last-mile mistakes no textbook mentions
7Builds a daily current-affairs habit organised by syllabus unitsEvery unit of every official TNPSC syllabus ends with "Current affairs" - an academy that leaves this to you is leaving marks on the table

How ArivArk Academy answers each check
Source-first teaching (checks 1 and 2). Every ArivArk test is built from Samacheer Kalvi lessons mapped to the official syllabus, and the source material is shared before each test so you always know exactly which chapters to study. Everything - questions, options, explanations - is fully bilingual, because the real paper is.
Real testing with real explanations (checks 3 and 4). Our test series runs on a published schedule in the exam's exact format, and every single paper comes with a video explanation that walks through the answers - so a test you scored poorly on becomes the most valuable study session of your week.
An honest rank list (check 5). After every test you see your genuine rank against everyone who wrote it. We have never inflated or hidden this, because the whole point of a test series is to know the truth early, while there is still time to act on it.
A mentor who has faced the exam (check 6). ArivArk's founder has cleared Group 2 Prelims and Mains three separate times, cleared Group 1 Prelims and written its Mains, and been through interview boards, counselling and physical tests across five different examinations. That journey - every stage, every trap - is the raw material of how we teach. Read it in full on our founder's page.
The daily habit, free for everyone (check 7). Our daily bilingual current affairs are published free and organised by the exact syllabus units the exams use, so every day's reading files itself into your preparation - whether or not you ever pay us a rupee.

Results, stated plainly
More than a thousand aspirants have prepared with ArivArk's guidance over the years. In one recent cycle, over two hundred of our students cleared the Group 2 Preliminary exam, and dozens have gone on to hold posts such as Sub Registrar and Deputy Commercial Tax Officer. We publish what we can verify and claim nothing we cannot - which is exactly the standard you should hold every academy to.

Who ArivArk may not be the best fit for
Honesty cuts both ways. ArivArk is an online-first academy: if you specifically want a physical classroom to sit in every morning, a local offline institute may suit your discipline style better. And no academy - ours included - can substitute for your own daily hours; coaching organises and pressure-tests preparation, it does not replace it. If you thrive with structure, honest measurement and bilingual material, we are built for you; if you are looking for shortcuts around the syllabus, nobody honest can sell you one.

How to evaluate any academy before paying - including ours

Ask for the source mapping: which book and chapter does each test cover? Vague answers mean compiled content.
Ask to see one full explanation for a past test - the quality of explanations is the quality of the teaching.
Ask how the rank list works and whether every student sees it.
Ask who sets the papers and what their own exam history is.
Use the free material first. Our daily current affairs, our syllabus guides and our notification-verified FAQ library are open to everyone - judge our standards from them before you spend anything, and apply the same test to anyone else.

Related doubts, answered briefly
Is coaching compulsory to clear TNPSC? No - the syllabus and sources are public, and self-prepared candidates clear every cycle. Coaching adds structure, testing and mentorship; see our self-preparation FAQ for the honest trade-offs.
Is online coaching as effective as offline? For content and testing, yes - often better, because you revise on your own schedule and never lose commute hours. What online demands is self-discipline, which our scheduled tests and rank list are designed to supply.
What should TNPSC coaching cost? Judge cost against the checklist above, not against brand size. Structured test series with explanations should be affordable to a student - be suspicious of both extremes: very expensive brand-name packages and free-forever promises with no real testing.
Can I combine ArivArk with another academy or self-study? Of course. Many of our students use our tests and current affairs as their measurement layer over their own reading - the checklist works whatever combination you choose.
Where do I start with ArivArk? Read today's current affairs, pick your exam's guide from the Syllabus menu, and when you are ready to be tested honestly, join the test series.

Question 30

How to clear TNPSC exams in the first attempt: the complete strategy

Accepted Answer

Clearing TNPSC in the first attempt is genuinely achievable, and candidates do it every cycle - but almost never by accident. The single trait first-attempt clearers share is that they refuse to treat attempt one as a trial run. They pick one exam, plan the entire selection cycle (not just Prelims), map every qualifying gate before they open a book, start months before the notification, and test themselves in the real format long before TNPSC does. This article lays out that complete strategy, phase by phase.

Why most first attempts fail - and why none of the reasons are intelligence
Watch what typically happens: an aspirant decides to "try" TNPSC when the notification appears, giving themselves ten to twelve weeks against competitors who have prepared for a year. They study only for Prelims because Mains feels distant, then discover after results that descriptive writing is a skill they never built. They hop between materials that arrive on their phone, treat the Tamil papers as formalities, and write their first ever full-length 200-question test inside the actual exam hall. Any one of these habits can sink an attempt; most first-timers carry all five. The strategy below is essentially their systematic reversal.

The first-attempt mindset: plan as if there is no second attempt
Paradoxically, aspirants who quietly believe "if not this time, next time" almost guarantee the next time will be needed. Planning as if this attempt is the only one changes daily decisions: you start before the notification because the Annual Planner already tells you when exams come; you prepare the deciding stage (Mains for Groups 1 and 2, the single paper for Group 4) from the beginning; you spend money and time on testing rather than on a sixth reference book. First-attempt success is less about brilliance and more about refusing every habit that assumes a future attempt will fix things.

The four-phase first-attempt roadmap

PhaseWhenDeliverables - not activities

1. FoundationMonths 1-3Samacheer school books completed for the top-weightage units, converted into your own one-page notes; daily aptitude and current-affairs habits running without breaks
2. Depth and precisionMonths 3-5Reference depth added only where the exam demands it (Polity above all); every fact sheet rewritten as statement pairs; first two full-length mocks completed and reviewed
3. Test conversionFinal 2 months before PrelimsWeekly exam-identical mocks; an error log that shrinks week over week; revision cycles of notes, not books; the Tamil paper prepared as a scoring subject
4. Stage two, immediatelyFrom the evening of PrelimsFor Groups 1 and 2: daily descriptive answers under word and time limits, Mains-only topics covered, Tamil Eligibility Test writing practice; no waiting for results

Notice the phrasing: deliverables, not activities. "Read Polity for two weeks" is an activity that can quietly fail; "twenty precision sheets with article numbers" either exists or it does not. First-attempt candidates cannot afford the ambiguity that repeaters absorb through experience - concrete outputs are the substitute for that experience.

Map every gate before you study a single unit
TNPSC selection is a chain of gates, and first-timers routinely discover a gate only when it fails them. Write yours down on day one. For Group 1: Prelims qualifying marks (90 or 120 by category), roughly 20-times-vacancies admission to Mains, the Tamil Eligibility Test's 40-mark bar without which Papers II to IV are never evaluated, the 225/300 Mains qualifying total, then the interview. For Group 2/2A: 90 marks in Prelims for all communities, the same Tamil test bar, then the Mains that alone decides rank - there is no interview. For Group 4: 40 percent in the Tamil part (60 of 150) before General Studies is even evaluated, with 90 overall as the floor. A first attempt that maps these gates plans for all of them simultaneously; one that does not is gambling on sequential luck. The complete stage maps: Group 1, Group 2/2A, Group 4.

Your two structural disadvantages - and how to erase them
A repeater walks in with two assets you lack: exam-hall experience and a personal history of mistakes. Both can be manufactured. Hall experience: write every TNPSC exam you are eligible for, even ones you are not targeting - a Group 4 or Group 2A paper written seriously is a full-dress rehearsal of OMR discipline, time pressure and the three-hour concentration curve. Simulate the rest at home: weekly mocks at the exact exam timing, printed OMR sheets, phone in another room. Mistake history: build it from previous year question papers - solved under time and logged error by error, they compress several cycles of other aspirants' experience into your preparation. And use a rule many first-timers forget: TNPSC lets every candidate take the question paper home after the exam, so each rehearsal exam you write adds one more real paper you can re-solve and analyse at your desk. These two substitutions are the heart of first-attempt strategy; everything else is ordinary good preparation done without gaps.

What first-attempt toppers do differently: a mentor's list

They choose one primary exam and let others orbit it. Preparing "for TNPSC" in general is how first attempts dissolve; preparing for Group 2 while writing Group 4 as rehearsal is how they succeed.
They open the weightage table before every study week. Hours flow to question counts - never equally across units.
They start answer-writing absurdly early. For Groups 1 and 2, a page a day from month two. Writing is a motor skill; the hall is not where you build it.
They treat the application itself as part of the exam. One Time Registration details verified, certificates matching, correction window dates noted - clerical errors end more first attempts than hard questions do. Our OTR guide covers every trap.
They never compare mock ranks with repeaters in month two. The comparison that matters is their own error log, week over week.
They keep one rest day sacred. A first attempt is a marathon run once; burnout in month four costs more marks than any missed chapter.

The last month: where first attempts are won and lost
By the final month, new learning is nearly worthless and consolidation is everything. The winning pattern is unglamorous: a full mock every few days, half a day of honest review after each, your one-page notes cycled completely each week, current affairs consolidated from your year of daily filing rather than crammed from compilations, and sleep protected like a syllabus unit. Walk in having already written ten full exams, and the eleventh - the real one - feels like routine. That feeling is the entire point of this strategy: for a prepared first-timer, exam day is not the first time; it is the eleventh.

Related doubts, answered briefly
Is clearing in the first attempt realistic for an average student? Yes - selection lists every cycle include first-timers. The exam measures preparation quality, not attempt count; the strategy above is how "average" becomes prepared.
How many hours a day are needed? Six focused hours with revision and testing beats ten unstructured ones. Working aspirants clearing in attempt one typically run two to three disciplined hours daily plus weekend mocks.
When should I start for a specific exam? Count back at least six months from the exam date on the Annual Planner - and remember the notification is your revision milestone, not your starting gun.
Can I clear without coaching in the first attempt? Yes, with structure and honest testing self-supplied - our self-preparation FAQ shows how, and our test series can supply the testing layer alone.
What if I still fall short? Then you begin attempt two with notes, an error log, hall experience and stage awareness - months ahead of where most repeaters restart. A serious first attempt is never wasted; a casual one almost always is. See the common mistakes guide to make sure yours is the serious kind.

Question 31

How to prepare for TNPSC exams without coaching?

Accepted Answer

Coaching is not compulsory for TNPSC - thousands of aspirants clear these exams through disciplined self-study every year, and many toppers explicitly credit a structured routine over any particular institute. What actually determines success is not where your notes came from, but whether you run a genuine study-test-revise cycle consistently. Here is a complete, practical self-study framework.

Step 1: build your source material around school textbooks, not scattered internet notes
Tamil Nadu's own Samacheer Kalvi textbooks, 6th to 12th standard, are the single best foundation - a large share of TNPSC's General Studies questions across every group are drawn directly from this school syllabus, not from external competitive-exam reference books. Read our dedicated book list FAQ for the specific reference books worth adding on top of the school books for Group 1/2-level depth.

Step 2: handle current affairs as a daily habit, not a last-month cram
Read a Tamil or English daily newspaper and keep short, organised notes by subject, or use a ready-made bilingual daily digest so you aren't spending your limited study time summarising raw news yourself. Our Daily Current Affairs pages are free, updated every day, syllabus-tagged, and available in both English and Tamil; our Current Affairs Articles go deeper on individual stories that need more than a daily-digest summary. Current affairs compounds - a topic covered thoroughly in month one often reappears, directly or as background, months later, so consistent daily coverage beats an intense but late cram every time.

Step 3: test yourself under real exam conditions, regularly
This is the single biggest reason self-study plans fail - reading notes repeatedly without testing yourself under timed, exam-format conditions builds a false sense of readiness. A weekly or bi-weekly test, with an honest rank list and a full explanation for every question (not just the correct answer, but why the wrong options are wrong), tells you precisely where you actually stand and what specifically to revise next, rather than a vague feeling of "I've covered this topic."

Step 4: revise on a genuine cycle - Learn, Recall, Revise, Master
A topic studied once and never returned to fades within weeks. Build a deliberate revision schedule: revisit material from two weeks ago, one month ago, and three months ago on a rolling basis, rather than only moving forward through new content. Keep one dedicated "mistakes notebook" - every question you get wrong in practice goes into it, and you revisit that notebook specifically every week, since your own past mistakes are the highest-value revision material you have (see our separate practice-mistakes tracking inside every batch dashboard).

Step 5: manage time realistically if you are studying alongside work or college
A commonly used self-study schedule structure: an early morning slot (roughly 1.5-2 hours) for revision of previously covered material when your mind is freshest, a focused evening slot (2-3 hours) for new chapters and practice tests, and a short 20-30 minute slot before sleep specifically for current affairs. Total daily study time matters less than consistency - two disciplined hours every single day for months outperforms erratic six-hour weekend binges with nothing in between.

Common mistakes self-study aspirants make

Preparing Mains-level depth from day one "just in case," which spreads limited time too thin and risks missing the Prelims cut-off entirely - qualify first, then go deep (see our exam pattern FAQs for how Prelims and Mains are scored independently).
Treating the Tamil/Language paper as an afterthought since it seems "easy" - it is still a real qualifying gate, and in Group 4's case, a scoring component too.
Collecting notes from many different sources without ever testing what was actually retained - volume of material read is not the same as volume of material recalled under pressure.

Our free CORE 50 batch is built exactly around this Learn - Recall - Revise - Master cycle: 50 daily tests on the highest-weightage school lessons, with the source PDF shared before every test so you always study before you attempt, plus a full explanation and rank list after every submission.
A realistic weekly structure for self-study
Self-study succeeds or fails on structure, not raw hours. A workable weekly split for a working self-studier: dedicate roughly half your study time to building fresh syllabus content (reading, note-making, one unit at a time following the exact weightage of the Prelims units), a quarter to revising material you've already covered (spaced repetition beats cramming - revisit a topic after a few days, then again after a couple of weeks), and the final quarter to timed practice - full-length mock tests under real exam conditions, not just reading through solved question banks. Candidates who only "read and understand" without ever practising under timed, OMR-style conditions are consistently the ones who know the material but run out of time or make avoidable errors on the actual exam day.
Where self-study candidates most often go wrong

No external accountability: without a coaching schedule, it's easy to drift from your own study plan without noticing for weeks. Set concrete weekly targets (a unit finished, a mock test attempted) and track them somewhere visible.
Reading too many sources for one topic: TNPSC's syllabus is broad but finite. Pick one solid source per subject and go deep, rather than collecting five overlapping references for the same unit and finishing none of them properly.
Skipping current affairs consistency: TNPSC's General Studies papers draw meaningfully on recent events, government schemes and appointments. A daily current-affairs habit compounds over months in a way that a last-month cram session cannot replace - see our daily bilingual current affairs for a structured way to keep this going without it eating your whole day.
No mock-test discipline: without a coaching centre's built-in test calendar, self-study candidates often skip full-length mocks until "later" - and later frequently never arrives before the real exam. Schedule mocks on your calendar in advance, the same way you would schedule a class.

The one advantage self-study genuinely has over coaching
Self-study lets you spend more time exactly where your own weak units are, rather than following a coaching centre's fixed pace across every unit equally. Use this advantage deliberately: after every mock test, spend real time analysing which units cost you the most marks, and rebalance your following week's study time toward those specifically, rather than progressing through a generic syllabus order regardless of where your actual gaps are.

Question 32

What are the best books for TNPSC Group 1 and Group 2 preparation?

Accepted Answer

The single most important fact about TNPSC Group 1 and Group 2 book lists: Tamil Nadu Samacheer Kalvi school textbooks from 6th to 12th standard are compulsory reading for every subject except Polity - a large share of General Studies questions in every TNPSC exam are drawn directly from this school syllabus, not from external reference books. Everything below is a supplement to that foundation, not a replacement for it.

English Medium reference list, with why each book is used

SubjectReferenceWhy this one

History (Ancient & Medieval India)Ancient and Medieval India - Poonam Dalal DahiyaConcise, exam-oriented coverage of the exact period range TNPSC tests
Indian National MovementSpectrum - Modern IndiaThe standard reference for freedom-struggle chronology and personalities used across most competitive exams
PolityLaxmikantThe one subject where school textbooks alone are explicitly insufficient - Laxmikant covers Constitutional depth TNPSC questions expect
GovernanceLaxmikantSame book, different chapters - governance and polity are typically studied together from this single source
ScienceSchool textbooksTNPSC's General Science questions stay close to school-level concepts; no separate reference generally needed
GeographyMajid HussainCovers Indian geography at the depth TNPSC's Degree-standard papers expect, beyond school-level maps and facts
EconomicsRamesh SinghStandard reference for Indian economy concepts and current economic-policy context
Aptitude (Maths)Quantitative Aptitude - R.S. AggarwalCovers the exact topics tested (simplification, percentage, HCF/LCM, ratio, interest, area, volume, time and work) with practice volume
ReasoningReasoning - R.S. AggarwalSame series, covers logical reasoning, puzzles, dice, visual reasoning, alpha-numeric reasoning and number series
EVSShankar IASWidely used for Environment and Ecology depth beyond school textbook coverage

Tamil Medium reference list

History (Ancient, Medieval, British-era India, Indian Freedom Struggle) - வெங்கடேசன் (Venkatesan): a Tamil-medium history reference covering the same period range as the English Poonam Dalal Dahiya / Spectrum combination.
Science - school textbooks, same as the English medium approach; no separate Tamil reference generally needed beyond Samacheer Kalvi.
Indian Polity - ப்ரகதீஷ் வெளியீடு (Pragadeesh publication), Tamili Publications: Tamil-medium publishers producing Constitution and governance material at a depth comparable to Laxmikant's English coverage.

How to actually use this list - sequencing matters
Do not start with the reference books. Read the relevant Samacheer Kalvi chapters first for every subject, since that is where the bulk of actual TNPSC questions originate and it establishes the foundational structure the reference books build on. Use the reference books specifically for: (1) Polity and Governance, where school textbooks are explicitly thin and Laxmikant (or the Tamil equivalents) is close to essential rather than optional; (2) filling factual gaps you notice while attempting practice tests - if you consistently miss questions on a specific sub-topic, that is when you go deeper into the matching reference chapter, rather than reading the whole reference book cover to cover speculatively; (3) Aptitude and Reasoning, which school textbooks don't cover in a TNPSC-exam-relevant format at all, making R.S. Aggarwal's practice volume genuinely necessary from the start.
A common, costly mistake is collecting every book on this list and reading none of them thoroughly. A smaller set of sources, revised multiple times with active testing between revisions, consistently outperforms a large pile of books skimmed once each.

Our Group 1 Prelims Test Series and free CORE 50 batch are both built directly from these same school lessons, bilingual, with the source PDF shared before every test - so you always know exactly which chapter to have studied before you attempt.
Does the same list work for both Group 1 and Group 2/2A?
Yes, with one adjustment. The Samacheer Kalvi foundation and the reference books above apply equally to Group 1 Prelims, Group 2/2A Common Prelims and both groups' Main Examinations, since all three share the same broad General Studies syllabus base (Indian Polity, Economy, Geography, History, Science, Aptitude). The adjustment is depth, not source: Group 1's Main Examination (Papers II-IV, Degree standard, 750 marks) expects noticeably more descriptive depth on Polity, Ethics and Integrity, and current economic trends than Group 2's single Main Paper II - so Group 1 aspirants should plan a second, deeper pass through Laxmikant and Ramesh Singh specifically for Mains, after clearing Prelims, rather than trying to read at Mains-depth from day one.
Where current affairs fits into this book list
None of the books above substitute for a running current-affairs habit - TNPSC's General Studies papers, across all three groups, consistently draw questions on recent government schemes, appointments, awards and policy changes that no static reference book can cover, simply because they're published before those events happen. Treat current affairs as a separate, daily practice alongside this book list rather than a one-time revision topic - our daily bilingual current affairs pages are organised by the same six Prelims units used above, so you can slot each day's reading directly into the unit you're currently revising from your books.
A sequencing note for candidates starting from zero
If you are only beginning your preparation now, resist the urge to buy every book on this list in your first week. Start with Samacheer Kalvi 6th-12th for one subject at a time, moving in the order of Prelims unit weightage - Economy/TN Development Administration, Polity, and TN History/Culture first, since these three units carry the bulk of the Prelims paper's questions. Add Laxmikant for Polity only once you've read the corresponding school chapters, so the reference book builds on a foundation you already recognise rather than introducing every concept cold. R.S. Aggarwal for Aptitude and Reasoning is the one exception worth starting on day one, since school textbooks don't cover this section's format at all, and steady daily practice compounds over months in a way a last-month push cannot replicate.
A final word on cost
You do not need to buy every book new or all at once. Second-hand copies, library access, and PDFs shared by your own coaching batch (where the source chapter is clearly stated, as ours are) cover the same content at a fraction of the cost - spend your money on the one or two books you'll genuinely revise multiple times, not on completing the list for its own sake.
