The Day and the Tamil Papers That Mourned Him

  • Subramania Bharati died on the night of 11 September 1921. The date in 2026 marks his 105th death anniversary, observed with floral tribute at his statue on the Marina, Kamarajar Salai, and with the 77th Bharati Peruvizha at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mylapore.
  • The day after his death, the Tamil daily Swadesamitran and the English daily The Hindu each carried a sub-editorial on him. A sub-editorial is the second leader of a paper, shorter than the main editorial, and its use for a poet's death is itself a measure of standing.
  • Thiru. Vi. Ka.'s weekly Nava Sakthi carried a tribute on 16 September.
  • On the same date, So. Murugappa's Chettinad weekly Dhanavaisya Ooliyan wrote at length, and spoke of Bharati as a gnani, a seer, besides poet and freedom fighter.
  • Varadarajulu Naidu's weekly Tamil Nadu, published from Salem, carried a sub-editorial on 18 September and a tribute on the 25th.
  • Satyamurti wrote tributes in The Hindu on 14 September and in Swadesamitran on 17 September, saying in both that Bharati was the equal of the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore and that he was not speaking in excess.
  • The same calendar date carries another event of the national movement: Swami Vivekananda's address at Chicago in 1893.

The Two English Journals of the Extremist Phase

  • Two English journals stood at the front of radical Indian politics in Bharati's time, and both were run by leaders of the extremist wing rather than by professional newspapermen.
  • Vande Mataram was published from Calcutta and founded by Bipin Chandra Pal. Aurobindo served as its editor. News about Bharati had appeared on its front page in his lifetime, and the journal itself ceased publication before he died.
  • Mahratta was published from Pune and founded by Bal Gangadhar Tilak, alongside his Marathi paper Kesari. N.C. Kelkar, who was close to Tilak, edited it through important stretches, and it continued to appear after Tilak's death.
  • Tilak, whom Bharati took as his political master, died in 1920, and Bharati followed within a year. Tilak's period is the pre-Gandhi phase of the national movement, and that is the phase Bharati's political writing belongs to.
  • A letter Bharati wrote to Tilak on 29 May 1908, addressing him as beloved Guruji, is preserved at the Tilak museum in Pune, with a copy placed in a glass case for public view. In it Bharati asked Tilak to tell Kelkar to open a correspondence with his own association.
  • The letter was found by Professor N. Sanjeevi when he visited Pune in 1966 and published through the journal Kalaimagal. Ra. A. Padmanabhan later obtained it from the Kesari and Mahratta office and printed it in his volume of Bharati's letters.
  • An episode of 1907 shows how close the link was. A reporter of Tilak's Kesari found in the old records of the Poona Sarvajanik Sabha a resolution of 1894, signed by Gokhale, on boycotting foreign cloth and using swadeshi cloth. The editor of Mahratta sent Bharati an advance copy before printing it himself, and Bharati thanked him in his own journal India on 9 February 1907.

The Mahratta Obituary of 25 September 1921

  • The news of Bharati's death reached the wider Indian political world through Mahratta's issue of 25 September 1921, under the heading Late Subramania Bharati, within two weeks of his death.
  • The paper's correspondent for the Madras Presidency wrote without giving his own name, under the pen name Tilak Sishya, in a standing column titled Madras Letter, which the journal carried with prominence.
  • He opened by calling it his sorrowful duty to inform readers that the great poet Subramania Bharati had died.
  • The notice recorded that Bharati's patriotic songs, set to popular tunes and stirring to hear, were being sung across Tamil Nadu, and that they were kindling in the people a sense of freedom, of sacrifice and of patriotism. It called him an artist of rare power.
  • It quoted The Hindu's obituary directly, which had described Bharati as an extreme nationalist, a serious thinker, a rousing speaker and a powerful writer, and had said that when he sang his own national songs, genuine patriotism was born in the hearts of those who heard him.
  • It also carried over The Hindu's observation that his speeches awakening the spirit of freedom were not pleasing to the ruling powers, so that like many Indian patriots he had to live for some years in the refuge of Puducherry.
  • The finding matters for a plain reason: it is the record of the news travelling beyond Tamil soil, carried to the all India political world from Maharashtra, through a journal founded by Tilak, and written by a disciple of Tilak. It was traced in December during a ten day search at the Tilak museum in Pune by the writer of the feature.

Two Comparisons: Dwijendralal Roy and Tagore

  • The 1921 notice made a comparison not found anywhere else in the writing on Bharati: that he might be called the Dwijendralal Roy of the Tamil soil. The phrase used was Tamil soil with Dravida Desam in brackets, which suggests the whole of the south was in view.
  • Dwijendralal Roy, also written as D.L. Roy, was one of the literary figures of Bengal, born in 1863 and dead in 1913. He was accomplished in drama, in composing songs and in poetry, was a contemporary of Tagore, and the record shows the two first close and later estranged.
  • His patriotic songs, among them Dhana Dhanya Pushpa Bhara and Banga Amar Janani Amar, were sung widely and roused the people, raising the flame of patriotism in Bengal. He also worked in the fields of women's rights and religious reform, is honoured as a great poet of Bengal, and some of his songs were translated and praised by Aurobindo.
  • The ground of the comparison was therefore narrow and exact: not drama, in which Bharati wrote only two or three plays, but the writing of patriotic songs that ordinary people actually sang. Much of Bharati's finest work, including Kuyil Pattu, the second part of Panchali Sabatham and Katchigal, had not yet appeared in 1921, so the songs were what the writer had before him.
  • A curiosity followed in 1937, when a Tamil play titled Meevara Veezhchi appeared, described as a translation of a play by Dwijendralal Roy, and carried Bharati's songs between its scenes. Its translator joined the two names without knowing of the comparison made in 1921.
  • The older and far better known comparison is with Tagore. In 1917, Parali Su. Nellaiyappar, publishing Bharati's Kannan Pattu, praised him in the preface as the Rabindranath of Tamil Nadu.
  • On 1 September 1917, the Justice Party's daily Dravidan, reviewing the same book, endorsed that description and said his songs were themselves the proof of it.
  • In 1921, the last year of Bharati's life, Madurakavi Bhaskaradas wrote in the second part of his work on Indian patriots that India had two emperors of poetry, Rabindranath Tagore in the north and Subramania Bharati in the south.
  • Bharati had in his early period called himself Shelleydas, meaning a devotee of the English revolutionary poet Shelley, and wrote a story under that pen name in his journal Chakravarthini.
  • The pairing of Bharati with Tagore later became common, and two studies stand out in it: Ka. Kailasapathy's Iru Mahakavigal and To. Mu. Si. Raghunathan's Gangaiyum Kaveriyum.
