What the 11th Excavation Phase Found

  • The 11th phase of excavation at Keeladi, Sivagangai district, began on 18 March 2026 and may continue till September, conducted by the Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology (TNSDA) under Director Ramesh Masethung.
  • Continuous brick structures have been found across all nine excavated quadrants, and over 1,300 artefacts have been recovered, including clay hopscotches, terracotta beads and spindle whorls, iron knives, chisels, swords and nails, semi-precious stones such as amethyst, carnelian and agate, ivory dice, and gold ornaments under 1 cm in size.
  • Archaeologists uncovered a terracotta pipeline and closed drainage system, suggesting a possible industrial area, along with intact pots at four locations, one bearing a fish symbol on its shoulder, a motif associated with the Pandya dynasty; organic material recovered has been sent for carbon dating.

What Is Keeladi, and Why the Site Matters

  • Keeladi (also spelled Keezhadi) is a village on the banks of the Vaigai river, about 12 km from Madurai, where excavation since 2015 has uncovered evidence of a large, planned settlement dated to the Sangam era.
  • Carbon dating of samples from the site has pushed its habitation back to as early as around the 6th century BCE, making it one of the earliest known urban settlements in South India and contemporaneous with the widely-taught "second urbanisation" of the Gangetic plains.
  • The site is widely seen as physical evidence for the historicity of Sangam literature's descriptions of organised, literate urban life in ancient Tamil Nadu.

From the ASI to the Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology

  • Keeladi was first excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) from 2015, led by archaeologist K. Amarnath Ramakrishna, whose early findings suggested a sophisticated urban settlement.
  • After two excavation seasons, Ramakrishna was transferred, and the ASI's excavation report was delayed for years, prompting allegations that findings challenging a Gangetic-plains-centred narrative of Indian urbanisation were being held back.
  • Since around 2017-18, the Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology has conducted the subsequent excavation phases (now in its 11th phase), and a dedicated Keeladi Archaeological Site Museum was inaugurated at the village in March 2023.

Evidence of a Literate, Urban Sangam-Era Society

  • Excavated pottery bears graffiti and inscriptions in the Tamil-Brahmi script, offering some of the earliest evidence of literacy in Tamil Nadu; spindle whorls and other textile-working tools point to an organised weaving and craft-production economy, consistent with Sangam literature's descriptions of the region's cotton trade.
  • Brick structures, ring wells and drainage systems recovered across excavation phases indicate deliberate urban planning, while beads, semi-precious stones and items in copper, iron, ivory and gold point to craft specialisation and trade networks.

Why This Matters for the Exam

  • Keeladi sits squarely in the "History, Culture and Heritage of Tamil Nadu" and "Tamil Society, Culture and Heritage" syllabus units, and is one of the most frequently referenced sites in heritage-linked current affairs questions.
  • Key facts to retain: location (Sivagangai district, on the Vaigai river, near Madurai), the agencies involved (ASI, then TNSDA), the approximate dating (around the 6th century BCE), the script found (Tamil-Brahmi), and the site museum (inaugurated March 2023).
