Syllabus: Prelims Unit III - History, Culture of India and National Movement | Mains Paper II, Unit 1 - Modern History of India and Indian Culture

What Was Announced

  • Sarnath, in Uttar Pradesh, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, becoming India's 45th site on the list. The decision was taken at the UNESCO World Heritage Committee's 48th session, held in Busan, South Korea.
  • Sarnath is located about 10 km from Varanasi, on the banks of the Varuna river, and is one of the four most sacred sites in Buddhism, alongside Lumbini (birth), Bodh Gaya (enlightenment) and Kushinagar (death, or mahaparinirvana).

Why Sarnath Matters: The Buddha's First Sermon

  • After attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, the Buddha travelled to Sarnath (then called Isipatana, the "Deer Park") to deliver his first sermon, known as the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta ("Setting in Motion the Wheel of Dharma"), to his first five disciples, the pañcavaggiya.
  • This event is considered the founding moment of the Sangha, the community of monks, completing what Buddhists call the "Three Jewels": the Buddha, the Dharma (his teaching) and the Sangha.
  • The Dhamek Stupa, the site's principal monument, is believed to mark the spot of the first sermon; the nearby Chaukhandi Stupa marks the place where the Buddha is said to have met his five disciples.

The Ashoka Pillar and India's National Emblem

  • Mauryan emperor Ashoka erected a monolithic sandstone pillar at Sarnath in the 3rd century BCE, topped by the Lion Capital: four Asiatic lions standing back to back, above an abacus carrying a wheel (chakra) and animal reliefs.
  • After Independence, the Lion Capital of Sarnath was adopted as independent India's National Emblem in 1950, and the Ashoka Chakra from its abacus was placed at the centre of the Indian national flag.

Rediscovery: From Ruins to a Protected Site

  • Sarnath declined along with Buddhism in India over the centuries and was largely destroyed during invasions of the region; it lay in ruins for centuries before rediscovery.
  • British archaeologist Alexander Cunningham, founder of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), carried out early excavations at the site in the 1830s; further systematic excavation led by F.O. Oertel in 1904-05 unearthed the Ashoka Pillar's Lion Capital.
  • The Sarnath Archaeological Museum, established in 1910, is the oldest site museum maintained by the ASI and houses the original Lion Capital along with other finds from the excavations.

Why This Matters for the Exam

  • Sarnath links directly to several recurring syllabus themes: Buddhist history and the "Three Jewels," Mauryan-era art and Ashokan edicts, and the origin of independent India's national symbols.
  • Key facts to retain: location (near Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh), the event it marks (the Buddha's first sermon), its principal monument (Dhamek Stupa), the source of India's national emblem (Ashoka's Lion Capital, adopted in 1950), and its new status (India's 45th UNESCO World Heritage Site).
