Why Tamil Nadu stays dry in the southwest monsoon (rain shadow of the Western Ghats: Mangalore 280 cm, Bengaluru 50 cm), how the retreating monsoon is turned by the Coriolis force to blow from the northeast, the four seasons of India, a southwest vs northeast monsoon table, a real TNPSC PYQ with the official answer, and 8 practice MCQs. Bilingual notes.

Why Chennai waits for October

Monsoon winds are seasonal reversal winds: they change direction with the season.

In the southwest monsoon (June - September) the wind hits the Western Ghats and pours rain on the western slope. Tamil Nadu lies on the leeward side (rain shadow) and gets only meagre rain.

Example: Mangalore on the coast gets about 280 cm; Bengaluru on the leeward side gets only about 50 cm.

How the northeast monsoon forms

By the end of September the pressure belts shift south and the southwest monsoon starts to retreat.

The wind now blows from the land towards the Bay of Bengal. The Coriolis force (caused by the rotation of the earth) deflects it, so it blows from the northeast.

So it is called the northeast monsoon, the post-monsoon or the retreating monsoon: October to December.

Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and south interior Karnataka get good rain, about 35% of their annual total (as given in the textbook). Storms forming in the Bay of Bengal bring rain to many parts of Tamil Nadu; heavy rain, strong winds and storm surge can cause losses on the coast.

TNPSC PYQ (official key) TNPSC

Assertion [A]: Tamil Nadu state remains dry during the South West Monsoon season.
Reason [R]: Tamil Nadu coast lies in the rain shadow area of the Arabian sea current and is parallel to the Bay of Bengal current.

Answer: (B) Both [A] and [R] are true and [R] is the correct explanation of [A].

விடை: (B) [A] மற்றும் [R] இரண்டும் சரி; [R] என்பது [A]-இன் சரியான விளக்கம்.
