Alluvial, black, red and laterite soils in detail (formation, minerals, where they are found, crops), the other four ICAR groups, each soil's share of India, and the soils of Tamil Nadu. Bilingual notes with 7 practice MCQs.

What is soil?

Soil is the uppermost layer of the land surface, made of minerals, organic matter, living organisms, air and water. Its grains are of three kinds: clay, silt and sand. Soils are generally formed by the weathering of rocks.

ICAR: 8 soil groups ICAR: 8

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), set up in 1953, divides the soils of India into eight major groups.

As per the chart in the 10th Geography book. Some other sources put alluvial soil first (about 40%); for the exam, follow your source book.

The four major soils

1

Alluvial soil வண்டல் மண் 22.16% of India

  • Formed from sediments deposited by streams and rivers.
  • Khadar: new, light coloured, more siliceous. Bhangar: older alluvium with lime nodules, clayey, dark.
  • Rich in potash, phosphoric acid, lime and carbon compounds; poor in nitrogen.
  • Where: Ganga and Brahmaputra valleys; plains of UP, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, West Bengal, Bihar; river mouths of the east coast.

2

Black soil (Regur) கரிசல் மண் 29.69% of India

  • Derived from the basalts of the Deccan trap.
  • Black colour due to titanium and iron. Sticky when wet; high moisture retentivity.
  • Rich in potash, lime, aluminium, calcium and magnesium; poor in nitrogen, phosphoric acid and humus.
  • Where: Maharashtra and Malwa plateaus, Kathiawar peninsula, Telangana and Rayalaseema, northern Karnataka.
  • Crops: cotton (also called black cotton soil), millets, tobacco, sugarcane.
3

Red soil செம்மண் 28% of India

  • Formed by the decomposition of ancient crystalline rocks like granites and gneisses.
  • Iron oxide gives the red colour. Rich in iron and magnesium.
  • Deficient in nitrogen, humus, phosphoric acid and lime. Light, porous and friable.
  • Where: eastern Deccan plateau, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Chota Nagpur plateau.
  • Crops: wheat, rice, cotton, sugarcane, pulses.
4

Laterite soil சரளை மண் 2.62% of India

  • Formed where alternate wet and hot dry conditions prevail, by the process of leaching.
  • Mainly hydrated oxides of iron and aluminium.
  • More acidic on higher areas and cannot retain moisture there.
  • Where: Assam hills, hill summits of Kerala and Karnataka, Eastern Ghats, Odisha.
  • Crops: coffee, rubber, cashewnut, tapioca.
