On 15 August 2026, his first Independence Day as Chief Minister, C. Joseph Vijay hoisted the national flag at Fort St George, Chennai, and raised the State's freedom fighters' pension to Rs.23,000 a month and the family pension to Rs.12,500 a month. The special pension for descendants of four Tamil freedom-struggle figures went up to Rs.11,500, and two benefits for ex-servicemen were raised. The Government Orders for these measures had already been issued, so the new rates are in force.

Tamil Nadu raises these pensions almost every Independence Day. On 15 August 2025, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin raised the State freedom fighters' pension from Rs.21,000 to Rs.22,000, the family pension from Rs.11,500 to Rs.12,000, and the special pension for descendants from Rs.10,500 to Rs.11,000; the orders were issued in September 2025 with effect from 15 August 2025 (The Hindu, 18 September 2025). The 2026 rise adds Rs.1,000 to the freedom fighters' pension and Rs.500 each to the family pension and the special pension.
The Chief Minister gave the Thagaisaal Thamizhar Award to former Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president M. Krishnasamy. The award, started in 2021, carries Rs.10 lakh and a certificate; earlier winners include N. Sankaraiah (2021), R. Nallakannu (2022), K. Veeramani (2023) and Kumari Ananthan (2024). He also gave the Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Award to diabetologist Dr. V. Mohan and the Kalpana Chawla Award for courage to Navsheen Banu of Coimbatore (Economic Times, 15 August 2026).
