What Happened at Haifa on 23 September 1918

  • The Battle of Haifa was fought on 23 September 1918, in the closing phase of the First World War. In purely military terms it was a small action, but a tactically significant one.
  • The port was taken by a cavalry charge of the 15th Imperial Service Cavalry Brigade, made up of the Jodhpur, Mysore and Hyderabad Lancers, against forces that were principally Ottoman.
  • The riders charged up the slopes of Mount Carmel. Military historians count it among the last great cavalry charges anywhere, fought in an age that was already passing to the machine gun and the tank.
  • Contemporary British war diaries record the action as decisive in securing the port city and in opening the Allied advance northwards to Damascus.
  • The scale of Indian participation in that war is the wider fact behind the battle. More than a million Indians served overseas, from Flanders to Mesopotamia, and over 74,000 died in a war that was not of their own making.

Reclaiming a Colonial Era Victory as India's Own

  • Since Independence, Haifa has become part of a broader effort to reclaim India's military history from the shadow of the empire. The soldiers were colonial subjects, but the courage and the sacrifice belong to India's national story.
  • Commemorating the battle is therefore described as an act of historical recovery, an assertion that Indian agency existed even inside the constraints of imperial command.
  • A First World War memorial in the national capital has been renamed Teen Murti Haifa Chowk. The renaming is a way of saying that Indian soldiers shaped world events long before India became a sovereign republic.
  • The episode also shows how postcolonial nations reinterpret their own pasts to assert dignity and continuity, choosing which parts of a colonial record to claim and how to frame them.
  • The author of the piece is Shashi Tharoor, Member of the Lok Sabha for Thiruvananthapuram, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs and author of An Era of Darkness: The British Empire in India.

The Moral Complication and the Palestinian Objection

  • The complication sits in the command structure. The Indian forces fought under British command, under a flag that was not their own, and many Palestinian Arabs were on the Ottoman side of the same battle.
  • The soldiers had no say in the political consequences of what they won. Their victory helped secure British control over Palestine, and so the ground on which the Balfour Declaration was implemented and the transformations that led to the creation of Israel took place.
  • For many Palestinians this is therefore not a story of liberation but of dispossession. Their representatives have told Indians who celebrate the battle, in plain words, that they did not ask to be liberated, a statement aimed not at the bravery of the soldiers but at the imperial project that bravery was embedded in.
  • The Palestinian Ambassador to India, Abdullah Mohammed Abu Shawesh, describes history as a tool for affirming roots and shaping the future, and says Palestinians are highly sensitive to any attempt to manipulate it because such attempts touch their right to exist and to determine their own future.
  • He sees a clear Israeli effort to link contemporary India with the history of Israel's establishment, questions India's embrace of that narrative, and argues that the Indian soldiers were not heroes or valorous martyrs but victims of British colonial exploitation, part of the longer story that led to the Nakba.

Three Memories of One Victory, and a Historians' Dispute

  • For Israel, the memory of Indian cavalry liberating Haifa has been woven into a narrative of gratitude and friendship, marked by memorials and annual ceremonies, and Haifa now works as a symbol of the India-Israel relationship.
  • Indian leaders have visited the Haifa memorial and Israeli officials have spoken warmly of the Indian role in the city's history, which shows how historical memory can be mobilised to strengthen a present day strategic partnership.
  • The credit itself is disputed among historians. Some Israeli scholars argue the Indian role has been overstated and that the real credit belongs to British and Australian soldiers, a view the author reads as partly reflecting discomfort at owing so much to colonised cavalrymen.
  • Indian military historians answer by pointing to British war records that credit the Indian cavalry with the decisive breakthrough. The disagreement is not merely academic; it reflects national pride and the wish to shape narratives that reinforce present day identities.
  • Indians carry their own ambivalence, pride in the courage of the soldiers alongside discomfort that Indian blood was shed for an imperial project that contributed to the dispossession of another people. The piece concludes that Haifa is above all a site of contested memory, and that a mature historical consciousness holds several truths at once rather than choosing one narrative.

An Era of Darkness: The British Empire in India நூலின் ஆசிரியர்.
