Tamil Nadu remembers Tiruppur Kumaran as the man who protected the flag; the man who hoisted it is Bhashyam Iyengar, known as "Arya". He raised the national flag over Fort St George, the seat of the Tamil Nadu Secretariat, in an act that has become one of the most striking episodes of the freedom movement in Madras.
On the night of January 25, 1932, he and a companion bought tickets to the Elphinstone theatre on Mount Road. When the show ended at midnight, the crowd leaving included policemen who had finished duty at Fort St George and come to watch a film. Dressed deliberately in a khaki shirt and khaki half-trousers, Bhashyam merged with them and walked into the fort unchallenged.
As the guards returned to their quarters he slipped away towards the flag mast, 200 feet tall. Footholds ran up only the first 140 feet; the remaining 60 feet was bare iron pipe. He gripped the pipe and climbed, clung to the top the way a monitor lizard locks on to a surface, shook out the flag tied at his waist and fastened it to the mast, then slid back down and returned to Thambu Chetty Street.
By the next morning the fort office was in uproar, with senior officials gathered at the foot of the mast. January 26 had been observed as Purna Swaraj Day since 1930, so the flag flew on precisely the day the movement claimed as its own. It was also Bhashyam's own birthday, which he had chosen to mark in this fashion.
The Flag He Made Himself
He first went looking for a flag along the Triplicane bazaar street, climbing in and out of cloth shops asking whether an Indian national flag could be had. A few traders brought out small flags they were keeping secretly for sale, but none matched the size he had pictured for the fort mast.
So he made his own. He bought a large four-muzham veshti and picked up saffron, green and blue dye powders at a colour-powder shop, then returned to his room on Thambu Chetty Street. He soaked one end of the cloth in saffron and the other in green, drew the charkha in blue at the centre, and wrote across it that India was breathing the air of freedom from that day onward. He dried the flag, folded it and wound it around his waist.
Before setting out he went back to Triplicane and instructed Venugopal, son-in-law of the freedom fighter Subramania Siva, to follow him at a distance wherever he went, so that there would be a witness to whatever happened that night.
From Erukkattur to the Freedom Movement
Bhashyam's family came from Erukkattur village, between Thiruvarur and Mannargudi. He was the fifth son of Kuppusamy Iyengar and Chenbaga Lakshmi, born at his mother's family home in Serangulam, Mannargudi.
He studied in the B.A. Junior class at National College, Tiruchi, between 1924 and 1928, where he and friends including Anantharaman argued that the country's liberation would require taking up arms. When the Simon Commission came to India in 1928-29, he mobilised college students in protest. Principal Saranathan fined him five rupees as punishment; Bhashyam refused to pay it and abandoned his college education altogether.
He founded an organisation called the Gentleman Farmers' League in the Panchanthangi hill valley area, then moved to Madras and joined the Congress, taking part in the picketing of toddy shops in the Ice House area and in the burning of foreign cloth.
Prison, the Lash, and the Painter's Hand
He was arrested repeatedly and was assaulted several times after arguing with British soldiers. In jail he went on hunger strike for the rights of prisoners. It was the intervention of Subhas Chandra Bose that won those rights for the prisoners, and Bose who persuaded Bhashyam to end his fast.
Transferred to Bellary jail, he knocked down a British officer who had been tormenting prisoners, striking him with his iron-shod sandal; the officer fainted as the surrounding policemen seized Bhashyam. The next day, in the presence of the revived officer, he was tied upside down in a triangle and flogged. At every stroke of the lash he called out "Vande Mataram".
Bhashyam was also a painter. He drew the authorised portrait of Bharathiar, painted national leaders including Mahatma Gandhi and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, and produced the drawing for a statue of Gandhi. He spent his last years in Mylapore and died on March 5, 1999.
