The El Nino Southern Oscillation is a climate phenomenon of the Pacific Ocean that recurs every two to seven years. It is a Pacific event, but its effects are global, which is why Indian weather agencies track it at all.
The El Nino phase refers to the surface waters of the Pacific off the western coast of Peru and Ecuador becoming warmer than average. In an ordinary event those waters warm by about 0.5 degrees Celsius.
This year the rise has reached 2 degrees Celsius, four times the usual departure, and weather agencies worldwide are tracking what they are calling a super El Nino.
The all India rule is the one most students already know: in an El Nino year India has, on average, recorded deficient rainfall and a higher incidence of droughts. The point of this article is that the average hides a State that behaves differently.
Why Tamil Nadu Breaks the All India Rule
Against that average, Tamil Nadu has reported a strikingly different pattern. When an El Nino shifts global wind and pressure patterns, it can supercharge the northeast monsoon over Tamil Nadu, bringing extreme rainfall and cyclones rather than drought.
The example to carry is 2015, one of the strongest El Nino events in recent decades. India that year faced a weak southwest monsoon, while Tamil Nadu was hit by devastating floods. Chennai recorded 1,522 mm of rain in just four days, from 1 to 4 December 2015, more than double the normal.
Studies give two main reasons for the divergence. The first is atmospheric: during strong El Nino years, pressure differences between the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea create a wind tunnel effect that drives moist air into coastal Tamil Nadu.
The second is oceanic: when an El Nino coincides with warmer waters in the Bay of Bengal, evaporation increases, and the cyclonic circulations of November and December then release that stored heat as intense, localised rainfall.
For October to December 2026, the expectation set out is that as monsoon winds reverse into the northeasterlies, the El Nino can strengthen the moisture inflow from the Bay of Bengal. In the past this has often produced frequent and heavy rains and cyclones along the Tamil Nadu coast.
The Indian Ocean's Own Driver, and What the Forecast Says
Besides the El Nino, the Indian Ocean has a climate driver of its own, the Indian Ocean Dipole. It is a natural phenomenon in which the equatorial western Ocean experiences abnormal warming while the equatorial eastern Ocean experiences abnormal cooling.
A positive dipole occurs when the western Ocean near Africa becomes warmer than the eastern Ocean near Indonesia. Learn the two anchors, Africa in the west and Indonesia in the east, because the sign of the dipole is defined by which side is the warmer one.
The India Meteorological Department's northeast monsoon outlook has recently reported a neutral dipole and, under the prevailing conditions, forecast normal to above normal rainfall across southern Tamil Nadu.
A caveat the article states explicitly, and it is worth knowing as a limit of forecasting rather than as a failure of it: forecasts are updated when a depression or cyclone develops over the Bay of Bengal and close monitoring becomes essential, because a cyclone's formation involves nonlinear processes and its evolution is hard to predict reliably until the cyclone has fully developed.
What the Ocean Is Doing Now, and How It Is Watched
Scientists monitor the El Nino's progress using satellites that measure sea surface temperature, rainfall and trade winds, combined with readings from buoys, boats, deepwater stations and coastal radars. Together these give a three dimensional picture of how the ocean and the atmosphere are changing.
What the satellite data show so far is unusual warming in the northern Indian Ocean, especially in the southern Bay of Bengal, where sea temperatures have risen by about 1 degree Celsius as of September 2026. That warming is expected to spread northwards in the coming months.
Recent data also show that the entire Indian Ocean is warmer than usual, and the only exceptions are the head Bay and the northern Arabian Sea.
Currents matter as well. Along the Tamil Nadu coast the East India Coastal Current undergoes a seasonal reversal between February and November, a phenomenon described as unique to this region. Normally the equatorial currents of the western Indian Ocean flow eastwards, but in 2026 a westward flow has been observed, which indicates anomalous equatorial forcing.
The reversal alters alongshore transport and contributes to sea surface temperature variations. During the northeast monsoon these circulation shifts and ocean and atmosphere interactions may favour the development of low pressure systems, and when an atmospheric depression meets such a warm ocean, the added heat and moisture supply can allow it to intensify.
There is a feedback loop in an El Nino year that makes the Bay warmer still: winds weaken and skies clear, letting more sunlight heat the ocean, and in the Bay of Bengal a shallow mixed layer and salinity stratification trap that heat, so the water warms faster. As ocean temperatures trend upward, these supercharged events become more likely.
A wider finding places the Indian picture in a global one. The year 2024 saw a record breaking number of heavy and extreme rainfall events worldwide, and unlike previous strong El Nino years it also featured unusual simultaneous warming across the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, which, with a warmer atmosphere, brought extreme rainfall around the world and later into the summer. Models suggest the 2024 pattern, rare today, could become a typical year by 2050 if current warming trends continue.
The gap this leaves is observational, not theoretical. The European Union and Canada announced a real time ocean data collection effort called OceanEye at the United Nations General Assembly. More such efforts are urgently needed, because the ocean remains one of the least observed parts of the earth system; consistent monitoring is what makes it possible to spot these events early.
