The Indian Space Research Organisation successfully launched its advanced earth observation satellite EOS-05 aboard the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle, flight GSLV-F17, on Friday.
Lift-off was at 2.55 a.m. from the second launch pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. The final stage countdown ran for 27 hours 30 minutes and had begun at 11.25 p.m. on 2 September.
About 18 minutes after lift-off the vehicle placed the 2,367 kg satellite in the intended sub-geosynchronous transfer orbit, known as Sub-GTO.
The launcher is a three stage vehicle standing 51.7 metres tall, with a cryogenic third stage and a lift-off mass of 420.5 tonnes.
This was the 19th mission of the GSLV and the 107th launch from the Sriharikota spaceport. Of the nineteen GSLV flights so far, 13 have succeeded and 6 have failed.
At 2,367 kg, EOS-05 is the heaviest satellite the GSLV has ever carried. ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan said the first flight of the vehicle, GSLV-D1, carried a payload of only 1,536 kg, and that the gain since then has come from optimising the structural mass and improving the propulsion systems.
"I am very happy to announce that the GSLV-F17 vehicle has successfully and precisely injected the advanced earth observation satellite EOS-05 into the intended and required orbit," Dr. Narayanan said.
On the satellite's condition he said that all the valves are operating perfectly, the solar panel is deployed and the health of the satellite is perfectly all right, and that in the coming days the orbit would be raised and the satellite placed in the geo platform for national activities.
The satellite is at present circling in an orbit with a low point of about 171 km and a high point of about 31,026 km. Its own onboard thruster motors will raise it in stages to the final working orbit.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it another outstanding achievement of ISRO and a proud moment for the country, and said the growing partnership between ISRO and Indian industry adds new strength and dimension to the space programme.
What EOS-05 Is Meant to Do
EOS-05, also designated GISAT-1A, is India's first imaging satellite designed to watch the earth from geosynchronous orbit, about 36,000 km above the surface. ISRO's chairman said that once operationalised it becomes the country's first dedicated imaging satellite working from that orbit, supplying important strategic data.
It has an operational life of nine years and carries multi-band operating capabilities.
Dubbed an eye in the sky, it will provide near real-time imagery for agriculture, environment monitoring and disaster management, and will return data on weather, cloudbursts, marine monitoring and mineral resource research.
The capability that matters most is repetition. The satellite can image a chosen part of the earth four or five times a day in near real time, which is what allows precautionary action to be taken quickly when a disaster is building.
It will also keep continuous watch over India's border areas and supply the information the country's security establishment needs, which is why the mission is described as strategic rather than only scientific.
Why the Orbit Is the Whole Point
At about 36,000 km a satellite takes as long to go round the earth as the earth takes to turn once. It therefore stays above the same longitude and can look at the same region continuously, instead of sweeping past it in a narrow strip and returning only after days.
India's earlier remote sensing satellites, among them Cartosat, Scatsat and RISAT, work from a low earth orbit or a sun synchronous orbit. As of February the country had 21 remote sensing satellites in operation, and every one of them was in one of those two orbits.
The trade is between detail and persistence. A low orbit sits close and sees fine detail but passes over a place for only a few minutes. A geosynchronous perch gives up some of that detail and buys the ability to keep looking, which is exactly what four or five images a day of the same region means.
A rocket does not carry a satellite straight to that height. It leaves it in a highly elliptical transfer orbit, and the satellite fires its own motors at the far end of that ellipse to lift the near end, repeating the burn until the orbit is nearly circular at the working altitude. That is why the mission is not finished on launch day, and why the chairman spoke of raising the orbit in the days ahead.
The Failure It Replaces, and the Drought of Launches Before It
EOS-05 replaces EOS-03, the geo imaging satellite also called GISAT, which was lost when GSLV-F10 failed on 12 August 2021 because of a technical fault in the cryogenic stage. ISRO said at the time that the satellite would be rebuilt and flown again, and EOS-05 is that rebuild.
The success also ends an anxious stretch. ISRO had not carried out a launch since the failure of the PSLV-C62 mission carrying the EOS-N1 earth observation satellite on 12 January 2026.
That came after the failure of PSLV-C61 on 18 May 2025. Following the two back to back failures the agency took a cautious approach and held back from further launches.
Seven missions, the GSLV-F17 and EOS-05 flight among them, had been scheduled for the first quarter of 2026, but no satellite was launched in that period. Only two launches have been carried out this year so far, and GSLV-F17 came about eight months after the EOS-N1 failure.
Speaking at Sriharikota, Dr. Narayanan said the rocket launch pad being built at Kulasekarapattinam in Thoothukudi district is government infrastructure, and that only its maintenance will be handed to private parties. ISRO staff and private staff will both work there, and both ISRO satellites and private satellites will be launched from it.
On the human spaceflight programme he said about 8,000 tests for Gaganyaan have been completed, and that the agency is preparing the uncrewed spacecraft launch as the next step.
