Why He Is Remembered as More Than a Poet

  • While serving on a school-textbook revision committee, Kavimani once asked colleagues to close a book carrying a lesson on the parrot, then asked how many toes a parrot has in front and how many behind.
  • The committee answered "three in front, one behind" - and the book's own illustration showed the same wrong count.
  • He corrected them, showing a live parrot has two toes in front and two behind, leaving the group visibly startled.
  • This habit of examining even ordinary things closely marks out Kavimani Desika Vinayakam Pillai, remembered today mainly as a children's poet, as no less a scholar than a poet.

Pioneering Epigraphist and Historian

  • From a young age he was deeply drawn to South Indian history and epigraphy.
  • The spark came from Ganesa Pillai, an official in the Travancore government's epigraphy department and assistant to Rao Bahadur Sundaram Pillai, who once arrived in Therur carrying a bundle of inscription papers.
  • With his brother-in-law's help, Kavimani secretly copied notes from this bundle without Ganesa Pillai's knowledge; before Ganesa Pillai even returned to Trivandrum, those notes appeared as an article titled "Sungan Kadai" in the weekly "Travancore Times", published under the pen name "Nanjil Naadan" - startling Ganesa Pillai himself when he read it.
  • This early episode became the foundation for Kavimani's later expertise in history and epigraphy, and for the rebuttal essays he went on to write.
  • His English essay "Kandalur Salai" stands as proof of this scholarship, alongside research articles on inscriptions and on the palm-leaf records of the Azhagiya Pandipuram Mudaliar family, published in journals such as the "Kerala Society Papers" and the "Journal of Oriental Research".
  • His article on the Nanjil Nadu Vellalars in the "Malabar Review" is especially notable; his epigraphical research is arguably his greatest gift to Tamil scholarship, and it fed significantly into the research of Vaiyapuri Pillai.

Voice of the Kanyakumari Tamil Movement and a New Kind of Tamil Verse

  • His grounding in history let Kavimani play a real part in the movement for Tamil Nadu's southern border, delivering the inaugural address at the Southern Border Conference held in Kanyakumari in 1950, pressing the case for the rights of the Tamil language and Tamils.
  • He spoke from public platforms against the hardships Tamils faced under Travancore princely rule, using Sangam-era literature to argue that Nanjil Nadu and Kanyakumari had been Tamil land since antiquity.
  • Kavimani became widely known chiefly through his poetry collections: "Malarum Maalaiyum", "Asia Jyothi", "Umar Khayyam Paadalgal", "Deviyin Keerthanangal", and "Nanjil Naattu Marumakkal Vazhi Maanmiyam".
  • Just as Bharathiyar's "new poetry" fused word and meaning inseparably after two thousand years of an older Tamil poetic tradition, Kavimani too composed verse that blended sense and sound into something newly fragrant, and was the first to compose literary couplets across a range of rhythmic structures.
  • His verses appeared in magazines including "Tamizhan", "Senthamizh Selvi", "Lakshmi", "Kalaimagal", "Kumaran", "Ananda Vikatan", "Lokopakari", "Eezhakesari", and "Tamil Nesan".
  • Because Kanyakumari district then lay within the Travancore princely state, many Tamils elsewhere did not know of him until T.K. Chidambaranatha Mudaliar (T.K.C.), through his "Vattathotti" column, gathered Kavimani's verses into a garland and carried them to a wider Tamil readership.

Reformer, Musician and an Overdue Recognition

  • Kavimani's Tamil rendering of Persian poet Omar Khayyam, weighed against Edward FitzGerald's celebrated translation and against renderings such as Govinda Theerthar's, read so naturally it seemed the first such book to ever appear in Tamil; he brought the same grace to "Asia Jyothi" (on the Buddha's life), prompting the poet Namakkal Kavignar to praise him for telling the Buddha's wisdom "in beautiful Tamil, and that is enough."
  • To strengthen the Tamil music movement, Kavimani composed numerous keerthanas; when some concert singers claimed the absence of Tamil keerthanas was why they didn't sing Tamil songs, Kavimani was among those whose work silenced that excuse, a little-known fact.
  • These keerthanas, published in journals including "Ananda Vikatan", were later compiled into "Deviyin Keerthanangal", with music set by Tiruchi musicologist K.C. Thyagarajan.
  • Concerned about the social ills the marumakkathayam (matrilineal inheritance) system caused among the Vellalars of Nanjil Nadu, Kavimani wrote the satirical poem "Marumakkal Vazhi Maanmiyam" in eleven cantos, serialised in "Tamizhan" magazine edited by Pandit S. Muthusami Pillai; the work is credited with contributing significantly to the 1927 law reforming the Vellalars' matrilineal inheritance system.
  • Recognition came late: though he lived to 78, the title "Kavimani" was conferred only at 64, after which figures such as Raja Sir Muthiah Chettiar celebrated him, yet he calmly declined the court-poet position C. Rajagopalachari (Rajaji) had been ready to offer him.
  • A memorial was built at Therur in 1954; the Tamil Nadu government nationalised his works in 1998; the Government of India honoured him with a postage stamp in 2005. His truer honour, this article argues, lies in looking past the single label of "children's poet" to his full range as a scholar - which his 150th birth anniversary is the moment to do.
