The Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology has concluded, after a detailed study, that a brick structure lying on the bed of the Kollidam river at Koogur in Tiruchi district is a water regulation structure of the Sangam period.
The structure lies close to the ancient Kallanai. It became partly visible only after the water level in the Kollidam receded last month; until then the river covered it.
The Kollidam is the northern branch of the Cauvery. The Kallanai stands where the river divides between the two, sending the measured share into the delta for irrigation and passing the surplus down the Kollidam towards the sea.
The Kallanai itself is credited to the early Chola ruler Karikala and is still in use, so the stretch of river on which the new find sits has been worked and reworked for water control over a very long period.
The department's Joint Director confirmed the circumstances of the find: it was the fall in the water level, and not an excavation, that first brought the brickwork into view.
How the Structure Was Studied
A team of four from the department carried out the study on 22 and 23 August: V.P. Yathees Kumar, Joint Director; K. Rajan, Academic Adviser; Prabhakaran, Assistant Director; and Vasanthkumar, Archaeological Officer.
The team used sonar to identify submerged extensions of the structure and any other structural remains near it. Sonar sends sound pulses through water and reads the returning echo, so it maps what cannot be seen from the bank.
Trained divers then examined the underwater portions directly, recording the dimensions of the brickwork and the technique by which it had been built.
The two methods answer different questions. Sonar shows where to look and how far the structure runs; the divers establish what is actually there. Together they allow an underwater site to be documented without draining or dredging the river.
The Two Sections and Their Brickwork
The structure has two sections. The first runs west to east for about six metres and then curves northwards for 8.3 metres.
That first section is about 1.75 metres wide and 1.04 metres high, and 13 courses of brick are visible in it. A course is a single horizontal layer of bricks, so the count is a direct measure of how much of the original height still stands clear of the sand.
The northern portion of the first section remains largely buried under sand, which means the recorded length is a minimum and not the full extent of the structure.
The second section lies about 11 metres from the first and runs parallel to it. It is about 2.15 metres wide, runs east to west for 6.5 metres and then curves northwards for about 4.5 metres.
Six courses of brick are visible in the western portion of the second section and three in the eastern portion.
The bricks themselves measure about 39 to 43 centimetres in length, 20 to 22 centimetres in width and 6 to 7 centimetres in thickness. Brick dimensions are one of the standard classes of evidence archaeologists use when placing a structure in a period, which is why the study records them to the centimetre.
The Kurampu, and the Technology That Replaced It
The study links the find to the kurampu, a water management structure named in literary sources and comparable to a check dam.
A check dam sits across the flow and holds the water back only far enough to raise its level, so that it can be led away into a channel. It does not impound a reservoir behind it, and that is what separates it from a storage dam.
On a wide, seasonal river that is exactly the work that needs doing. The flow does not have to be stored; it has to be lifted and turned, and a low structure across the bed is enough to do it.
The study notes that brick structures of this kind were later replaced by stone anicuts and by iron sluices. That is the sequence of irrigation technology in the Cauvery delta: brickwork, then dressed stone, then metal gates that can be raised and lowered to control the quantity released.
The value of the find is that it sets a measurable object against a word that had survived mainly in literature. The kurampu can now be described in metres and courses of brick, and not only cited from a text.
