Syllabus: Prelims Unit VI - History, Culture, Heritage and Socio-Political Movements in Tamil Nadu (40 Questions)

The Site and Its Excavation

  • On the banks of the Vaippar river near Sangarankovil, in Tenkasi district, the Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology (TNSDA) has been excavating at Malayadipatti (under Karisathan panchayat), near Karivalamvanthanallur, since April 2026.
  • Malayadipatti is one of 8 sites across Tamil Nadu for which the Union Government approved fresh excavation since March; digging has covered 16 trenches across 2 excavation blocks over about 3 months.
  • The site's importance was first recognised nearly a century ago after Roman gold coins were reported from the region; in 1930, 6 Roman-origin gold coins were found near Sivalingapuram. Tirunelveli Deputy Collector L.A. Cammiade later surveyed the area, and the Madras Museum's 1932-33 annual report documented glass beads and burial urns collected from local residents.
  • Those early references have acquired fresh significance as archaeologists now find the settlement was not merely inhabited over centuries but also functioned as a manufacturing centre.

An Unbroken Sequence of Habitation

  • Unlike northern Tamil Nadu, where archaeology shows a clearer Neolithic-to-Iron-Age transition, this Tenkasi site shows continuous occupation from the microlithic (fine stone) age through the Iron Age into the Early Historic period, bypassing the Neolithic and Chalcolithic phases - a sequence that mirrors discoveries at sites such as Mangudi, Sivagalai and Adichanallur.
  • The excavation also established that the ancient settlement's habitation area and burial-ground area were located in the same place.

The Brick Structures

  • A square, brick-built well with stone steps was uncovered, its bricks measuring roughly 40 cm x 20 cm x 7 cm; only about 2 metres of its depth has been examined so far.
  • Separately, one of the excavation's most significant finds is a large brick structure measuring 8.7 metres by 4.2 metres, with descending steps, believed to have served either as an underground granary or a rainwater harvesting tank - a design that has prompted archaeologists to consider sophisticated water management despite the site's proximity to the Vaippar river.
  • The dimensions and style of these bricks resemble those found at Keeladi, Alagankulam and Poompuhar, suggesting the structures belong to the Early Historic or Sangam period, estimated at around 2,500 years old.

Evidence of a Craft and Manufacturing Economy

  • More than 100 artefacts have been recovered over the past three months, according to School Education and Tamil Development Minister A. Rajmohan.
  • Finds include hematite (used for iron extraction), iron implements and iron slag, large quantities of glass beads, terracotta figurines, graffiti-marked pottery, hopscotch pieces, black-and-red ware, shell bangles, terracotta spindle whorls (used in weaving), terracotta discs, terracotta and coral beads, a gold bead, rectangular gaming pieces, and copper coins, alongside intact pottery, black-painted lidded vessels and perforated bowls.
  • Minister Rajmohan said the structural evidence suggested that iron tool-making, bead manufacturing, shell-bangle production and weaving workshops were available in the region during the Sangam period, reflecting the "technological sophistication, artisanal excellence and economic vitality" of ancient Tamil society.

A Burial Pot That Bridges Archaeology and Tamil Literature

  • Archaeologists unearthed a red-slipped burial pot decorated with painted peacocks on its shoulder; molar and premolar teeth recovered outside the vessel, along with a black-and-red ware pot placed beneath it, suggest it served as a burial urn.
  • Peacocks have previously been associated with burials at Poruthal and even Harappan Cemetery-H contexts; similar vessels found at Harappa, Hulas and Bhirrana depict peacocks with recumbent human figures enclosed within their bodies, suggesting ritual significance.
  • Sangam literature, particularly Akananuru, also refers to decorating memorial stones with peacock feathers, lending literary resonance to this archaeological evidence.

Dating and Scientific Verification

  • Carbon-dating samples have been sent to the Beta Analytical Laboratory in Florida for scientific dating; officials estimate the well at about 2,500 years old, with some objects dated to around the 5th or 6th century BCE.
  • Ancestral burial urns ("muthumakkal thazhi") containing human bones were also recovered, along with bronze and copper objects including high-quality bronze plate fragments.

Wider Significance

  • The evidence emerging from Karivalamvanthanallur suggests this was not simply a habitation site but a specialised production centre connected to wider trade networks, located along an ancient route linking the eastern and western coasts; officials estimate the settlement spread across roughly 50 acres.
  • The findings add to Tamil Nadu's growing body of archaeological evidence: Keeladi's carbon dating had already pushed the Sangam era further back than previously believed, while Sivagalai yielded iron implements dated to 3345 BCE, among the earliest known evidence of smelted iron in the world.
  • The excavation is only about halfway through; officials say continued archaeological work and scientific studies will further establish the antiquity of Tamil civilisation.
