The 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has gone to Henri Kagan of France and Kenso Soai of Japan, named on Monday as joint winners.
The citation is for work showing how a chemical reaction can amplify a small asymmetry present in molecules. Both laureates worked on chiral molecules, and between them they turned a laboratory curiosity into the basis on which medicines are now made.
Kagan's contribution came in 1986, when he and his team made a landmark discovery involving catalysts, which are substances that influence a reaction. They showed that a small imbalance in the handedness of a catalyst could bias the end products of that reaction out of all proportion to the size of the imbalance.
That finding was put straight to work. It paved the way for chemists to tune a reaction so that it yields the wanted form of a drug, an agrochemical or a fragrance rather than a mixture of both forms.
Almost a decade later, Soai and his colleagues showed something different and stranger: that a chiral molecule can speed up the formation of other molecules of its own handedness. A product of the reaction, in other words, promotes more of itself in the same mirror form.
Soai's result carried beyond the laboratory bench. It expanded the understanding of why so many molecules essential to life prefer just one of the two possible forms, a question that sits at the edge of chemistry and the origin of life.
The newspaper's own headline described the pair as the duo who expanded the study of mirrored molecules, which is a fair summary of a prize given for two findings separated by about ten years.
Chirality: a Molecule With a Left Hand and a Right Hand
A chiral molecule is one that can exist in two mirror image forms. The standard picture is a pair of hands: your left hand is the mirror image of your right, yet no matter how you turn them, one will not sit exactly on top of the other.
That property is what the word chirality names, and the two forms of such a molecule are called its enantiomers. Chemically they are built from exactly the same atoms joined in the same order; only the arrangement in space differs.
Handedness is the everyday word for the same idea, and it is the word the Nobel citation uses. A reaction run without any bias usually makes both forms in roughly equal measure, which is the problem the two laureates solved from opposite ends.
The idea to carry into an answer is asymmetric synthesis: making one chosen handed form in preference to the other. Kagan's route was to build the bias into the catalyst; Soai's was to show that the product itself can carry the bias forward.
A catalyst, for the record, is a substance that influences the speed or the outcome of a reaction. Kagan's insight was that its own handedness is not neutral: a slight excess of one form of the catalyst steers the whole reaction.
Why Handedness Decides How a Drug Works
The reason chirality matters in medicine is that the body is itself chiral. The proteins in our bodies are made mostly of amino acids that take just one of the two mirror image arrangements.
The enzymes that catalyse the chemical reactions inside our cells are chiral, and so are the receptors that respond to chemical trigger signals. A chiral drug meets these molecules the way a hand meets a glove.
The consequence is direct. The differently handed forms of the same drug can interact with those enzymes and receptors to produce different responses, and only one of those responses may be the one wanted.
That is exactly the difficulty the prize answers. Before these findings, a chemist who needed the desirably handed form of a drug had to manufacture it against the natural tendency of a reaction to produce both. Kagan's catalytic route and Soai's self amplifying route are the two ways round it.
The same logic reaches past medicine. Agrochemicals and fragrances are named in the citation for the same reason: in each, one handed form does the work and the other is at best wasted material.
The Prize Itself: What the Nobel Statutes Allow
The Nobel Prizes were instituted by the will of Alfred Nobel and first awarded in 1901. The chemistry prize is decided by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
The prize in economic sciences is not one of the original five. It was instituted later by Sweden's central bank and is awarded in Nobel's memory, which is why it is not strictly a Nobel Prize.
One rule shapes every science prize: the Nobel Foundation's statutes prohibit dividing a prize among more than three individuals. A discovery made by a hundred people must still be attached to at most three names.
Less widely known is that the same statutes do allow a prize to be awarded to an organisation, an option that has repeatedly been passed over in the sciences.
The point was argued this week over the companion prize. The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics went to Francis Halzen alone for the IceCube neutrino observatory, built and run by a collaboration of over 400 experts from 14 countries spanning astrophysics, engineering and software development.
It is not the first time. In 2017 the physics prize went to three scientists for the detection of gravitational waves, work that likewise needed a collaboration of hundreds. The criticism is that a rule written in another century now rewards individual talent for collective achievement.
