The 204th avatara day of Ramalinga Adigalar, known as Vallalar, was kept at Vadalur in Cuddalore district on Monday, 5 October, with special worship. The day is marked as the day of his avatara, not merely as a birthday.
At the Vallalar Deiva Nilayam, near the Gnana Sabai, the Sanmarga flag was hoisted on a new flagstaff 39 feet high, built by the people of Parvathipuram village at a cost of Rs. 25 lakh and installed on 23 August.
The villagers brought the flag in procession from their Mariamman temple, carrying the ceremonial trays, and hoisted it on the new flagstaff before the worship began.
The Vallalar World Centre at Vadalur held a triple festival on the same day: the avatara day festival, the opening of the Centre's 44th year, and a function honouring its senior office bearers with awards. V. M. Suriyamurthi, its president, presided, and senior office bearer A. Rajendran was among those honoured by the special guest Dr. P. Saravanan.
The jothi darshan was given on the Poosam star of the Tamil month of Purattasi. At Vadalur on Monday night, between 7.45 p.m. and 8.45 p.m., the screens of the sanctum were drawn aside six times, and hundreds of Sanmarga devotees and people from Vadalur and the surrounding areas took part.
The Dharmasalai, the free feeding house at Vadalur, and the giving of annadhanam were part of the day, as they are part of the teaching itself.
The Vallalar Kolgai Parappu Mandram held its 19th year grand conference alongside the avatara day festival. Industrialist Raju Mariappan presided and Gnanalaya Vallalar Kottam Gnanananda Swamigal inaugurated it; welfare scheme assistance was distributed and the annadhanam begun, and the forum's president Kannadasan gave the vote of thanks.
Vallalar and the Suddha Sanmarga Path
Ramalinga Adigalar appeared in 1823 and is called Thiru Arutprakasa Vallalar. Two epithets recur in the tributes paid on the day: Arutperunjothi, the vast light of grace, and Thanipperunkarunai, the unique great compassion.
Suddha Sanmarga, the pure true path he taught, rests on jeeva karunyam, compassion towards every living being. From that single principle follow the crossing of the differences of caste and religion, the loving of every life as one's own, and the placing of the relief of hunger above ritual.
Giving food to a hungry life is the service of God. That formulation was quoted on the day, and it is the reason the Dharmasalai at Vadalur, a hearth kept alight so that whoever comes is fed without being asked who they are, is the institution the teaching produced.
Hunger is a matter of human rights, and that is what Vallalar taught the world, the Dinamani editor said in his address; his argument was that it was never grasped as a question of rights.
He was outstanding in creative power as well. Next after Kamban, he gave the largest number of songs to Tamil literature, and he is the forerunner of literature written in Tamil prose.
He began every one of his letters with the Pillaiyar Suzhi, and the numbers that appear in those letters are all written in Tamil numerals.
Ooran Adigal searched out and collected those letters. They are preserved today, together with Ooran Adigal's own books, in a separate hall at the Kumaraguru College of Technology in Coimbatore.
Nearly two hundred years on, the whole history of Vallalar is still being recovered. Events, works and records about him keep coming to light, which is itself a statement about how a tradition is preserved and how much of one can be lost.
The line most quoted on the day is the one in which the poet says he withered whenever he saw a withered crop. The Vice President wrote that this line conveyed jeeva karunyam and the oneness of souls to the world.
Four Reformers of One Century, and the One Who Came First
Four reformers appeared one after another in the nineteenth century: Vallalar in 1823, Swami Dayananda in 1824, Sri Narayana Guru in 1856 and Swami Vivekananda in 1863.
The recognition and the regard that the three later men won across India did not come to the one who appeared first, and the address read that as a loss worth grieving over rather than as a question of merit.
The reason offered is not that his thought was smaller. It is that his philosophy and his messages were not carried out of Tamil Nadu, and the fault was placed squarely on those who came after him.
Vallalar ought to be known as the identity of Tamil Nadu and known worldwide, the editor said, and we failed to raise him to a national stature.
The comparison the newspaper's own headline was built on: the Buddha's fame reached the world many years after he had gone, and the light of Asia who appeared after the Buddha is Arutprakasa Vallalar. Carrying him and his Suddha Sanmarga teaching to the world was described as a duty that remains.
A second comparison came from Tamil Valarchi Kazhagam head Ma. Rasendiran: Vallalar is the Bharati of the nineteenth century and Bharati is the Vallalar of the twentieth. Both stood against caste discrimination and both insisted that people's need for food be met; in preaching compassion, he said, no one stands beside Vallalar.
The image offered by the advocate who presided: as a cloud forms over the sea and rains on the people, Vallalar poured down a great rain of wisdom in his own time, and the task now is to absorb that thought and carry it into today's society.
204 years after he appeared, Tamils and the Tamil feeling should celebrate him, and Vallalar festivals should be held publicly on a large scale, the address concluded.
What Was Said on the Day
The Chennai function was held on Monday at the University of Madras campus, on behalf of the University's Department of Saiva Siddhanta, its Department of Philosophy, and the Chennai Saiva Siddhanta Perumandram.
Ko. Saravanan, head of the Department of Saiva Siddhanta, gave the introductory address. S. Saravanakumaran, a former Indian Revenue Service officer and an advocate of the Madras High Court, presided.
The book released was 'Vallal Ramalingarin Sanmargap Paadam' by Dr. Ma. Ezhumalai, brought out on behalf of the Saiva Siddhanta Perumandram. Ma. Rasendiran, head of the Tamil Valarchi Kazhagam, released it and S. Saravanakumaran received it.
Dinamani's editor Ki. Vaidyanathan took part as the special invitee and gave the main address: Vallalar was a philosopher of the first rank, a creator, and a thinker on social equality, a great man who placed before us the duty of preserving Indian culture.
Dr. Oppilaa Mathivaanan, a member of the Tamil Valarchi Kazhagam, gave the vote of thanks, and a publisher, a writer, professors and students attended in numbers.
Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan paid tribute in a post on the X platform on 5 October, the day Vallalar was born, praying that Arutperunjothi increase love, peace, compassion and prosperity everywhere in the world and protect all lives.
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay posted that the State would continue to travel in the path of Vallalar, who regarded all lives as one and shone as the embodiment of love and compassion, and called his doctrines the great values of humanism.
DMK leader M. K. Stalin recalled the commemorations of his government: the All World Vallalar Conference, at which eight new announcements were made, the Vallalar triple festival, the restoration of the house at Marudur where Vallalar lived, and the addition of Vallalar's name to the Tiruvottiyur highway.
