The speech announces Vetri 150 as the instrument for fulfilling the Government's policy of providing 150 days of employment under the guaranteed rural employment scheme. The Government will bear an expenditure of Rs.100 crore per annum to provide an additional 25 days of employment to vulnerable and needy households who complete 125 days of employment, thereby ensuring 150 days of work for these households.
The Budget places the scheme against a changed funding backdrop. The new sharing pattern under the recently launched Viksit Bharat - Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) scheme has placed a heavy strain on State finances, requiring an unprecedented 40 per cent State contribution. The Government has urged the Government of India to reconsider this funding pattern; however, since the rural poor rely heavily on the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme for their livelihoods, the State is implementing the scheme with a total financial allocation of Rs.12,642 crore, including an unprecedented State contribution of Rs.5,057 crore. Vetri 150 sits on top of this, taking eligible households from 125 to 150 days.
The Government Order sets out the same background. VB-G RAM G, which replaced the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005, has been in force in Tamil Nadu from 1 July 2026. It gives every registered rural household willing to do unskilled manual work a statutory guarantee of 125 days of wage employment in a financial year, funded by the Union and the State in a 60:40 ratio.
