Eighth Schedule Status

  • Total languages: 22
  • Key amendments:
  • 1967: Sindhi (21st Amendment)
  • 1992: Konkani, Manipuri, Nepali (71st Amendment)
  • 2004: Bodo, Dogri, Maithili, Santhali (92nd Amendment)
  • Special note: Pali and Prakrit are classical but not in Eighth Schedule

Classical Language Criteria

  • Historical depth: 1,500-2,000 years of recorded history
  • Literary tradition: Rich ancient literature
  • Originality requirement: Independent literary tradition
  • Evolutionary distinction: Clear difference between classical and modern forms
