India’s Rise in the Global Innovation Index 2024

  • Global Innovation Index (GII) 2024 Ranking:
  • India has risen to 39th position in the Global Innovation Index among 133 economies in 2024.
  • In 2015, India was ranked at 81st, showcasing a steady climb over the years.
  • Regional and Economic Leadership:
  • India ranks 1st among 38 lower-middle-income economies.
  • India also leads in Central and Southern Asia, ranking 1st in this region.
  • Key Rankings and Achievements:
  • 33rd in Innovation Outputs (improved from last year).
  • 4th in the World Intellectual Property Organization’s (WIPO) Science & Technology (S&T) Cluster Ranking.
  • Major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Chennai are listed among the Top 100 S&T clusters globally.

  • Global Innovation Context:

Government Initiatives Fueling Innovation

  • Startup India:
  • Launched in 2016 to nurture entrepreneurship and build a strong startup ecosystem.
  • As of September 2024, 1,49,414 entities have been recognized as startups by DPIIT (Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade).
  • Digital India:
  • Aims to transform India into a digitally empowered society with a focus on digital infrastructure, governance, and citizen empowerment.
  • Atal Innovation Mission (AIM):
  • Established in 2016 to promote entrepreneurship and innovation.
  • AIM has set up 10,000 Atal Tinkering Labs in schools, incubated over 3500 startups, and created more than 32,000 jobs.

  • GENESIS:

  • Next Generation Incubation Scheme (NGIS):
  • Focuses on 12 Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities to promote widespread innovation across the country.
  • Centers of Excellence (CoE):
  • Supports 58 startups through infrastructure, mentorship, resources, and funding.
