Independence Day at Fort St George and the Welfare Scheme Bundle
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay hoisted the national flag at Fort St George, Chennai, on 15 August 2026, his first Independence Day flag-hoisting since taking charge as Chief Minister, on the occasion of India's 80th Independence Day.
He reviewed the parade from his motorcade and saluted the dignitaries seated on the dais; his parents S.A. Chandrasekhar and Shoba greeted him with visible emotion.
At the same event, the Chief Minister announced a bundle of enhancements to pension and welfare schemes for freedom fighters, the families of freedom-struggle martyrs and war veterans, with government orders already issued for each measure.
The monthly pension for freedom fighters was raised to Rs 23,000, and the monthly family pension for the families of freedom-struggle martyrs was raised to Rs 12,500.
Marriage assistance for the daughters of war veterans was doubled, from Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000.
Monthly financial assistance for differently-abled ex-servicemen was raised from Rs 5,000 to Rs 7,000.
Special Pension for the Descendants of Four Freedom-Movement Leaders
The Chief Minister announced a special monthly pension of Rs 11,500 for the descendants of four Tamil Nadu freedom-movement figures: Veerapandiya Kattabomman, Muthuramalinga Vijaya Raghunatha Sethupathi, the Maruthu Pandiyar brothers, and V.O. Chidambaranar.
Veerapandiya Kattabomman, the Palayakkarar chieftain of Panchalankurichi near Ettayapuram, was executed by the British in 1799, one of the earliest instances of armed Tamil resistance to British rule.
Muthuramalinga Vijaya Raghunatha Sethupathi, Raja of Ramanathapuram, is remembered for the early resistance the Sethupathi kingdom offered against British authority.
The Maruthu Pandiyar brothers, Periya Marudhu and Chinna Marudhu of Sivaganga, led the Sivaganga rebellion of 1801, among the earliest anti-British uprisings in India, well before the revolt of 1857.
V.O. Chidambaranar, popularly known as Kappalottiya Tamizhan, founded the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company and was a leading figure of the freedom movement from Thoothukudi.
The Thagaisaal Thamizhar Award and M. Krishnasamy
The Thagaisaal Thamizhar state award was instituted by the DMK government in 2021, to honour individuals who have served Tamil Nadu and the Tamil people.
At the Independence Day event in Fort St George, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay presented this year's Thagaisaal Thamizhar award to M. Krishnasamy, a veteran leader of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC).
The award consisted of a certificate and a cheque for Rs 10 lakh.
Krishnasamy's daughter, Soumya Anbumani, the PMK's legislature-party leader, was present at the event; she stood and applauded with visible joy as her father received the award.
Thagaisaal Thamizhar Awardees: The Full Sequence (2021-2026)
The Thagaisaal Thamizhar award has been conferred every Independence Day since it began in 2021, going to one senior Tamil Nadu political leader each year, drawn from different parties.
2021: N. Sankaraiah, senior CPM leader.
2022: Nallakannu, senior CPI leader.
2023: Ki. Veeramani, Dravidar Kazhagam leader.
2024: Kumari Ananthan, senior Congress leader.
2025: Kader Mohideen, Indian Union Muslim League leader.
2026: M. Krishnasamy, senior Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) leader.
கோட்டை கொத்தளத்தில் சுதந்திர தின விழா மற்றும் நலத்திட்ட அறிவிப்புகள்
முதலமைச்சர் சி. ஜோசப் விஜய், ஆகஸ்ட் 15, 2026 அன்று சென்னை கோட்டை கொத்தளத்தில் தேசியக் கொடியேற்றி மரியாதை செலுத்தினார். முதலமைச்சராகப் பொறுப்பேற்ற பின் இது அவருடைய முதல் சுதந்திர தின கொடியேற்று விழா ஆகும். இந்தியாவின் 80வது சுதந்திர தினத்தையொட்டி இவ்விழா நடைபெற்றது.
அணிவகுப்பை ஊர்தியில் வலம் வந்து பார்வையிட்ட முதல்வர், மேடையில் அமர்ந்திருந்த சிறப்பு விருந்தினர்களுக்கு வணக்கம் செலுத்தினார். அவரது பெற்றோர் எஸ்.ஏ.சந்திரசேகர் மற்றும் ஷோபா ஆகியோர் நெகிழ்ச்சியுடன் அவருக்கு வணக்கம் தெரிவித்தனர்.
இதே விழாவில், சுதந்திரப் போராட்ட வீரர்கள், விடுதலைப் போராட்ட தியாகிகளின் குடும்பங்கள், முன்னாள் படைவீரர்கள் ஆகியோருக்கான ஓய்வூதிய, நலத்திட்ட உதவிகளை உயர்த்தி வழங்கும் அறிவிப்புகளை முதல்வர் வெளியிட்டார். இவை அனைத்திற்குமான அரசாணைகள் ஏற்கெனவே வெளியிடப்பட்டுள்ளன.
விடுதலைப் போராட்ட வீரர்களுக்கான மாதாந்திர ஓய்வூதியம் ரூ.23,000 ஆக உயர்த்தப்பட்டது. விடுதலைப் போராட்ட தியாகிகளின் குடும்பங்களுக்கான மாதாந்திர குடும்ப ஓய்வூதியம் ரூ.12,500 ஆக உயர்த்தப்பட்டது.
முன்னாள் படைவீரர்களின் மகள்களுக்கான திருமண நிதியுதவி, ரூ.25,000-இல் இருந்து இரட்டிப்பாக்கப்பட்டு ரூ.50,000 ஆக உயர்த்தப்பட்டது.
மாற்றுத்திறன் கொண்ட முன்னாள் படைவீரர்களுக்கான மாதாந்திர நிதியுதவி ரூ.5,000-இல் இருந்து ரூ.7,000 ஆக உயர்த்தப்பட்டது.
நான்கு சுதந்திரப் போராட்ட பெருமக்களின் வழித்தோன்றல்களுக்கு சிறப்பு ஓய்வூதியம்
முதலமைச்சர், தமிழ்நாட்டின் நான்கு சுதந்திரப் போராட்ட பெருமக்களான வீரபாண்டிய கட்டபொம்மன், முத்துராமலிங்க விஜய ரகுநாத சேதுபதி, மருது சகோதரர்கள், வ.உ.சிதம்பரனார் ஆகியோரின் வழித்தோன்றல்களுக்கு மாதாந்திர சிறப்பு ஓய்வூதியமாக ரூ.11,500 வழங்கப்படும் என அறிவித்தார்.
வீரபாண்டிய கட்டபொம்மன், எட்டையாபுரத்திற்கு அருகிலுள்ள பாஞ்சாலங்குறிச்சியின் பாளையக்காரத் தலைவராக இருந்தார். இவர் 1799 ஆம் ஆண்டு ஆங்கிலேயரால் தூக்கிலிடப்பட்டார். இது ஆங்கிலேய ஆட்சிக்கு எதிரான ஆரம்பகால ஆயுதமேந்திய தமிழ் எதிர்ப்புகளில் ஒன்றாகும்.
முத்துராமலிங்க விஜய ரகுநாத சேதுபதி, இராமநாதபுரத்தின் அரசராக இருந்தார். சேதுபதி சமஸ்தானம் ஆங்கிலேய ஆட்சிக்கு எதிராக நிகழ்த்திய ஆரம்பகால எதிர்ப்பிற்காக நினைவுகூரப்படுகிறார்.
மருது சகோதரர்களானபெரிய மருது மற்றும் சின்ன மருது, சிவகங்கை பகுதியில் 1801 ஆம் ஆண்டு சிவகங்கை கிளர்ச்சியை வழிநடத்தினர். இது 1857 கிளர்ச்சிக்கு முன்பே நிகழ்ந்த, இந்தியாவின் ஆரம்பகால ஆங்கிலேய எதிர்ப்புப் புரட்சிகளில் ஒன்றாகும்.
வ.உ.சிதம்பரனார், கப்பலோட்டிய தமிழன் என அழைக்கப்பட்டவர். இவர் சுதேசி நீராவிக் கப்பல் நிறுவனத்தைத் தொடங்கியவரும், தூத்துக்குடியைச் சேர்ந்த சுதந்திரப் போராட்டத்தின் முக்கியத் தலைவருமாவார்.
தகைசால் தமிழர் விருதும் எம்.கிருஷ்ணசாமியும்
தகைசால் தமிழர் மாநில விருது, தமிழ்நாடு மற்றும் தமிழினத்தின் வளர்ச்சிக்குப் பணியாற்றியவர்களைக் கௌரவிக்கும் நோக்கில், 2021 ஆம் ஆண்டு திமுக அரசால் அறிமுகப்படுத்தப்பட்டது.
சென்னை கோட்டை கொத்தளத்தில் நடைபெற்ற சுதந்திர தின விழாவில், முதலமைச்சர் சி. ஜோசப் விஜய், இந்த ஆண்டுக்கான தகைசால் தமிழர் விருதை தமிழ்நாடு காங்கிரஸ் கமிட்டியின் (TNCC) மூத்த தலைவரான எம்.கிருஷ்ணசாமிக்கு வழங்கினார்.
இவ்விருதுடன் பாராட்டுப் பத்திரமும், ரூ.10 லட்சம் மதிப்பிலான காசோலையும் வழங்கப்பட்டது.
கிருஷ்ணசாமியின் மகளும், பட்டாளி மக்கள் கட்சியின் (பாமக) சட்டப்பேரவைக் குழுத் தலைவருமான சௌமியா அன்புமணி, இந்நிகழ்வில் கலந்துகொண்டார். தந்தை விருது பெற்றபோது அவர் எழுந்து நின்று மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் கைதட்டினார்.

தகைசால் தமிழர் விருது 2021 ஆம் ஆண்டு தொடங்கப்பட்டதிலிருந்து, ஒவ்வோர் ஆண்டும் சுதந்திர தினத்தன்று, வெவ்வேறு கட்சிகளைச் சேர்ந்த ஒரு மூத்த தமிழக அரசியல் தலைவருக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டு வருகிறது.
