The Prime Minister urged the Opposition to support a Bill reserving seats for women in Parliament; the Opposition linked its implementation to completion of the ongoing Census and the subsequent delimitation exercise, under the conditions set by the 2023 Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.

SHANTI Act 2025: Draft Rules Open Nuclear Power Generation to Private Companies

Medical College Governance: Private Fee Disclosure Before Counselling, and a PIL on Vacant Posts in Government Medical Colleges

Tamil Nadu's Selection Committee released private medical and dental college fee structures during MBBS and BDS counselling, complying with a Supreme Court directive mandating pre-counselling fee disclosure by private and deemed universities.
On a Public Interest Litigation, the Madras High Court Madurai Bench directed the Director of Medical Education and Research and 13 district collectors and medical-college deans to respond on vacant doctor, nurse and technician posts across 13 government medical college hospitals, and on non-functional X-ray and ventilator equipment.

The Tamil Nadu government issued a Government Order on 8 August 2026 creating the Tamil Nadu Anti Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), replacing 15 Narcotic Intelligence Bureau-CID (NIB-CID) units functioning under the Enforcement Bureau-CID; the force is headed by DGP Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal.

The ANTF has 10 specialised wings, including a cyber lab for digital forensics, darknet monitoring and crypto and blockchain analysis, and a centralised crime records bureau; the public can reach it through a toll-free number 10581 and a WhatsApp chatbot at 9498410581.
Cases are reviewed weekly at the district level by the Collector and Superintendent or Commissioner of Police, fortnightly at the State level by the Additional Director General of Police heading the ANTF and monthly at the apex level by the Chief Secretary; since 10 May 2026, the force has registered 5,082 drug cases and arrested 7,214 suspects, seizing over 7,000 kg of ganja, 112 kg of other drugs and 3.4 lakh unauthorised tablets.

CM Vijay's First Independence Day Address at Fort St George: Amma Unavagam, Breakfast Scheme and TASMAC Closures

Chief Minister Vijay, addressing Independence Day celebrations at Fort St George, announced the continuation and upgrade of the Amma Unavagam scheme and said the breakfast scheme for government school students would be extended from Class 6 to Class 8 starting 17 September.
He announced the closure of 717 TASMAC shops in the "first phase" of a drive; this is a measure to curb alcoholism.
He also announced faceless, computerised land registration, online display of temple lands, issue of revenue certificates within 15 days and a new WhatsApp number to report bribery.
He said Tamil Nadu would become a "$1.5 trillion economy by 2036", a claim AIADMK's Edappadi K. Palaniswami met with sarcasm, questioning whether the government would even last that long.

CAG Audit Finds Green India Mission Fell Far Short of Its NAPCC Targets

A CAG audit found that the Green India Mission (GIM), launched in 2014 by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change as one of eight missions under India's National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC), has fallen far short of its targets.
Against a target to improve forest-cover quality over 1.4 million hectares, only 0.11384 million hectares was achieved, a 91.87% shortfall; against a target to increase forest cover by 1.4 million hectares, only 0.03409 million hectares was achieved, a 97.57% shortfall.
Under its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the Paris Agreement, India has committed to an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of CO2-equivalent by 2030; the CAG found that only Rs 1,149.14 crore (47.88%) of proposed funding was received as budgetary support over 10 years, and 8 States and Union Territories did not maintain annual accounts for the mission.

Chennai and Kamarajar Ports Post Record Revenue in FY2025-26

Chennai Port earned Rs 1,185 crore revenue in FY2025-26, its highest in 22 years, with about 58 million tonnes of cargo and about 20 lakh TEUs (around 7% growth), yielding a pre-tax profit of about Rs 531 crore.
Chennai Port is also developing an outer harbour project worth Rs 17,500 crore, designed for ships with a capacity of 24,000 TEUs, now in preliminary works under Sagarmala, PM Gati Shakti, Maritime Vision 2030 and Viksit Bharat 2047.
Kamarajar Port (Ennore), the nation's 12th major port and first corporatised port, completed 25 years and posted record Rs 1,250 crore revenue in FY2025-26 and Rs 924 crore pre-tax profit, handling 1,008 ships, about 49 million tonnes of cargo, about 7 lakh TEUs and about 1.91 lakh vehicle exports; it aims to raise total handling capacity to 87 million tonnes.

FAST-DS: A Fresh Window to Disclose Foreign Assets, Effective 16 August

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) launched the Foreign Assets Small Taxpayers' Disclosure Scheme (FAST-DS) from 16 August 2026, as announced in this year's Union Budget, allowing online declarations till 31 December.
Undisclosed foreign assets or income up to Rs 1 crore in aggregate attract an effective 60% tax (30% base plus an equal additional amount); assets above the Rs 5 crore threshold that were previously taxed or acquired as a non-resident carry a flat Rs 1 lakh fee, with fair market value assessed as of 31 March 2026.
The scheme targets NRIs, students and professionals living abroad who missed earlier disclosure opportunities.

Centre Cuts Export Levies on Petrol, Diesel and Jet Fuel for Two Weeks

The Centre cut the export duty on petrol to nil, reduced the diesel export levy to Rs 24 a litre from Rs 25.50 and the ATF export levy to Rs 19.50 a litre from Rs 22, effective 15 August for two weeks, amid West Asia-linked disincentives to protect domestic fuel availability.
There is no change to fuel pricing for domestic consumption.

UPI's Transaction-Value Growth Slows Sharply as Cash With the Public Rises

UPI transaction-value growth has slowed sharply, from 133% in 2019-20 and 105% in 2021-22 to just 20.3% in 2025-26 and 18.7% in 2026-27 so far, even as cash with the public has been growing faster, up 6.5% in 2024-25 and 12% in 2025-26 to reach Rs 41.8 lakh crore as of 31 July 2026.
The slowdown comes as the government enables a Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on UPI through the Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026 passed in the Monsoon Session; retail inflation stood at 4.45% in July 2026.

TASMAC's Ban on 11 Liquor Variants Reversed a Day After an FSSAI Inspection

Following an FSSAI inspection that flagged 11 liquor variants made by Enrica Enterprises for artificial and nature-identical flavouring substances, TASMAC issued a sales-stop notice covering brands such as "Veeran Special" brandy, McDowell's VSOP and Honeybee Pine brandy.
The notice was revoked the next day after the company appealed and committed to compliance, with a 30-day improvement notice issued instead.

Forex Reserves at $707 Billion, Still Below the February All-Time High

India's foreign exchange reserves rose $14,136 million to $707.002 billion in the week ended 7 August 2026, still below the all-time high of $728.494 billion recorded in the week ended 27 February 2026, before West Asia conflict volatility; within this, gold reserves stood at $108.738 billion, Special Drawing Rights at $18.745 billion and the IMF reserve position at $4.894 billion.

Net Direct Tax Collection Crosses Rs 8.11 Lakh Crore, Up 23% Year-on-Year

Net direct tax collection for FY2026-27 crossed Rs 8.11 lakh crore as of 10 August, up 23% year-on-year, with net corporate tax up 20% to Rs 2.70 lakh crore and net non-corporate tax up about 23% to Rs 5.07 lakh crore; Securities Transaction Tax collection rose 51% to Rs 33,824 crore.
Gross direct tax collection rose 19.75% to Rs 9.55 lakh crore against a full-year Budget target of Rs 26.97 lakh crore.

Current Account Deficit Returns as Trade Gap Widens in Q1 FY2026-27

India's current account deficit (CAD) was $6.2 billion in Q1 FY2026-27 (April-June 2026), against a $1.2 billion surplus a year earlier, as imports rose to $71.4 billion outpacing export growth to $41.2 billion, widening the trade deficit to $30.2 billion in June from $19.2 billion; the cumulative balance-of-payments deficit for April-June was $8.1 billion.
Services exports grew to $36.4 billion from $32.1 billion, partly offsetting the deficit; remittances rose to $11.9 billion from $10.9 billion, while net FDI was $1.3 billion and FPI inflows were $2.5 billion.

A special monthly pension of Rs 11,500 was announced for the descendants of Veerapandiya Kattabomman, Muthuramalinga Vijaya Raghunatha Sethupathi of Ramanathapuram, the Maruthu Pandiyar brothers of Sivaganga, and V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC); Government Orders have already been issued.

"Thaimaman Thanga Mothiram" Scheme Announced

Tamil Nadu announced a new Rs 755.83 crore scheme named "Thaimaman Thanga Mothiram" (maternal uncle's gold ring), after the traditional custom of a maternal uncle gifting a gold ring; it is to launch on 15 September, the birth anniversary of C.N. Annadurai.
The government also announced 300 new public-transport buses worth Rs 127.21 crore.

Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay conferred the Thagaisaal Thamizhar Award (instituted by the DMK government in 2021) on veteran Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) leader M. Krishnasamy, carrying a certificate and Rs 10 lakh.
Past awardees, in sequence, are N. Sankaraiah (2021, CPM), Nallakannu (2022, CPI), Ki. Veeramani (2023, Dravidar Kazhagam), Kumari Ananthan (2024, Congress), and Kader Mohideen (2025, IUML).
