Friedreich's Ataxia (FRDA): A Genetic Disease Found Only in Eurasian Populations

A new study by the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, published online on 9 June 2026 in Human Molecular Genetics, found that Friedreich's Ataxia (FRDA) is a Eurasian-only genetic disease, never reported in sub-Saharan African, Native American, Chinese, Japanese, or Southeast Asian populations, and occurring only among people of European, North African, West Asian, and South Asian descent.
FRDA is caused by mutation in the FXN gene, which codes for frataxin, a protein essential for mitochondrial ATP production. A long-normal FXN allele (100 to 1,500 GAA repeats) causes disease when it mutates to a 'full expansion' repeat, disrupting frataxin transcription, whereas short-normal alleles (5 to 33 GAA repeats) do not cause disease.
Ancient-DNA analysis of human remains from the Neanderthal/Denisovan era, roughly 9,500 years old, found in Europe and Western Asia, showed the long-normal FXN variant and disease-linked 'pre-mutations' were already present in modern humans of that era, but were absent in Neanderthals and Denisovans themselves.
FRDA typically has an onset between age 5 and 15, presenting as gait unsteadiness, loss of coordination, slurred speech, and vision or hearing decline, eventually leading to heart disease; in India, the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad diagnoses about one FRDA case a month, almost all linked to consanguineous marriages.

Odisha Floods: Five Districts Worst-Hit, Rivers in Spate, School Evacuated

Heavy rain from a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal triggered floods in Odisha, with Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Mayurbhanj and Kendrapara districts among the worst-hit.

Other measures in the report include 200 units of free electricity for domestic consumers using up to 500 units every two months; expansion of the Ponmalar Kalanjiyam breakfast scheme to 19.14 lakh additional students in Classes 6-8 across 15,414 schools with Rs 710 crore allocated; a Rs 6,000 crore crop loan waiver; the Vetri Laptop Scheme for college students with Rs 2,000 crore allocated; and the closure of 717 liquor shops near educational institutions, temples and bus stands.

Government Fixes LPG Production Targets for Refiners for the First Time, Citing Hormuz Strait Risk

The Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry has, for the first time, fixed LPG production targets for public and private refineries and oil-gas producers, prompted by the risk of disruption in the Hormuz Strait; the mandated national output totals 63,810 tonnes a day across 21 refineries and producers.
Among the targets: Reliance Industries (Jamnagar) 18,000 tonnes a day, Nayara Energy (Vadinar) 4,480 tonnes a day, the ONGC-GAIL group 6,460 tonnes a day, and 18 PSU-owned refineries collectively 31,470 tonnes a day; the target activates only during a supply disruption and is revised twice yearly, on 1 January and 1 July.

PM Gati Shakti: Rs 18.66 Lakh Crore Worth of Projects Recommended for Approval Since 2021 Launch

Since the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan was launched on 13 October 2021, the Network Planning Group (NPG) has recommended 396 infrastructure projects worth Rs 18.66 lakh crore for approval; of these, 256 projects have been allocated to ministries and 198 are under implementation; the NPG evaluates projects with an investment above Rs 500 crore.

CAG Report Finds E.coli Contamination in Railway Station Drinking-Water Coolers

A CAG report found E.coli bacteria in drinking-water coolers at several stations, including Southern Railway stations at Coimbatore and Palakkad, South Central Railway's Hyderabad, Central Railway's Chhatrapati Shivaji and Eastern Railway's Madhupur.

Cauvery Water Dispute: Historical Background and the Mekedatu Hearing

The Cauvery water dispute dates back to an 1892 Agreement between Madras Presidency and Mysore State; under the 1924 Agreement (18 February), Madras was allowed to build the Mettur Dam with 95.50 TMC capacity, irrigating 3.01 lakh acres, while Mysore was allowed dams of 45 TMC capacity on the Kabini, Hemavathi, and Harangi rivers, irrigating 1.10 lakh acres.
The Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal's interim order (21 June 1991) directed Karnataka to release 205 TMC of water a year to Tamil Nadu, capping Karnataka's irrigated area at 11.2 lakh acres; Karnataka's July 1991 ordinance (the 'Cauvery Irrigation Protection Act') was struck down as unconstitutional by the Supreme Court on 22 November 1991.
Then Chief Minister Jayalalithaa held a four-day hunger strike over non-implementation of the order; Union Minister Vazhapadi K. Ramamurthy resigned in protest, and Tribunal chairman Chittatosh Mukherjee resigned mid-proceedings after a conflict-of-interest lawsuit filed by Deve Gowda.
In the ongoing Mekedatu dispute, Karnataka has been releasing water from the Kabini reservoir; the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear Tamil Nadu's plea on the matter on 17 August 2026.
