Syllabus: Prelims Unit I - General Science (10 Questions)

Rotating Detonation Engine (RDE): India's First Demonstration at a DRDO Facility

  • India-based defence start-up D-Propulse demonstrated a Rotating Detonation Engine (RDE) at a DRDO facility in Hyderabad. In combustion physics, a flame front that travels slower than sound is called deflagration, while a front that travels faster than sound accompanied by a shock wave is called detonation.
  • Conventional engines burn fuel at constant pressure, whereas detonation engines burn at constant volume, converting a larger share of the fuel's chemical energy into pressure instead of shedding it as heat. This gives RDEs roughly 10% to 25% more thermodynamic efficiency; a 20% gain implies about 17% less fuel for the same output.
  • A Pulsed Detonation Engine (PDE) uses a long tube in which the detonation runs down the tube and out, with the tube purged between cycles. An RDE instead uses an annular combustion chamber formed by two concentric cylinders with a ring-shaped gap, inside which detonation waves circulate continuously, thousands of times per second.
  • Engine materials must survive temperatures above 2,000 degrees Celsius, pressures of 10 to 100 atmospheres and detonation speeds above 1,500 metres per second. The concept was already understood by the 1960s, but its construction had to wait for advances in computing, diagnostics, fuel injection and materials. A NASA full-scale RDE test in 2023 fired for 251 seconds, and Astrobotic test-fired its Chakram RDE for 300 seconds in 2026; no RDE is yet ready for commercial or military use.

E20 Ethanol-Blended Petrol: Notification, Fuel Chemistry and Vehicle Compatibility

  • The Government notified on 17 February 2026 that from 1 April 2026 all States and Union Territories must sell petrol blended with up to 20% ethanol (E20) at a minimum Research Octane Number (RON) of 95, replacing the 2021 notification that permitted blending only up to 10%.
  • BS 6 Phase 2 Real Driving Emissions norms applied from April 2023; compliant vehicles use ethanol-resistant fluorinated rubber (FKM/Viton) and recalibrated Powertrain Control Modules, whereas vehicles built before April 2023 used Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR) calibrated for E5 and E10 blends.
  • India's petrol fleet numbers about 310 million vehicles, of which roughly 70 million (23%) are BS 6 Phase 2 compliant and about 240 million (77%) are legacy vehicles calibrated for lower blends.
  • Ethanol is a polar solvent and detergent that dislodges rust and varnish from old tanks and pipes into the fuel stream, and it is hygroscopic, absorbing moisture until phase separation occurs: an acidic water-alcohol layer settles at the bottom and pits steel tanks. Catastrophic phase separation occurs beyond about 0.5% water content.
  • Ethanol carries roughly 30% to 35% less energy per unit volume than petrol, though the Engine Research Laboratory of IIT Kanpur asserts that the resulting efficiency drop is under 5%. Reported parts-per-million contamination readings for E20 fuel come from leaked industry samples reviewed by Reuters and are not official government data.

Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo: Bundibugyo Strain

  • The Democratic Republic of the Congo is battling its deadliest Ebola outbreak on record, caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, for which no specific vaccine or treatment exists.
  • The outbreak has recorded 4,945 cases including 2,325 deaths in three months and is the country's 17th Ebola outbreak, surpassing the 2018 to 2020 outbreak, which had recorded 3,481 cases and 2,299 deaths.

Newborn Screening and Child Health Science Initiatives in Tamil Nadu

  • Nearly 4.5 lakh babies born in government hospitals are to be screened for seven rare genetic diseases under a hub-and-spoke model, the conditions including congenital hypothyroidism, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, galactosemia and biotinidase deficiency.
  • A Neo Genesis Unit for extreme low-birth-weight babies, at a cost of ₹16.81 crore, will provide womb-like intrauterine environments at the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Chennai and at the Government Medical College Hospitals in Madurai, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Chengalpattu and Tiruchi.
  • The 'Irumbu Kanmani' school anaemia programme, at ₹6.37 crore, provides haemoglobin estimation for nearly 16.5 lakh adolescents in classes VI, IX and XI, while Bluetooth-enabled blood pressure monitors for pregnant women will cover about 10,000 women in 14 districts in the first phase.
  • Free year-round insulin for those under 18 with type 1 diabetes is provided at ₹9.94 crore, and early-detection training for autism is to be given to 12,456 village health nurses and 5,000 doctors.

MQ-9B Sea Guardian: Two Remotely Piloted Aircraft Leased for the Indian Navy

  • India signed a ₹1,943 crore contract with the US firm General Atomics to lease two MQ-9B Sea Guardian High-Altitude Long-Endurance remotely piloted aircraft for the Indian Navy for 30 months, to strengthen maritime domain awareness and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance across the Indian Ocean Region.

Air-Gapped Systems: Physical Isolation as a Cyber-Security Measure

  • An air-gapped system is a computer or network kept physically and wirelessly isolated from unsecured networks, with no Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or wired connections, which makes remote cyberattacks nearly impossible. Such systems are used in nuclear power plants, electric grids, military networks and financial systems, and the National Testing Agency is adopting them at the question-paper-setting stage.

Catheter-Based Mechanical Thrombectomy Performed Without Open Surgery

  • At Prashanth Hospitals, Kolathur, a 67-year-old woman with multiple clots obstructing blood flow to both lungs was treated by catheter-based mechanical thrombectomy, in which the clots were removed without open surgery after clot-busting medication had failed.

AI-Generated Wildlife Images: A Growing Threat to Conservation Science

  • A viral image of an orangutan cradling leopard cubs has been found to be AI-generated. Jose Guerrero-Casado, professor of zoology at Spain's University of Cordoba, warns that such images lead people to approach wild animals unsafely.
  • A September study in the journal Conservation Biology called AI misinformation a 'major threat' to conservation, and a commentary in Nature warned that it could corrupt citizen-science datasets; Meta and TikTok now require the labelling of realistic AI-generated visuals.

Butterfly Park Reopens at Arignar Anna Zoological Park, Vandalur

  • The Butterfly Park at the Arignar Anna Zoological Park, Vandalur has reopened after renovation. Spread over 2.7 hectares near Otteri Lake, it has dedicated host and nectar gardens, larval and pupal rearing rooms, an indoor conservatory and an interpretation centre on the butterfly life cycle; butterflies will be released into the wild every Saturday at 11.30 a.m..

Mandatory Drug Testing of Pilots After a Mid-Air Loss of Altitude

  • First-phase mandatory drug testing of about 400 pilots of Air India found two positive. The trigger was the 4 August Phuket to Delhi flight that lost control and dropped 300 feet in 4 seconds, injuring about 25 passengers; one pilot on that flight tested positive for marijuana. Mandatory testing was ordered on 13 August, and the airline group employs about 5,000 pilots.

Cauvery Water Sharing: Supreme Court Decides to Wait and Watch, Case Posted to 24 August

  • A Bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta of the Supreme Court decided to wait and watch on Tamil Nadu's Cauvery plea on 17 August, observing that it is not that the State is not giving water to Tamil Nadu, and posted the case to 24 August, directing Karnataka to continue releases as per Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) orders.
  • The CWMA had directed Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs a day from 12 August for 15 days; Karnataka's affidavit stated that over 12,000 cusecs had been released by 8 a.m. on 17 August, and that 1,64,080 cusecs were released between 29 July and 10 August.
  • Releases from the KRS and Kabini reservoirs are measured at the inter-State border at Biligundlu; Karnataka cited a distress year and large inflows into the Kabini from good rainfall in the Wayanad catchment.
  • Tamil Nadu, represented by senior advocate C.S. Vaidyanathan, sought the balance 21.357 tmc ft due as on 12 August and the release of 37 tmc ft from 12 to 31 August, submitting that Karnataka's reservoirs held 76% storage with only 14.814 tmc released up to 16 August; Karnataka was represented by Shyam Divan and Mohan V. Katarki.

Ken-Betwa River-Linking Project: 231-km Canal for Bundelkhand, Displacement Inside Panna Tiger Reserve

  • The Union Cabinet approved the Ken-Betwa river-linking project in 2021 to transfer surplus water from the Ken to the Betwa through a 231-km canal for the water-stressed districts of Bundelkhand, a region spanning 13 districts across Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
  • The Ken rises in the Vindhyan plateau, flows mainly through Madhya Pradesh and joins the Yamuna at Banda in Uttar Pradesh; the Betwa also rises in the Vindhyas, flows primarily through Uttar Pradesh and meets the Yamuna at Hamirpur.
  • The Daudhan dam across the Ken is the main component; it will submerge 10 villages, and because the project falls inside the Panna Tiger Reserve, people of another 12 villages are to be displaced to offset the forest loss, making it 22 villages in all, across Panna and Chhatarpur districts.
  • A 2017 forest advisory committee record cites a Detailed Project Report estimate of 23 lakh trees to be felled for the project.
  • Under the compensation terms, those aged 18 or above in February 2024 are eligible for Rs 12.5 lakh along with Rs 5 lakh per acre of land acquired, though most Adivasi families do not hold patta land; the forest produce that sustains these communities includes mahua, charwa, tendu leaves and guli-golanda.
  • The Chita Andolan, a protest led by Adivasi women since 2022, has drawn in Medha Patkar of the Narmada Bachao Andolan.

Megamalai, Theni District: Reserve Forest in 2009, Tiger Reserve in February 2021

  • Megamalai in Theni district was declared a Reserve Forest in 2009 and was declared the Srivilliputhur-Megamalai Tiger Reserve in February 2021.
  • A Central team toured the State for eight months between July 2025 and February 2026, and the Supreme Court's eviction order was based on that committee's documents; Tamil Nadu is filing a review petition.
  • The longer chronology of the area records it as identified as reserve land in 1957, a 1978 proposal to declare it a reserve forest that drew 168 petitions, and local protests running about 15 years.

The Aravallis: India's Most Degraded Range, Green Wall Planting Planned

  • The Aravallis have been described as arguably India's most degraded range, with hillocks quarried away and native growth overrun by the invasive vilayati kikar (Prosopis juliflora).
  • The degradation is now to be addressed by a Green Wall of fresh planting along the range.

Tamil Nadu Disaster Management: Rs 50 Crore for Landslide Monitoring, New Chennai Flood Committee

  • Tamil Nadu has allotted Rs 50 crore for a landslide monitoring and risk-reduction scheme, and Rs 3.90 crore for a Detailed Project Report on flood mitigation covering the four high-flood-risk districts of Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Thoothukudi and Kanniyakumari.
  • The Thiruppugazh Committee, constituted in 2021 after the Chennai mega-flood, has still not had its report released, and a new 7-member committee has now been formed to study the Chennai flood problem.

Weather and Air Quality, 17 August: Prayagraj Wettest, Aizawl Records AQI of 14

  • Tamil Nadu maxima and minima on 17 August included Chennai 37.6/28.1°C, Tiruchirappalli 39.7/28.0°C, Madurai 39.0/26.5°C, Coimbatore 32.8/22.4°C and Puducherry 36.8/28.0°C with no rainfall at these stations, while the highest rainfall in the country was at Prayagraj 73.4 mm, followed by Raipur 58 mm and Mangaluru 18.6 mm.
  • Air quality readings showed Chennai PM10 at 190 and Delhi PM10 at 287 with PM2.5 at 175, while Aizawl in Mizoram recorded a healthy Air Quality Index of 14.

Vande Mataram and the Freedom Struggle: Vice-President Recalls the Slogan Carried Village to Village

  • Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan, speaking at the 11th Convocation of the Central University of Tamil Nadu at Neelakudi near Tiruvarur, described Vande Mataram as "the one word that made the nation a free country".
  • He recalled that in Tamil Nadu V.O. Chidambaram Pillai and Subramaniya Siva walked village to village carrying the single slogan 'Vande Mataram' to urge people to fight British rule.
  • Both leaders belonged to the Swadeshi movement phase of the national movement; V.O. Chidambaram Pillai launched the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company in 1906 at Tuticorin, and the arrest of the two men in 1908 set off the Tirunelveli uprising.

Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Act, 2026 Gives Vande Mataram Status Equal to Jana Gana Mana

  • The Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Act, 2026, recently passed by Parliament, grants Vande Mataram, the National Song, a status equal to that of the National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana.
  • Insulting the national song is now a punishable offence; the parent law, the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, already penalised insults to the National Flag, the Constitution of India and the National Anthem.
  • Vande Mataram was written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee and appeared in his novel Anandamath (1882); it was sung at the 1896 Calcutta session of the Indian National Congress by Rabindranath Tagore, and was accorded a status equal to the National Anthem on 24 January 1950.

Assam's Mother-Tongue Figures in the Census: An Eight-Decade Trend

  • Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma appealed to people of Assam who are natives of other States to record 'Assamese' as their mother tongue in the ongoing Census.
  • The share of people reporting Assamese as their mother tongue rose from 31.42% (1931) to 56.29% (1951) and 59.53% (1971), and then fell to 57.81% (1991), 48.80% (2001) and 48.38% (2011).
  • Bengali speakers rose from 19.7% (1971) to 28.91% (2011); the recent decline in the Assamese share is driven partly by tribal groups such as the Bodos, Karbis and Misings recording their own languages instead of Assamese.

India and Nepal Continue Their Reciprocal Honorary General Rank Tradition

  • Indian Army chief General Dhiraj Seth was conferred the honorary rank of General of the Nepalese Army by Nepal President Ramchandra Paudel at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Kathmandu.
  • Under this long-standing tradition, India and Nepal reciprocally confer the honorary rank of General on each other's Army Chiefs, a practice that marks the close historical and military ties between the two countries.

From the Archives, 18 August 1926: The Submarine Soundhouse Built on Piezoelectric Quartz

  • A hundred years ago, on 18 August 1926 at Calais, the submarine "soundhouse" was inaugurated; it used high-frequency sound waves passed through water to guide navigation in fog.
  • It was developed by Professor Langevin from the piezoelectric property of quartz, discovered by Jacques Curie in 1880; the same principle underlies modern sonar and echo sounding.

Rasikamani T.K.C.: 145th Birth Anniversary of the Reader Who Opened Up Classical Tamil Poetry

  • The 145th birth anniversary of T.K. Chidambaranatha Mudaliar, universally known as "Rasikamani", falls on 18 August.
  • From about the 1950s he made Kamba Ramayanam and Tamil poetry accessible to ordinary readers without a pandit's help, by pausing, splitting sandhi and repeating lines aloud so that the musicality, meaning and poetic beauty of a verse emerged in turn.
  • Kaviyogi Suddhananda Bharati conferred on him the title "Natha Mudaliar" for making verses ring like a bell; his approach placed literary appreciation (rasanai) at the centre of reading classical poetry and turned recitation into a public art.

Kerala Renamed Keralam: Presidential Assent to the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026 and the First Schedule Amendment under Article 3

  • President Droupadi Murmu gave assent to the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026, which is now law; the Lok Sabha passed it on 11 August 2026 and the Rajya Sabha passed it the next day, the Bill having been piloted in the Upper House by Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai.
  • The Kerala Assembly had passed a resolution in 2024 urging the Centre to legislate the change; the President then referred the Bill to the State legislature for its views in June 2024, after which the Assembly adopted a unanimous resolution. The change is given effect by amendments in the First Schedule of the Constitution, modifying Kerala to Keralam, in accordance with Article 3, the provision that empowers Parliament to alter the name of a State.

Supreme Court on Black Money in Elections: Justice Sanjay Karol's Judgment and the 24-Hour Seizure Reporting Rule

  • In a judgment authored by Justice Sanjay Karol, a Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant held that black money in the electoral process is one such aspect that compromises democracy, rule of law and the electoral process itself, and that ridding the electoral process of black money is a responsibility of the Election Commission of India.
  • Directions issued: the seizing authority must report within 24 hours to the District Magistrate or the competent court, with written reasons disclosing the prima facie nexus between the seizure and the suspected electoral offence; and the investigating officer must endeavour to complete the investigation within one year, recording and communicating the reasons to the Election Commission if that period is exceeded.
  • The Court also directed the Election Commission of India and the State governments to file a compliance affidavit by 18 November, with quarterly status reports to the electoral body. The judgment came on a plea by the Karnataka government relating to the 2014 Lok Sabha polls and seizures made in Bellary district.

Supreme Court on Elephant Corridors: Nationwide Survey Ordered and the 2018 Ban on Fireballs and Spikes Reiterated

  • The Supreme Court directed the Centre to conduct a nationwide survey to ensure the free passage of wild elephant herds through their ancient corridors across States. Chief Justice of India Surya Kant observed: No State can block their paths. Elephants travel across many States. One State cannot come in their way.
  • The Court directed examination of allegations that fireballs, mashaals and spikes are thrown at elephants, noting that in 2018 it had already prohibited these practices as barbaric and illegal. Elephants are Schedule I animals under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, which gives them the highest degree of legal protection.

Resignation of Six AIADMK MLAs: Speaker's Affidavit on Article 190(3)(b) and the Limited Inquiry

  • Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar told the Madras High Court in an affidavit that he conducted a limited inquiry before accepting the resignations of six AIADMK MLAs between 26 May and 29 June 2026, individually asking each of them whether the resignation was of free will; he said he was guided by the mandate stipulated under Article 190(3)(b) of the Constitution and Rule 22 of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Rules.
  • The six are Esakki Subaya (Ambasamudram), S. Jayakumar (Perundurai), Maragatham Kumaravel (Maduranthagam), P. Sathyabama (Dharapuram), C. Vijayabaskar (Viralimalai) and M.R. Vijayabhaskar (Karur). Four writ petitions were filed by AIADMK Whip Agri S.S. Krishnamurthy before a Bench of Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and Justice G. Arul Murugan; the Speaker, represented by senior counsel K.K. Venugopal, described himself as a co-constitutional authority, and the case was adjourned to 1 September 2026.

Transgender Identity Cards: Centre Assures Supreme Court that Pre-2026 Cards Remain Valid

  • The Union government assured the Supreme Court that transgender identity cards issued before the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Act, 2026 will remain valid, the Court having earlier said the 2026 law should not work retrospectively to invalidate them. The Amendment Act came into force on 30 March, and petitioners argue that it dismantles the right to self-identification; Solicitor-General Tushar Mehta appeared before a Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant.

MMDR Amendment Bill, 2026: Section 9D and the Federalism Concern over States' Taxing Powers on Mineral Rights

  • Keralam Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan wrote to the Prime Minister on the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, whose Section 9D, recently passed by Parliament, restricts States from imposing any tax, cess or levy on mineral rights and mineral-bearing lands except within parameters prescribed by the Centre; the amendments also bring mineral-bearing lands within Union regulation and invalidate certain past State levies, raising concerns about the federal distribution of powers.

SHANTI Act, 2025: Supreme Court Notice on the Nuclear Liability Caps

  • The Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Act, 2025 caps the liability of the largest nuclear plant operator at Rs 3,000 crore and caps the government's residual liability at 300 million Special Drawing Rights; the Supreme Court has issued notice to the Union government and the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) on a plea challenging these liability caps.

Supreme Court Halts Disproportionate Assets Proceedings against Rahul Gandhi

  • A three-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant ordered an immediate halt on proceedings initiated by the Allahabad High Court, observing that at least courts should follow the principles of natural justice; it directed that no report shall be submitted by the CBI, the ED or any other authority to the High Court, which must defer its next hearing scheduled for 20 August. The High Court proceedings were held in-chamber and not in open court, with records in sealed covers, and Rahul Gandhi was not heard.

Jharkhand Recruitment Examination Crisis: JSSC-CGL Cancelled and All Examinations Since 2014 by a Blacklisted Agency Scrapped

  • On the 24th day of protests, Chief Minister Hemant Soren announced, after a four-hour emergency Cabinet meeting, the cancellation of the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level (JSSC-CGL) examination; all examinations conducted since 2014 by TSR Data Processing Private Ltd, a blacklisted agency, along with their results and selections, were also cancelled.
  • The trigger was the 2 July result of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission's 14th Combined Civil Services preliminary examination, which shortlisted 2,204 candidates from about 3.5 lakh aspirants for 103 posts amid undisclosed category-wise cut-offs; a committee under senior IAS officer Amitabh Kaushal will suggest reforms and the CID will investigate all examinations from 2014 onward.

National Testing Agency Overhaul: UGC-NET Re-Examination and a New Confidential Operations Architecture

  • The National Testing Agency will re-conduct the UGC-NET for English, Commerce and Sociology on 9 and 10 September because of question-paper errors, while results for the other 84 subjects are delayed, affecting admissions, Junior Research Fellowships and PhD admissions.
  • Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi directed a thorough audit and a complete overhaul of the confidential operations architecture, including secluded rooms, air-gapped systems and device-deposit protocols at the paper-setting stage; the agency has removed more than 50 staff members and advertised 10 new professional leadership positions, bringing in specialists in cyber-security, psychometrics and question-paper design.

Criminalisation of Politics: 326 Sitting MPs Face Criminal Cases

  • A report submitted in the Supreme Court states that 251 of the 543 Lok Sabha members and 75 of the 233 Rajya Sabha members have criminal cases against them, a total of 326 sitting members of Parliament.

BJP National Organisational Reshuffle: New Office-Bearers Announced

  • The reshuffle was announced by BJP national general secretary (organisation) Arun Singh, with appointments made by national president Nitin Nabin: Smriti Irani returned as general secretary, Ram Madhav was appointed vice-president and Piyush Goyal treasurer.
  • B.L. Santhosh was retained as general secretary (organisation) and Deepak Mhaskey replaced Amit Malviya as national social media convener; of the 64 office-bearers, 42 are below 60, there are 12 women including six vice-presidents, and around 40% are from marginalised communities.

Bihar Police Affidavit in the Supreme Court on the NEET-UG Protest Firing

  • The Bihar Police told the Supreme Court that a constable trapped in the crowd fired four rounds from an AK-47 in the air and that no one was injured from the bullets of the AK-47; another officer fired a 9mm pistol and three protesters suffered minor firearm injuries. The police conceded that the AK-47 is a platoon-level weapon used in special operations and not for law-and-order situations, and said the Director General of Police issued detailed instructions on 1 August.

Afghanistan Embassy in New Delhi Holds First-Ever Victory Day Event

  • The Afghanistan embassy in New Delhi, under the Taliban administration, held a first-ever Victory Day event; Anand Prakash, Joint Secretary in charge of the Pakistan-Afghanistan-Iran (PAI) division of the Ministry of External Affairs, attended from the Indian side. India-Afghanistan trade remains around $1 billion, and the Taliban does not enjoy full diplomatic recognition by India.
