A nationwide analysis of NFHS-5 data on 209,266 births, across 707 districts between 2015 and 2020, used the India Heat Index to study heat exposure during pregnancy in India. The study found that prolonged extreme heat exposure is linked to low birthweight, preterm birth and stillbirth.
First-trimester heat exposure showed the strongest link to preterm birth, second-trimester exposure to low birth weight, and third-trimester exposure to stillbirth risk, showing that the timing of heat exposure within pregnancy shapes the type of harm.
The study was conducted by the University of Queensland and IIT Delhi, involving IIT Delhi's Centre for Atmospheric Sciences and School of Public Policy.
Other institutions involved include UNSW Sydney, the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom, and Korea University in Seoul, making this a multi-country research collaboration.

The science behind lab-grown diamonds: HPHT and CVD methods, and the shrinking lifespan of natural diamond mines

The HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) method of growing diamonds was developed by General Electric in 1954 under Project Superpressure, the first successful technique for producing synthetic diamonds.
The CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition) method followed in 1962, offering an alternative laboratory technique for growing diamonds.
Natural diamond mines worldwide, about 40 mines accounting for 90% of global production, including Argyle in Australia and Diavik in Canada, have less than 50 years of remaining lifespan.
This looming shortage in natural diamond supply is a key reason lab-grown diamond technology is gaining importance today.

Kerala floods: death toll rises to 18 as heavy rain continues for third day

Kerala's rain-related death toll climbed to 18 on the third consecutive day of heavy downpour, with the State government reporting 13,496 people sheltered in 363 relief camps across affected districts.
In several affected pockets, rainfall crossed 350 mm in a single spell, swelling rivers and triggering landslip warnings across the hill districts.
The State announced compensation of ₹8 lakh for the families of each person killed, along with an immediate cash assistance of ₹10,000 to affected households.

India's critical mineral reserves and the National Critical Mineral Mission

India holds sizeable reserves of critical minerals essential for clean energy and defence technologies: cobalt (44.9 million tonnes), copper (163.9 million tonnes), graphite (211.6 million tonnes) and nickel (189 million tonnes).
The country also has deposits of monazite, a rare earth oxide used in magnets, electronics and defence applications, found largely along its coastal sands.
To harness these reserves, the National Critical Mineral Mission aims to launch 1,200 domestic exploration projects by 2030-31.
The Mission also targets domestic production of at least 15 critical minerals and the acquisition of 50 overseas mining assets to reduce import dependence.

IMD forecasts rain across Tamil Nadu till August 9 as monsoon trough strengthens

The India Meteorological Department has forecast rain across Tamil Nadu until August 9, attributing the spell to a low-pressure and monsoon trough system active over the region.
Several districts, including parts of the western and interior regions of the State, are expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall during this period.

Lok Sabha passes Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026

The Lok Sabha passed the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026, amending Section 13(3) of the 1969 Act: registration delays of up to two years still need an order from a district, subdivisional or executive magistrate, but delays beyond two years now require an order from a judicial magistrate.
The original 2023 amendment to the Act had made birth certificates near-conclusive proof for school admission, voter rolls, passport, Aadhaar, driving licence and government jobs, and allowed the Centre and States to build shared digital databases of births and deaths.

Lok Sabha passes Bill raising Supreme Court's sanctioned strength to 38 judges

The Lok Sabha passed the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, raising the Supreme Court's sanctioned strength from 34 to 38 judges, including the Chief Justice of India, and replacing an earlier ordinance on the subject.
The Bill had already cleared the Rajya Sabha before this passage in the Lok Sabha.

Bankers' Books Evidence Bill and Indian Statistical Institute Bill introduced in Lok Sabha

The Bankers' Books Evidence Bill, 2026 was introduced in the Lok Sabha to replace the 1891 law, recognising electronic, digital, virtual and cloud-based banking records as admissible evidence in courts.
The Indian Statistical Institute Bill, 2026 was also introduced, repealing the 1959 Act and converting the Institute into a statutory body corporate, with the President as Visitor and a Board of Governors as its principal executive body.

Rajya Sabha passes MSME Development (Amendment) Bill mandating CPSEs to route payments through TReDS

The Rajya Sabha passed the MSME Development (Amendment) Bill, 2026, mandating all Central Public Sector Enterprises to route invoice settlements through the Trade Receivables Discounting System (TReDS) for MSME procurement.
MSMEs contribute 31% of India's GDP, 36% of manufacturing output and 41% of exports.

Government to sell up to 6.5% stake in LIC via Offer for Sale, floor price Rs 382

The government will sell up to a 6.5% stake in Life Insurance Corporation via an Offer for Sale at a floor price of Rs 382 per share, a 10% discount to the previous close of Rs 424.35.
The sale is expected to raise about Rs 31,000 crore; the government currently holds a 96.5% stake in LIC.
SEBI's deadline for LIC to meet the minimum 10% public shareholding norm is May 16, 2027.

Protests against PoK's three-phase Assembly election kill over 40 civilians
