Zoological Survey of India publishes first complete catalogue of India's butterflies and moths

Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) scientists Navneet Singh and Rahul Joshi published the "Catalogue of Lepidoptera (Butterflies & Moths) of India" in the peer-reviewed journal Zootaxa, after nearly 12 years of work.
India is home to 13,703 lepidoptera species, 8.25% of the world's total, spread across 3,705 genera, 240 subfamilies, 102 families and 31 superfamilies.
Of this total, 1,417 are butterflies and 12,286 are moths.
The catalogue also lists 2,205 species of Geometroidea, 8.8% of the world's known species in that superfamily.

Previously unknown metal alloy discovered inside glass beads formed by the Hiroshima atomic blast

Researchers found a previously unknown metal alloy, made of iron, chromium, nickel, manganese, molybdenum, silicon and aluminium, inside glass-like "hiroshimaite" beads formed by the 1945 Hiroshima atomic blast.
The blast's fireball exceeded 7,000°C, hot enough to melt surrounding materials into the glass-like beads that trapped the new alloy.
The findings were published in the journal Science Advances on July 29, 2026.
The discovery shows that nuclear and plasma events can act as natural laboratories capable of producing novel high-entropy-alloy-like materials.

Nearly 120 scientists resign from ISRO amid concerns over rigid administrative culture

Nearly 120 scientists reportedly resigned from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in recent times.
A similar pattern of resignations has been observed at Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) laboratories and other government research institutions.

Spain has seen about 1.9 lakh hectares burnt since June, the second-highest since 2022, while the EU's Joint Research Centre said Europe's previous single-year record was 75,566 hectares in 1989.
Over 2.2 lakh people have been relocated due to the wildfires, the highest single-instance disaster displacement recorded in Europe.

Supreme Court: consenting adult sex workers cannot be forcibly "rescued", invokes Article 142

In a ruling on May 29, 2026, the Supreme Court, invoking Article 142 of the Constitution, held that consenting adult sex workers cannot be forcibly "rescued" against their will.
The Court recognised that agency and vulnerability can coexist in sex work, and rejected the conflation of migration with trafficking.
It directed reform of shelter homes, police training and legal-aid access for sex workers.
Article 142 empowers the Supreme Court to pass any order necessary for doing complete justice in a case, and was invoked here to issue enforceable directions beyond the specific dispute before the Court.

CBI arrests NAAC peer-review team, including its chairman, in accreditation bribery case

In February 2025, the CBI arrested members of a National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) peer-review team, including its chairman, for allegedly taking bribes to award a top "A++" grade to an institution.

Tamil Nadu received only about 3.6 tmc ft of water between June 1 and end-July against the roughly 40 tmc ft prescribed by the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal as amended by the Supreme Court, barely 10% of the entitlement; Karnataka's KRS Dam, meanwhile, held about 20 tmc ft of its 49.45 tmc ft capacity.

The Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department has identified 254 dilapidated or neglected temples across the state for restoration, several of them over 1,000 years old, at an estimated cost of about Rs 220 crore.
Alongside the temples, the department found 87 temple cars (ther) in poor condition and identified 285 temple tanks needing desilting or restoration.
At Kattamkulam in Kancheepuram district, the Agastheeswarar Temple is being restored at a cost of about Rs 2 crore.
Near Tiruvaiyaru, the Kashi Maharishi Temple at Keezhapoonthuruthi is being restored at a cost of Rs 50 lakh.

Kanniyakumari Coastal Rejuvenation Movement launched at Nagercoil

A new coastal-cleanup movement, the Kanniyakumari Coastal Rejuvenation Movement, was launched at Nagercoil, aiming to keep the roughly 175-km Kanniyakumari coastline clean over one year through weekly cleanup drives.
The movement targets removal of about 10 lakh tonnes of coastal waste over the year.
It follows earlier cleanup drives carried out along the Thoothukudi and Tiruchendur coasts.
