Mekedatu Reservoir: T.N. Assembly Resolution

NEET-UG 2026 Re-examination Held

  • Over 22 lakh aspirants sat the NEET (UG) 2026 re-examination on June 21 across 5,440 centres in 551 cities in India and 14 centres abroad, after the National Testing Agency (NTA) cancelled the May 3 test over paper-leak allegations.
  • To prevent malpractice, 1,38,560 CCTV cameras and 51,311 jammers were deployed, with a nationwide mock drill, paramilitary forces and the Indian Air Force assisting the exercise.
  • In Tamil Nadu, 1,42,489 candidates wrote the test at 307 centres, including 22,128 candidates at 43 centres in Chennai.

Centre Bans 16 Fixed Dose Combination Drugs

  • The Union Health Ministry banned 16 fixed dose combination (FDC) medicines in the public interest, holding that the drug cocktails lacked therapeutic justification and could pose risks to patients.
  • A fixed dose combination is a medicine containing two or more active drugs combined in a fixed ratio in a single dosage form; the banned list includes dermatological, analgesic, antispasmodic and antibiotic-based formulations deemed irrational or unsafe.

Ladakh Groups Seek Statehood and Constitutional Safeguards

  • The Ladakh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) called for a complete shutdown in Ladakh on June 23, accusing the Centre of backtracking on assurances given at the May 22 talks.
  • The groups want Statehood with an elected legislature having executive, legislative and financial powers, and special safeguards modelled on Articles 371A, F and G, to be granted through a proposed Article 371K for Ladakh.

Iran 'Closes' Strait of Hormuz Again

  • Iran's military said it had again closed the Strait of Hormuz to vessel traffic, citing 'violations' of the first clause of the June 15 memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United States, as Israeli air strikes on Lebanon continued.
  • The MoU calls for a ceasefire on all fronts 'including Lebanon'; the U.S. lifted its naval blockade of Iranian ports while Iran eased restrictions on the strait. Pakistan, which mediated the ceasefire, said 'technical talks' were to resume in Geneva.
  • Three Indian-flagged crude oil tankers, the Desh Vaibhav, Desh Vibhor and Sanmar Herald, carrying 94 Indian crew, transited the strait safely and are due to reach India between June 24 and July 1.

What the U.S.-Iran Agreement Says

  • Iran pledged never to make a nuclear weapon and both sides agreed to 'downblend' (dilute) its enriched material under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), with contentious issues like Iran's 60% enriched uranium left to a second phase.

India Overhauls Its Statistical Databases

HR&CE Cancels Rs.246 Crore Temple-Fund Projects

  • The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department cancelled administrative sanction for 29 wedding halls and 17 commercial complexes worth Rs.246 crore to be built using surplus temple funds, following orders of the Madras High Court (Madurai Bench).
  • A senior official said the funds could instead be used for devotee amenities like queue management, prasadam, toilets, drinking water and rest houses; a former official noted temple funds can be used only for charitable and spiritual purposes.

School Education Dept Wins SKOCH Award 2026

  • Tamil Nadu's School Education Department won the SKOCH Award 2026 for three initiatives, VETRI Palligal, TN SPARK and Tamil Nadu Model Schools, which recognise high-impact governance innovations.
  • VETRI Palligal, a talent-discovery and competitive-exam support programme, reached 59,270 students across 339 hub schools; TN SPARK equipped 3.53 lakh students with AI, robotics and coding skills; the Model Schools serve 11,885 residential students across all 38 districts.

Tamil Nadu's Tuberculosis Indicators

  • Tamil Nadu's tuberculosis incidence and mortality stood at 171 and 22 per 1,00,000 population (national figures 187 and 21), Health Minister K.G. Arunraj said after a review chaired by Union Minister J.P. Nadda.
  • He appealed to people with symptoms such as persistent cough, fever, weight loss and loss of appetite to visit the nearest Primary Health Centre for screening.

Reshuffle of 10 IAS Officers in T.N.

  • The Tamil Nadu government transferred 10 IAS officers, including the District Collectors of Madurai and Sivaganga, in an administrative reshuffle.

IUML Ends Six-Decade Alliance with DMK
