Speaker's ruling on warrant of precedence for MLAs

Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar directed the Chief Secretary to instruct Collectors, local bodies and Municipal Commissioners to follow the warrant of precedence and ensure the privileges and protocol due to MLAs are respected.
He ruled on a complaint by Thiru. Vi. Ka. Nagar MLA M.R. Pallavi (TVK) and warned that privilege proceedings would be initiated against members who violate the decorum of the House.

India-Israel deepen defence cooperation

Major-General Amir Baram (retd), Director-General of Israel's Ministry of Defence, called on Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to discuss expanding defence ties under the India-Israel Special Strategic Partnership.
Talks focused on collaboration in defence manufacturing, military technology, equipment, and joint research and development projects.

U.S. notifies arms sales for Apache helicopters and M777 howitzers

The U.S. notified the sale of sustainment support services for India's Apache helicopters and M777A2 Ultra-Light Howitzers at an estimated cost of $482.2 million, through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme.
A separate $230 million sustainment package for the M777A2 howitzers and an AH-64E Apache support package were also cleared.

UAE in talks to buy BrahMos and Akashteer

India is in talks with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to export its flagship defence systems, including the supersonic cruise missile BrahMos and the fully automated air-defence system Akashteer.
BrahMos is jointly developed by India and Russia, while Akashteer is developed by Bharat Electronics Ltd. and the Indian Army.

Airport facial recognition cameras to link with data fusion centre

Facial recognition cameras at major airports will be linked to a data fusion centre proposed in Delhi, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) Director-General Praveer Ranjan said.
Feeds from about 1.5 lakh surveillance cameras at vital installations will also be linked, and the system is to be integrated with the National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID).

Solicitor-General Tushar Mehta reappointed for three years

The Centre reappointed Tushar Mehta as Solicitor-General of India for a further term of three years from July 1; five Additional Solicitors-General were also reappointed for three years.

U.S.-Iran talks in Switzerland lay 'good foundation' for deal

U.S. Vice-President J.D. Vance said a "very good foundation" was laid for a final deal with Iran after a marathon session of direct talks at Burgenstock, Switzerland.
A 60-day period was set to secure a long-term settlement, with technical talks to continue; Iran agreed to invite back International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors. Mediators Pakistan and Qatar reached a roadmap.
The U.S. Treasury issued a general licence authorising production, delivery and sale of Iranian-origin crude oil and petroleum products through August 21, and a de-confliction cell was set up to keep the Strait of Hormuz open.

NSA Doval hosts BRICS NSAs meeting in New Delhi

National Security Adviser Ajit Doval hosted the June 22-23 meeting of National Security Advisers (NSAs) of the BRICS grouping in New Delhi.
He met Iran's Deputy Secretary for Defence Affairs Ghadir Nezamipour and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi; the meeting focused on non-traditional security challenges and counter-terrorism.

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer resigns

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation less than two years after leading Labour to a landslide win in July 2024, acknowledging the party no longer saw him as its best candidate for the next election.
Former Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who recently won a by-election, emerged as the frontrunner; nominations for a new leader open on July 9, amid the rise of the Reform U.K. party.

U.S.-backed lawyer wins Colombian Presidential election

Abelardo de la Espriella, a U.S.-backed lawyer, won Colombia's presidential run-off with 49.66% against leftist Senator Ivan Cepeda's 48.70%, swinging the country to the right.

China releases white paper on global governance

China released a white paper on global governance presenting itself as a defender of the international system, warning against a return to "the law of the jungle".
Its share of the UN regular budget rose from under 1% in 2000 to over 20% in 2025; it backs the WTO Appellate Body and built the AIIB, the New Development Bank and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.
Its four Global Initiatives on Development, Security, Civilization and Governance reflect "norm entrepreneurship" that preserves institutions while rewriting their normative substance.

China sanctions 10 U.S. military firms

China announced sanctions on 10 American military-related companies in response to a U.S. move barring some Chinese tech firms from defence contracts; Chinese companies are blocked from exporting "dual-use" items to them.

Blast at Qatar gas plant kills 12 Indians

A blast at the Barzan gas facility in the Ras Laffan industrial zone in Qatar killed 13 people, including 12 Indians, and injured 66 others.
Qatari authorities said it was "an accident and not sabotage or hostile in nature"; the explosion occurred during start-up of operations. The Indian Embassy in Doha issued helpline numbers.

Ebola cases in Congo top 1,000

Confirmed cases in the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo reached 1,003, including 254 deaths; the outbreak in Ituri province was declared on May 15 and 100 people have recovered.

Rakhigarhi skeletons transferred for scientific study

Human skeletal remains from the Harappan site of Rakhigarhi in Haryana were transferred by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to the Anthropological Survey of India (AnSI) in Kolkata for detailed scientific investigation.
Rakhigarhi, spread across about 550 hectares, is the largest known settlement of the Indus-Saraswati Civilisation; from Mound 7, 56 skeletons were recovered, including a woman roughly 4,600 years old.
Earlier DNA analysis showed the Rakhigarhi woman did not possess the steppe pastoral gene, fuelling the debate on Aryan migration to India; the study will use ancient DNA (aDNA), isotope and osteological methods.

Record turnout of Kashmiri Pandits at Kheer Bhawani temple

A record number of displaced Kashmiri Pandits gathered at the Kheer Bhawani temple in Ganderbal, central Kashmir, on the occasion of Jyeshtha Ashtami, buoyed by the improved security situation.
Over 214 buses ferried the devotees; they were welcomed by local Muslims, marking the tradition of communal harmony after the Pahalgam attack in April 2025 cast a shadow on last year's mela.

Mekedatu: New tribunal won't affect T.N.'s interests, says Minister

Water Resources Minister N. Anand told the Tamil Nadu Assembly that the demand for a new tribunal on the Mekedatu project would not adversely affect the State's interests.
He said the tribunal route, under the Inter-State River Water Disputes Act, 1956, is the best approach to establish T.N.'s rights over surplus water; the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) had rejected Karnataka's Detailed Project Report (DPR).

Concerns over Great Nicobar transshipment port

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh wrote to Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal seeking clarity on the International Container Transshipment Port (ICTP) at Galathea Bay on Great Nicobar Island, citing ecological devastation.
He questioned the ownership structure, citing a PPPAC recommendation that at least 55% equity be held by an Indian-owned and controlled entity, and named Colombo, Singapore and Port Klang as competing ports.

Growth in India's eight core industries slowed to 0.5% in May 2026 (per the Index of Eight Core Industries), the second lowest in 21 months; five of the eight sectors contracted.
Coal contracted 9.3% (worst in 10 months), crude oil 4.6%, natural gas 4.9% and refinery products fell; only steel, cement and electricity grew, with electricity up 8.7%.

Net FDI jumps to $6.6 billion in April, highest in nearly 5 years

Net Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) rose to $6.6 billion in April 2026 (its highest since May 2021), driven by a 65% surge in gross inflows to $15.3 billion, per RBI data.
Over 75% of inflows came from Japan, Singapore and Mauritius; outward FDI by Indian companies also rose, with about 80% directed to the U.S. and the Cayman Islands.

Meta to invest $900 million in Cred; Kunal Shah to head WhatsApp

Cred founder Kunal Shah was named head of WhatsApp, and parent company Meta will invest $900 million (about Rs.8,550 crore) in Cred as part of the hire.

CBI arrests former CEOs of Reliance ADA group firms

The CBI arrested Devang Mody (ex-CEO, Reliance Commercial Finance) and Ravindra Sudhalkar (ex-CEO, Reliance Home Finance) in alleged bank fraud cases.
The accused allegedly diverted funds to Reliance ADA group companies, causing a combined wrongful loss of Rs.7,623 crore to lending banks (Rs.4,097 crore in the RCFL case to 13 public sector banks).

West Bengal's first BJP government tables Budget

The BJP government in West Bengal tabled a Rs.4.38-lakh-crore Budget, its first, with a push for industrial revival and jobs and a promise to "build Viksit Bangla as part of Viksit Bharat".
It set aside Rs.36,000 crore for the Annapurna Yojana (Rs.3,000 a month for eligible women), Rs.3,000 a month for unemployed youth under Bhorsa Karmasathi, and a 20% rise in dearness allowance.

Tiruvallur ammonia gas leak toll rises to eight

The toll in the ammonia gas leak at St. Peter & Paul Sea Food Exports in Periyapalayam, Tiruvallur district, rose to eight, all of them women migrant workers (seven from Odisha, one from Assam); about 80 people were affected.
The government will constitute a committee to inspect all 6,669 hazardous industries; three persons were remanded under Sections 105 and 125(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Child and Adolescent Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986.
Editorial note: Tamil Nadu has battled ammonia leaks since the 1980s; the Tamil Nadu Control of Industrial Major Accident Hazards Rules, 1994 already exist, and DISH (Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health) had earlier recommended ammonia sensors, water-curtain systems and alarms after the 2023 Ennore leak (about 67.638 tonnes).

Singappen Special Force gets dedicated Helpline 1091

Helpline 1091 was designated the dedicated helpline for the Singappen Special Force (SSF), which is dedicated to preventing crimes against women and children, and it has been integrated with the 112 Emergency Response System.
Additional dedicated call-attending desks were set up at the State Police Master Control Room, said DGP Mahesh Kumar Agarwal, to enable faster response and continuous monitoring of complaints.

Smart water meters for 1 lakh buildings in Chennai

Chennai Metrowater roped in concessionaire JWIL Infra Limited to install and operate smart water meters in nearly one lakh water-intensive buildings across all zones, under the Rs.273.60-crore project.
The meters use IoT technology to track consumption in real time; the network is to be completed by August 2028 and operated for 10 years under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), aligning with Water Meter Policy 2022.

State should retain power to appoint Vice-Chancellors: Minister

Law Minister R. Nirmalkumar said the State government should retain the power of appointing Vice-Chancellors to State-run universities instead of the Governor, and announced a world-class law college for women in Chennai.

Conservancy work hours relaxed due to heat wave

The Greater Chennai Corporation relaxed working hours for conservancy workers owing to heat wave conditions, supplying head caps and distributing buttermilk to protect them from direct sun exposure.

'Healthy Streets' raise business, safety and lower pollution

A study by ITDP India, "The Healthy Street Dividend", found that remodelling streets boosts business, safety and environmental outcomes; in Chennai, Pondy Bazaar generates Rs.66.6 lakh annually through organised parking.
Across 10 cities and over 3,000 respondents, 89% of women reported feeling safer, pedestrian activity increased, and particulate pollution was 22 to 23% lower.

Week-long anti-drug crackdown: 77 arrested

The Greater Chennai Police registered 38 cases and arrested 77 persons in a special anti-drug enforcement drive from June 14 to 20, seizing 22 kg of ganja, 831 grams of methamphetamine and 1,222 tablets.

Health Ministry bans 16 Fixed Dose Combination drugs

The Health Ministry banned 16 Fixed Dose Combination (FDC) drugs on evidence that they lack therapeutic justification and are "deemed irrational or unsafe"; an FDC contains two or more active ingredients in a fixed ratio in one dose.
The ban targets dermatological drugs, analgesics, antispasmodics and antibiotic-based formulations; irrational antibiotic FDCs worsen antimicrobial resistance (AMR). In March 2016 the government had banned over 330 FDCs.

India's challenge of digital sovereignty

Recent breaches in Indian CCTV networks (linked to the Chinese platform EseeCloud) and Microsoft's enforcement of EU sanctions on Nayara Energy raised concerns about India's dependence on foreign digital infrastructure.
