  • Scientists developed Raman-DIP, a technique that tests for drug resistance in tuberculosis bacteria in just 50 hours, instead of the four to eight weeks needed by traditional phenotypic tests.
  • It uses single-cell imaging to track how cells process heavy water, and was reported to be 100% accurate against four major drugs.

'Fake Patents' Poison India's Academic Rankings

  • A report in the International Journal of Educational Integrity warned that several firms sell UK design registrations to Indian academics, who misrepresent them as international patents to boost institutional rankings.
  • These design registrations, often granted in about 11 days without any novelty check, only cover how an object looks and not how it functions.

Southwest Monsoon: Tamil Nadu Records Surplus Rain

  • Scattered rainfall is likely to continue across Tamil Nadu till the end of June, with near-normal temperatures; the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) cited an upper air circulation over the west-central Bay of Bengal.
  • Since 1 June the State has received an overall rainfall of 67 mm, which is 44% more than its seasonal average, with the southwest monsoon in its normal phase.

Khukuri: The Iconic Knife of the Gorkha Soldier

  • The khukuri is the curved knife that has become the iconic symbol of the Gorkha soldier and of Nepal, standing for strength, courage and loyalty.
  • It rose to fame when Gorkhas under Prithvi Narayan Shah fought in the Nepal Unification Campaign after 1744, and when they fought the British fiercely in 1814.
  • Today the Indian Army fields seven active Gorkha Rifles regiments and the British Army has the Royal Gorkha Rifles; the Nepal Army uses the khukuri as a combat weapon, a field tool and in ceremonial drills.

Indian Passport is Not Conclusive Proof of Citizenship

  • The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) clarified that the Indian passport is a travel document, not a document of citizenship, and cannot by itself be conclusive proof of citizenship in a dispute.
  • Citizenship is governed by the Citizenship Act, 1955, while passports are issued under the Passports Act, 1967; courts examine a passport along with other evidence in disputes.
  • The Supreme Court has held that an Aadhaar card and presence on the electoral roll or a Voter ID also do not prove citizenship, a point reinforced in its May 27 ruling upholding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
  • Citizenship by birth depends on the date of birth: anyone born in India between 26 January 1950 and 1 July 1987 is a citizen by birth, while stricter parentage conditions apply for those born later.

Ram Janmabhoomi Trust Hit by Donation Embezzlement Case

  • The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust announced that its general secretary Champat Rai and member Anil Mishra had submitted their resignations amid a donation embezzlement case at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
  • Eight people have been arrested on charges of embezzlement, criminal conspiracy and breach of trust; a Special Investigation Team is probing the case and the Trust promised a fair investigation.

Maharashtra TET 2026 Postponed Over Paper Leak

  • The Maharashtra government postponed the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) 2026 over allegations of a paper leak, with about six lakh candidates due to appear.
  • Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered a probe after Bhiwandi police in Thane found people in possession of questions similar to those in the test paper.

US-Iran War Reaches a Fragile Pause

  • A preliminary agreement (MoU) between Washington and Tehran brought the US-Israel war on Iran to a fragile pause, though both sides traded fresh fire after the US accused Iran of attacking a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Under the MoU, the ceasefire applies on all fronts including Lebanon, Iran gets access to its frozen funds and a development plan worth about $300 billion, and the US blockade of Iranian ports would be lifted.
  • In return, Iran promised never to build a nuclear bomb and to ensure safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz (through which one-fifth of the world's seaborne oil passes) for 60 days without any charge.

New Rural Jobs Scheme to Replace MGNREGA

  • The Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Aajeevika Mission (Gramin), or VB-G RAM G, comes into effect on July 1 as the new rural employment programme, replacing the MGNREGA.
  • Under the new scheme States must bear 40% of the total expenditure, unlike MGNREGA where the Centre bore 100% of the wage bill; the scheme promises 125 days of work.

Manickam Tagore Appointed New TNCC President

  • B. Manickam Tagore, a three-time Lok Sabha MP from Virudhunagar and a Rahul Gandhi loyalist, was appointed president of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC), replacing K. Selvaperunthagai.
  • The change comes after the Congress left the DMK alliance and joined the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led State government; Tagore began in the NSUI in 1994 and later led the Indian Youth Congress.

MDMK Exits the DMK Alliance, Backs TVK Government

  • The MDMK, led by Vaiko, formally severed ties with the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, passing the decision unanimously at its 32nd General Council, which adopted 23 resolutions.
  • Vaiko announced the party would support the TVK government and abstain from contesting the upcoming byelections.

Tiruvallur Ammonia Gas Leak Claims 16 Lives
