Vettri Payanam is the expanded free bus travel scheme for women and transgender persons in Tamil Nadu. It was launched on 2 October 2026 (Gandhi Jayanti) by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay at the Koyambedu bus terminus in Chennai, where he handed free tickets to women passengers. Free travel, earlier limited to ordinary town and city buses, now also covers Express, LSS and Deluxe buses in cities and towns, Mofussil Ordinary buses and Ghat Ordinary buses beyond 40 km: 12,695 buses of the seven State Transport Corporations, for about 84.32 lakh women a day.

Free bus travel for women began on 8 May 2021, on orders signed on 7 May 2021, and was later known as Magalir Vidiyal Payanam. Under it, women could travel free only in ordinary city and town buses, and in hill (ghat) areas only up to 40 km. On 24 August 2026 the Chief Minister announced under Rule 110 that the scheme would be widened and run as Vettri Payanam from 2 October. The Government said the aim is that no woman anywhere in Tamil Nadu should lose an opportunity because of the bus fare: girl students can reach distant colleges, women and transgender persons can reach their workplaces, and people can travel for medical and other essential needs without paying.
According to the Government press release of 2 October 2026, 12,695 buses of the seven State Transport Corporations operate 1,68,500 trips (singles) a day under Vettri Payanam, and about 84.32 lakh women are expected to benefit every day. Some newspaper reports put the figure at 12,692 buses, which is 69% of the 18,413 scheduled buses, and 85% of all scheduled trips. Ticketing machines in the buses were integrated to record the free journeys, with trial runs on 27 September 2026. In the first week about 5.9 crore journeys were made by women, and about 88 lakh women travelled on a single day, 7 October 2026.
At the launch the scheme was kept out of Chengalpattu and Tiruppur districts, because the Model Code of Conduct was in force for the by-elections to the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly constituencies (polling on 6 October 2026). After the votes were counted on 9 October and the code was withdrawn, the scheme started in Chengalpattu district on 10 October, in all mofussil buses except long-distance ones, and in Tiruppur district on 12 October. In Tiruppur, 151 mofussil buses were added to the 254 town buses that were already free, so that 405 of the 548 buses in the district now carry women free (as reported by Dinamalar, 11 and 13 October 2026).
