The single most important fact about TNPSC Group 1 and Group 2 book lists: Tamil Nadu Samacheer Kalvi school textbooks from 6th to 12th standard are compulsory reading for every subject except Polity - a large share of General Studies questions in every TNPSC exam are drawn directly from this school syllabus, not from external reference books. Everything below is a supplement to that foundation, not a replacement for it.

Do not start with the reference books. Read the relevant Samacheer Kalvi chapters first for every subject, since that is where the bulk of actual TNPSC questions originate and it establishes the foundational structure the reference books build on. Use the reference books specifically for: (1) Polity and Governance, where school textbooks are explicitly thin and Laxmikant (or the Tamil equivalents) is close to essential rather than optional; (2) filling factual gaps you notice while attempting practice tests - if you consistently miss questions on a specific sub-topic, that is when you go deeper into the matching reference chapter, rather than reading the whole reference book cover to cover speculatively; (3) Aptitude and Reasoning, which school textbooks don't cover in a TNPSC-exam-relevant format at all, making R.S. Aggarwal's practice volume genuinely necessary from the start.
A common, costly mistake is collecting every book on this list and reading none of them thoroughly. A smaller set of sources, revised multiple times with active testing between revisions, consistently outperforms a large pile of books skimmed once each.

Yes, with one adjustment. The Samacheer Kalvi foundation and the reference books above apply equally to Group 1 Prelims, Group 2/2A Common Prelims and both groups' Main Examinations, since all three share the same broad General Studies syllabus base (Indian Polity, Economy, Geography, History, Science, Aptitude). The adjustment is depth, not source: Group 1's Main Examination (Papers II-IV, Degree standard, 750 marks) expects noticeably more descriptive depth on Polity, Ethics and Integrity, and current economic trends than Group 2's single Main Paper II - so Group 1 aspirants should plan a second, deeper pass through Laxmikant and Ramesh Singh specifically for Mains, after clearing Prelims, rather than trying to read at Mains-depth from day one.
None of the books above substitute for a running current-affairs habit - TNPSC's General Studies papers, across all three groups, consistently draw questions on recent government schemes, appointments, awards and policy changes that no static reference book can cover, simply because they're published before those events happen. Treat current affairs as a separate, daily practice alongside this book list rather than a one-time revision topic - our daily bilingual current affairs pages are organised by the same six Prelims units used above, so you can slot each day's reading directly into the unit you're currently revising from your books.
If you are only beginning your preparation now, resist the urge to buy every book on this list in your first week. Start with Samacheer Kalvi 6th-12th for one subject at a time, moving in the order of Prelims unit weightage - Economy/TN Development Administration, Polity, and TN History/Culture first, since these three units carry the bulk of the Prelims paper's questions. Add Laxmikant for Polity only once you've read the corresponding school chapters, so the reference book builds on a foundation you already recognise rather than introducing every concept cold. R.S. Aggarwal for Aptitude and Reasoning is the one exception worth starting on day one, since school textbooks don't cover this section's format at all, and steady daily practice compounds over months in a way a last-month push cannot replicate.
You do not need to buy every book new or all at once. Second-hand copies, library access, and PDFs shared by your own coaching batch (where the source chapter is clearly stated, as ours are) cover the same content at a fraction of the cost - spend your money on the one or two books you'll genuinely revise multiple times, not on completing the list for its own sake.
