The most common TNPSC preparation mistakes are not about intelligence or effort - they are about direction: studying from the wrong sources, giving equal time to unequal units, ignoring the Tamil papers, postponing mock tests, and preparing for the stage that does not decide your rank. Each of these is fixable the day you notice it, and every one of them appears in the story of almost every candidate who missed a cut-off narrowly.
Aspirants routinely study from whatever material arrives on their phone, unaware whether it maps to any syllabus line. The official documents (codes 497, 495 and 496 on tnpsc.gov.in) are the exam's contract with you - anything outside them cannot be asked, and everything inside them can. Fix: print your exam's syllabus, tick units as you cover them, and reject any material you cannot map to a unit.
Compressed guides feel efficient until the paper asks the one line the guide dropped. TNPSC sets a large share of questions straight from school book sentences, and guides are summaries of summaries. Fix: school books first, guides only for revision after the source is read.
In Group 1 Prelims, Economy with TN Development carries 50 questions and General Science carries 10 - yet many aspirants spend identical weeks on both. The same distortion appears in Group 2/2A (where the Language part is 100 of 200 questions) and Group 4 (where Tamil is 150 of 300 marks). Fix: write your weekly plan with the weightage table beside it; hours should roughly track question counts.
The Tamil Eligibility Test gates the entire Mains evaluation for Group 1 and Group 2/2A at 40 marks, and Group 4's Tamil part is half the exam's marks with its own 40 percent gate. Every cycle, well-read candidates lose everything at these gates. Fix: schedule the Tamil paper as a subject with weekly hours, from the first month, not the last.
"I will take mocks once the portion is over" is the most expensive sentence in TNPSC preparation - the portion is never over. Without timed 200-question practice, reading accuracy never converts to exam accuracy. Fix: a full-length mock every week in the final three months, with review time equal to writing time and every error logged.
Five polity PDFs, three history guides, two current-affairs apps - and none completed. Every new source restarts your memory curve from zero. Fix: one source per subject, revised at least three times; add a second source only when mock tests prove a specific gap.
In Group 1 and Group 2, Prelims marks are discarded after screening - the descriptive Mains decides everything. Candidates who never practised answer writing discover in the Mains hall that knowing and writing are different skills. Fix: from the day Prelims ends (or earlier), daily answer-writing practice with word and time limits.
Twelve months of events cannot enter memory in three weeks, and every syllabus unit ends with "Current affairs". Fix: thirty minutes daily, each item filed under its syllabus unit - our daily bilingual current affairs are structured exactly this way.
Candidates lose attempts to details printed plainly in the notification: application correction windows, certificate mismatches with One Time Registration data, upload deadlines before Mains, centre rules. There is no supplemental list for documentation failures. Fix: read your notification end to end once, and your OTR profile before every application - our OTR FAQ lists the usual traps.
Cut-offs are decided by a handful of marks, and a first serious attempt that falls short usually means the method needs adjusting, not the dream. The error log, the weightage table and the Tamil paper plan - revisited honestly - turn a near miss into next cycle's selection. Fix: diagnose the exact stage and units where marks were lost, and rebuild the plan around those, not around more hours everywhere.

Collecting PDFs feels productive; finishing one book is what scores. Reading for eight hours feels productive; a three-hour timed mock with honest review is what scores. Postponing the Tamil paper feels harmless; the gate at 40 marks is what fails people. The correction is not more effort - most TNPSC aspirants already work hard - it is redirecting the same effort toward the scoreboard. Once a week, ask one question: "Of everything I did this week, how much would have directly earned marks on the actual paper?" Prepare your next week to raise that percentage, and the ten mistakes above quietly disappear from your preparation without ever being fought one by one.
