Chennai adolescents: sharp rise in prediabetes and obesity

A study published in the journal Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome: Clinical Research and Reviews compared 954 Chennai schoolchildren aged 12 to 19, from government and private schools, surveyed in 2023 with 1,080 schoolchildren surveyed in 2006, using the same methodology.
The prevalence of impaired fasting glucose, a prediabetic state, among girls rose sharply from 3.1% in 2006 to 28.1% in 2023, while among boys it rose from 3.5% to 26.4%.
The 2023 cohort recorded higher BMI, waist circumference, systolic blood pressure and fasting blood glucose than the 2006 cohort, along with more reports of a family history of diabetes.
The study was led by Nanditha Ramachandran of Dr. A. Ramachandran's Diabetes Hospitals, Guindy, Chennai, whose team noted that type 2 diabetes is rising faster among adults below 40 than among older adults.

Common air pollutants and their health effects

Sulphur dioxide (SO2) harms the respiratory system, forms haze in the air, and stains monuments and statues over time.
Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) aggravates respiratory illness, causes haze and acid rain, and pollutes coastal waters.
Carbon monoxide (CO) reduces the oxygen supply to the heart and brain, and high levels can cause dizziness, unconsciousness and even death.
Fine and coarse particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) irritate the eyes, nose and throat, reduce lung function, cause irregular heartbeat, and can trigger asthma attacks and heart attacks.

Tamil Nadu records sharp rise in dog-bite cases

Tamil Nadu recorded 4.68 lakh dog-bite cases between January and July 2026, the first seven months of the year.
The highest numbers were reported from Chennai (28,166 cases), Tiruchirapalli (23,095) and Coimbatore (22,113), with deaths also reported.
In response, the State government is running anti-rabies vaccine stocking drives and Animal Birth Control (ABC) programmes to sterilise stray dogs.

July 2026 was Tamil Nadu's second-warmest July in three decades

Analysis by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) found that July 2026 was the second-warmest July in Tamil Nadu in the past three decades, with July 2015 being the warmest on record.
Madurai was the hottest weather station in the State, recording the highest daily maximum temperature of 42.5 degrees Celsius and the highest monthly-mean maximum since 1991; its monthly mean minimum was also the highest, at 27.1 degrees Celsius.
Other places recording high July temperatures included Tiruchi, Nagapattinam, Vellore and Chennai; night-time minimum temperatures also stayed elevated across coastal areas, with Chennai's Meenambakkam station recording a monthly mean minimum of 28.3 degrees Celsius, and across hill stations, attributed to moderate El Nino conditions and the urban heat island effect.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts wet weather over Tamil Nadu's coastal and interior parts till mid-August, with above-normal maximum and minimum temperatures expected for the State overall in August.

India's monsoon rainfall outlook for August 2026

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts below-normal rainfall for August 2026, expecting precipitation below 94% of the Long Period Average (LPA); the August-September period, the second half of the southwest monsoon, is also forecast below 94% of the LPA.
Moderate El Nino conditions over the equatorial Pacific Ocean are expected to strengthen through the rest of the monsoon season; a neutral Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is likely to persist before turning positive in September, which could aid monsoon rainfall.
July 2026 itself was near-normal nationally, with India receiving 101% of its usual July rainfall (July is the rainiest of the four monsoon months), despite an IMD forecast on June 30 of at least a 6% rainfall deficit for July.

Western Ghats Ecologically Sensitive Area notification remains unresolved

The Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel (WGEEP), constituted in 2010 and chaired by Madhav Gadgil, had recommended declaring 142 talukas across 44 districts of the Western Ghats as an Ecologically Sensitive Area (ESA), divided into three Ecologically Sensitive Zones, to be notified under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
Following opposition, a high-level working group headed by Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan (constituted in 2012) reduced the area under restriction to only 37% of the Western Ghats; the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change issued its first draft notification in 2014.
An expert panel headed by former Director General of Forests Sanjay Kumar was constituted in 2022; between 2015 and 2026, five draft notifications were issued without Centre-State consensus, and after the last notification expired in July 2026, the Ministry extended this expert panel's tenure by another year.
Gujarat and Goa have reportedly agreed to finalisation, while Maharashtra has sought a fresh review and discussions with Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu continue.

The Banchhada community: from "criminal tribe" to Scheduled Caste

The Banchhada community, of nomadic origin in the Malwa and Mewar regions (present-day Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan), was notified as a "criminal tribe" by the British government under the Criminal Tribes Act, 1871.
The Government of India denotified the community in 1952 and classified it as a Scheduled Caste.
The community today numbers an estimated 25,000 people across 78 villages in the Mandsaur, Neemuch and Ratlam districts of western Madhya Pradesh.

"Vande Mataram" marks 150 years since its composition

2026 marks 150 years since Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay composed "Vande Mataram" in 1876; it first appeared in his novel Anandamath.
To mark the anniversary, an inter-college essay competition was held in Tamil and English, with 21 students winning prizes across categories (roughly Rs. 50,000, Rs. 30,000 and Rs. 25,000 for the three placings).

Playback singer Jamuna Rani passes away at 88

Veteran playback singer Jamuna Rani died in Bengaluru on July 30, 2026, at the age of 88; she sang in Tamil, Telugu and Sinhalese films across several decades, making her playback debut at age 7 in the Telugu film Tyagayya.
Her well-known Tamil songs include Yaaradi Nee Mohini (from Uthama Puthiran, with Sivaji Ganesan), Kaalai Vayasu Kattana Manasu (Deivapiravi), Paattondru Ketten Paravasam Aanen (Pasamalar), Kungumapoove Konjum Purave (a duet with J.P. India won its first-ever Commonwealth Games judo gold medals: Asmita Dey (23, from Belonia, South Tripura) won gold in women's 48kg, beating Canada's Heidi Quach 2-1 in Golden Score; Harsh Singh won gold in men's 60kg, beating Australia's Joshua Katz 10-0. Yamini Mourya won silver in women's 57kg, losing to England's Acelya Toprak by ippon in Golden Score.
In weightlifting, Lovepreet Singh (29, from Amritsar) won silver in the men's +110kg super-heavyweight category with a total of 388kg, behind New Zealand's David Liti (389kg); Lovepreet had won bronze in the 109kg category at the 2022 Birmingham Games.
In athletics, Seema Kaliramna (27, a PhD scholar) won bronze in the women's discus throw with a distance of 58.65m, behind Jamaica's Samantha Hall (61.66m, gold) and Canada's Julia Tunks (60.67m, silver).

ICC unveils 12 venues for the 2027 ODI World Cup

The 2027 ODI Cricket World Cup will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia; the 12 host venues were unveiled at a ceremony in Johannesburg.

Lok Sabha passes Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026

The Lok Sabha passed the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026, by voice vote amid Opposition protests, moved by Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai.
The Bill makes delayed registration of births and deaths more stringent: registrations done more than two years after the event will now require an order from a Judicial Magistrate of the First Class.

Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025: JPC gets more time

A Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) examining the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025 was granted an extension of its deadline to submit its report, and papers on the extension were laid before the Lok Sabha.
The Bill proposes automatic removal from office of a Minister, Chief Minister or Prime Minister if arrested and held in custody for 30 continuous days on a serious criminal charge carrying a jail term of 5 years or more.

Public Examinations Amendment Bill debate amid Gen-Z protests

The Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 was debated in the Lok Sabha on July 28-29, 2026, amid Gen-Z protests over paper leaks. Union Minister Jitendra Singh said in his reply that no firing had taken place during the protests, though tear gas was used, a statement the Opposition disputed, with Congress's K.C. Venugopal giving a privilege-motion notice.
Prime Minister Modi announced measures in response to the protests, including the creation of fast-track courts and amendments to the Public Examinations Act, 2024.
During the debate, LJP(RV) MP Arun Bharti proposed additional safeguards: a re-test within a month of any paper leak, maintaining a fixed exam calendar, no loss of academic year for affected students, and an extra attempt for candidates facing their final attempt.

Private member's bill seeks constitutional status for National Commission for Youth

LJP(RV) MP Arun Bharti moved a private member's bill in the Lok Sabha proposing constitutional status for a National Commission for Youth, as a nodal agency to address youth unemployment through skill development, entrepreneurship, idea incubation, and financing for young innovators.
A previous, non-statutory National Commission for Youth existed from 2002 to 2004 and was wound up that year. Since then, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has handled youth programmes.

Supreme Court moots protocol for court livestream archives

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said the Supreme Court intends to lay down a protocol so online users can access audio-visual content of livestreamed judicial proceedings, of the Supreme Court and State High Courts, only through the courts' own official archives, to prevent misuse and commercial exploitation.
This would modify a July 24, 2026 interim order, passed in a petition by Harshita Grover, that had barred extraction, dissemination or monetisation of court-proceeding recordings on social media without permission of the Secretary General (Supreme Court) or Registrar General (State High Courts). Activists Anjali Bhardwaj and Amrita Johri sought this modification, invoking the open justice principle.

Supreme Court orders DNA testing for Indians killed in Russia-Ukraine war

A three-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant directed the Ministry of External Affairs to appoint a nodal officer to facilitate DNA testing of the remains of Indian nationals killed in the Russia-Ukraine war, and to give their families complete records for pursuing compensation claims from Russian authorities.
The petition alleged the victims were lured through illegal overseas recruitment with promises of high-paying jobs, had their passports seized, and were pushed into the war zone. The government told the Court that nearly 220 Indians had joined the Russian Armed Forces.

Amnesty International report on India's arms exports to Israel

Amnesty International's report, titled "Made in India: The Supply of Weapons and Ammunition to Israel," states that over 2,500 shipments of small arms, parts and ammunition were exported from India to Israel between October 7, 2023 and November 30, 2025, of which at least 788 were determined to have military purposes.
The report names Indian entities including PLR Systems (a joint venture between the Adani Group and Israel Weapon Industries), Indo-MIM, Kalyani Strategic Systems (Bharat Forge Group) and Ashoka Manufacturing, as well as the government-owned Munitions India, India Optel and Advanced Weapons and Equipment India.
The report follows an earlier finding by the United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry, led by Indian judge Justice S. Muralidhar, that Israel's actions in Gaza constituted genocide.

Madras High Court extends stay on Tamil Nadu Assembly bypolls

The Madras High Court, comprising Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and Justice G. Arul Murugan, extended till August 24 its interim order restraining the Election Commission of India from notifying bypolls to five Tamil Nadu Assembly constituencies: Tiruchi East, Perundurai, Ambasamudram, Viralimalai and Karur.
The order originated from a July 10 interim injunction on a writ petition filed by K. Venkatachalapathy of Tirunelveli.

SIR of electoral rolls: CEC visits Coimbatore

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar visited Coimbatore as part of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Tamil Nadu's electoral rolls.
He said 4.93 crore voters have been authenticated so far in the state under the exercise.

Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana: a new floating solar scheme

The Union Cabinet approved the Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana, a floating solar scheme with an outlay of Rs. 5,070 crore, providing central financial assistance of up to Rs. 1 crore per MW for floating solar projects on reservoirs and other water bodies.
The scheme targets 5,000 MW of floating solar capacity by 2030-31 and will be implemented by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI); India currently has about 0.7 GW of installed floating solar capacity against an estimated potential of 102 GW.
Projects under the scheme must include battery energy storage of at least 2 hours, totalling 10,000 MWh across the programme; the reference project is the Omkareshwar floating solar park on the Narmada river in Madhya Pradesh's Khandwa district, currently India's largest at 278 MW, with plans to scale it up to 600 MW.

"Samudra Manthan": a new National Offshore Exploration Scheme

The Union Cabinet approved the National Offshore Exploration Scheme, called "Samudra Manthan", with an outlay of Rs. 84,084 crore under the Union Petroleum Ministry, to be utilised until FY 2030-31.
Its four components are: Rs. 43,200 crore for drilling 60 deepwater exploration wells (with the government funding up to 50% of the eligible drilling cost or Rs. 675 crore per well); Rs. 28,534 crore for offshore data acquisition; Rs. 10,000 crore for common offshore infrastructure hubs; and Rs. 2,000 crore for oil and gas manufacturing and services zones.
The scheme aims to help develop reserves of more than 600 million metric tonnes of oil equivalent (MMTOE).

PM-KISAN scheme extended for five more years

The Union Cabinet approved continuing the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme for a further five years, from 2026-27 to 2030-31, with a total outlay of Rs. 3.15 lakh crore.
The scheme, launched in February 2019, gives eligible farmers Rs. 6,000 a year; over Rs. 4.47 lakh crore has been transferred in 23 instalments so far, with the 23rd instalment alone benefiting more than 9.49 crore farmers with over Rs. 18,984 crore released.
Women farmers have received more than Rs. 1.06 lakh crore under the scheme so far; nearly 1 in 4 beneficiaries is a woman farmer.

Oil marketing companies report losses amid Strait of Hormuz disruption

Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) posted a net loss of Rs. 2,661 crore for the June quarter, attributed to crude-price disruption linked to the Strait of Hormuz, even as overall revenue rose 26% year-on-year to about Rs. 2.76 lakh crore; refinery throughput was 19.165 MMT at 109.4% capacity utilisation.
IOCL Chairman Arvinder Singh Sahney said the company has crude oil supplies secured for all of August and most of September (45 to 50 days); peers Hindustan Petroleum and Bharat Petroleum posted net losses of about Rs. 12,265 crore and Rs. 3,962 crore respectively for the same quarter.
IOCL absorbed under-recoveries of Rs. 720 per LPG cylinder in June and Rs. 503 per cylinder in July to shield consumers, and tapped the Reserve Bank of India's credit facility swap window to raise $500 million.

Bengaluru receives first tariff-free Scottish salmon shipment under UK-India CETA

Bengaluru received India's first tariff-free shipment of Scottish salmon (produced by Bakkafrost Scotland) under the UK-India Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), which eliminated India's earlier 33% import tariff on Scottish salmon.
The shipment was received by Owen Richards, Deputy Head of Mission at the British Deputy High Commission, at Sashimi Foods Pvt. Ltd.; industry estimates put the additional export opportunity for Scotland's salmon sector at up to 130 million pounds over the next decade.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) clarified that an off-market sale of unlisted equity shares by an existing shareholder through private negotiation is not a "deemed public issue," provided the purchasers do not exceed the statutory limit of 200 persons in a financial year.
The Supreme Court upheld an NCLAT order setting aside a Rs. 301.6 crore penalty the Competition Commission of India (CCI) had imposed on Grasim Industries in March 2020 over alleged dominance in the viscose staple fibre market, directing the CCI to re-hear the case.
The National Stock Exchange (NSE) paid Rs. 714.74 crore to SEBI, completing a Rs. 1,491.21 crore settlement of long-pending co-location and dark-fibre cases.
Maruti Suzuki, India's largest passenger-vehicle maker, reported a Q1 net profit of Rs. 3,352 crore (down 11% from Rs. 3,758 crore), even as net sales rose 36% year-on-year to Rs. 49,959 crore and its domestic market share rose 2.3 percentage points to 41.2%.

Cauvery water dispute: Tamil Nadu weighs its options

The Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) upheld the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee's (CWRC) order directing Karnataka to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu at 3,500 cusecs a day for 15 days, roughly half of the 9.94 tmc ft Tamil Nadu had sought.
Karnataka's reservoir storage stood at Harangi 95% of capacity, Kabini 83%, Krishnarajasagar (KRS) 36% and Hemavathi 67%; Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said this year's release to Tamil Nadu (till July) has been the smallest in the last 100 years. Tamil Nadu's Mettur dam released 54,000 cusecs of water, with its level at about 120 ft.
Tamil Nadu's Minister for Energy Resources and Law, R. Nirmalkumar, said the State government is examining several options: approaching the Supreme Court, seeking constitution of a fresh tribunal, inter-State dialogue, or Union government intervention; no official decision has been made yet on a Chief-Minister-level visit to Bengaluru, which had been mooted for August 3 to discuss both the Cauvery release and Karnataka's Mekedatu Dam project.

Chief Minister allocates Rs. 340 crore for drinking-water augmentation

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay ordered a Rs. 340 crore allocation: Rs. 330 crore to the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department and the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department to improve water sources and tanker supply, and Rs. 10 crore to the Animal Husbandry Department for livestock fodder.
The allocation responds to a deficient southwest monsoon: rainfall from June 1 to July 31 was 19% to 59% below normal across 20 districts including Chennai, Madurai and Salem, and over 60% deficient in Chengalpattu and Ramanathapuram.
The Chief Minister directed District Collectors to hold weekly (every Monday) review meetings on drinking-water supply, and ordered desilting of borewells, digging of new borewells, renovation of infiltration wells, and replacement of damaged cables, transformers, pumps and pipelines.

TNPDCL to re-examine 3.70 lakh inflated electricity bills

The Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL), under Chairman and Managing Director Arun Roy, directed officials to re-inspect over 3.70 lakh electricity bills issued for July, rechecking them against May bills, with the recheck to be completed by August 7 and corrected bills to be issued.
Minister R. Nirmalkumar clarified that about 11.5 lakh service connections had received bills 2 to 3 times higher than usual last summer, and about 9.5 lakh consumers received unusually high bills this year, of which 3.7 lakh are now under assessment.

Madras High Court orders a comprehensive review of the DVAC

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court directed the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary to constitute, within four weeks, a high-level committee (headed by the Chief Secretary) to comprehensively review the functioning of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), covering its institutional governance, investigative and preventive-vigilance capacity, administrative reforms, technology use, and public interface.
The committee must submit a cumulative report to the State government within four months of its constitution, after which the government must examine its recommendations and decide within a further three months.

Special audit committee formed over the Palani Math land-fraud case

The Tamil Nadu Registration Department constituted a six-member special audit committee to examine all documents registered during the tenure of suspended Sub-Registrar Justin Manikandan, covering the period from February 5, 2024, to his suspension, with a report due within three days.
The case concerns the alleged illegal sale of 1.4 acres of land belonging to the Dhandapani Swamy Math in Palani, which is being investigated by the Crime Branch-CID (CB-CID).

Tamil Nadu orders public release of the Union-State Relations report

The Tamil Nadu government, by a Public Department order dated July 30, directed the High-Level Committee on Union-State Relations to place the English version of Part I of its report in the public domain (the Tamil version was already public), and to cancel the exclusive copyright on the English version; the report is hosted at hlcusr.tn.gov.in.
The Committee, constituted on April 15, 2025, is headed by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Kurian Joseph, with members including retired IAS officer K. Ashok Vardhan Shetty and M. Naganathan, a former Vice-Chairman of the Tamil Nadu State Planning Commission; Part I of its report was tabled in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on February 18, 2026.

Chennai's Third Master Plan: developers seek a higher floor-to-floor height limit

At The Hindu Real Estate and Urban Infrastructure Summit 2026, luxury-housing developers urged the Tamil Nadu government to raise the floor-to-floor height limit in Chennai's Third Master Plan, noting the city's current 10-foot floor-to-floor restriction reduces luxury ceiling heights to about 9 feet.

PLEXCONNECT 2026: Tamil Nadu's potential in plastics exports

PLEXCONNECT 2026, a plastics export conference in Chennai, was organised by the Plastics Export Promotion Council (PLEXCONCIL, under the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry) with the Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering and Technology (CIPET).
Union MSME Secretary Pradeep Yadav said Tamil Nadu has the potential to become India's leading exporter of value-added plastic products by focusing on engineering plastics.

Chief Minister honours 633 uniformed-services personnel

Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay presented the President's Police Medal, the Union Home Minister's Medal, and the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's Medal to 633 personnel from the Police, Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Fire and Rescue Services, Prisons and Correctional Services, Home Guards and Civil Defence, and Forensic Sciences departments, at Rajarathinam Stadium, Egmore.
The Chief Minister also commissioned 42 four-wheelers and 96 two-wheelers for the Tamil Nadu Coastal Security Group.

Cooum river flood-preparedness deadline set for September 30

Civic agencies set September 30, 2026 as the deadline to clear construction debris from the Cooum river ahead of the northeast monsoon, with the Greater Chennai Corporation coordinating with the Water Resources Department, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Highways Department.
The Water Resources Department has entrusted Anna University with a detailed scientific hydraulic-impact assessment of the piers of NHAI's Chennai Port-Maduravoyal Elevated Corridor, which runs along large stretches of the Cooum, to study its impact on flood conveyance, sediment transport and water levels.

Tamil Nadu's daily wind-power generation touched 4,990 MW, close to the state's installed wind capacity of about 13,000 MW.

Chennai Metro Phase 2: tunnelling begins on the Thiruvanmiyur-Pattinapakkam stretch

Tunnel-boring work commenced on Chennai Metro Phase 2's Corridor 4 (the Light House to Poonamallee Bypass line), on the stretch between Thiruvanmiyur and Pattinapakkam stations, covering about 2,274 metres of underground tunnel.
