Varsha Ashok Aglawe took charge as the 54th Director-General of the Geological Survey of India (GSI), becoming the first woman to lead the institution in its 176-year history.
A palaeontologist with more than 30 years of experience in GSI, she succeeds Asit Saha as Director-General.
As DG, she is expected to steer GSI's push on critical mineral exploration and mineral security, now key priorities for the organisation.

Lodha Theoretical Physics Institute launched with Jainendra K. Jain as founding director

India gets a new private-sector theoretical physics institute, the Lodha Theoretical Physics Institute (LTPI), with Jainendra K. Jain as founding director.
Jain is the first scientist of Indian origin to win the Wolf Prize in Physics, awarded in 2025 jointly with James Eisenstein and Mordehai Heiblum.
The prize recognised their work on the composite fermion explanation of the fractional quantum Hall effect.
LTPI is funded by Abhishek Lodha, Managing Director of the Lodha Group, who pledged about ₹20,000 crore to the Lodha Foundation in 2024.
LTPI and the Lodha Mathematical Sciences Institute, set up in 2025, will each receive about $100 million over 8-10 years.

NEET-PG 2026 gets new reforms: Aadhaar authentication, wider centre choice

NEET-PG 2026, scheduled for August 30, will be a computer-based test of 180 questions in 210 minutes, held at over 1,300 centres across 340 cities.
Reforms this year include an expanded choice of test-city locations, Aadhaar-based authentication, more time per question, and the option to list three preferred States for exam centres.
More than 2.73 lakh candidates have registered so far, with the exact exam date to be announced three weeks in advance.

IITs and IIMs begin voluntary drug testing for incoming students

Higher-education institutions including the IITs and IIMs have begun offering voluntary, confidential urine drug tests for incoming students, screening for amphetamines, cocaine, marijuana, benzodiazepines and PCP.
The initiative follows the Narcotics Control Bureau's "Vision Document on Narcotics Control 2026-29".
The plan aims to screen about 10 lakh students across 170 centrally funded institutions over three years.

Coal's share in India's power mix falls to 65.7% as renewables hit record 20%

Coal's share in India's power generation fell to 65.7% in July, down from 69% in June and the lowest in a year, according to Grid-India data.
Renewable power hit a record 20% of the generation mix, producing 36.25 billion kWh, up 30% year-on-year.
Combined solar and wind output crossed 100 GW for the first time.
On July 13, solar and wind together supplied a record 42.8% of India's electricity.

Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 gets President's assent

The Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 received the assent of President Droupadi Murmu, after passing the Lok Sabha on July 29 and the Rajya Sabha on July 30.
The amendment revises the 2024 Act, which was enacted after the NEET-UG 2024 leak at Patna and Hazaribagh, and follows the NEET-UG 2026 leak that affected about 22 lakh students and forced Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation.
Under the amended law, investigations must close within 60 days, and trials within three months of the chargesheet in special fast-track courts; High Court appeals will go through a two-judge Bench within three months.
Penalties have been raised sharply: general offences under Section 10(1) now attract 5 to 10 years' imprisonment and a fine up to ₹50 lakh (up from 3 to 5 years and ₹10 lakh), while organised crime under Section 11 carries a minimum jail term of 7 years (up from 5) and a fine up to ₹10 crore (up from ₹1 crore).
The 2024 Act had secured zero convictions in two years, while pendency in fast-track courts rose from 2.02 lakh cases in 2023 to 2.45 lakh in 2025.

CAPF (General Administration) Act, 2026 challenged in Supreme Court by over 3,000 officers

Over 3,000 serving CAPF Group A officers, including gallantry awardees and women officers, moved the Supreme Court against the CAPF (General Administration) Act, 2026.
The law was passed by Parliament on April 2, 2026, and notified on April 9.
It reserves 50% of Inspector General posts, over 67% of Additional Director General posts, and all Director General and Special Director General posts in CAPFs for IPS officers on deputation.
Petitioners say this negates the Supreme Court's May 23, 2025 ruling in Sanjay Prakash v. Union of India.
CAPFs comprise the CRPF, BSF, ITBP, SSB and CISF.

Karnataka High Court upholds Section 5(ii) of the Hindu Succession Act on former royal-family estates

Justice M.G.S. Kamal of the Karnataka High Court upheld Section 5(ii) of the Hindu Succession Act, 1956, which exempts certain former royal-family estates from partition, dismissing petitions by descendants of Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar, the last Mysore ruler, and the Ghorpades of Sandur.
The court held that abolition of privy purses (Articles 291 and 362 deleted, Article 363-A inserted via the 26th Constitutional Amendment) does not affect the provision's validity.

NCISM clarifies registered AYUSH practitioners cannot be called "quacks"

The National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM), a statutory body under the NCISM Act, 2020, clarified that registered Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Sowa-Rigpa practitioners cannot legally be called "quacks."
However, this does not make them equivalent to MBBS doctors, the circular said, citing Poonam Verma v. Ashwin Patel (1996) and Dr Mukhtiar Chand v. State of Punjab (1998).

The breakup: CGST Rs. 39,835 crore, SGST Rs. 47,881 crore, and IGST over Rs. 1.23 lakh crore.
For the April-July period, cumulative gross collections stood at Rs. 8.43 lakh crore (+10.1%) and net collections at Rs. 7.21 lakh crore (+9.2%).

Centre releases fifth instalment of tax devolution; Tamil Nadu gets Rs. 4,466 crore

The Centre released an additional Rs. 1,09,019 crore as the fifth instalment of tax devolution to States for 2026-27 on August 1; 41% of central taxes are devolved to States in 14 instalments a year.
Tamil Nadu received Rs. 4,466 crore in this instalment. Other States: Uttar Pradesh Rs. 10,845 crore, Bihar Rs. 8,010 crore, Madhya Pradesh Rs. 7,866 crore, Rajasthan Rs. 7,022 crore, West Bengal Rs. 6,460 crore, Odisha Rs. 4,819 crore, Andhra Pradesh Rs. 4,504 crore, Maharashtra Rs. 4,094 crore and Karnataka Rs. 2,597 crore.

LPG price cut: commercial cylinders down about Rs. 200 in Chennai and across metros

Commercial LPG cylinders were cut by about Rs. 200, a cumulative fall of about Rs. 380 over two tranches since July. New prices: Chennai Rs. 2,906, Delhi Rs. 2,738, Mumbai Rs. 2,691.50 and Kolkata Rs. 2,872.50.
The domestic (household) LPG cylinder price was also cut by Rs. 200, with effect from August 1.
Meanwhile, ATF (jet fuel) prices rose by Rs. 5 a litre to Rs. 115 a litre.

RBI's concessional FX swap facility mobilises $40.82 billion since June launch

Maruti Suzuki sold 2,41,421 units (+34% year-on-year); Hyundai (HMIL) sold 75,360 units (+25.4%), its highest ever.
Tata Motors sold 63,760 units (+59%) despite disruption from the Sanand floods, with EV wholesales crossing 15,000 a month for the first time; Mahindra sold 1,03,860 units (+26%).

CBI filed a Rs. 1,816.22 crore EPFO investment-fraud case against Reliance Capital Ltd (former chairman Anil Ambani); EPFO had invested Rs. 2,500 crore via Non-Convertible Debentures in 2013-14 that later defaulted.
Vodafone Idea received a DoT notice for Rs. 26.83 crore in liquidated damages over an alleged rollout-obligation default in the 2022 spectrum auctions; NSE reported a net profit of Rs. 5,252 crore for Q1 FY27 (April-June).

PM Modi inaugurates Bhogapuram International Airport in Andhra Pradesh

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new Bhogapuram International Airport in Andhra Pradesh, built on about 2,200 acres at a cost of about Rs. 5,700 crore, with an initial capacity of 60 lakh passengers a year and planned expansion to 4 crore.
India's operational airports have risen from 74 to 166 since 2014.

AAI pushes Tamil Nadu government to finalise land for a new Rameswaram airport

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) pushed the Tamil Nadu government to finalise land for a new airport in Ramanathapuram district under the RCS-UDAN scheme.
Sites shortlisted include Devipattanam, Palankulam, Sattankovasalai, Pirappanvalasai and Tirupullani, with Keelakarai recommended; an alternative site was also examined at the INS Parundu naval air station near Uchipuli.

Chennai monsoon preparedness: state orders Rs. 340 crore for drinking-water sources
